Tks for these videos. I have a 95 Mariner 2 stroke (basically same as Merc Blackmax of the same yr) and i'm so frustrated at not being able to fix my overheating - i'm ready to sell the boat. Good luck brother
For studs that are corroded/stuck, there is an old trick where you use the nut with a homemade spacer between the nut and the midsection casting, turn the nut to "jack" the powerhead up by a very small amount (1/16" ) . Usually this is enough to loosen the stud.
Can't wait for the next video, I bet the overheating is fixed. You are doing it rignt and with care. The impeller blades probably started the problems. People treat these engines as if it was an ordinary outboard. It's NOT, the race version of the V6 is a full on F1 H2O race motor ( 400+ HP and up to 10000RPM ), yours is a "calmed down" version of a stunning engineering masterpiece. Treat it accordingly and it will run for another 50 years. Greetings from a fellow "Merc-aholic" from Sydney Australia.
So I made you a video on cleaning out the adapter plate on a 2.0/2.5. There's more passages under the first plate. I love the way you aren't afraid to tackle a job most wouldn't. I hope you got it cleaned out enough, if not, now is a good time to put solid motor mounts in it. By the way that fancy cowl cost new, 4 times what you bought that boat for:)$$$$
Yeah, I have had even the short studs have so much corrosion around it that it was lifting the whole boat, motor and trailer up off the ground!! *I've had to go to other marinas to drill out the studs to get powerheads loosened up..
That was so much fun! It felt like it was only a five minute video. Even with all this work put into that boat, it's really looking like a good $500. All that sorely needed maintenance will keep it going for many years.
Smart to take it all down, replace gaskets, yes that gunk is head gasket leaking. Those extra parts would definitely cause over heat. Now if it's not you can raise that engine
To answer your question at 13:11 - it's possible that you aren't seeing liquid water coming out of the exhaust because it's turning into steam in the combustion chambers. But I would expect the pistons to be way cleaner than what you showed if most of the water was being routed there. Unless you are talking about when it wasn't running at all just on the hose.
Hey I don't know maybe I missed the day or I'm behind a day I think it's Sunday but anyway I'm happy Sunday or Monday Sunday is even better post that MercMondays any day tell you the truth only thing matters is you finally got another Merc Monday episode that I can't get enough of just let you know I'm praying that you get that outboard figured out they can be a little finicky but when you get them right there ain't an outboard on the water that can keep up with them owned a couple of them and there was days I just wanted to unhook it and let it sink to the bottom of the ocean but when it ran like it should there wasn't anybody out there unless they had another Merc that would keep up I am just hoping one day I have the opportunity with the finances to own me another speed boat with a Mercury 2-stroke screaming and throwing oil burning smoke all over my fellow boaters knowing all of them are talking s*** but deep down they just wishing they had a Mercury 2-stroke hanging on back of there boat 😂
If the engine is good it might be the hull engine combination. In other words perhaps position of engine is causing water to pass intakes. It might be possible to check this by moving engine down as test.
Nope, whole gearcase is buried underwater, I had Sarah go back there and film when I was on plane. Once I solve overheating, I'll raise it up and gain a lot of speed, hopefully!
@@ADDvanced I was thinking more of a ventilation issue caused by the shape of the hull. Even if the gearbox is underwater. Its unlikely that's for sure but not impossible.
Seems like you did pretty well in your investigation after all you did find some smoking guns. Chunks of impeller…. I‘d have liked to see you run some wire or something through any passages it would go through in order to find the blockage. I believe the pee stream being before the engine is telling you that your water pump is working but as you know you should have a whole lot more water coming through the exhaust.
I bet if you move the battery and fuel tank farther forward the back of the boat wouldn't be so close to sinking when you slow down. Either that or add tiny bit of ballast weights to very front of boat. But yeah, reducing just a few pounds from the back would be a big improvement.. Even quicker takeoffs
Then it won't respond to trim at top speed as well. Trust me, I'm dealing with the opposite issue. Too much ballast too far forward. I wish I had that big central tank in the back. I put my battery way back there to compensate. Finally after putting ~100lb+ of interior (carpet, bench seat, etc) it's starting to respond better.
In previous episodes I’ve run with them and without them and replaced them. No change the entire time. Water should come out the exhaust no matter what yet I’m getting none.
If the oil injection was removed and the sensor was not disconnected you will get an alarm that can be confused with the overheating alarm. I'm trying to find out if my system is even working. I don't get any beeps when I turn on the ignition and I haven't had the boat in the water yet. I have to locate the sensor and check it then chase it down from there. I already know the wire coming off it is tan.
That's awesome! Most of the people I know won't even try to fix their own sh!t no,instead they pay thousands of dollars to someone who knows nothing about water engines but they do know engines,so that's how I make thousands of dollars fixing rich peoples sh!t,I mean water engines...
You should have removed the stack and separated the exhaust adapter and water plate. From what I see with all the impeller pieces, it only takes a small piece to block up a passage. I have seen it happen more over my 28 years as an outboard tech. It appears it’s not dumping the hot water.
**and good job by the both of you! I'm gonna call it fixed, because if it wasn't then I'd think you would be grasping at straws and trying to come up with ANYTHING to help finish fixing it...
So how can you leave us hanging wondering if you got it fixed. How about you comment back and let all of us know if you got your overheating issues figured out.i bet I am not the only one wanting to know if you got your Merc.back screaming across water. No rush I am sure you're busy with all your other projects. And I know you have said that UA-cam is not your full-time job. I get that.Hope to hear some good news on your over-heating problem.takeit easy don't over stress you will figure it out. Peace out
There's a guy on youtube, he has probably one of the best outboard related channel and watch his last video, and maybe you will have the answer to you problem. The channel is Dangar Marine.
I've watched every single one of his videos and it still wouldn't help me diagnose this outboard, lol. He has a lot of issues going on here and the cooling systems are complex. It's possible we still don't know what the biggest cause was. Impeller bits everywhere and leaking head gaskets may have only been some of the problems.
Yeah, but that is ONLY because the thought of having it fixed and being able to go flying across the water, without issue, overtakes the short attention span... I've had many a night doing this crap till the wee hours of the morning just so I could be out on the lake the next day!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Loving this series, but I'm wondering if you have plans to pickup the SST series again? I'm a boat novice and picked up an aristocrat earlier this summer. It needs basically identical work to your sst done, so I'm curious if you plan on finishing that? I need all the video help I can get so I don't mess it up. Keep up the good work!
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
Steam is not normal. Slight smoke on cold start or a rich condition is. From his video it looked like he had a mix of steam and two stroke smoke. Was kind of hard to tell.
Guysa, you are setting too high on the transom. Lower it 4 to 6 inches and try again. Up on plane you are too far outa the water.... This is also why you bounce up and down like being trimmed too far up.
Sorry man, no way. It is WAY low. The jackplate is way down, and the water pickup is completely buried underwater when on plane. Every boat will porpoise if you trim high enough as the thrust angle loses effectiveness.
Tks for these videos. I have a 95 Mariner 2 stroke (basically same as Merc Blackmax of the same yr) and i'm so frustrated at not being able to fix my overheating - i'm ready to sell the boat. Good luck brother

