You can hold the top of the sharpener with your off-hand instead of the base. That will stop the rocking.

I've had this and used it, EVEN if you do that trying to sharpen a large knife the base will slide. The plastic tips do not grip.
Even I know that knife is too large for the sharpener. Of course with the course diamond stones its gonna catch.
Put a rubber bat under so the feet do not move
What if u didn’t hold it down on the bottom but on the top so it doesn’t move when sharpening maybe it’s uncomfortable or more dangerous what do I know 😜. Oh I almost forgot can I have it😃.
You should wipe the edge with toilet paper or a rag. After each different grit. Never cross contaminate different grits together.
It’s a diamond stone. What’s getting contaminated?
I'll say, while it may or may not matter, I sharpen knives for money and I never bother doing something like this, this isn't E. Coli it's just abrasives. I really don't think it makes any difference, but I'd be willing to change my habits if someone can prove me wrong.
On waterstones I wipe the blade every single time, but it's more because it allows me to inspect and feel my progress better than to avoid mixing abrasives when I move to another stone.
Keeping area clean. Both knife and sharpening stone.
ie: you don't wipe your @$$ with dirty toilet paper, you want to clean your behind not add more.
You want the metal shavings out of the equation so they don't add more dirty mess to your process.
Give it a try, keep a few painter rag near and for each stroke or pass wipe knife and stone and you'll see the difference.

Not that my knife sharpening skills are tops. But I noticed that when you sharpened the Buck you angled the blade into the stone instead of it being straight up and down. I think that and a slightly lighter touch and you have a winner. Thanks for the video. Always well done.

As a working musician I had literally no income this year due to Covid19. So I had to go for the cheapest option, what is the Lansky Turnbox. Similar system, but only two angles, 20 and 25 degrees, a set of medium grit ceramic rods and a set of fine rods.
It works. I was flabbergasted, how well it works. Tested it first with my two Opinel, a No. 8 stainless and a No 12 in carbon steel, and I did get real nice edges on this two blades. Then I tried to get some chips out of a small 4" Bowie knife I own for quite a while now, made by Schlieper Germany, and it came out fine. Wonderful.
As last test I tried the Turnbox at my good old trusty Puma Automesser with its 6" blade, with its quite unusual grind and shape. What can I say, it worked great. I like the Lansky system.
I would prefer the Worksharp system because of the three different grits and the multiple angles you are able to use - and the small ceramic rods for serrations.
I would try to hold the double rod on the top while sharpening to secure the rods.
I’ve had really good luck with the Lansky as well! It was my first encounter with ceramic rods of any kind and my mind was blown.
Love the Turnbox. It's amazing.
Instead of holding the box I recommend holding it from the top, I think it works much better.
That's what I was thinking would work best, especially if it's on a flat table and not a stump.

I have their Guided Field Sharpener for use in the woods/camp/field. It works quite well. If I didn't already have a high end sharpening system for home, I would probably look at WorkSharp's new $60 guided angle system just coming out. Thanks and stay well, Aaron!

One of the things that might aid when sharpening on medium grit is to rest your hand on the top of the sharpening system.

Thanks for your reviews. I too have the need for sharpness and have been down a lot of roads worksharp, spiderco etal. The latest I have settled on is Lansky. It’s consistent, best sharpening system I have found for the $$$ and is easy to use. I would like your take on it

What if you put your hand that your not using too sharpen between the two rods, it’s protected and keeps the sharpener stable

Work sharp is awesome I wish they would make a finer grit diamond for their set ups but all in all awesome diamond stones
If you find those magnets disconnecting when sharpening on the medium grit lighten the pressure. A good way to gauge that is if you find the Knife Grabbing that’s a good sign of too much pressure it should Slide smoothly from top to bottom. Good luck
Havent seen a constant pull angle on any of the knifes
I have the other 2 pictured in the video and they work well and use the smaller one a lot with good results.Also like that it has a leather strop attached as well. It is my travel sharpener. I have the electric Work Sharp and it is crazy how many knives I can sharpen at one thie. I also have a Lansky and Spyderco system that work well. That being said I think I prefer the Spyderco system and seem to use it most of the time to maintain edges. Have had it for a while so don't know what they cost now but I think it may cost a little more than this system. Love your reviews, have always used them when I can't decide on a certain knife!!
Hi Aaron . This seems like a really great idea BUT after watching it in my opinion a overall fail . The base could have a slide out outrigger to hold or clamp , in stead of magnetic holds a pop in friction fit would hold better and cut down on cost and four sided stones so as to include a leather strop side , I think this could have all been achieved at a similar price point. I have a Chinese knock off of a Edge Pro Apex 4 that I paid $20 for which included direct shipping from China , I'm not recommending this BUT I get excellent end results with it. I don't own a Lansky fixed angle sharpening system BUT I recommended it to a friend new to knives and sharpening , he loved it and ended up buying his Dad one too. So for me I would buy the similar priced Lansky . Thanks Aaron , neverless another great review and video . Thanks

I've been taught to stop when the tip is still on the stone. You have way more experience than me, do you find it rounds the tip? I also noticed with the Buck you weren't holding the knife at the same angle at the start of each pass. I'm so anal about that. Am I over thinking it?
Try filing the bottoms of the metal rods so they are flat to create more surface area for the magnets to hold onto. I don't know if this will work but it is worth a try if you are willing to modify it. Although if the rods don't turn then they will only be flat on the magnets at one angle.

