    HOW IS THE DRILL STEERED? ANSWER: Near the end of the drill is an electronic device that emits radio signals, informing the operator and other people on the surface about the location of the end of the drill. The end of the drill is cut at a sharp angle, like a chisel. The electronic device near the end of the drill tells the operator in which direction this sloped face of the drill is pointing. If the drill is rotated as it is pushed through the soil, then the drill moves in a straight line. However, if the drill is NOT rotated as it is pushed through the soil, then the soil pushes against the sloped face of the drill and causes the end of the drill to move in the direction which is OPPOSITE to the direction in which the sloped face is pointing. So if the sloped face of the drill is pointing downwards, then the drill moves upwards. If the sloped face is pointing to the right, then the drill moves left. Etc.

      Thanks for the answer. The guy who titled the video told us why. I have always wondered how.

    HOW IT WORKS, it uses water to spin and drill through the ground, then when ready to go up the operator sets the drill tip (bit) to a certain angle which makes it resurface, next the cable lines or pipes that will be placed in the hole are locked to the tip and the machines pulls the drill back out through where it came from and bring the now attached pipes with it, once the drill is out, the the pipes are detached and the drill’s job is done.

    HOW IS THE DRILL STEERED? ANSWER: The section of pipe near the end of the drill contains an electronic device that emits radio signals, telling the operator and other people on the surface where the end of the drill is located. The end of the drill is sloped or "beveled" (cut at a sharp angle, like a chisel). When the drill is rotated as it is pushed through the soil, then the drill cuts in a straight line. When the drill is NOT rotated as it is pushed through the soil, then the soil presses against the sloped face of the drill, pushing the drill in the direction which is OPPOSITE to the sloped face of the drill. So if the sloped face of the drill is facing down, then the drill will move upward. If the sloped face is pointing to the right, then the drill will move left. Etc. The electronic device near the end of the drill tells the operator in which direction the sloped face of the drill is pointing, so he can guide it through the soil in whatever direction that he wants the drill to go.

    How the drill is adjusted to go horizontally but not deeper into the ground ?

    "And that's how it works"... 2:39 and absolutely avoided the only question any of us uninitiated ever have, HOW DO THEY STEER THE BIT? Saying in the comment section that there is a 30° thingamajig on the end with a sonde is absolutely NO help at all. Thank you for wasting everyone's time;-)

    I wish that MY town would use this technology. Our roads are a mess. They excavate trenches to remove old water and sewer pipes, lay replacement pipes, then fill the trenches. The disturbed soil settles, creating ruts, bumps, potholes, ... so the roads are almost impassable -- not only while the pipes are being replaced, but even after the road has been paved again.

    5' to 6' thats deep as hell what are you guys putting in? Water sewer?

    • @Ranaldo20
      @Ranaldo20 7 років тому +2

      It all depends on existing utilities. If there is a lot at 4', it's easier to go deeper if you can.

      Makes it way harder for the next guy if you're burying stuff at 5'. Keep it at 36" and thread the needle between everything. Especially if it's just a small duct for a secondary or single phase primary. I've went deep before when putting in 6", 8" 12" PE pipe when needed but always try to install like I'll need to locate it in the future.

    • @rocsvt1

      rajesh krishnan drill head has a bit on front at about 30 degrees it also has a sonde inside it which a locator tracks to steer it where ever he wants
