Gotye: *wins a grammy*
Also Gotye: *drops off the face of the earth*
not everybody wants to stay on the spotlight. somebody that i used to know was just an accidental hit.
I still listen the song
he lives down the street from me in Northcote, a suburb in Melbourne. He walks his dog past my house all the time, always smiling, down for a chat, a happy man, coming back with milk or a bottle of wine. I couldn't help myself and once asked "Do you still make music?" and he said "I do. I just haven't released any! Not commercial music anyway. I hated being somewhat famous...wasn't for me" or something to that effect. He said he still jams out with his buddies though!
@@september5671 he seems so chill
It's the indie artist effect. Kinda like Ben Gibbard/Chris Walla. Then again... they never won Grammy. There was a time you couldn't watch a show or movie that didnt feature one of their songs.
They looked more happy because Prince said he loved his song
I would be too haha. Kimbra especially though apparently he was one of her top influences in music
Prince was ridiculously honest. If Prince loved your music, you wore that shit with a badge of honor.
Yesssss
CUZ IT WOULD BE A CRAZY STATEMENT
Prince wh0?
God, what an honor, Prince saying he loves your song!
Also, Kimbra and Gotye are HIGHLY influenced by Prince.
@@chamham6734 Definitely can’t blame them for that
Way bigger than ROTY
He did a tribute of Prince's song when he passed.
Even better than the Grammy imo.
Prince declaring in public that he loves your song is more than any Grammy Awards!
🙄
You hit the nail on the head with that comment...I love it.
Absolutely 💯
Without doubt
Awesome song
Can we talk about her dress also? Its stunning, even 9 years later
Its such a slay. She couldve worn that in this year's grammys and everyone would eat it up
💘
Why would it be any less stunning in 2022 than in 2013?
@@SStupendous fashion changed
@@UA-camaccount50512 So? I find suits and dresses from the 1870s stunning
It says a lot that not only did Prince publicly say he loved the song, you can see pretty much all the other nominees (especially Kelly and Frank) are absolutely delighted that Gotye and Kimbra won. The Grammys don't always get it right, but they nailed it here.
Facts
"Wayne's World" moment. "We're not worthy". They may not have said it, but they could have been thinking it. Wouldn't anyone?
True. Kelly was excited for them. Frank was like “I KNEW IT!” Love it. The song is a masterpiece.
I would be happy too if i were them😅 even taylor swift couldnt get a chance anyway after the nost she made incredible songs too
Nah their def seething
Not only did Kimbra look stunning, she looked unbelievably humble. What a star!
Graceful.
probably that's why these two are never made another great hit. They didn't sell their soul..
Real RECORD OF THE YEAR. One of the few times Academy did it right
Couldn't agree more!
Agreed!
anyone wanna argue? I FUCKING DARE YOU!
@@yahiryellow1 thinking bout you better
@@yahiryellow1 frank is 100x better
the way that this song is still relevant up to this day, pretty iconic if you ask me.
And became famous again because of the "lore meme"
An ode to the modern relationships, when they go bad.
@@johnlourencecarlos9620 2024 still going and not a sign of being thrown to the back
Imagine a legend like Prince giving you the Grammy for Record of the Year. Can't get better than that 🤯
Well his comment was better than just getting the award from him. Priceless!
Yup. Gotye got so overwhelmed by everything he achieved in his life at once that he didn't have to work for anything anymore 😉
Yeah it can! Prince saying he loves your song to the entire world is 1000x better than a Grammy! Lol
Him saying that he loves your song is probably worth more than a Grammy.
He looked depressed
Kimbra was a breath of fresh air when she came on to the music scene wearing beautiful dresses and looking completely in control of herself. I went down the rabbit hole and listened to everything I could find by her. She is such a talented artist.
Sad thing she stayed in that mid popularity area. Her energy in live performances is pure gold, she s very versatile as well! Hard to say what kept her from becoming huge
@@Jaa_morantthat pedo hollywood lifestyle aint for everyone
I’m doing the Kimbra rabbit hole right now. Love her voice, talent.
@@Jaa_morantShe probably refused to sleep with the producers. No sex, No fame. That's how the business works
Is she a single mother?
