Hi Aaron, and thanks. I have been sharpening for 60+ yrs. My Grandpa taught me- he was a hunter, a fisherman, and a barber [where he used a straight razor daily]. Graduating from the early days of Arkansas stones, carborundum, to diamond, ceramic, etc. I have been so well pleased (and effective) using the Ken Onion system since it came out, but it takes a bit of learning to master the proper usage and quality results. It also takes a few minutes to go through the motions of set-up while using. [note: I had a sharpening kiosk in a major truck stop for years, my son still runs it. Man, them truckers are pure hell on their blades.] This sharpener is so simply convenient, always ready and easy to achieve professional results, without the need to take out a student loan for a degree 🙃🤓. The cost is irrelevant compared to the ease of use and the quality achieved, and the upgrade kit is now only 30 bucks. This tool has now become the foundation in our workshop classes. Our (students) are beginners, bushcrafters, homemakers, etc. , and almost half are professionals in the culinary arts. Hunters, preppers, a couple of butchers........and we also have a separate class for kids. I will add how well these sharpeners hold up with a lot of use, with little maintenance/cleaning. The upgrade kit is a must IMO, and the strop is a big plus. [I am a major fan of stropping, REQUIRED usage when being taught sharpening by my Grandpa, although I personally use a large strap, and a wheel, but we have used inexpensive 3"x8" wooden block mounted strops for years in the classes.] Grandpa simply said "use the strop on the blade......or I will use it on your butt". God bless you. Ozo
Finally ordered mine last night with the upgrade kit. I'll be glad to finally learn how to put on a great edge on a knife. Thanks again for the great review.
I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.
I have the Spyderco Sharpmaker and it's good in maintaining your edges but it definitely can't reprofile. I will definitely pick this up sometime in the future. I've always wanted to learn how to sharpen on a benchstone sharpening system and the guides will be excellent for me since I will be a beginner. As always I enjoyed the review. Keep up the great work, Aaron!
I've watched several demonstrations of this Work Sharp system by members of The Gauntlet, beginning with Chris Tanner of PREPAREDMIND 101, and am impressed. Like so many others my knife sharpening skills leave a lot to be desired and I've no doubt that Work Sharp can be of tremendous help to a person like me. As to the Upgrade that is offered, I'm not sure that it's necessary. What Work Sharp should have done was charge a bit more and include the strop with the main system. The very fine ceramic stone with the Upgrade is unnecessary and the very coarse stone is of some use as demonstrated in this video but, again, not that important. Having said all of that, I think I'll likely be investing in this Work Sharp product. I own both the Lansky and the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker which function adequately but have weaknesses. This was a very good video review, Aaron, which I enjoyed watching.
I've had mine for about 2 weeks now and have used it quite a bit. On "my" knives and on the kitchen knives. I don't have the upgrade kit yet but the stock system is pretty damn good. I'm no expert on sharpening but I don't think it gets any easier then the work sharp. I can get a knife pretty sharp using this and it's almost to simple. I kinda feel like it's going to degrade any skill I had when I was using just a regular wet stone. I'm very pleased I bought it. Great review.
+DamionJR4923 I'm not an expert but I don't see a reason why it couldn't get any type of grind sharp. The plate slightly rotates to keep in contact with the blade.
I found the ramps scratch the finish on the blade, so I tossed mine. They get metal and grit on them and once they do there is no way to not scratch your blade, WorkSharp says cover your knife with painters tape, even that doesn't work
Systems better than the other one at least at all stabilize while you're sharpening your knives very nice design hate Gideon thanks for sharing this video you're awesome dude ✅😉👍🤠🖐️👌😎
I bought the smaller version and keep it with me all the time and love. I will definitely buying this one for my larger and kitchen knives. Thanks for a great review.
Not sure how this is called a Guided system? To me it looks like flat diamond stones in a rocking housing. Guided to me seems like a Wicked edge or edge pro..
+Metal Jackalope That is what I was thinking. The video is great and this sharpener looks good. But I feel more comfortable with a fool proof guided system. I just need more experience.
I wish he would have showed how the guides work. There’s a difference between knowing and teaching. This review is pretty useless imo. He goes way too fast and talks to much. HTF would this review make someone buy this??? What I get out of it is, it’s great for someone who already knows how to sharpen. So the thing he should have stressed was the guide, but he never really showed how that works!