No doubt it was hanging on the big nicks on the course stone ,however I started with a fairly new buck 110 sport S30V that the bran new razor edge had gone limp. So I held the base against my torso sitting up in my recliner, used the thumb stud as my alignment angle and slowly pulled it towards me , stopping when I got on the tip. 20 strokes on both sides gave a better sharp than when it was new out the box. So tuning up a limp edge on your pocket knife light duty stuff this unit has great potential. The way it folds up nice and neat so portable good kit….. wanting to do repairs on big chips, gouges, rolled edges… not so good . If it’s all you got like the author demonstrated remove the rods from the kit and hold with your hand till catching stops. The new work sharp gen 2 has been drastically refined too..

Lansky rod system mimicking is harder then it seems ;)
Something that connects to that base where you can hold the center of that base down and still sharpen your knife because on the course the birds on the knife are going to shake it and move it but if that is connected to something solid and you can hold the center down that'll work
In GT’s defense, he is using the sharpener per the instructions on the Work Sharp web site.
This is the best oone of its kind,better and cheaper then the sharpmaker,truly amazing.the coarse and medium are diamond,so it'll do m390,s90v,m4,etc without to much work.I love mine,and mine doesn't rock-thing is,you don't need to put pressure on the knife-just draw the blade down and across.Most my peices are high end steels,and those diamond grits work really well
I still use my tried and true Spyderco SharpMaker , and I always use the triangle part of the stones , never the flats , I don't know about you guys but that's what works the best for me....👍🔪🖖
Have you seen the new Worksharp that is similar to a Lansky system? Looks pretty good.
They need to add a clamp system to hold&locked the sharpener in place and add a heavy metal block molded inside the case. Maybe then it's working.
Unnecessary. Just hold it at the top where the rails meet. Problem solved.
I noticed the same problem and it is a major problem. The magnets aren’t strong enough and there’s no deep groove. I Solved the problem easily. I’m right handed. I start with my left hand gripping the left sharpener fairly tightly mid height which easily stabilizes the entire sharpener. Then when I went to reverse to the left side I still used my left hand but pressed it down on the Top of the sharpener and used my right hand again to sharpen the other side of the knife on the left stone. Sounds difficult and confusing but it’s actually easy and it WORKS.
@gideonstactical - A few questions ...1) When you rotate to a different grit, is there a detent or something that holds it square and keeps it from rotating? 2) Are the panels replaceable? 3) When folded up and placed in the base, is it held securely enough to then use it like a traditional flat benchtop sharpener? Like others have said, maybe holding the opposite side of the "triangle" would be more stable.
There is no detent by design watch the work sharp demo video.
Yes the individual panels can be replaced.
Maybe sharpen one side at a time. I would use my free hand to hold the other side.
Spiderco has a similar sharpening kit that’s been out for a while
Yep, I will be a review on it from long ago. Both that Spyderco and this work sharp are fine for just honing in tuning at the edge but re-profiling or taking out damaged portions neither one really works well.
@@gideonstactical this works better than the standard spyderco sharpmaker at re- profiling...simply because comes standard with the diamonds.
Agreed that even with the upgrade cbn or diamond rods I wouldn't want to be doing any re- profile work on either.....to time consuming.

Will give the kme a legit run for the money.
I find the jaws on it are better than the jaws on the kme.. and angle adjustment is so much easier.
If you aren't happy with the o- rings as stop collars....I know the ones for the kme fit. The rod diameters are virtually identical.

