I've used the Garmin pacing function on my watch twice during a race, but they were trail races. I was way too busy looking at the trails and had no time to check my watch while running. Also, predictor (fitness-based predictor, not my pacing strategy predictor) said I would finish the race in 1:45:00 - but obviously it had no idea of how rough and messed up the trails were, so I finished in 2:22:00 instead :-))

I’ve used it twice. Hit PB each time. Of course i knew the pace that I wanted but it helped to remove mental calculation when doing a race or going for PB.

The pace pro was not very accurate. I finished almost to minutes slower than my watch predicted. In the end I ran 300m more (on my watch). Even with the race screen where you can reset the time based on km marks my time was not completely corrected

Since starting running in January and building up to 10km’s, the Pace Pro has definitely helped. First 10Km was 59.56 and Saturday’s PB using the pace pro plan was frustratingly close to a sub 50min at 50.29. A very good way to see how the training is paying off. The increments work well in maintaining or getting a move on to stay on pace.

I was introduced to pace pro later on. I was already fairly experienced with 5k time at sub 20 and 10k at 41 mins. Pace pro did nothing at all for me. I was much better off focusing on how I feel. I think it's good for when you're starting out but as soon as you have some experience it'll become redundant.

Great video. Love Pace pro, helped me get my PB in 10k under 56 min and my 5k under 26 min. Garmin gives you this depressing beep when your not hitting your paces which motivates more

I've played with my Garmin a little and likely will never follow through with a race program. I like to see all my runs planned out though out the training period. I'm old school and go by my heart rate. I know from running hard what HR I can sustain for the duration of a race and just try and hold that and the time is what it is.

@@mattrybacki189 At the end of the training, my watch claimed that I could run a 21:5* (something). So I went all out, pushed so hard that I nearly threw up during my attempt and got ****23:31****- a 5 second PB. Not what Garmin claimed I could run, but a PB is a PB and I’ll take it. 😃
I have just followed the Garmin half marathon training plan….The race race didn’t go well for that one, as I finished 10mins slower than my target and 8mins slower than my PB. The Garmin half marathon training with Greg, didn’t have anywhere near enough long distance runs at target pace and so I feel it did not prepare me for it well enough.

I did the New Forest 10k last year and, while I didn't blow down any trees, it gave me enough confidence to enter for the marathon this year.
It was way too tough for an inexperienced old man whose six years of running experience has not included many miles off-road. I sort of washed up a the finish rather ran over it.
Now for the good news: I was first in the 70+ age category -- of two!. Now for the bad news: I've been granted free entry for next year.
Talking of the finish: that long straight approach track must be around three-hundred meters! Not too bad at the end of a steady 10k, horrific after a dodgy 42.2k. My heart went out the James.
By the way: well done James!

So proud of James. Amazing job!! I find him to be so inspirational and watching him conquer things outside his comfort zone inspires me to do the same. He was the one who inspired me to start adding ultras to my bucket list. That being said, everyone gives Andy such a hard time and he is such an inspiration himself- not so much because of his race paces but because of his ability and willingness to translate his pro knowledge to the average runner in a way that is helpful, inspiring and not condescending. I love listening to his insights on the podcast and appreciate his presence so much in the trc videos.

Well done to James for his 10K attempt, I think going through a training block and seeing progress is achievement enough in its own sense. I know it makes sense to have the 10K race being in an actual race, but it would have been also nice to see (or maybe a follow up) to see how James does on the exact same route he did for his baseline, he'd still be able to show off the PacePro and show how you don't need a race environment/crowd/competition to get a new PB.... just a thought (maybe I should work for Garmin and TRC's PR dept!)

Used pace pro once, summer '22, for a 10k that turned out to be an utter scorcher. Trying to stick to the plan was incredibly hard and I missed the target by a few mins - I did go faster than I would have just running to feel.
James did incredibly well - knocking over a minute off the time trial is significant in just 6 weeks given the conditions on the day - picking an all-road autumn/spring 10k would likely see much more favourable conditions!

Great job on the run and love the video series. Garmin training plans vs personalized plans...they are very different but an objective study...not sure how you would do that or ever been done. I'm learning that running faster means running slower, for longer, 80/20 training is real, zone 2 is legit, understand threshold, get better shoes, understand fueling, mileage matters, avoid injury by being measured, and much more. That's what garmin can't replicate but a coach can (BTW, I love my garmin)

Congratulations! I am shooting for a PB in a 10k in one week and though I only need to get below 57 by 2 secons, yesterday's cross country 5k race slightly damped my optimism while improving my Garmin's expectations. Sadly, Garmin will be my pacer and not Andy. Truth is that it was a very rolling cross-country yesterday with one very steep slope and I was not too far behind my goal, so maybe it's not too bad. However, while I did put in a lot of base training, harder sessions usually got cancelled by Garmin in view of my tennis training and matches. Tennis appears to interfere a lot with the daily running suggestions by Garmin. I will try another program or build one by hand for next year's race season. The very good news: yesterday's cross was my very first race at 52 (not counting a few parkruns) and despite the cold, humidity, wind and terrain: I loved it!

I’ve only recently replaced my old Garmin to one with PacePro, and I haven’t had chance to try the feature yet, so I may be wrong but I’ve seen that the Connect IQ data field ‘Race Screen’ lets you correct GPS errors and realign the watch to the measured distance markers by pressing the lap button. Perhaps it also gets PacePro back on track. Race Screen only affects pacing rather than recorded distance, I think. It’s a shame Garmin doesn’t have an inbuilt feature for this.

Just tried PacePro yesterday on a 10K run ahead of a HM and had the same issue. They should really only feed the splits and then go off of measured distance, rather than trying to compare to the course map, which of course is going to be slightly off. My solution was to switch to my usual screen where I have lap pace. Then when PacePro lapped, it would show the new split and I would target that. Annoying. But I did hit a new PB!

Well done James (And Andy too for being a great photographer and supporter). I would love PacePro on my watch I think it would really help. I don't think my watch has it though 😢.
I've been working really hard the past few weeks to try for my PPPPB (Post Pandemic Parkrun PB) this Saturday at Troon Parkrun. In September I decided that for one year I would stop registering for races longer than 10k so that concentrate on getting an overall Parkrun PB and to also for the first time get under 60 minutes for 10k. 🤞🤞🤞

Just ran one last Sunday, was trying for something in the 54 region as that was what Garmin thought I could do. Ended up with a 55:05 which was a 3 minute PB.
Happy with it because it was 27 degrees, had heaps of slower runners in I had to weave around at the start and had a few hills in it so 54 is definitely possible. Garmin daily training for the win.

I’ve read that elite and top runners tend to run at a higher cadence, even when at a slower pace. Is this sth that is worth working on for a recreational runner to run faster? I’m usually running at a cadence of 160; i find it tires me out more when i try to increase it to the “supposed” ideal of 180

I once used PacePro in order to pace myself to what I hoped was a new 10 mile PB of 90 minutes. With a mile to go I was off by about 30 seconds, but pretty content that I would be putting in a decent time. It wasn’t until I finished the race that I realised I had programmed my watch wrong - I had accidentally set it for 87 minutes instead on 90, meaning that I ended up smashing my PB by a few minutes. I was a lot more careful the next time I used it!