For someone learning you'd want something less expensive something your not worked about ruining ... And 600 or 800 grit is not very fine ... Smith's tri hone for $24 buck is ok but for more experienced people this worksharp could do it... Personally I still use the Smith 320 grit for course medium being 600 and fine being 1000 grit.
Looks to me like a hyped up stone holder & absolutely nothing more. And how any sideways rocking action could possibly be an advantage is beyond me, that alone would actually be a deal breaker. For the price of most of these "gimmicks" , better quality stones could be had. Whatever works for ya I guess. Cheers
I thought this was awesome at first, but that soon wore off. the guides are useless with any blade that has any thickness to it. The only cool thing about it is the tilting platform to prevent you from having to lift up at the end of your stroke, but that wasn't worth $100 to me. I returned it.
If the blade needs some work and you are a beginner, is it better to have a pro sharpen? Or do the guides really help even when treating a neglected knife?
Work Sharp sent me their entire line. I didn’t get the upgrade kit and didn’t touch the sharpener for months playing with the motorized Ken Onion for good while. I love this now I’ve played with it. The upgrade kit is a must but it’s a great pick for less experienced or experienced sharpeners. I love their whole line and bought another Ken Onion Work Sharp Pro for my brother. I use this one for quick touch ups mostly and the pro for reshaping, fixing tips etc. I actually get my knives even sharper with this guided sharpener though. It’s well worth the cost and the upgrade kit for the extra fine and the strop.
Please please. Do try the KME sharpening system. It can be used as a on the go system aswell. The big upside with the KME is that you can set the angles very precisly. F.ex. Esee knifes comes with a 24 degrees factory edge, thats very difficult to do with the GSS if they dont provide other angles than the ones you've showed in the video. But as always nice to hear an honest oppinion. Thumbs up.
just a tip with sharpening, you should really try to avoid running the tip of your knife off the stone, running the tip off the stone will round and blunt the tip. even though with this system the stone rotates im pretty sure itll mess your tip up
thanks for the video I have a quick question if I may I could never hold the right angle when it comes to putting an edge on it and even tho there is a guide I'm worried about staying true to it once it leaves the guide So in my case would I be better off with the Spyderco Tri-Angle as all I have to do is drag the blade down straight? Thank you for any input as I am going to get one of the two but really worried about keep the angle true on the workshop system Once more thanks Paul
I need some help. I’ve had this system for a while now. I’ve managed to sharpen every knife in my kitchen, and my camping knife to hair shaving sharp. But every time I use the strop, it turns out worse than when I started. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong? Any tips or tricks?
Aaron have you used BLOCK SHARPENER by Paul Block ? It's actually 2 Honing Steel Sticks Crossing each other n you run your blade across the centre where the 2 Sticks meet!!! Seems pretty cool as he demos sharpening totally blunt knifes into razor sharpness within minutes!!! Maybe this is meant for maintenance sharpening and not for removing large amounts of steel from your knives ? I dont know ...
Will there be available replacement ceramic plates ? for the portable model they do have but do not are available for sale because is more expensive than buy a new unit.
Such a great video man I know it's older but you have such a good video always coming out with some good stuff thank you for sharing love the education 👍
Thanks for the review, well done! So would you recommend this over the field sharpener? I mean im mainly just going to be using it at home but is the price difference worth it? I guess what im asking is, which does the best job at sharpening? Oh yeah, I do have a few fixed blades but im mainly using it for my pocket folders.
I got the worksharp feild sharpener and the original worksharp belt sharpener I really like their stuff I most likely will get this one as well. I can say the spyderco sharpmaker can reprofile blades just have to work at it more I really like their triangle stones I have dimond and the extra fine stones as well they are well worth it to me. Thanks Aaron for a great video Stay safe stay smart and stay sharp Brother Peace From AxleKlown aka Asher Slade
Those degrees are going to be way off depending on the knife grind. On a ffg if you place that on it you're adding the primary edge grind to the secondary. So if it's ground at 5dps your edge bevel will be 25 instead of 20. Unless you can lay the flat part of your saber grind and go from that then your sharpening will be off. Same happens on any guides system(edge pro, WE, profile) but with those your knife is stationary and you adjust your stone to the right angle.
I have the original small one and I find it works great for an amateur like me but it has different angles do they offer different guides in the 23 deg.
Wicked Edge is awesome in it's own right for what it is and does. But it takes a lot of equipment and a lot of set up time. This product is far more convenient .
