    Good to see an old dirt scratcher find a home. I just brought home a 1950's Scoopmobile. I didn't know it was there until the building in front of it collapsed. Sitting outside for 51 years, I hooked up a battery, gave it a squirt of fuel down the carb & it fired up like it was 1969.

    I can't tell you the number of years I went by there and saw that old shovel stuck in those trees with that bucket up in the air and thought that thing will just rot into the ground!
    I always thought it was kind of a shame because they were supposed to be top-of-the-line in their day.

    I worked for a UK crane and excavator maker in the UK (NCK Rapier) and another maker was Ruston Bucyrus (UK equivalent of this machine) These old machines were the workhorses of their day and it's great to see examples being resurrected. Great work boys, Keep it up.

    Thanks for a very enjoyable set of videos. That cable back hoe is probably pretty rare. It looks like it would take a good paint job, with some big time rust removal. You were blessed that the water getting in through the exhaust, and of course freezing, didn't burst your block, or cylinder walls. It is hard to beat the satisfaction of getting, first an old engine running again, and then restoring the other functions.

    Love it,

    Can't imagine spending 8-12 hours a day, day in and day out, working that thing. A lot of levers to work. Great job though...not letting her rot away. Still some life left in the old girl. @@rudyschwab7709 No doubt. Men were tough and rugged back in those days. They worked hard and was proud of the work they did. The young people today wouldn't know what a "real days work" is. We had a RB17 at the brickworks where I worked,and I got the foreman to let me read up the handbook. Once you get the hang of the multi-function levers she's quite easy to operate. We had the machine set up as crowd shovel,working the quarry. Sorry to see her go eventually when the business closed down,but I bet she's still running now after forty years! Incidentally,releasing the main clutch,then pressing a pedal on the left,then re-engaging the clutch,enabled you to fast-track forwards. Main clutch must not be disengaged for more than three minutes or so. Disengage to start up,then release the lever forward to operate. Two levers to the left convert from operating to tracking,depending on their position. Slew lever becomes tracking lever,lever to the left of that is steering lever. Do not operate both together.

    That was the worst part of driving a tracked machine, loading it on a low loader (Low boy) especially on a frosty morning, Cranes that run on rail tracks were even worse, and the ground was never level so we often took a run at it.
    Tracked machines gave me great training for when I bought a twin engine boat, she could 360 in her own length putting one forward and the other in reverse. Plus mooring was a doddle keeping the rudder amidships and then steering with the engines.

    In 1971 I took my exam as a crane operator with a bucyrus in the Belgian army, I had to dig 11 meters of ditch in an hour. But I think it was a heavier type, the engine starter was a smaller petrol engine and you had to turn on the diesel engine cylinder by cylinder. The crane was also equipped with a grab bucket. I passed.

    A company I worked for had 2 30Bs they worked one and the second was buck up. The company was a large logging company maybe. 3 equipment operators but only 1 could run it a guy named Hawkeye. They needed him so much he drove a company pickup. He was the only operator outside of family drove a company pickup.
    I was a mechanic there and I remember replacing the swing bearing. Now that's a job.
    This must be a 15b you have just guessing.

    I'd venture a guess that most of the basements in the postwar suburban development I grew up in were dug with similar machines. Being in Ohio those machines were everywhere.

    Hello from Donegal in the land of shamrocks and Guinness. Ruston and Hornsby were a company in Lincoln England who formed a partnership with Bucyrus and produced Ruston Bucyrus cranes the most popular was the RB22 but went up to over a hundred. Wikipedea is worth a read as they made ship and railroad engines and rolling stock

    A lot of Similar machines were sold here into Australia and New Zealand,most being built by the partner company in the UK as Ruston Hornsby ,Ruston Bucyrus etc. When I was a little kid at school in NZ we were all taken up to a hill to watch one working in a swampy bit of ground,using mats and the operator blowing up big trees in the mud with dynamite... .10 or so years later me and some mates were playing around in an industrial area and parked behind a factory was the same machine ,looking just like your 15B .

    • @RustyRescues
      @RustyRescues  5 років тому +1

      No kidding? That's interesting! Does the one behind the factory still sit there?
