Really makes me think about how complicated life seems to be and how it doesn’t need to be that way. It’s not often that we see people who are comfortable with silence at all, and this man is truly living the dream for someone who can enjoy their own company and not have to fill the empty spaces with noisy chaos.

Milledgeville/Central State Hospital was once the largest mental hospital in the world with over 10,000 patients.
I’m in my early 50’s and know people a little older than me who were patients there at one time. Know at least one person who had electric shock “treatment” there.
Those of us in Georgia of a certain age understand when someone said “send you to Milledgeville” what that meant.
Many families sent relatives there and completely abandoned them.

I live in Milledgeville and my mom used to be a head nurse at the asylum/mental institution you were visiting! Some of those buildings still facilitate other services. My dad is on the board to restore on the buildings for different uses. She cared so much about her patients because my brother is special needs. I wish I found your channel earlier because she would've loved to talk to you about the hospital. ❤❤

That would be awesome if they could restore some of those buildings. We use to have a lake house on lake Sinclair and would go to into Milledgeville to eat and shop. We would drive out and see the asylum sometimes. It's definitely creepy and ominous looking these days.

I went to GA College back in the late 80's early 90's and did volunteer work at a building that held 4 different age groups. Emmit Dimerson was in charge of both blg's. I worked with children from ages 5-16 for class credit. I'll never forget those 4 months of my life. It made me rethink how blessed I am to be able to do the things we all take for granted like feed ourselves, drive a car, or brush our teeth. I asked Emmit if their parents come visit them and he sadly said that most of them drop them off and never come back.

When finally a new young Doctor came in and said "this man is FINE,, He has Epilepsy, He's NOT Insane" release him NOW! And they did. Thank GOD for that young Doctor.. I went w/ my Dad which was his younger brother to bring him back home. That place was brutal and uncontrolled ! The people that worked at that Mental Hospital will burn in HELL for the pure torture they put the patients thru..

We used to rehearse there occasionally going over occasionally and sing for some of the patients. My attitude about mental illness began to change from that point. I grew up on those my grounds from birth till marriage. My Father was the Psychiatrist over the long term care division. Those houses, there are MANY more, are the staff houses. Some were converted to assisted living for the patients. Most all have been sold to one man that is "supposedly" rehabing them to rent out. My brother tried to buy the house he and I grew up in and never even had a returned call. All the trees my Daddy planted, flattened. It is so sad and we need mental health BADLY and there is the campus- just being left to ruin- at least rehab it for homeless Veterans. There is still a Georgia War Vet. Unit I think.

Yes, “send you to Milledgeville” was used as an insult. Having a learning disability, I was picked on and told that in my younger years. I had a cousin who lived in Milledgeville not at the state hospital but in the town on the north side. I think that Hospital could be used today because people with problems could get help there. Another town you could check out is Warm Springs Georgia. President Rosevelt started going to Warm Springs has a treatment for polio. Now there is a school there for people with disabilities. Also, they have a hospital for people with different disabilities like in a wheelchair. I went there in the early 90's and I loved being there.

I knew right off where that is and yes, it is an old Mental Health Hospital BUT it's also one of the places that the state used for training Correctional Officers.
I was actually trained there myself for 6 weeks back in 1999-2000.
We actually slept in that first building there on the first floor where you go in and to the right. Our other training was held in the other room and some upstairs and we had to march to the cafeteria which was quite a bit away.
    Oh and a quick note:
The bathrooms and shower areas where pretty bad even then. I remember seeing the tubs which we joked about using but I don't think anyone was brave enough, even back then.

We actually tried filming a video here last year and had security come out and tell us we couldn't even approach the buildings and gave us a trespass warning. They told us we were confined to staying on the sidewalks and couldn't approach the buildings. Bummer for us, but I'm glad that you got to visit and document the buildings and asylum better than we could. Not sure what we were doing that seemed suspicious to them, but given this location's reputation, lots of urban explorers have entered the premises without permission so I get the need for the security.
Great camera work and love tuning in to your travels with Millie. It's awesome to see you hanging out in and around Georgia. There are lots of places to explore here. A recommendation of mine is to visit Rome, GA and take a look at our cemetery, Myrtle Hill Cemetery. The cemetery dates back to 1857 and is the final resting place for over 20,000 of Rome’s most notable residents including 368 Civil War graves, four US Congressmen, a Congressman of the Confederate States of America, a US Senator and Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson.

