I have enjoyed watching your instructional video. I learned from it: the proper pencils and tools to use, as well as the reason for using them, in order to achieve the particular results. It all made good sense. Thank you!
I'd just like to comment on how beautiful your art is. Pencil still remains my absolute favourite medium and watercolour is my very close second. Your art combining both mediums inspires me to continue in my own personal art. Thank you for your wonderful videos!!
Cecelia here. For the past two years, I have been studying Sumi-e painting. I have found that pencil sketching before actually painting helps me to formulate some idea of what I am about. I realize that prior to painting Sumi-e, one must meditate whilst grinding the ink on the ink-stone. Nonetheless, I require an image before I begin. My preliminary sketches were so uninspiring that the Sumi-e painting based on them didn't have any sense of life and movement. Then I stumbled on your videos. Thank God, for my frustration level was mounting and my hard work wasn't paying off. Contrary to the old saw "Practice makes perfect", it is only perfect or near perfect (enlightened and educated) practice which can have any hope of being near perfect. In my quest for more information, I read book after book on Sumi-e painting, Ikebana, and tea ceremonies to little avail. But, one little item struck my fancy. A master teacher of Ikebana said that there must be the "wind" between each flower or branch. The arrangement of flowers should breathe: have life. So, too, the Sumi-e mountains are separate from the land. It seems, at first sight as if things are disconnected but on closer inspection, the work lives and breathes in the white ethereal spaces (the paper is part of the art.) I see all of this in your work. The water moves, the trees live, the grass grows and even the sky has a life of its own. Thank you, Cecelia
Wow Cecelia, that's a great comment, and very interesting too! I always try to be mindful of the space or air between objects in my drawing, its really what gives the illusion of depth and distance. And as for practice makes perfect...yes to a certain degree, but perfect practice makes perfect resutls. Thanks again Cecelia for a wonderful comment:)
Cecelia that is amazing what a wonderful saying and I agree with you totally, you have expressed so well what I see in smoothies art and haven't been able to find the words for ❤️ thank you so much that will be an inspiration to me too x
Cecelia I just wanted to tell you how often I bring to my mind the words that you have spoken here, for so many months they have been my inspiration along with smoothies example of the air between things. I have developed both things into a philosophy to inspire my art work and frequently bring them to mind throughout a drawing. I think for me they symbolise my idea of a perfection to strive for and let myself meditate on this philosophy frequently throughout a drawing, I believe as a result my Drawing has improved because it has that spiritual dimension to it. Thankyou for inspiring me
Just discovered this demo, very helpful thank you Smoothie. I usually use water colours but using the watercolour paper really looks an excellent idea for pencils, more demos please
Cheers smoothie! This is exactly what I need for my current drawing from Hay Bluff as I will be putting trees in and I know you're the man for the tutorials! Many thanks👍
+Maria Kellner Thanks Maria, also thanks for the tip about using toothpaste to clean stained paint palettes...it works great! , everyone please take a look at Maria's watercolour website, her paintings are incredible, she has invented a new product called colour previewers, check them out at www.marylkaart.com
Hi there, great vids which have been very useful. Would you consider working on an image with more rock, cliff, mountain content. Something such as the Peak District or the Lakes how to work with a lot of rocks and stones and crags as a tutorial?
I've made a preliminary drawing of a steam train for watercolor with trees in the background and grass in the foreground. The trees need to show more detail but are far enough away not to show every leaf.
First off, fantastic work, truly. This might seem like an odd question but in this video, do you draw by moving your wrist or your arm? Just curious. Again, great video.
smoothie77 I'm struggling with a sketch with trees had to actually redo the whole thing that was tough to start all over again... I love how you teaching me I subscribed..
Wonderful! Something I will be trying.
Beautiful -- Magic watching you. Sue from Sydney
Wow! This is so helpful to me. Thank you so very much for sharing!

Thank you, I'm pleased it was helpful to you, watercolour paper gives some nice textured effects with graphite, certainly worth trying?
I really enjoy your work. Thanks for sharing!
Do you have a video s that give tips on how to shade trees on mountians because trees on mountains are in thousands, so any tips
Very beautiful demo! Watercolor paper is a good idea! Thank you so much!
Thanks, watercolour paper works better than drawing paper for this technique.

So useful thank you
Great lesson ,especially explaining by using the pencil type will not mix with the paint pigment as much, tfs.
+smoothie77 Glad it worked out it does for me . thanks for the mention.
Doskonale tłumaczysz i choć nie znam perfekcyjnie języka Angielskiego starcza mi to co widzę w czasie realnym. Dziękuje
DO YOU KEEP YOUR KEEP PAPER VERTICAL OR FLAT ON TABLE
Are u drawing on a flat surface like a table or vertical surface like wall?
Thank you! 👍😘
I am doing this for my hw and I will show off in front of my friend (she loves to draw and gets jealous easily)
Lmao
bruh
Can you post a vedio drawing foliage of trees with a detailed view
What kind of paper are you using?
Do you have the whole video of this sketch? Would be good to follow the whole thing right up until before it's ready to be painted
What fab trees. I can see now where I’m going wrong
Thanks Wendy, I'm glad it was helpful to you.
very nice
Hi there, great vids which have been very useful. Would you consider working on an image with more rock, cliff, mountain content. Something such as the Peak District or the Lakes how to work with a lot of rocks and stones and crags as a tutorial?
I will add that to list, I get a lot of requests, it's a case of finding time to fit them all in but will do my best, thanks for the comment.
Whooo, very impressive! i ts an 4B pencil? :)
You said that you would explain how you draw grass soon I wonder if you have or plan to ?
Been working on the drawing and video the last two days, should be uploaded tomorrow .
I look forward to that, you have inspired by your work, thank you
thanks for helping
You're welcome.
aawsum wrk 😀
Thank you :)
What type of pencil is best used for this so that watercolor does not smudge it?
Any regular graphite will do.
Thank you! I love your work.
really nice tutorial..can you please tell how long did it take you to finish the drawing?
I cant remember exactly, it was a while ago, I'm guessing about 1-2 hours.
What would be your method of drawing trees for watercolor on 300 lb. hot pressed paper?
Same as it would be for drawing regular graphite drawings of trees on cartridge/drawing paper
But the paper won't give the texture look of rough paper.
I've made a preliminary drawing of a steam train for watercolor with trees in the background and
grass in the foreground. The trees need to show more detail but are far enough away not to show every leaf.
I don't mean to be difficult. My trees tend to be very flat regardless of the distance from the viewer.
yes that right, you need a textured paper for this method
First off, fantastic work, truly. This might seem like an odd question but in this video, do you draw by moving your wrist or your arm? Just curious. Again, great video.
Thanks, I use my wrist for the small strokes and my arm for the larger ones,
Nice
Thank you!
smoothie77 I'm struggling with a sketch with trees had to actually redo the whole thing that was tough to start all over again... I love how you teaching me I subscribed..

+wozzi71 Yes I will get around to it soon, thanks
+smoothie77 oooo yes! And if it's okay, could you show us those round hay bales that were in your other drawing...pls? ^ ^ tyvm : )
+watercolour squirrel Hi, I'm getting behind with requests, but I will do my best, if I do another landscape with hay bales I will make a demo of it.
