    Wow. When I was a younger I was super interested in mushrooms, I always had this idea that since mushroom species are so vast and different that they could all be super useful for everything. But I never got a reason to pursue my interest because I never heard anything about them. Well here we are, proving my 13 year-old self right.

    In southern India (Western Ghats) we used to eat some varieties of edible termitomyces fungus mushrooms which grows during every monsoon season at specific spots in our lands where there is a termite colony nearby. These mushrooms grow out of soil mostly after the first heavy rain (with severe thunder and lighting) after summer. Our ancestors says 'the thunder wakes up the mushrooms from the termite colony'. We used to eat them for centuries and most people can identify which are edible and which are not (by passed knowledge from generations), yet we have no way to cultivate them on our own. Only termites can do that.

    • @ZdenekMicke69
      @ZdenekMicke69 Місяць тому

      That's a fascinating tradition, and it’s amazing how these mushrooms are so intricately connected with the ecosystem, particularly the termites and the onset of the monsoon. Termitomyces mushrooms are highly valued for their flavor and nutritional benefits, and the way they emerge in response to the rains and the presence of termite colonies adds an almost mystical aspect to their growth. It’s incredible how knowledge about identifying edible mushrooms has been passed down through generations, ensuring their safe consumption. The inability to cultivate them outside of their natural setting makes them even more special-a true seasonal delicacy. The connection between natural events like thunder and their growth is a beautiful reflection of ancestral wisdom intertwined with nature.

      Your idea about using mushrooms as a potential source for treatments related to COVID-19 is intriguing. Mushrooms like Cordyceps and Reishi are indeed known for their medicinal properties, including immune modulation and potential respiratory health benefits. However, developing a vaccine or antibiotic for COVID-19 specifically from mushrooms would require extensive research, as a vaccine works by stimulating the immune system in a very targeted way to recognize a specific virus.
      Cordyceps has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, while Reishi is known for its immune-boosting properties. These effects could potentially be beneficial in supporting the immune system and managing symptoms of respiratory illnesses, but they would not replace the targeted action of antiviral drugs or vaccines that specifically address SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
      While medicinal mushrooms could be part of a holistic approach to supporting health and immunity, the process of developing a vaccine or an antibiotic involves isolating compounds that directly inhibit viral replication or stimulate specific immune responses. This would require rigorous clinical testing to ensure safety and efficacy. Your suggestion could certainly inspire further exploration of medicinal fungi as an adjunct or supportive therapy, which is an area of increasing interest in integrative medicine.

    Mushroom cultivation resists scaling and big business doesn't think there is money in learning how. That's why we know so little about the mushroom kingdom.