Top content as usual. Was wondering if you guys had made any progress with that motor. Looking forward to the next chapter!

You found some culprits!! I’m going with it’s fixed.

Looking like progress maybe? Also that cowl will look sweet. Matchy matchy. Do we get the next episode tomorrow? 😁
I think you are doing a pretty god job with this, for not being very experienced. More than what could be expected. Props.
You could definitely use some water diverters between the cylinders and block , helps have more even water flow !!
Excellent stuff team
Suggestion, When hammering on studs should put nut back on and hammer on nut.

I want to buy your "kiekhaefer" hat !!! Old school and VERY cool.
So I wonder if the head gasket was a symptom of poor water flow due to all the crap in there preventing adequate coolant flow.
Probably. Multiple high heat cycles probably weakened it.

I'm guessing impeller shards
With thermostats do same as heat sensor test you did
Clean piston = water in that cylinder

Rev it on trailer so the thermostat can open up
Chunks where they shouldn’t be, and leaky head gaskets. Please tell me you did a compression test before you took the heads off.
That would have been a good idea....
We're can I find info on casting numbers how many bore sizes 175 2stroke? Ty
Not sure, maybe try scream n fly?

I’ll go out on an old impeller blade and say it’s fixed because of the head gaskets.
Whats the verdict?
Did you try the water pump
See episode 3 and watch intro again.
"Short attention span"...are you sure? I just watched you display insane fixatedness on a boat motor all day long.
Yeah, but that is ONLY because the thought of having it fixed and being able to go flying across the water, without issue, overtakes the short attention span...

Well?
Poppit valve?
It's new!

waer pump- head gasket
Both are new
That "steam" is definitely normal for a 2 stroke...

The best thing to do would be replace it with a four stroke two strokes are just so bad for the environment
Too heavy for this style boat.
looks like steam
Watch some AFL, it's real football, very little stop starts, all ball in play time.. not like NFL which has like 18mins of play.
Head innuendo??? Really???