Aaron thank you for sharing this video it's an awesome tool and you can also take it down the field it's 100% real and it works my knives are more than razor sharp cuts through paper like butter
Aaron I'm putting this question out to alot of reviewers. Do you think this product in a bug out scenario is an all in one answer to sharpen everything from machetes to hunting knives easily and efficiently. Typhoon season will be in a few months here in the Philippines and we are really and i mean really concerned about a Chinese invasion of the Philippines. Not just my opinion but the opinion of military experts. So I'm deep in what my bug out bag will carry and mostly the easiest way to sharpen my blades.
Take a look at the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener it's basically a small compact field version of this kit and would probably be better in a bug out scenario where weight and size matters.
Thanks for your review, Aaron. This sharpening system looks pretty good for the workbench or kitchen. Others have commented that it might not be great value for money compared to some alternatives, but the biggest problem for me is that it's way too bulky (and, I imagine, heavy) to carry out in the field. (You correctly describe it as "home size.") I'll stick to a Fällkniven DC4 (or if I'm feeling ambitious, a Smith's DCS4) and a leather belt for a strop. And if I need to sharpen serrations, a tiny thing like the Smith's PP1 Pocket Pal should do the trick.
It is not meant to be a field sharpener. And for the price I have not found a system that can do what this can. For compact field sharpener I have used my work sharp field sharpener and love it.
Neversink Outdoors you can actually just take the ceramic attachment to the field as a field sharpener. I wish I thought of that before buying the field sharpener version of this as I tend to just take off the diamond plates to save on weight.
Do you think i should buy the WS feild sharpener for 27$ on amazon or put in the extra money and get this for 55$ plus 34$ for the upgrade kit on amazon?
I would like to use this to sharpen an Ontario Knives SP-10 Marine Raider Bowie. It has a 10" plain edge/flat grind blade with 1095 carbon steel (57-59 HRC). Would this work well for that?
+gideonstactical I've had this sharpening system for a couple of months now, and have to say that I like it a lot.The most challenging thing I have done is to re-profile and sharpen my Ontario SP10 Raider (9.75 inch blade). It took a LOT of work initially, as the edge was in rough shape. Eventually, I was able to get it scary shaving sharp, and was also able to change the obtuse factory edge of 20--25* down to 17*, with a nice convex edge. On the basis of that I would easily recommend the Worksharp SGSS for large blades up to 10" or even a bit longer. However, I did need the upgrade kit to get that knife to that point. Other smaller knives I have such as the Schrade SCH501 (3.2 inch blade, 9Cr18MoV) are very easy to sharpen on the SGSS. Another benefit is that through frequent use of this system I feel I will eventually acquire the skills to sharpen knives with no guides at all--fully manually. So, as long as the diamond plates hold up for a reasonable time (I realize they are replaceable) I would rate this system as excellent.
This is a product that I'll defiantly be picking up, once it becomes more available here in the UK. PLUS, did that blade ever show up???? Just wondering if it got to you ok :) and I'm not 100% if I like the new logo as much as the last one, but I really did like the last logo lol
great review on this, thanks.....( you forgot to add that it also has a section on the ceramic rod attachment that is a groove for sharpening fish hooks ) my go to sharpener for all my kitchen and EDC knives is usually my Wicked Edge, but I did buy one of these to keep at work for quick blade touch ups to keep the edge optimal. ; ( did not get the upgrade kit, but am thinking about it )
14min and 53sec and I still dont know what size your hand are lol! I got the last worksharp manual sharpener in my get home bag evedently its the first gen of this sharpener I know it dont articulate for sure and it was only about 30 or 35 bucks. Now my question is do you think the sharpener in your vid is better or worse than the worksharp sharpeners that you plug in and use to sharpen?
Cant use the guided part if you dont want marks on your blade because they made the guides plastic. Instead of rubber like the others. Mine works well with the upgrades. But will ruin your blades finish.
+Kyezie131 If you pull the point of your blade off of the stone, rather than stopping with the tip on the stone and lifting it, you WILL round over the tip. The tilting feature will help accommodate the steeper angles required to sharpen the belly without increasing the depth of the edge bevel.