While the USA does have very poor mental healthcare as a whole, these institutions are just so dangerous, potentially. So much potential for abuse, hidden away, as evidenced by the stores that have come out of these places throughout the last 150+ years. There is definitely some strangeness to these institutions in the 1800s. The amount of people that were in them compared to the population size. Were that many people really mentally ill? Were many simply generally ill people who just couldn't be bothered to be cared for by their families? Were they political dissidents who were a threat to the status quo?

This is my first video of yours, great work all around bro. One idea I had at the end seeing you warming up that meal using your oven is that you should consider a stove top pressure cooker and use the "pot in pot" method to heat using steam. It is extremely fuel efficient and it's great for cooking in general. I've used mine when camping and just set it some coals from the fire and not even used gas.
Anyways, thanks for the video can't wait to check the others out!

Just discovered your YT channel. Two years ago, before he died, my partner took me to Milledgeville. He owned 130 acres not far from there. We toured the grounds as you did and it was eerie and sad, but also it held a very special meaning for me. When I was about 9 years old, we got a phone call from my Grandmother. My Step Grandad had been committed to the insane asylum for several years and we suddenly got this call that he had died. No real cause of death was ever given. I had wondered about milledgeville and his death, for years. After the trip there with Stephen, I had more questions than answers, but at least now the far away place where they sent him, is no longer a memory without a picture. It was a very haunting but beautiful place when I went there. And watching your video reminded me of one of the last days that Stephen and I spent together. Keep doing these videos, because you don't know whose lives you touch with these trips:-)

Very interesting... I was a student nurse in the 1960s. Part of our psychiatry rotation was to study patients at Central State Hospital. Several nursing schools in GA sent their students there for a quarter. During the week, we actually stayed in the building with patients on floors above and below us. Other weekends we wenthome on Friday and came back on Sundayevening.. The houses were doctors and other staffs homes. We actually helped with EST (Electric Shock Treatments) The stories we could tell!!!

That would have been interesting. I did my psych rotation at a small facility near Phoenix that seemed to be more catered (not the right word) to treating depression and behavioral disorders. Although before our first day there I earned the respect of our instructor who overheard me telling the other student; there’s no reason to be afraid, these people are just like us but are having problems in their life.
I was also a Nurse Extern at the county hospital and had to sit with residents from Arizona State Hospital when they needed medical care. I particularly remember 2 gentleman with the same name with schizophrenia diagnosis. They were different as night and day. Would also have to observe (sit with) patients who’d harmed themselves. I learned to be very empathetic

I've lived in GA all my life, and my great-grandfather got shock treatments in the 1950s at Milledgeville. My husband and I visited the abandoned grounds about 6 years ago. There's a place where they have rows of small grave markers for some of the hundreds of people who died there. I'm an amateur photographer, and as I was taking photos of the grave markers, I swear I heard laughter in the air. Creepy vibes and most likely haunted place. One question - when we went, there were patrols on the grounds to make sure no one was entering the buildings, as they are unsafe. Were the patrols still there when you went?

I was a student nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta in the middle 60's and we did our psych rotation there. We spent 2 months there. It was very much a locked down facility. We as students were escorted to our wards and our classrooms every day. All wards were locked and we had a guard with us at all times. I am now 79 so I don't have a lot of memories there but I do remember how sad a place it was. You really took meback in time today. I subscribed to your videos.

Loved watching your interaction with Millie...She's super cute and full of energy...The beach visit , you used to go to, as a child, was beautiful to see...A few years back, I visited the family Bach and had experienced quite a bit of mixed feelings, when I visited it, as an adult...I wondered if you had similar emotions...Your research on the abandoned buildings was quite surprising because with everything that went on in that place, it did take quite a while, before it was understandably closed down...Things back in the day was just proof, how mental health, was dealt with and was sooooo wrong, on soooo many levels...I see your water system is back, up and running...Anyway young Trent...As usual, look forward to your next adventure, but until then...Take care and safe travels.