I love the way he made a compliment to " Prince" & she " thanked Prince"
" Prince was truly a Icon"
O Gotye & a Kimbra ... deveriam terem sido gratos ao BRASILEIRO que os inspirou pra esta MÚSICA vir à existir , como é agora =
1 ótimo sucesso ( fenomenal ) mundial !!!
Look at all those nominees, this was one of the best times in music.
Yeah, like Taylor Swift.... not so sure about that, but indeed had some good moments.
Absolutely
frank 😭 insanity
@@SStupendousTaylor more than anyone, she deserved her place in that category. ✌🏻
No they're not !
Prince saying "I love this song" was more important than the Grammy itself :P
When Prince tells you that he loves your song, it's worth every award you could possibly get.
Love how he starts off his speech thanking Prince for inspiring him and being an amazing artist, before saying anything about his own song. Class act, he deserves the success of this huge song.
" Ah, I love this song". That was heartfelt and honest, and worth all the more because of it.
What a huge honor hearing Prince saying "I love this song"
I would’ve left the Grammy when Prince said he loved the song. Those words are exponentially more valuable.
*Of course* Prince loved this song. "Somebody That I Used To Know" has a VERY retro--1980's sound. It was unique in the 2012 music climate of "blah"/ "meh" music (with the exception of "Reflektor" by Arcade Fire and "Latch" by Disclosure).
You don’t remember 2012 very well from what I’m seeing in this comment. If that was meh music I wonder what NOW is 😬😭
Wow, look at you…I bet you’re probably one of those indie/old music elitists who don’t recognize pop music as an art medium.
@@catsinwonderland7473 ikr 😭
@@catsinwonderland7473 yeah, it's shit. fight me.
U happen to be forgetting albums like gkmc by kendrick, money store by death grips, lonerism by tame impala, the seer by swans, Channel orange by Frank ocean etc. I think its just that u don't have an open enough mind or just don't know enough music to recognise this
Lowkey teared up seeing the entire interraction with Prince. All real creatives especially in music should respect that man.
it almost looked like he got choked up a bit when they stopped to thank him like that. how many artists stop to thank the person who handed them the award? usually it's offstage i would imagine
I teared up too.
Prince is so humble. Great personality he was. 😔
In a Stadium with thousands of people, she's the first to stand up. And she's also the No.1 Artist there that night!
Yes, I've always noticed that. I couldn't believe it when I knew the problems she has gone through. I really don't understand Americans sometimes ( not complaining or anything It's just really surprising for me, I'm from Sri Lanka btw ) All Taylor has done is good and be kind to people and she's Talented as Hell, literally It took me months to understand folklore and evermore correctly! Can't believe she even a mainstream Artist. She's so different from the typical Artist type, at least for me. Hope she wins AOTY this year : )
Yes, not just that 1989 shaped the whole music industry that year we are still in that trend that Taylor started! She literally changed music forever and I think it's for the better
Yup....we love tay-tay
It’s not a standing competition…
@@user-ke5rt3ji8c it's not just for them she stands for almost every award sometimes it's only her. That's respect
Never has an artist deserved it more than Gotye. Such pain in the lyrics masterfully delivered by his vocals. Gosh we don't such artists anymore nowadays. Hope the best for the future.🤞
Great song, that happens maybe in a decade
Back here in NZ, saw Kimbra at the local gas station a few months after these Grammy awards, struck up a Convo with her and 20 minutes later we’re still talking, that interaction was super cool and I’ll always remember that really awesome moment with a unique artist who’s worked hard to get to where she is now.
The way Taylor was the first to stand up and clap for them so the people around her did it too
Ummmm everyone is standing up not just her.
i love how she was the first one to stand and clap. queen behaviour.
Uuhhm, as much as i love taylor, but why do we have to praise someone for just being the first to stand? Aren't we in the age of not praising anyone for just doing the bare minimum?
Thats called Hollywooding
@@azulablue6988 she was the first to stsnd after losing to him. Could've rolled her eyes, or go to the stage and say she is the best of all time🤣
No other singers who were nominated and lost stood up.
