We're back for part with with more mysteries, behind the scenes tea, and wild stories in the Drag Race Iceberg! There have been a lot of strange, secretive, behind the scenes tea about Drag Race throughout the years. And thanks to reddit user u/myhatrules it has all been compiled into this fun iceberg! Like other iceberg videos all over UA-cam, I'll be breaking down (almost) every entry on this iceberg and telling you all the weird, wild, and camp stories behind some of the most hidden moments in Drag Race lore.
In this video, we'll go over tiers 1-4, and in part 2 coming soon, we'll dive even deeper into the mystery, covering even weirder, wilder entries. I want to be clear that nothing in this video can be 1000% confirmed, and no ill intent is directed at any queen, producer, or RuPaul herself. This is just a fun little mystery I'm trying to solve.

I think I heard in a interview from Shea that the season 9 top four queens were also asked to provide a reveal for the lip sync smack down, Shea just didn’t because she was having designer/wardrobe troubles. Apparently they were only told about the smack down like a week and a half before filming it and Shea couldn’t get a reveal look in time
The smack down timing is true. IIRC peppermint said they were given a list of songs very last-minute and she couldn't get her outfits together in time (her Stronger reveal was held together by pins hence why she wasn't moving around a lot until the reveal). She was actually filmed being eliminated at final 4 but told later backstage that they were possibly gonna try something new, so keep in touch.
In Joseph Shepherd's interview with Peppermint he revealed that the clip of him and the audience 'reacting' to Sasha's rose petal reveal was actually the audience reacting to Peppermint's reveal but they used it for Sasha's instead.
i think the acutal main reason that shea didnt have reveals is because they got stolen. i think someone from season 9 accidently spilled that because shea was supposed to have like 3 reveals but i think the outfits were stolen.
I thought Shea didn’t have reveals because she was dealing with multiple deaths in the family at that time and didn’t have the time or mental space to deal with getting a reveal together
I think the interview You mentioned was Hey Qween, because I recall her saying her outfits didn't show Up on time. Also her dealing with the loss of her father didn't help either

The Queens should have always voted for Miss Congeniality. The purpose of the award is to have the competitors spotlight one person they found to be a charming and kind person. Glad it got hacked, so they could get it to the true meaning of the award.

The thing is, before S9, the queens that people voted for actually made sense. Yes they were fan favorites but they were also congenial and deserved the title. Valentina, as iconic as she is, did not.
Hell yes. Though as a fan I wish there was also a fan favorite vote (at least for the non-finalist contestants) because I love engaging but we all know the top four twitter polls never mean shit :p

-chad michaels didn't know they were filming each queen winning, so she thought she actually won
-shea tripped on sasha's rose petals

-they refilmed mimi picking up india bc they didn't get a good angle the first time
-alexis' military boyfriend was fake
-peppermint was filmed being eliminated on season 9 and there was a top 3 instead

-one of the cast member from little women la accidentally leaked the top 6 of season 8 on instagram
-they filmed jackie beating crystal in their lipsync and making top 4

Minor correction on alyssa's full critique: they only showed Carson's full critique and it was of ep 3's future of drag runway. There's a moment when carson tells alyssa "this is fashion to me". Phiphi, when tweeting about how the show is edited to favour certain queens, claimed Carson originally said that to Detox.
So WOW uploaded a bonus clip of his entire critique to Alyssa, showing he did say "this is fashion to me" to her.
I remember vividly bc it was so interesting seeing a full critique, Carson even talked about a grafitti reference that Alyssa's look reminded him about. Also bc I've never seen WOW be publicly petty lmao

One of the 'scripted' moments in Drag Race which the queens did themselves to make a moment was in All Stars 4 when Trinity and Gia go off about who will play Caitlyn Jenner in Snatch Game. They had talked about it off set and Gia had already decided to change her character but she suggested they have a 'confrontation' about it so they have more story. Which I don't mind since it's the queens themselves deciding on it. The moment is 'fake' whilst still being 'real'.

My favorite fun fact happens in season 3 episode 1 where it shows audition tapes. In some of the episode, you see future drag race contestants like Alaska, Katya, Thorgi, Nina West, Kasha Davis (I think is one, I dont remember) and more!

They will be happy and praise you, and give all the attention that you need to go through the day, and you won't need to be on UA-cam comments talking clueless shit to people you don't know and is unable to show the slightest bit of respect.
It's pretty easy to use brain cells, allow me to show you: RuPaul's Drag Race have been having live finales recorded for the last 11 regular seasons, and Drag Race Thailand had both their finals also recorded live. From all those 12 finales, the only one we have any tea about a double crowning being taped is the season 6 one (as season 15s finale didn't happened yet, we can't say anything yet). So, it's not rocket science, you don't need to ask the Tarot and don't need to be present to make 1+1 and understand Bianca and Adore Double Crowning was the only one ACTUALLY filmed for an actual option to the show.
I hope this clarify and helps you to understand my comment. And as I said, message your friends and go out with them, it's good for you. I've done that today and it was amazing, we had Japanese food and ice cream and gave each other very tight hugs to say goodbye. Do it, it's good.

