The correct timing makes a world of difference on these motors. Yep the upper screws are for the idle and WOT timing the lower two are for carb cam and roller adjustment and carb full open setting so the shutters don't become the stops. Congratulations on a successful video
I’ve had great results adding timing! Using 98octane and synthetic oil there’s a few hp to be had over factory! For customers that prefer cheap fuel I stick to factory settings
Id like to add (not everyone will agree), i have one of these and the best way i found to get power out the gate all the way through was i broke the tab that moves the trigger off from the throttle linkage and pinned the trigger full advanced, However this will cause higher idle than most want but does help tremendously, now yes there are downfalls with doing this but if you keep up with maintenance they run amazing this way, i as well gave it 3 degrees of timeing with ported and polished carbs running 40:1 with 87 octane and it has woken this thing up!
My friend i have the same motor , but the last time i saw the power is going a lot down , so i give it to my mechanic to check it , he found the second cylinder is not working , over all is working every thing !! And he doesn't know what else to do !! Do you have any idea what is happening wrong ??? Thnks !
Watched this so mamy times and it helped me get the timing spot on om my marina 75 you explain it so well but at the very end of the video when you are tinkering with the idle screw there is no explanation, i thought the idle scew also adjusts the cranking timing, if you adjust to suit idle are not altering the idle timing you just set?
Suggestion ... you should be running water in the lower end while setting the timing and running the engine ... to run the water pump impeller dry is not good!
This motor had been sitting in a field for 20 years so I wasn’t too worried about the impeller because I was planning on changing it anyway. Only a dummy doesn’t change the impeller before hitting the water with an unfamiliar engine.
HI good video, well explained, I have a 4 cylinder 115 HP 1989 mercury outboard 2x2 and I was going to check the timing, do you know if the settings are the same as your motor
The timing will be completely different for that as well as how to do the timing you’re gonna have to time each bank separately I don’t have much knowledge of it but I will. I’m sure one day as I have a 115 Evinrude v4. Dig into it and let me know what you find. I’d be very interested to know.
Hello mate going to be doing the same adjustment on my mariner 50hp. Just a quick one when you set your TDC to 0 then explained about setting idle to 4 degrees was that to the left or right hand side of TDC? I’m assuming to the left is BTDC and the right is ATDC
Why yes I’m sure it melted into a little pile by the time I was done. But I didn’t care. I was going to be putting a new impeller in it anyway. If you’re going to be trying to make an old motor work, don’t bother going for a drive unless you’ve changed the impeller first.
My motor splutters a bit when you put the hammer down, suspect it is timing, thank you to the video I understand it perfectly now, 200hp efi - idle timing is meant to be 0-9 ATDC (I'm guessing you set idle speed here hence the range) and max is 16 BTDC at cranking speed, 22 BTDC at WOT. - Will adjust this and see if it removes the spluttering response.
Awesome video, hard to find helpful videos like this. I was curious since I don’t have a timing light if I could do adjust the timing screw while it’s running on water? Motor runs like a top but starts and idles very rough
Thanks for the suggestion! This is my first boat, I’m having trouble finding a place to buy parts for my outboard. It’s a 89 mercury 115 two stroke. I’m not sure the model number or where to find it. Also do you have any idea where the fuel filter is on these outboards? I can’t see one@@donerightbydadproductions
Nope it’s just off. This motor sat outside with no cover on anything for years. And the motor was able to turn over so I said I can bring this back to life and it had a good compression in each cylinder.