+Kyezie131 There is one point in the video where he shows the tip of the anaconda that he sharpened and you can see it starting to round off the tip (the sharpened bevel got wide, almost half moon shaped at the very tip). I don't see how the tilting deal will make anything any better than learning how to move your hand properly on a flat stone, and I feel like the added monkey motion is just asking for an inaccurate bevel (the tilt + any angle that you turn the blade tip to the 'stone' will mess up the angle, so you still need to turn the blade to get this to do it correctly, and then you still can't run the tip off the stone)
Rico Suave Hell, I think my wicked edge went to 800 until I bought upgrade stones. I have the pocket worksharp and it's good kit. Don't know if I'd pay for this one. Even if I didn't have the wicked edge. I had the ken onion worksharp and somehow, I went to use it and the thing was superglued shut. That was wasted money... I bought that to do people's knives since I was being bugged about it all the time. I got tired of using my wicked edge on a gerber with a clapped out edge. I will say, the rocking system seems interesting. 800grit diamond isn't going to give that great of an edge until it breaks in. Even then, I like to go up to 1600 grit as my final grit before strop. I don't really bother with super mirror gimmick edges anymore. I did get a laugh out of 800grit should tell you all you need to know haha. I had a lansky guided system that gave amazing edges and was way less money than this.
Just a update for May 2021: Amazon has the Work Sharp Kit for $49.95 and the upgrade kit for $27.99. So both for les than $74.00 Free shipping for Amazon Prime Members.
The second the knife leaves the slope it's not guided. The knife rocks in your hands, so that's not needed. It's a training tool more than anything else. I have knives with a far greater range of angles too, so it's not great for them ...definitely not for other tools.
Great review man! I'm getting one now so I can really get the last bit of the blade & tip sharp. I just can't get razor sharpness on that portion, even after stropping!
Try chef knives to go website. They sell 10 angle guides ranging from 10 to 20 degrees on one degree increments. And its pretty cheap too......under $7. They have videos on youtube as well. Check it out. I like this guided sharpener....especially the rocking feature on it.. I probably end up buying this sharpener as well. The thing is, you can use different stones on this setup as well. Check out the Edge Pro stones...they are 1"x 6"x1/4" thick, which is almost the same size as these. The Atoma diamond plates are probably the best to go with this setup.
Still can't decide if this is really good or just gimmicky. Although not the best system, the lansky does a decent job for around $25. This one for $60-$100 hmm.
800 grit "super fine"...? For an axe maybe. Definitely not for a knife. It must be leaving a pretty bad edge. I use wetstones and finish on 8k grit. Then strop on sth like 10-12k. Razor sharp and doesn't get dull after cutting a slice of bread.

Still use this?
LOVE my WSK&T home belt system.
So this or the field sharp system is your take-along?
I dig my DMT stones but this is a pretty good system. Absolutely needs the upgraded stones and strop to make it work imo.
+Dan H On another note.. the strop on the upgrade system has another upgraded guide to strop at 25 degrees. I don't know that I agree with that.

Aaron, another great review!! BTW, congrats on breaking the 30k barrier!!
Thank you so much!
Great quality video, this product or the Work sharp onion elite system for Swords, specially Long swords?
how does it compare to the other work sharp field sharpener you did a review on a while back?

Enjoyed the video. Question: What do you think on the Work Sharp Knife and Tool belt sharpener? I have a fused hand and have difficulty with a stone.
Get the ken onion edition. Better options and ability to get the grind you want.
better then the spyderco sharpmaker? what about the wicked edge?

Looking for thelinks
For stropping i believe you should use the 22 degree ramp..
Can I buy it in Russua?
This sharpening system is very good...
How do you "eyeball" 17 degrees vs say 20 degrees? Seems like a lot of room for error. I doubt people are that exact.
You keep a steady hand and balance not difficult lol my blades are far better now because I know what am doing hardly room for error 🤷♂️

I'll stick to a Fällkniven DC4 (or if I'm feeling ambitious, a Smith's DCS4) and a leather belt for a strop.
Start with the field sharpener and then upgrade as needed.
+gideonstactical Alright, thanks man. Just bought one. Cant wait to get it.
This or the spyderco sharpmaker? I can’t device. Thanks.
This one has more capabilities.
Would you say this might work with the Junglas and other blades about it's size?
Yes it can do the larger blade!
How well does it sharpen a recurve?
I've been using theienfield sharpening system and I love it. This looks like a beefed up version. Nice.
The field version and this one are awesome!
I would like to use this to sharpen an Ontario Knives SP-10 Marine Raider Bowie. It has a 10" plain edge/flat grind blade with 1095 carbon steel (57-59 HRC). Would this work well for that?