Lol the Phi Phi critique video reminds me of when a production member went to one of Shangela's shows after AS3 airing to tell her that some things will come to light soon, so keep an eye out (because at this time many of the jury queens had cone to Shangela to console her and say that they had no idea about the outcome because they definitely voted for her.) Then the the jury voting video gets posted on UA-cam where only Thorgy voted for her. Lol production can be so shady sometimes.

I feel like the “Trinity fucked a producer to get to the finale” is actually quite similar to what happened to Pearl. A producer forced himself onto both of them and made it very clear that they wouldn’t have a future in the competition if they refused him. I have a feeling that Pearl has confirmed this or it was the topic of a YT video…

Not only was Raja a legend in the LA drag scene, she was also the lead make up artist on America’s Next Top Model. That’s why Raven appeared on Cycle 8 as one of the drag queen models. Also I believe Tyra and Ru were/are(?) friends.
it’s also like a good couple of the early girls were doing big in the la scene because the show didn’t have that big of a reach yet. queens like morgan, delta, and mayhem were close with girls like raja and raven and probably also worked with ru before the show
Actually Shangela said in her ”exposed” -interview with Joseph Shepherd that she sent an audition tape in on season 3 but when she was approached by the production and they asked her to return she found out that the production had not even started to go through the audition tapes meaning that when they asked Shangela to return they didn’t know that she had sent another audition tape.
some things i think could be included in another iceberg:
- katya's claims she actually did way worse in her roar lipsync on season 7 than the edit showed. according to her she messed up a lot of the lyrics but they cut that out to favour a fan favorite, although its not clear how much of this is true or just katya's anxiety speaking
- the old man sleeping during bianca's stand up was staged,, he supposedly appeared on a later makeover challenge
- all stars 7 did have negative critiques on the first episodes, but supposedly they stopped giving them after raja had a fight with michelle claiming she has no qualification to judge them
I can't speak to whether the sleeping moment was staged, but the guy wasn't on the same season. He had already been on drag race in season 5 and was paired with Jinkx in the makeover challenge (the "I killed Judy Garland" guy)
Omg I would love a Drag Race Juniors. Like clueless people trying to do make up and sew and be fierce. My no drag knowledge would totally enjoy that
For the hormones thing, I'm pretty sure it was Kylie Sonique Love and Gia Gunn who had to stop hormones to be on the show, but after Gia made a stink about it and about rupaul's transphobia, they started allowing trans queens to continue hormones.
I think Peppermint also delayed getting hormones until after her run on the show ?

I've read this rumours:
Tatianna & Jessica's lip sync was heavily edited to benefit Tati.
Absolut Vodka wanted Roxxxy to win, but production not so they crowned Jinkx instead and that's why Absolut didn't collaborate with the show afterwards.
BBC is the one who chooses the winner of UK, not production.
The BBC one makes sense with how they have regular presenters that do a few shows, the probably wanted to pick the winner to ensure they could use them later a là Lilly Savage and then later Paul O Grady

as someone who followed adore pre drag race theres more to that one...note it says season FIVE...so she applied and got the most votes by far that year but they didn't cast her (went with penny instead) then they brought her for season 6
I think Violet explained the crown story in one of her podcast episodes with Gotmik
Gigi didn't rent a studio btw she lives across from haus of Avalon and they moved all of the furniture out of her dinning room and set up a seamless backdrop and helped her film. That why she wasn't disqualified. They made her prove she actually was in her home. And it was proven she didn't cheat by production. she just had access too more studio equipment then the average girl would have.
Some things to note:
- Gigi was never actually threatened with disqualification, people just say she should be disqualified based on that black and white number
- Jasmine wasn’t unaware of what shangela was doing, shangela actually paused production multiple times because of how long she was taking and that’s when jasmine left
Another fun fact that was missed. Jasmine was so serious about leaving that she took her makeup off but production convinced her to stay hence the bag on her face the entire second day 💀
Also Shangie was late the first two days of filming and that combined with her pausing production so many times is what pissed Jasmine off so much (the level of unprofessionalism….) Shangie has reasons for being late (day 1 being jet lag because her flight got in late, I don’t remember about day 2)
And people also called Gigi being unable to win the crown due to her lack of political engagement and tone deaf tweet about not being able to breathe...
Rupaul did have that weird coffee enema outburst in cycle 13. That kind of screamed drug induced episode to me.

