For Ryan Newman's wreck, I think what saved him was when NASCAR made the Gen 6, they moved the driver 6 inches to the right inside the car. Whoever came up with that idea deserves some sort of award. If that crash happened with the COT or (most certainly) the Gen 4, Newman is no longer with us.
Jerry Nadeau also admitted that before his Richmond crash (on the Dale Jr. Download), he removed some padding for the headrest on his seat. Hate to say it but that was a big mistake that almost killed him.

Honestly, you should make a series of the worst (non-fatal) crash from each year for each decade of NASCAR.

    (1970-1979)

A correction, the Newman bar you mentioned was already in place at the time of his accident. Newman came up with the design after the 2009 Talladega race when he flipped and landed on top of Kevin Harvick. NASCAR eventually implemented the bar after Kurt Busch landed on Newman at Talladega in 2013

Bobby Allison's crash in '87 at Talladega was a bad one. Friend of mine still has the scars from that wreck sitting in the 5th row close to Harold Kinder, the flag man. So was Richard Petty's at Daytona in the tri-oval. Geoff Bodine's truck crash at Daytona the first year for the trucks series was perhaps the worst crash of all time. I went to Talladega 19 years in a row, both races, and can write a book on all the nasty crashes I've seen there. We sat in the Anniston and Birmingham towers. Neil Bonnett's crash in the Mom and Pop's 31 car was scary. I didn't breathe until I saw Neil climb out of his car. Then 7 months later he gets killed testing Hoosier tires at Daytona. Neil should've never been in that car after his Pocono and Talladega bad wrecks. I really miss Neil Bonnett. Great guy. (BTW, great video and commentary!)

Wreck #8: I was a huge Newman fan right from his freshman year on and was pretty adamant about it too. When this wreck happened it was rumored on social media that he had died. My son knew how much of a fan I was and cried when he heard that. He was heartbroken for me and for Newman. Newman recovered but for me and my son things just weren’t the same after that. Rules and regulations were pushing us away from the sport but that incident was the final push. Newman retired and we both stopped following.

Also I was at Pocono right on the fence for Davey's crash. Though I had def seen a man die right in front of my eyes at a very young age. My brother was a huge Davey fan and was crying. Was very scary to watch.

Young Man, you did an excellent job with this video! I don't remember all of these violent crashes, but I do, for sure, remember a good many of them. Are you planning on doing a video of the ten most violent fatal crashes? Just curious. I've seen some of those, too. The results, in a good many cases, were absolutely gut-wrenching, I can tell you that. Russell Phillips, from October, 1995, and Don McTavish, from 1968, were two of the most gruesome wrecks, known to NASCAR. If you haven't seen the footage from either wreck, you'll definitely need a very strong stomach, in order not to throw up all over the place, if you do watch them... especially the Russell Phillips crash.
Anyway: I'm a new subscriber, and I must say that I enjoyed...or, at the very least, endured these violent, but thankfully, non-fatal crashes. Jerry Nadeau was so blessed to have survived his accident. Definitely!

Now that you have made videos on brutal crashes in both NASCAR & Indycar, F1 should be the next one you should make. There are a few that can make the list such as Mika Hakkinen at Adelaide in 1995, Andrea De Cesaris at the Red Bull Ring in 1985, Romain Grosjean at Bahrain in 2020, Senna at Mexico in 1991, Martin Brundle at Melbourne in 1996, Luciano Burti at Hockenheim in 2001, Mark Webber at Valencia in 2010, Mark Webber at Interlagos in 2003, Kamui Kobayashi at Melbourne in 2012 & Fernando Alonso at Melbourne in 2017.

Hi Chris. I would love to but I'm not sure if I can make it happen and I'll be 100% honest as to why. Even though my content falls under fair use, F1 doesn't seem to care. The two F1 videos I have, they are taking all my ad revenue. This is not a big deal as I'm not in a position to do this full time anyway, but that is the lowest form of punishment I can get for making F1 content. They could possibly black my video in specific regions or all together. It just doesn't seem worth it to put time and effort into something that people might not be able to watch. Never say never though, I may give it a shot once again. I just have to be very selective with the footage that is used. The last thing I want to do though is sacrifice quality because of this, so we'll see what happens.

