A Walk Around Glastonbury And The Somerset Levels

- In this video Abbie experiments with a new walk. They begin in Glastonbury near the Rural Life Museum, then heads up to the famous Glastonbury Tor and St Michaels Tower. From there, their route takes them onto the flat lands of the Somerset Levels, alongside waterways, marshes and metal detectors. They see herons, dippers, guillemots, egrets and more, gets slightly stuck on the wrong side of a water way, climbs countless fences, and loses a path. Thankfully they make it back to town in one piece, and ends the walk exploring the quirky main high street and incredible remains of Glastonbury Abbey.

Thanks again Abbie, I’m 72 & have a 12 1/2 year old dog & together we are doing a lot more walking in the area I live in New Zealand. And I’m taking more notice of the things I see as though I’m talking to a camera. Of course being a young country there is very little history to relate but I’m loving it & so is Bobby.

Another memory lane walk for me Abbie! I grew up in West Pennard and Glastonbury. Used to play in the river with the Weir and the Dippers! I still go back to Glastonbury regularly to see my parents and on every visit climb the Tor as a rite of passage. Thank you for sharing. Stay Wild!

I remember visiting Glastonbury in 1974. There were " No hippies " signs on shop doors. We knocked on a caravan door and asked if we could spend the night. We could.

Ordnance Survey maps are fantastic. They show a huge amount of detail without being cluttered and it is possible to plan a walk just using the information on the paper
That a Golden Light in the Winter is gorgeous and below 10 degrees is perfect for walking. In the summer to get that light you need to be up at 0500hrs!! I love winter walking. The Levels are curious and have little bits of magic hidden within but it is all too easy to drive on past. Great video.

I live in Wells just along the road from where you were. I also work out on the levels but in the opposite direction from your walk so it was a pleasure to see familiar places from anothers point of view. I have lived here since 2014 and count my self so lucky to live in such beautiful English countryside.

I am so glad I am not the only one who gets slightly disorinentated on the levels! I always end up studying my map every 2 seconds and re-routing by the second half of my walk. However like what happened to you I always end up being rewarded with an animal encounter of some kind that takes my breath away as the levels are so rich snd busy with wildlife. If you hang around until dusk the mummerations are just out of this world at this time of year. Shapwick and Ham wool get so busy with visitors wanting to see them roost so we usually go at dawn to see them take off and when hardly anyone is around, but seeing them gather in groups on the levels first is equally as exciting.

Hey Abbie another triumphant vid and I see what you mean about the light, extraordinary! I have visited Glastonbury and the surrounding area many times over the years and must say that this post brilliantly captures the feeling of the place. I would thoroughly recommend the Levels to any, less abled, walker as it has all that the countryside has to offer, without the gradients! and the town itself has a great vibe, a must for any old hippie like me. Thanks for the memory Abbie, looking forward to your next journey!

Another fantastic vid Abbie. Do you ever worry about losing a footpath/bridleway when you go through a farm or farmers field? Do the owners ever ask you why your on the land. I would worry about trespassing on their ground back accident. Keep up the good work, your inspiring..
Not really. If I am on a designated public right of way then I have every right to be there. I have only once been challenged and that was on the Two Moors Way, as you'll see in the video when it comes out. To be fair, I did go wrong, but literally by 10metres!!!

