Glastonbury Walking Tour: Tor & Abbey, A Town of Myths & Legends

- Our walking tour of Glastonbury started on its' outskirts in a free parking bay (BA6 8DB). This is an ancient town, once called Avalon, full of myths and legends and the residents are proudly spiritual, artistic and strongly individual. The street art and personalisation of the houses is not like anywhere else we have been, it makes the urban space so beautiful and interesting. And obviously, it is home to the famous Glastonbury music festival.
From the car we headed straight up, past the revered White Springs Well and Temple, which was sadly shut but is open occasionally for people to bathe in the spring water, and headed to Glastonbury Tor. We were so lucky to have a hazy sunrise and a cloud inversion, it honestly looked magical. A drummer played music which echoed through the valley as we walked up the Tor towards the roofless tower of St. Michael's Church on the summit. The cloud inversion looked like water flowing over the surrounding Avalon Marshes. We spent time taking in the sunrise and listening to a young man play a hand made flute, before heading down into the rather special Avalon Orchard. We decided to eat here, and take in the unusual atmosphere, before walking into the heart of the town and exploring the high street.
The shops are nearly all artisan. Healing crystals, tarot, art and spirituality are the focus of this historical high street. It is also the entrance to the very famous, Glastonbury Abbey, the mythical burial place of legendary King Arthur and Guinevere. The Abbey grounds are adorned with trees, a couple of which are the ancient Glastonbury Holy Thorns, a variant of Hawthorn. As the story goes, Joseph of Arimathea, believed to be related to Jesus and responsible for his burial, landed at Glastonbury via boat and planted his staff in the ground, from it the Holt Thorn grew, blossoming at Christmas and Easter. He is also attributed with bringing Christianity to Britain, and transporting the Holy Grail to Glastonbury from which legendary King Arthur got his divine powers.
The Abbey itself is magnificent, it has a small museum, free tours and grounds and gardens to experience. You have to pay for entry, check the website for prices. The Abbey was founded in the 8th century, and rebuilt in the 14th after a major fire in the 1184. After the rebuild the Abbey became the most famous, wealthy and powerful Benedictine monasteries in England. The 'discovery' of the burial site of King Arthur and Guinevere by the monks helped to pay for the rebuild of the Abbey via funding from tourism and benefactors interested in the legend. We spent hours walking around the ruins and grounds.
We really loved exploring the town, it felt strange, in a good way, different and a bit magical. Worth experiencing for yourself if you get the chance!

Beautiful to witness a cloud inversion on a cold frosty morning, warmth off the sun on your face whilst listening to a flute being played, does it get any better than that. 😁 Great info on the apple Orchids Kat 👍 made me think about a castle in Scotland that had an apple orchid on the grounds. Loved how atmospheric it looked in the mist. Would love to explore the Town Centre, so much unique street art and interesting buildings. Photographers paradise. 📸 The architecture of the Abbey was insane, steeped in so much history. Some gorgeous photos of the Abbey grounds in the mist, loved it. Yes there was someone drumming as we walked up to the Tor, we talked to them too, they do it from time to time for their own enjoyment and to welcome the day in 🥁 🌄 there was so much to take in from orchards to street art, performers and more! A truly magical place. The Glastonbury art trail is something we might look to do separately, around 50+ different street art works around the town!

Hey guys, tried my best to be first, clicked on the link as soon as it popped up, bit was beaten by 4 😥 a lovely misty start to the walk, the rising sun was beautiful 🥰 and the inversion 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I do love them 😍 cool tower at the top of the hill 👍 oh dear, nothing worse than slipping on ya bum, ask Adam , after last night's wildcamp he knows all about that 🤣 a lovely misty orchard 👌 and yes the blossom is very early 😯 lovely place for a cuppa too ☕ you must have been lucky to get a good park spot too 😁 very cool prayer wheels 👌 beautiful stained glass in the chapel. It must have been a crazy amount of work to dig out the crypt 😳 at least some of the ruins were saved for historic preservation. Very cool.to.sew how the monks used to live. And what a lovely pond 🐟🐠 what a great atmospheric day out for you both. Speak soon, atb Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁
The race for 1st is fearce, Tanny was remarkably quick out of teh blocks and to beat Buckley and the Badger, wow! 4th would have been a noble position too, heck you beat the Badger, that in its self is a thing now lol! 🏆🦡☕

This was really well done guys. I love the myths and legends also. I love Villages like this and the architecture and all of the rich medieval type of History. I moved from the East Coast ocean to a small town in the Appalachian Mountains and it's quite charming and quiet and peaceful. Anyway nice to meet you. Love Glastonbury and the Tor and gutted last time we were down there 3 years ago I forgot my GoPro. You hot the nail on the head saying it is such a magical palace, you can feel the vibrations all around there, amazing place. Murder on the Tor sounds like a Agatha Christie movie. No, you cannot have that in the garden lol and I had my photo taken next to her last time we were there, while I was wearing my Tie Dye T Shirt and we must have gone in every shop (both sides of the road when we were there. The Abbey is stunning another place that you can feel the magic and first time I have seen the chappal, we missed that so what a bonus to see it! A misty day only added to the magic of the place, cheers Alan

Glastonbury Tor and St. Michael's Church were truly magical. Loved the view with the inversion, and cool drum and flute musicians. Glastonbury looked like such a quaint village, such interesting artistry. The Abby was beautiful and magnificent, and so many stories swirling around it. The mist made it feel even more mystical!

What a shame the camera didn't capture your fall Ceri. I do like to see folk's mishaps on YT...😎. The misty mysterious orchard was pretty cool with the trees full of mistletoe. I have managed to get mistletoe to take on our garden apple tree and have a big clump.....it took a few attempts though. I like that part of the world, what with the ancient places and good wildlife places. Not been for a good few years though. Thanks for sharing folks. Best wishes, Chris

What an absolutely magical morning, that fog and inversion is just something straight out of a fantasy. Glad Ceri is fine with his fall and didn’t hurt himself. Kat failed to get his life insurance, but at least we get more Tea in Valhalla content 😜
