    Cold water first of all enters the exhaust manifold, then it goes to the cylinders' heads where thermostats start opening quite soon allowing water to show at the telltale.
    As I've seen at the service manual
    poppet valve allowing water to flow around the cylinders to exit towards the lower unit doesn't start opening until rpm go over 1500.

    I usually put the gasket onto the power head

    I have removed the heads, got them resurfaced and removed & cleaned out the exhaust plate and water passages also replaced the poppet valve/pressure relief valve. New water pump and gear oil.

    This motors tell tail was very strong but overheating on one bank

    Was your tell tale water extremely hot? I have that issue and have replaced everything except those gaskets.

    I have a question for you when Im blowing in my Tell tale and it's going out in my shaft would that mean I need chang my exhaust plate gasket. I'm having trouble on my 200 hp Mercury pissing.?

    • @haneysgarage2631
      @haneysgarage2631  4 роки тому

      Bornonfire it can go back thru your pickup tube in your exhaust housing that connects to the water pump if your using compressed air and be careful not to use high pressure it can make seals fail

    • @haneysgarage2631
      @haneysgarage2631  4 роки тому

      Bornonfire if it’s leaking air inside the cowling then it could be the powerhead gasket

    • @haneysgarage2631
      @haneysgarage2631  4 роки тому

      Bornonfire if your referring to your outboard flowing water into the exhaust housing instead of the tale tail then you may not have aligned the pickup tube with the water pump housing correctly

      Thank you . There is a small hole on the other side of the tell tail in the shaft. When I'm blowing in it I come out in the shaft. I'm trying to troubleshoot it not pissing. I have a 200hp exact motor to your 150hp.

      I thought after the water completed cycle through the water jacket it went out the exhaust. And The Tell-Tale

    I have a 1987 150 mercury xr2. I am having temp issues at WOT. Also my water pressure gayge goes to 40 psi and sometimes higher. I cant figure out what is causing this. Do you have any idea or have you seen this before.. I have replaced poppet, thermostats and impeller. temp sensor and temp gauge..

    • @haneysgarage2631

      TheSwackster it could be restricted passages in the water jackets I would run salt away after each saltwater use and mabye try using Barnacle Buster with an external pump but it may clog up like mine did I checked the thermostat housing after doing mine and both thermostat housings were full of salt debris that moved from the barnacle buster solution, I ended up pulling the heads and cleaning the water jackets but I should have done the flush about 3 times first, the motor I have was used primarily in salt water. Remove the thermostats and lower unit and tape a tygon hose to the water pick up tube and let a marine bilge pump solution using a garbage can to cycle the solution for several hours

    • @haneysgarage2631
      @haneysgarage2631  4 роки тому

      I forgot to mention that using the Barnacle Buster solution can possibly cause damage to the head gasket especially if it hasn’t been changed in the past but it might be ok just depends on how salted the gasket is on the inside because it eats away at salt and corrosion

    Quick question on the starboard side head do you have a water jacket plug? I just pick a 1993 or 92 xr6 150 and someone removed it and I’m not sure what went there I found a hose but it has a t connection with only one hose hooked to it. And there isn’t much on the internet about these engines. It a brass nut with a hole in the center looks like a PCV value on a car.

      David Gardner are you referring to the water jacket hoses that connects the cooling water to the heads together and then out the tail tail or is it a breather hose/vacuum hose

    • @unsaltedlife5998
      @unsaltedlife5998 4 роки тому

      Haney’s Garage I know there is 2 thermostats that connects together but under the number 1 spark plug there is a some sort of water jacket I don’t know if that’s for a temperature gauge or a warning buzzer of the drivers side or port side both sides have them and are missing on my engine the both have a tan wire bullet connectors

    • @haneysgarage2631
      @haneysgarage2631  4 роки тому +1

      David Gardner that might be the temperature overheat sensor there is usually one on both heads, does it just dead end inside the head

    • @unsaltedlife5998
      @unsaltedlife5998 4 роки тому

      Haney’s Garage yeah I did find it it’s called a thermal control valve it make the carburetors run rich until the engine warms above 100 degrees then opens allowing more air into the carburetors. Just thought it was strange to have a hose that ran from the carburetors to the head. And thanks for replying to me and the help. Just got this and it’s SO much different than my OMC 2 strokes I’ve been working on forever.

    Have You Thought About Contacting L6 MercSon in The USA Who is a Very Technically Knowledged on All Large Mercury 2 Stroke Outboards.
    I Personally Think You Still Have A Blockage in The Midsection or IT Could Be Drawing Air IN Somewhere Possibility A Crack Etc.

    • @haneysgarage2631
      @haneysgarage2631  Рік тому +1

      I did everything I could to look for cracks and blockages I used a small bore scope to look in the passages it’s running good for the last 2 years redid the vacuum lines and cleaned and leveled the carburetor floats new needle and seats been running 160 degrees after full throttle no thermostats to flush out anything else that I might have missed scraping it out.