One crash i remember was one Richard Petty had back around the mid or late 80s. The front end went up on top of the wall and the rear stayed on the track. The car started rolling over amd over. When the car finally stopped, the cab was all that was left. No front. No rear. No engine. No wheels. The middle was all that was left. Everything else was literally gone.

Did anyone see the Xfinity race from Daytona that happened two weeks ago? I went to Daytona to go see the race, and the wreck on the finale lap LITERALLY WAS THE MOVIE CARS!!! There were three cars in the lead, and they had to determine who was in the lead when the caution came out. It was crazy, but after like five minutes, they gave the win to the 21 car, I don’t remember his name, I’m not really familiar with the Xfinity drivers, I’m more familiar with the Cup Series drivers.

Random fact about me: I was born May 2nd 2009, and according do my mom, after I was born, she was watching that weekend’s NASCAR race, and when they mentioned that it was Kyle Busch’s birthday, my mom was like “Oh crap, my daughter was born on Kyle Busch’s birthday.” Everytime I tell people this, their next question is “Who’s your favorite driver?” And I say “Kyle Busch, look it would be weird to have the same birthday as a NASCAR driver and not have him as your favorite driver, plus, he’s like the underdog, and I support underdogs, I am actually kinda an underdog myself.” If your asking how I found this stuff out, I don’t remember, but I think I was five maybe when I found out. Also, I have a nickname for Kyle, I call him my “Birthday Buddy” since we were both born on May 2nd.

I would not exactly say Kyle Busch is an underdog, he is a Cup champion with over 50 wins. But I hope you enjoyed watching him win last week! He is definitely a very skilled driver.

After each accident or fatality or even while Nascar is testing out new safety features, these accidents are absolutely brutal. You go back to the 70's and there was no HANS, no safety bar down the center of the windshield, no catch fences ,no safer barriers just concrete and grass and you can bet there were numerous fatalities in those days. Even today there are accidents in Nascar but there are accidents but they've improved safety for the drivers giving them much better odds of walking away, so to speak from these crazy wrecks because they're going almost 200 miles an hour and when they cut lose the driver hangs on for dear life but survives to race another day. The car can be replaced the driver can't.

I swear, in the 90s, if there was a big wreck at a Superspeedway; Mark Martin was usually in a bad spot and part of it. I don't remember him causing them, but he took many a wild ride because of them.

Derrick Cope at a Busch race at Richmond, I think 2002 or thereabouts. His throttle hung going into turn 1 and he hit the wall so hard the body separated from the A-pillar of the cage, which I've NEVER seen happen before outside of a superspeedway rollover. Outside of the two gate wrecks at Bristol (Mike Harmon and Michael Waltrip) it's the worst short-track wreck I've ever seen.
Also, I can't remember the guy's name, Danny something? A Goody's Dash series wreck around 2000 or just before, he hit the wall at Daytona and barrel-rolled down the front stretch much like Richard Petty in 1988. When he stopped, every single body panel was gone from the car, he was sitting, on his side, in the middle of the track in the middle of nothing but a rollcage with no wheels and barely an engine. He crawled out under his own power and was not seriously injured. Freaking miracle.

Regarding crash #10 (Earnhardt/Marlin/Irvan, Talladega 1996) and Earnhardt's approach angle to the wall (almost directly head-on), it doesn't seem to make medical sense that Earnhardt survived that one only to be killed in a much more benign-looking 55° angled impact at Daytona. Usually it's the head-on ones that kill drivers, not the angled ones.

In regards to Earnhardt's 1996 crash, people seem to have largely forgotten, and it wasn't mentioned here, that Ernie Irvan was visually impaired out of his left eye following his near fatal crash at Michigan in 1994. This is what caused the crash. He pulled down on the flat in the tri-oval which turned his car upwards into Marlin. Irvan had no peripheral vision in his left eye and as I remember, he was seeing double out of his left eye as well. If you're a fan from that time period, you already know Ernie Irvan was already one of the most dangerous drivers of the 1980's-1990's era of NASCAR and this was before his accident. To this day, it has never been justified as to why NASCAR allowed him to come back after the 94 accident.

The worst crash I ever saw isn’t on here because I don’t think it was filmed. I was sitting in the stands for practice at Michigan in turn 2 in 1994. Ernie Irvin comes into the turn, inexplicably loses control, and goes completely headfirst into the concrete wall. None of us thought he was alive. And the surgeon crawling into his car didn’t seem too frantic, even though he was in the process of saving Ernie’s life.