As a retired tool and die maker and 77 years I have purchased many of these kits through the years not out of need but out of curiosity. and have always been disappointed . But never paid much for any of them and got what I paid for but this little beast is great even though it's plastic it's built like a tank and my friend has the KME I have used it and the one thing this has KME does not have is fantastic stability. Even my 14 inch Joker bowie fits with room to spare . I have many knives with recurve blades hope they come out with a set of radius stones . Stay safe out there . Happy Trails

It doesn't need to lock. He should have held it at the intersection on top, not the base which is rubberized anyway. It's so obvious.
Arron, please do a review of the Work Sharp Precision sharpener. I would like to hear your opinion on this product. When you were sharpening your Essee l thought you were going to get your thumb once or twice. OUCH!! 😱

Work Sharp stuff is geared towards outdoir knives and pocket knives. I wish they would make a kitchen knife sharpener that works well. They have some kitchen knife sharpeners, but none go below 15 degrees, like this sharpener. My Zwilling Professional S Santoku has a 10 degree angle (29 degrees total). I have yet to find a sharpener that will work for all kitchen knife angles.
i like this b/c of many hones than the work sharb new great clamp on flip, but stone are not enough or causre enought o do a dull knife, lets watch this

Try alternating Rt hand, Lft hand.
I would like to see someone use this system on a custom or midtech.
They need to develop a little saddle on both sides where it locks in and this way they won't Rock back and forth still connected to the magnet but there will be a little latched that'll go over it on both sides and it'll keep it sturdy it won't move all you have to do is hold the little black case it's a real easy fix 👍🤠🖐️😎

It looks like a much more complicated version of the Spyderco Sharpmaker.
I had the Spyderco one for a while and it was good for tuning Blades up much like this worksharp but if you actually needed to re-profile and or take out damage the Spyderco didn’t work very well either.
I think that is a fair comment. You need to upgrade the rods to diamond on the sharpmaker to do that.
Definitely prefer the Spyderco.

If it had a wooden base for weight and employed slots instead of magnets, it would be more useful, so long as you did a few strokes on each side of the blade until you were ready for the ceramic to fine tune. It seems to me that it would be easier to use, be more efficient if the angled sharpening surfaces were positioned on the inside. It would certainly be easier to see for myself if I was holding the knife as vertical as possible. It' looks fine for sharpening by hand without the base, but to work it as intended looks uncomfortable and difficult.
I bought this from Amazon. Hated it and returned it.

I like the concept of the Angle Sharpener but the lack of stability is a huge downside. The potential for getting bit while using the Angle Sharpener is very high.
You're absolutely right I agree with you on this 100%, they need to come out with something more stable something that connects instead of using magnets

I agree totally. Keep em straight and this system works well. Put your hand on top to stop the rocking
First put the sharpener at weight height. Next use your other hand to push down on the top and hold it from rocking. You don’t have to go back in forth on the blade. You can do 4-6 strokes on one side and then the same on the opposite side.
I think it was a very poor idea to use magnets for setting the angles of the stones. For people wanting a similar sharpener, but that is MUCH more stable and has numerous extra options, I would stick with the Spyderco Sharp-Maker. I’ve had it almost 10 years and is excellent for most people that want to out a quick, very sharp edge.
I have both systems.....the base sharpmaker can't do as much as the ws system....unless you buy the cbn and or diamond rods....factor in the sharpmaker is at its lowest price nearly $25 more than the ws....then factor in the cost of the cbn or diamond rods....you are now over $100 in price difference.
For the price I feel the ws is the better system.

I was very interested in it at the start but I think I'll pass on this. Unless I wanted to go around to like friends houses and sharpen their kitchen knives for pocket knives I don't see any major benefit to this over the other Worksharp products that I have like the field sharpener, and for larger things I think I'd get just too frustrated with the magnet situation and/or having the play Twister to find the best way to hold the system in place.
As I said in your Instagram post, it’s so promising yes totally underwhelming. Their field sharpening system is way better.

This type of sharpener is more uncomfortable for me to use as it is more difficult for me to keep the edge perfectly vertical, than to maintain an angle on a sharpener that is horizontal on the table.
Also take into account that, a tree stump isn't the most stable of place to set tha base on. Just saying...
Maybe it’s me but if you put your finger on top it wouldn’t come loose. You need to be smarter then the equipment your working with. It’s like he didn’t want it to pass. I would definitely take the worksharp tabletop over spending hundreds on other sharpening kits unless you plan on doing for a business. I personally use the worksharp field sharpener it goes in my bag an will put a great edge in minutes even in the woods. But I’m a free hand guy.
What about the scandi grind users?
You could use it but I would go with the guided sharpener instead.

Still a lot of guessing work on the angles.
One more thing, you have not levelled this sharpener, which is a major mistake. I don't think the stump is level at any point😄Anyway I’ve just bought it and I’m satisfied with it. I have also Ganzo sharpener but I find that Work Sharp Angle to be easier to use because you don’t have to align the blade to the sharpener in any way other than just hold it vertically straight. Other sharpeners of that same idea that Ganzo uses like Lansky turns out to not hold blade strong enough. Of coarse not all cases. Some blades are impossible to be held due blade shape.

I really stink at sharpening. I could really use one of those but I can never seem to get it right and do more harm than good.
I'm the same way but this system works for me. If you have a really beat up blade, put you hand on top of the tower and you get no rocking. It get my blades. Shaving sharp. I recommend it highly.