Stand on the top of Masbury, still less than a thousand feet above sea level and Glastonbury Tor looks really small down below you.
I have only ever been to Glastonbury Tor when I have visitors, although there have been a few of those. I live not far away and there were always people on the top even in the depths of the lockdown.
Whenever I walk that way there is always something new to see and someone different to talk to. I once talked to a lady near West Pennard about her chickens. The two cocks ruled the roost over the whole flock, quite literally. One was called Lenin and the other Stalin. They had no respect for history because one day Lenin did for Stalin! So when I passed there was only one cock.
That was not really a very wild walk, but I bet you met some pretty wild people in the hippy shops in Glastonbury High Street.
Thanks for sharing this one, Abbie. I've been up and down the Tor a number of times but I don't think I've once explored the museum or some of the other nearby sights. I often think of the area as only being suitable for a 'short walk' but I think you've done well with your route, even when faced with obstructions.
Do you often encounter footpath problems in Somerset? Do you report them as and when you do?
Good question. Yes. Mostly signing to be honest. And Devon can be the same. And Dorset. Except on the AONB's and National Parks. But I don't report them. Perhaps I should....... They'd have endless messages from me!!!
@@AbbieBarnesWILD I find that Somerset, in particular, has many 'blackspots' surrounding the AONBs. I've reported a number of issues to Somerset County Council over the years but very rarely see an improvement made and mostly receive an automated response: 'the issue has been resolved'. Few councils, sadly, have the funding to maintain the upkeep and repair to our rights of way network. Someone from Cornwall County Council told me they won't act upon a non-SWCP route unless it poses a serious threat to health.
By contrast, I've often had good results - and seen resolutions reached quickly - with both North Somerset Council and Bath and North East Somerset. But even they're now experiencing cutbacks.
I like to think we have a duty and responsibility to report things, as there's no guarantee that the next person to come along or the one who passed previously, will do it. Some landowners (if only in the minority) clearly don't respect our right for roam. /Rant over. :-)
I think you are spot on. When on the C2C this summer I went over a style and it broke. My knee is still swollen and painful now! So yes, do not want anyone else to have that!! Thanks for highlighting the issue :)

I run group walks around the country throughout the year (see my website for info - although they are not yet online). I do sometimes feature people in videos but I am always cautious of shoving a camera into peoples walks - most like to be outside to get away from tech and people!!
I was thinking like Bear Grylls. Then one day ask celebrities to join you. Like Hikes with Kevin Nealon. Or the guy that tests hot sauces. You deserve it, you're top notch.
Oh and the fly tipping around here is pretty bad, so I assume it is like it everywhere. The fields where I sometimes walk my dogs someone had emptied the contents of what looked like a caravan only a month or so ago and on another walk I was on as I got near Windsor Hill Quarry there was a whole bathroom suite piled up in the hedge, well actually someone had laid it out like a bathroom in the hedge as if it was a funny thing to do!? I think people use the excuse they just don't want to pay the councils commercial rates for disposal (if you turn up kn a van they charge you I believe) as they already pay enough tax in their mind so they just palm it off on someone else, usually the farmer or land owner where it gets dumped :-(
Thats gutting to hear. Our dump costs stupid money and perhaps theirs does too, but it is totally not ever acceptable to fly tip!!!
You'd think, but some folks would run a marathon shackled rather than pay money.
To be honest a lot more has come out of recent regarding fly tipping and it would seem there are cowboy refuse disposal companies at work. Make sure you always get legit disposal certificates from anyone who deals with disposal for you. So make sure a builder who gets rid of your old kitchen or a house clearance company provides it fir your records too.
Apparently people who have not and who innocently engage these services, are the ones who end up with the clearance bill and the fine to boot, not the disposer. Your rubbish, your responsibilty is the council's line and I have to say I totally agree!

Mendip District Council are a disgrace and should not be charging more to dispose of a bag of building waste than it cost to buy the original bag of aggregate.
There are much dirtier places than Mendip though. I worked in the West Midlands for a few months several years ago. Most of the dual carriageways are bordered by a continuous line of car tyres, old mattresses, abandoned shopping trolleys, traffic cones and every other type of junk. I once walked out from a footpath which ended at a road crossing and there was a box of needles and other detritus from some druggies den just tipped out at the edge of the road!

That bathroom suite was years ago when we had not long got our Lurcher from Happy Landings (she's an older girl now). At first I thought it was there incase Nancy Camel went for a wander and got caught out! 😂
Yes it is shocking indeed the cost of disposal in our area but I guess they must increase these costs to cover the rogue tippers.
I know they have a massive problem with it in Frome and a particular pair of scally wags posing as 'professional clearance'. The authorities know who they are but unless they catch them in the act they can't do anything. 🤷♀️ 😐 So the only altetnative is to weigh the responsibility onto people who engage these 'cheaper' services without throughly checking their provider out first.
Is it wet there/hard to walk in?
Ot all depends on the weather, it is a very low area so if its been wet it holds the water. Good boots are a must anyway.