Wow, now they are somebody that we used to know
A well deserved win for Gotye! Hope he'll make a comeback soon. Fun + Janelle Monae or Kelly Clarakson was also okay to win this award too.
The beat is Latin inspired
Frank Ocean as well. It'd be a toss up between Fun, Frank, and Gotye + Kimbra for me. The strongest two being Frank & Gotye + Kimbra
Check out his band "The Basics"
Gotye is such a legend , his grammy speech was not about thanking God , his producers and fans but appreciating not well known music and musicians all over the world .
yeah... but for him to pay for the sample he stole from one of these artists (in this song) it took a lawsuit
He didn't 'steel' , Sampling is Ok , he would've even won the Lawsuit because of only a short part resembling the brazillian singer ( can't get the name ). And Gotye released a statement that he just promised to pay 50% royalty of the song because he didn't want lawyers and courts , he wanted to pursue music. He is a great man .
@@renanmateus9116 Sampling isn't stealing, it's appropriation, which is art. Also, Bonfa wouldn't have had an opinion because he was long dead. It was his estate the sued Gotye. People who had nothing to do with making the track in the first place.
@@Alan.livingston it wans't just a case of sampling, he only talked about it after someone notice the resemblance. He did NOT ask for permission to use the song. which is quite common for american industrie to do with Latino songs. if you're using someone's work, you have to pay for it or at least, say it , whitout you being asked so.
@@renanmateus9116 I think we might end up having to agree to disagree on this one. Artists having to clear samples end up as nothing but a mechanism for record companies to scunge yet more money out of everyone. Genre's like plunderphonics and hip hop are totally stifled by that sort thing. If an artists wants to cut a loop from a decades old song in a fair use kinda way then they should be able to without having to alert the original artist and have the original artists label come after them for royalties.
Kimbra doesn't even know how amazing she is.
Kimbra and Gotye are both so soft spoken. Too good for this world.
Can't get any better than that. Win a Grammy and have Prince (RIP) hand it to you. What a night for Gotye and Kimbra. Can't believe time has passed so quickly. Already mid April, 2022.
I miss Gotye...please come back and make more music
Hopefully they'll not copy a Brazilian artist this time and go bankrupt, again lmao.
@Geraldo Melo, give me a link to the so called original Brazilian song. And why has no one heard of it?
@@geraldomelo8371 everybody samples from a song DUA LIPA HAS THE NUMBER 1 SONG OF 2021 AND GETTING SUED RN.

amazing how we are young and somebody that i used to know came out during the same year and are both nominated. both such great songs!
I don't know if there is a more humble artist than Gotye. He's the only artist I can think of who goes out of his way to make LESS money. Like who other than Gotye takes their Grammy award winning song and then proceeds to not monetize it on UA-cam?
Wish he could make more music 🥺💔 SIUTK is Awesome!!!!!!!
It has billions of views as well. He’d have made a shit load off of it.
Gotye and Kimbra really deserved this. They are wonderful humble and lovely people, and the track is absolutely amazing. Well deserved award+

When the grammys where actually honest
Gotye won a Grammy and then became somebody that we used to know.
One year later thank you for making me laugh out loud. 😂😂😂.
Ugh this hits deeps😂
This is actually a legendary moment
This guy made a smashing hit and then just disappeared

0:16 look at that nominees, an era of great and iconic musics
Gotye is a unique songwriter who creates music that may not necessarily win Grammy's but is definitely brilliant. I don't believe winning awards is his main motivation. He is an original musical artist.
We all miss prince what a great artist
To everyone saying he fell off, he actually didn't ask for the spotlight. he got famous accidentally and he doesn't want that lifestyle. he's still making music in Australia, just not the kind of music radio cares to play.
Well deserved to win ROTY by beating the following fellow nominees
- the Black Keys for Lonely Boy
- Kelly Clarkson for Stronger
- Frank Ocean for Thinkin Bout You
- Taylor Swift for We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, and
- Fun. for We are Young
It’s an incredible list. And no doubt about it, they deserved it.
@@walter2530 there were 6 nominations for ROTY, and Kelly, Taylor, and Fun. were strong contenders. However, two new faces beat them all.