Get rid of your oil injection pump. If it fails, you don’t know until the motor blows up. If you delete it, all your gas is premixed and you can never run out of oil. Don’t trust those oil pumps.
I have a 90 merc. That I'm having trouble getting the motor out of my 94 searay jet boat. I believe I have all the bolts out but I'm not sure, can you suggest anything?
If so, to separate the impeller from the shaft, you just get it hot with a torch and the nylon will melt, and that you will be able to get the night off
I know it sounds weird. But next time you take it out. Try squeezing if your ball at the same time is wide-open, throttle see if it changes if it does it’s a fuelling issue not enough fuel flow.
That’s a “known issue”. Mine popped out at about 18 years. Replaced it as it wouldn’t stay put. Last day on the water before changing it I brought it in to the dock held together with a bread wrapper twist tie. 😂
What year motor is this I have one looks the same that I was left with a boat that my pop left me when he passed and can't find any id tag anywhere any help would be greatly appreciated
Hi gyus i have a mergury 4cylinder. If my top piston is out the marks on the flywheel is on the other side of the timming window.could the flywheel key be broken?any advice plz.motor start quick.takes bit long to get on planespeed.
Also, what horsepower is the motor and what kind of prop is on the motor usually with most outboards it’s a you probably want a 17 pitch prop. If it takes a long time to get up and out of the water, usually it’s because you have the wrong prop. You probably have a 19 or bigger.
Is it possible to have the timing simply go out when it is running? I am running an 87 mercury 80HP. It was running fine all spark plugs spark getting spark, the motor wont even start with carb cleaner.
@@donerightbydadproductions you nailed it, I pulled the flywheel, found out the previous person that had the flywheel off stripped out the flywheel nut. The flywheel key is definitely the issue.

Cheap lol. We have max 94 and that’s rare. It’s max 93 and that’s $4.69 a gallon now.

I’m trying to convert my 75 hp into this 90. Gonna try this later today👌🏽 Great video!
Thanks I reset all my settings on the motor start like a treat ❤ Your a champ

Yeah adjustment bolt length is important..... once in awhile.

Pretty much just carburetters to make the change
Great vid but one question: Every time you're cranking it, aren't you risking damaging the impeller without water going to it? Thanks

That should do the trick.
FINALLY Someone showed me how. Thanks 🙏
No problem buddy.
Does it hurt the water pump when you dry crank?
Well excessively dry cranking. I’m sure it can’t be much help.
Looks like it was fired dry at the end
Bonjour
Pouvez vous faire un schéma du comment vous avez câblé la lampe strombo !?😊
Merci!
I have a 70 Mercury elpto 89 3cyl. The instructions show 0-4 advance and a max of 28. and where exactly should I adjust the ignition with the lamp?
Upper arm there’s a screw there. Same kind of area as your throttle linkage but the higher one.
Hy bud...is the impeller getting affected on all those dry runs while you're doing the adjustments?
Lol well ya. But it was done to begin with. I would not do this if I was trying to keep the integrity of the impeller
Can you hammer the plug gaps closed and reinstall the plugs, and wouldn't that ground the plug out?
Don’t do tgat
Hey bud, great video. Are the plugs still installed or removed? Thanks
I have switched plugs. Thanks. I’m glad you like the videos. I enjoy doing them.
This video is very helpful. Now im wondering about balancing the carburetors? Ive done orher engines with vacuum gauges.
That would be some sweet tuning
Pretty easy to make a manometer, they work excellent
Awesome video, hard to find helpful videos like this. I was curious since I don’t have a timing light if I could do adjust the timing screw while it’s running on water? Motor runs like a top but starts and idles very rough
Yes, absolutely you could do it in the water by ear. But I would recommend maybe checking out your carburetters first or a week fuel delivery.

Will this work on a 94 Mariner/Mercury 100 two stroker?? Looks Exact same setup
Sure will
Are there any gains to be had by removing the cover in front of the carb intakes? Your cover seems to be missing.
Nope it’s just off. This motor sat outside with no cover on anything for years. And the motor was able to turn over so I said I can bring this back to life and it had a good compression in each cylinder.
Does a shake at idle mean I need to adjust timing or is that more likely carb or just normal for 2 stroke
No 2 stroke shakes. But how bad?
I have a mariner 75 same problem i cant fix it 😢😢 , can you share a picture
It’s either going to be your high windings in your stater or your switch box
Would the 4 BTDC and 22 at WOT be the same on all 4 cylinder motors, I have a 1989 115 2x2
No yours will be timed differently

Could an out of time motor cause the throttle timing rod to pop out of the plastic keepers?
No I would say the clip is just old and worn out.