Other things that "may be" added here:
1. Queens stole things from set (Manila stole a sewing kit
2. Yuhua's "past feud" with Fashion Photo Ruview (tho it's obvious why she changed her show's name)
3. Yuhua is one of the first queens to post their "unaired" look (She posted it every week on her youtube channel)
4. Manila's "Imelda Marcos" was funnnier than what was aired. They cut off when the pile of shoes become higher and higher.
5. Every US presidential election has a corresponding drag race election themed challenge.

Well technically April Carrion was the first to consistently post her unaired looks and Kim Chi was the queen to make photoshoots with your looks popular. By Season 9 a large amount of girls were consistently posting what they would've worn and even more so for Season 10 (probably because the bigger VH1 platform gave more of an incentive) so really Yuhua was just following an already existing trend and shouldn't really be credited with any part of it.
I always think about how it's so wild Adore and Bianca could have been double crowned. Really wouldve been interesting.

I love Adore but season 6 belongs to Bianca, one of the most deserving winners of all time
about the drag race germany point: we actually got a show named "queen of drags" which definitely got some aspects of drag race (e.g. a design challenge with trash, an acting challenge) but also had a lot of differences (e.g. everyone had to do a lipsync performance instead of a runway and a bottom two lipsync). But still, you could say that it might have something to do with the cancellation of a drag race germany. It could be that queen of drags was made after the actual drag race was canceled and therefore inspired by it or that it was canceled because queen of drag was already made. And this might also be the reason why the queens that competed in queen of drags are told that they won't be cast in the version of drag race germany which was announced in 2022. But these are just my own assumptions, I don't know anything for a fact, but if someone does I would be interested to hear.
I didn’t know the QoD queens won’t be cast, is that due to their contracts maybe? Because it seems like a dumb idea to me not to cast queens who might already have a following + TV experience
@@mxmox I only know that the reason was that they already had their time to shine so to say. But as you said it kind of was dumb to do so and therefore I would believe that it is either due to some contract or due to some other issues regarding production companies and so on
For AS2 phi phi / Alyssa judging drama, it wasn't AS2 Episode 4, it was Episode 3 (the baddest bitches in Herstory challenge), specifically the "future of drag" runway.
Phi Phi said at a Roscoe's viewing party that guest Jeremy's Scott's comment: "I'm going to come out of the closet and call it fashion" was about Detox's runway, not Alyssa's.
So the RPDR producers released the unedited critique of Alyssa, which proved Phi Phi was misremembering at best, intentionally dishonest at worst because that comment WAS directed towards Alyssa's silver future of drag look.
That's part of the reason there's been this war between WOW presents and Phi Phi ever since (even though Jaremi seems like a good person IRL).

Well, even in Mexico, when S1 was aired in 2010 by VH1, it was presented as a parody of Project Runway and ANTM, so the seamstress theory make sense. And yeah, the replacements for AS1 were TB and MiMi.
Probably this is just a Mandela effect, or something my mind created back then, BUT, I remember the show was presented as "Locura Real", translated as Real Madness or Royal Madness, and yep, it was presented as this parody show with drag queens. Ok, so for Mexican TV, even for cable Mexican TV this was something nuts, so they just aired S1 & S2 the same year and cut the show from the programming. I hope some other Mexican fans remember this.
Actually, Logo came to Ru and asked her if she wanted to do a day in the life kind of show with Ru or a competition, Ru quickly turned down the competition and they apparently filmed 1 episode of the day in the life show, and Ru quickly said she’d rather do the competition, but i no doubt think queens like Jackie convinced her to do the show
Full Alyssa critiques: so you’re close but slightly wrong. Phi Phi actually made that claim about the Future of Drag runway they did in episode 3. Specifically, she said positive critiques that were shown for Alyssa had actually been directed towards Detox. So that’s when they released the full critiques.
And what a gag it was when they released the full thing
with Ru and Raja, I don't believe the entire production was rigged in her favor, but Ru wanted Raja to win. If you look on Ru's old web blog you can find multiple posts of him going out and seeing her and Delta and Chad perform, and one time Ru even threw together some drag in the venue and got on stage with them for a Cher tribute that was happening that night.
I think what is good to note, its likely production knows who they want in the top and while it’s not fully rigged to having this person go home then or this person be the weeks winner or what not there is some set level of knowing who gets where. As harsh as it is there is clearly a “fodder” group in each season for easier eps where you know they are going to be the first to go because they need people who won’t last and they clearly will have people for later eps. Raja was likely destined to be in the top 3 by production, and it was hidden bias from Ru and others on set that set the win in place.