It was such a amazing year i love all the songs 😩
Only Gotye + Kimbra, Frank Ocean and The Black Keys are worth it.
that Taylor song is a sneak
There‘s so much going on in this video. Thoughts can‘t help but drift to the contemplation of a love triangle - they both just look so incredibly fond of the guy, and a swell and dashing fella he seems to be too. Prince is just on his own plane (and is now there permanently). It‘s one of those (award) moments where you sense it‘s the recipients‘ entire life condensed into this one moment.
People sometimes mention him as one hit wonder I mean isn't it better to be a one hit wonder than creating random quality less songs.
true, but all of his songs are wonderful. there's something so distinct, a completely unique production. and that voice. powerful, raw, unfiltered, passionate, tender voice. gotye is very very talented and down to earth, a pure artist
The thing is that he didn't expect the song to blow up the way it did and neither to become a mainstream musician. He could've grabbed that one-in-a-million opportunity but he decided to stay low profile and just create music for the art and not for the charts just like kids say now days
@@basetoace3951 facts, he is a true musician. In it for the love of making music 🙌
So happy for Gotye. Absolutely deserved the win.
Best speech ever! This song will never get old. At 39 sec.... they just hold hands very naturally..it so cute
Kimbra should be more promoted than she is. Underrated phenomenal artist and singer.
I'm betting she's going to step back from performing and start producing. She definitely has the technical chops to pull it off...
can we take a moment to appreciate that lineup of nominees what a good era that was

I am anxiously awaiting Gotye's return. He has so many other amazing songs.
So humble. Only beautiful souls could have lyrics and hit notes so impactful.
Well deserved winner. Congrats!!!
I love how all the nominees are happy about them taking the award
Honored twice that night. Once by winning the record of the year and just as meaningful being told by the one and only Prince by saying he loved this song. I love the song it's an all time classic and I loved Prince.
Gotye - "drops a bomb and disappears"
A well deserved award for an iconic song. Nice to see Gotye and Kimbra sharing the moment 👏👏👏👏
Making Mirrors is still my favorite album to this day! 🙌🏼
Pretty impressive to essentially only have one big hit but it be one of the more iconic songs of a generation
The thing is he didn't even want it to be a big hit lol
The internet did that.
Now he just does music with the band, the basics in Australia.
Woah…each of those nominations deserved an award. Such great times ❤
Interestingly Gotye recognises and acknowledges the obvious musical hierarchy in the presenter of his award, and then diminishes its importance when his own accomplishment is being recognised above other musicians. Very gracious and humble man.

Prince was such a beautiful man. ❤️
It is the same with many artists and performers. When they have a hit, it is usually a big one. For some reason to me, this song never grows old for me in that I can hear it all the time and everywhere I go and still feel excited. I don't feel this way about any other song. I think we should be thankful for all of our favorite songs, music, movies,, books, magazines, newspapers, photos, etc. Do you have a big hit song? Remember, accessing one's creative energy is a gift. Gotye and Kimbra have lots of talent. It has never been every day that one has a bit hit.
I'm in love with this song. My #1 song! Ever! Congratulations to Gotye and Kimbra. Hope more songs 🎵 and more Grammy awards too!
Incredibly well deserved.
That song will be played and talked about decades from now.
You couldn't be anything but humbled if Prince gave you an award for music.
That would be so cool having Prince say he loves your track then hands your Grammy to you. I love how Wally didn't make it about himself and Kimbra did the same. Such a humble acceptance speech.
"And thank you Prince" mood
I'm watching & writing this in April 2024. My f'n goodness. I never realized how stacked this category was. All of these songs are classics! And the Academy still absolutely got it right. That's just how transcendent this song was in a pool of timeless songs.
been looking for this video for years finally!
The greatest song ever. What a humble guy he is.
It’s a masterpiece
If Prince said "I love this song" about my song I'd be paralyzed by the pressure and never make any more music too. I feel for you Gotye.

Gotye is so humble and respectful I wish all performers and artists were as humble and respectful as he
13 years later and that song still slays. I saw him live in an outdoor venue back then, and surprisingly to me, he and his band put on a hell of a show. Good for him - he probably made a ridiculous amount of money and now can finance his dreams.
