I was one of the "actor" policemen. You can see the back of my head briefly in the lower left of the frame @8:29. You bring back memories of that shoot, in the fall of 1974. Lumet was great, by treating all of the background actors with respect by actually telling us, atop a ladder with a bullhorn, what was happening in each scene involving us and what our motivation was!

To me, Dog day afternoon is absolutely unforgettable. At first it took me in an unprecedented rollercoaster of emotions all throughout. Then, as I got older, I was hypnotized by the mastery of screenwriting in display. Seeing where it all took place nearly 40 years ago is nothing short of magical for me.
Thank you for doing this. This whole bunch of videos about this movie was like a huge treat! Keep up doing what you're doing, so long as you enjoy it!

Me too, I love this film, the whole inside/outside set thing makes it look fantastic. I'm from the UK and my girlfriend lives in Brooklyn, so when I go over I like walking round to see these filming locations, she lives by Prospect Park and can see her building near the big red/white aerial from the helicopter shots!

You did a great job. I really enjoyed this. I lived in Manhattan from 1974 - 1994. I saw several scenes shot for major motion pictures; Report to The Commissioner, Eyes Of Laura Mars, Taking Of Pehlam 123, Sea Of Love, and many TV shows. My first was Midnight Cowboy on 74th & Broadway - when I was 13 years old.
Again - great job on this.

I'm a big fan of 'on location' scenes where movies were filmed. This is fantastic! You did a great job pointing out specific spots...and the Then & Now description. I personally look for fire hydrant, lamp poles, and building designs to point out spots. They rarely change throughout decades.

@Maggy Reb (for some reason there isn't a 'reply' button under your comment)
I feel the same way! I must have seen it a hundred times over the years, but it wasn’t until I got into filmmaking that I realized how perfect the writing was. Visiting the location was such a treat, especially because I had been watching it over and over again while I was researching the first video. So, when I finally did the location video, it was really mind blowing to be in the spot where it all took place. I’m so happy you enjoyed these videos and it is really wonderful to share in the appreciation of this great film. Thanks so much for the comment and thanks for watching!

Hey Tyler! I was really drawn into your channel after watching your videos on the making of 2001, and I really respect the quality and insight your videos offer and all the effort you've put into them. I love movies and I'm thinking of making them one day, but it seems unlikely because right now I'm taking more of an 'academic' pathway (besides I live in Singapore and the industry here is weak; oh, and Hi from Singapore!) and me going to film school seems a pretty unlikely idea. That's why I was absolutely blown away when I stumbled into your videos because I was learning so much from them, and to think that you admire Akria too! Please, keep doing what you're doing and all the best!

    • @CinemaTyler
      @CinemaTyler  9 років тому +3

Keith@tidbithoughts Thanks for the comment! I appreciate your kind words. I went to film school and it was… okay. Perhaps it would have been better if I had gone to one of the big film schools. Everything I go over in my videos are things I’ve learned outside of film school. The best things about film school is the connections you make to the fellow students who are willing to work on projects for free and the faculty who can provide resources and opportunities. Film school certainly isn’t necessary especially when there are so many great films to analyze and so many resources online and in DVD special features. I am a believer that a good movie can be made from any subject matter and genre. That said, I am a big fan of sci-fi and Akira is a masterpiece. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more!

Join me in visiting the filming locations for Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon. This was a really fascinating location to visit. A lot is different, but so much is the same. It is amazing to think that it was filmed almost exactly 40 years ago. #filminglocations #Lumet #Filmmaking #Brooklyn #DogDayAfternoon #OnLocation #TheMakingOf #analysis #directing #FilmSchool #Production

The building way in the back on the right 1:15 is the high school I went to (Bishop Ford CCHS). There are one or two pretty quick but clear shots of it in the movie. I've walked up and down that street passing right in front of the bank building while attending from 1982 - 86. Thanks for your great work Tyler and a fun revisit!

I went to the local high school there which is across the highway the prospect Expressway Bishop Ford High School I was in that crowd on the corner every day we went out there for lunch and when they did the part of Attica when Al Pacino was screaming Attica and everybody put their hands up in the air I was in that crowd screaming Attica we had to do that scene over at least five different times most of the kids in there had long hair rock and rollers it was an exciting time. That area at the time was Rundown most of those buildings were abandoned and in disrepair. My high school has since closed down it is no longer Bishop Ford high school and that area has regenerated into a very nice area that's the time of my life I would never forget everytime I see the movie I try to find myself in the crowd with the cameras pan to quickly it was a lot of fun

YT won’t let me cut and past but I do have memorabilia from DDA.
I believe it’s a sign from the movie that was used to make traffic or the local residents aware that filming would be taking place.
Its made of aluminum or tin. Never seen anything like this before. A Dear friend of mine gave it to me for my bday!
    Sign says
    “WARNER BROS INC”
    “DOG DAY AFTERNOON”
    “285 PROSPECT PARK W”

I think there was an accountant early in the movie. He came from across the street to ask the bank manager if everything was okay in the bank. I wish you would have pointed out where his accounting office was located. Next to the barbershop?

September is mostly a Summer month 'til the 21st. even tho I can see how it could get cool, I'm surprised it's cold. Lumet is seen wearing a heavy jacket and ironically, indoors in Sept. w/ out A/C gets pretty uncomfortable. but that's probably all phony sweat .

@@HashishUno The problem was that 1970s New York was a little too bad ass. As much as that era is romanticized in film, it was not a good time. The city was bankrupt, buildings were abandoned, and crime skyrocketed.

Many Thanks for these 'Shows' you have taken the trouble to Format, but most of all thanks for the 'Tastes' you have Formed as a Focus for stuff that do not really feature in mainstream Art/creative 'TV/Cable' channel Programming at all now. Group Think might trend these Type of things but it probably 'Political Use' to show system 'Inclusion' & will be Whitewashed when they get Overall Consent in 'PR' Normality/s.
All the Localities with 'Grit' in this Era are not 'Cartoon'/ 'Office/Lounge/Home' Clean Lifestyle Enough now.....it's like the Inside of a Personal Computer has to be why PC is being USED. A future of Robots from Humanity through 'Rebellion'?