Kandy ho was allegedly Edited out due to her conspiracies with other Puerto Rican queens to send one of the only/ best audition tapes since the show allegedly only considered one per season at the time. The found out and punished her
The season five fan vote was allegedly rigged with adore having the most votes by a long shot(I voted for adore) until they made the votes invisible. All of a sudden penny tration won the season 5 vote and adore got on season 6
22:56 - That's kind of what Call Me Mother is about if you think about it - young up and coming drag performers being "adopted" into houses by "Mothers". I'm actually glad WOW didn't get into that, because I find CMM so refreshing and *not* engineered or scripted the way all the RPDR series are.
The thing about the planned elimination and return of trixie… was supposed to be because at the lipsync trixie was obviously the winner but RuPaul didnt want to get rid of Pearl for being a cute boy. So she decided to keep pearl but then planned this return for trixie cuz Ru also had a lot of faith on her, but then it would look to obvious. So they changed it yo a whole challenge where allegedly everyone had a chance to comeback but trixie was the plan the whole time
Which is crazy, cause Pearl and Trixie clearly won the makeover, and like how do you even rig a design challenge (other than getting rid of makeup like with Joslyn)

I've seen speculation that Trixie had an inappropriate snatch game character (Anne Frank I think, might be wrong) and they eliminated her and brought her back to avoid having her on snatch game

I really love your videos, thanks! One thing i've always wondered about is when queens enter the werkroom on the first episode, see someone they know and start jumping around in surprise. Are they not supposed to tell anybody they're going to be on? or is that an act
i think i've seen it said that none of the contestants know who is competing so their reactions are genuine, so i'm assuming maybe the queens are only allowed to tell family or something??
The girls are definitely fed lines. When they are doing their makeup the producers are under the table telling them what questions or talking points the queens should ask the other girls. This information given to me through the grapevine of someone who knows Elliott and she told them.

Art said on Abbie Chatfields podcast that they lost the footage from her elimination and they had to bring Coco back to refilm it after she had been eliminated and Art had been brought back

ok so i know a lot of ppl are correcting you on the art/coco lipsync but the reason why they had to do it 4 times:
1st time: first lsfyl, coco wins
2nd time: lost footage so need to redo lipsync
3rd time: redo lipsync because they wanted more energy from coco to match her original performance
4th time: same reason as before but they needed even more energy
source is either a joseph shepard or drag tea w matt interview i cant remember which but its on here. tbh it makes it understandable why they brought art back, she already had a series with wow at the time so she had a good relationship with them so they probably wanted to make it up to her after making her lip sync 4 times knowing she was going home 3 of these times. oh and btw there was a gap between the first and second lipsync, they had to get into drag suuper early she said because they had to film this part before any of the next episode. so yeah lol thats why they did it 4 times

I think the question if drag race’s scripted I think it’s both yes and no. I speculate that producers do choose the queen they see no being good to keep around long enough due to likability to producers and no usage to storylines or ratings among social media and fans but the ones that are strong contestants maybe they let it run a couple rounds on their own luck and merits and then they take a decision who would win. I’m excited to think later in years when and if drag race stops we’ll hear the juicy and so deep secrets of this show as we now know of ANTM WITH TYRA BANKS.

There is a script, but they have to rewrite as they film because what they assume will happen usually changes. Although there are a few seasons that went pretty closely to what producers expected by their research and knowledge of the cast beforehand.
I've heard that RuPaul was inspired by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival on Spain to do Drag Race, since she was there a year before S1 was filmed.

I have read that in S6 production filmed 3 crownings, but none of them included Courtney.
Bianca actually talked about this, I think on a recent Pit Stop episode. It was one for each of them, then a double crowning
Courtney has spoken about it many times, including in her book. They filmed all crownings, then fourth one with Bianca and Adore. And then everyone thought they would just film doubles with Courtney as well - but that never happened. Which actually affected Courtney a lot and was definitely a total dick move on production side.

Willam has talked about it as well. Matthew was getting help and according to Willam Ru was still paying for that. So even though there was a fallout, there's still love there.

The Art vs Coco always seems so bizarre to me because apparently they had them refilm it a different day. So they had everyone in set get back in drag, brought back the guest judge and made sure everything look the same to film the lip sync again?!?! I really don't understand how it worked

I just looked up Ru Paul's Drag Race Green Screen Christmas on UA-cam, songs from it are on Drag Races official UA-cam page, and it's just Ru, some queens seasons 1-6 and Michelle visage singing and dancing in front of a green screen. It aired 13th December 2015, I have no idea if there was a connecting story between these songs, I'm gonna have to look it up online further

Fun Fact: There wasn‘t a Drag Race Germany, but instead a Show called ˋQueen of Drag´ with Heidi Klum, Bill Kaulitz (Singer from the Band Tokio Hotel) and Conchita Wurst as judges. It was pretty wild but sadly got canceled After just one season. Sadly, you only had to look good and be able to dance, which made it a bit boring at times
