When I was young and my dad was alive he would scream at me and would grab the gun away from me and not tell me what I was doing wrong. I almost relive those days. Props to you.👍

Your son now knows the real meaning of sweat equity and that's a good lesson to learn. I did this same work on my first car when I was 15 and that was lucky for me. JD wins for sure.
Killer job guys. I've painted many trucks, boats, boat trailers and vintage travel trailers with Rustoleum and Valspar with hardener. If you take the time and effort to cut and buff you will be rewarded with mirror like finish.Again great father and son project.
The VoTech school in my district did the paint & body work on my 1960 F-100. I had to help sand & prime for 4 Saturdays while the students worked all week. We painted it with Krylon rattle cans. The instructor invented a handle that clipped on the cans. Damn near the same as shooting with a pro gun. We clear coated, but as hard of paint as yours. Cannot kill tractor paint. 25 years & my pickup still looks good though. White on top & ford blue on the bottom & white interior.

To be honest when I see you working on something on here with the cigarette hanging out of your mouth it just cracks me up 🤣. Reminds me of my dad. Good times with your son. That will hit a soft spot for him looking back when he's older.
Nice thing about classic cars is that they don't need perfect paint. The body has character and style. Modern cars have little of both so need to have perfect shiny paint to be appealing. The kid is doing great!
I think the wheels that are on look great. However, I was going to suggest some old cragar 5 spokes (or knock offs), but the Goat already has those. I'm really not sure of any other style wheel that would look right on that car. Maybe some black steelies with chrome beauty rings and chrome baby moon hub caps. Paint the black the same color blue or white to match the car. Honestly, probably white since the bottom is already blue.
JD is getting the hang of that painting! Won't be long, and he won't need the old man around to paint! I see a father/son shop, mechanical and paint! Love this car!
I am lovin this series with your son, you are correct "this is hot-rodding" and letting him get in and work for it is the best thing you could have done for him. wow that paint job looks awesome your patience with JD and letting him learn from doing it trial and error is outstanding, he's going to roll up to school and have the most coolest car going big block 59 got to love it.
My hat is off to you for passing along the hot rod tradition to your son. As that paint cures, especially if you leave it in the sun as much as possible, the patina and those wheels are going to be cool. I wouldn't change it.
I'd have given anything growing up to have father/son type moments like this. Great job teaching and letting him make rookie mistakes without hurting his feelings. He lays down paint better than some adults I know. Great job teaching J.D. And also the work on the car is beautiful. Thanks for making it real world too instead of a garage most can only dream of. This inspires me to get moving on my 57 Chevy.
Love what you are doing and you are doing a terrific job teaching JD - people’s voices tend to go up an octave when paint starts flying, but you are very patient with him. My recommendations for rolling stock: Low Buck- gloss black steelies with baby Moons and turn the white letters black wall out. High Buck - chrome reverse (spiders optional) with a set of one inch whitewalls. The paint colors says “early ‘60’s” to me and both those wheel tire combos were in vogue then.