DiGiTaLdAzEDM It sure would.
I did get the S1, thank you so much my friend. I picked it up last night. Really am looking forward to it!
gideonstactical great :) It's just the tracking wasn't giving me any info. so I just thought I'd ask lol :) have fun Bro lol
great review on this, thanks.....( you forgot to add that it also has a section on the ceramic rod attachment that is a groove for sharpening fish hooks ) my go to sharpener for all my kitchen and EDC knives is usually my Wicked Edge, but I did buy one of these to keep at work for quick blade touch ups to keep the edge optimal. ; ( did not get the upgrade kit, but am thinking about it )
Do you still use this sharpening system?
Mask your blade sides if you use the angle guides. They state this in the instructions; it would be nice if the reviews mentioned it too.
I like it because it does not run off of power.
How does it compare to the Lansky sharpening system ?
I used to use the lansky, this is better by far.
+gideonstactical thanks a lot.
And how does it compare to the work sharp guided field sharpener ?
have the rubber guides on your field sharpener worn much?
+Taylor Milton Nope, still running strong.
sweet, i picked one up recently and was just wondering. i like alot so far
Cant use the guided part if you dont want marks on your blade because they made the guides plastic. Instead of rubber like the others. Mine works well with the upgrades. But will ruin your blades finish.
So with the little tilt system thing even though you are rolling your blade off the end it wont dull/round it at all?
The fact that the top fine grit it comes with is 800 grit tells you everything my man!
Love that sharpener!!
Digging the TOPS knife.
This anaconda is sweet, but you need to have XL size hands
Just a update for May 2021: Amazon has the Work Sharp Kit for $49.95 and the upgrade kit for $27.99. So both for les than $74.00 Free shipping for Amazon Prime Members.
This is amazing! Thanks for this video, and good recommendation!!)
What country is it manufactured in?
will you be reviewing the A.D.D. tactical bracelet strop. I've been wanting to pick one up and saw you wearing one
its now june 2016- Aaron do you still use the gss or are you shatoening with something else?
still rock it every time.
was supposed to be sharpening!
thanks for the reply! love the channel! if u left the spyderco for the gss i guess i'm sold!
Finally picked one up. Looking forward to getting proficient with it.
Hey, which Leatherman is this? Thanks!
The OHT
Will dis work with combat troodon with m390
Do you still use this?
Nice system. Being a beginner I wish they would put in some but different angle guides.
Any update on this? I'm looking at this or the spyderco
+- Elliott I have had both. I sold my spyderco and use this all the time.
+gideonstactical the thing I keep commimg back to on the spyderco is the super fine rods... think it makes any diffrence?
I been sharpening for 50 years or more , but them angles come in helpful when you get older. LoL..
Still can't decide if this is really good or just gimmicky. Although not the best system, the lansky does a decent job for around $25. This one for $60-$100 hmm.
I paid under $50 for one of the basic kits at Bass Pro shop Yesterday,
Damn I just bought the spyderco sharpmaker. If I dont like I send it back and try this one. It seems you get a lot more for your money.
Keep the Spydie!
got one coming 👍
You are a great and entertaining reviewer
Thank you so much, really appreciate.
Lol you know what? I dont even know why I asked that haha Im going with this model. Thanks again for the review!
and plus you could take it out in the field
No protective box?
This is a commercial.... not a review by any means...
...and next week we will be reviewing the Shake Weight!
They really need to just include the upgrade kit with the system and increase the price. It's silly selling everything in pieces like this.
You are awesome I love your videos
I bought it. Didn't like it. Took off the diamond stones and stuffed them in a bag and I like them now lol
You talk too much rather than show how to use.
Thank you UA-cam for the ability to watch this @2X speed
Sold! 👍🏻💯
you can screw it down, under the guides there is a hole on each end
Awesome new logo!
Thanks I am really happy with it.
800 grit "super fine"...? For an axe maybe. Definitely not for a knife. It must be leaving a pretty bad edge. I use wetstones and finish on 8k grit. Then strop on sth like 10-12k. Razor sharp and doesn't get dull after cutting a slice of bread.
Why didn't you show us how it works?
Thanks for the info....was at Bass Pro today...saw it but didn't get it...oh well...
shouldn't pull the tip off the stone it will eventually round it off
hey buddy why don't you test the damn thing and then try to sell it to us.
Good review.
Wait... Your name is not Gideon?
Read the about section of his channel. His name is Aaron
