    I can totally relate to everything you said about your van. Even though my T3 has broken down a couple of times and it has given me quite some grieve in the past two years, I absolutely LOVE being on the road with it. There is nothing like discovering the world in a T3 in my opinion :)

    Cant beat a T3. Iconic and well liked. Even though i now have a new ducato based van, i cant bring myself to part with my 'Bulli'. (partly because i spent so much restoring it!). Hi guys , nice Videos :-)
    we drove around 7500km in 2 and a half weeks this year in my 85 T3 Westfalia without any problems. For the future I can really recommend you to make an engine swap from diesel to gasoline GTI-Engine (2E,ADY or AGG). The swap is really easy as the diesel engine has the same motorblock. I did it 2 years ago and I´m very very happy, it is much more quiet, much faster and in sum simply more modern and makes much less problems compared to the diesel engine (I had breakdowns every summer and finally had been sick of it).
    If you´d like to have some more informations just write me. Until then keep on doing what you do, amazing pictures!

    Hey Simon, regarding the aux battery charge, consider buying and install a POWER SERVICE.
    It increases the amps the alternator send to the aux battery and will charge it in a sensibly shorter time.
    I have installed a 25ah model and it really is a game changer. With just one hour of driving I almost have my aux batteries (2 x 120ah) 100% full.
    My compliments for the quality of these videos. Keep up the great work. :)

    Nice Travel video and nice t3
    We travel with our high top bay window every summer for couple of weeks with our family of 3.
    We traveled 60000km since we bought the vw 9 years ago.
    We do not take spare parts or toolbox (other than swissarmyknife and a small leatherman).
    Our mantra is
    1. Make the checks before starting the travel and adhere to the preventive maintenance schedule also while traveling.
    2. Don’t overheat (as it’s an air cooled we installed a oil temp sensor to make sure)
    3. There are very few damages that prevent you from driving to the next garage of your choice, on your own power.
    4. If you need a jump start... you need the jump starter cable... you will always find someone willing to help with their battery... as long as you know how to connect.
    5. Often best memories are made if travel takes unexpected turns.
    So far we had to go off itinerary looking for a garage only twice while traveling. Both times we made great memories.
    We installed two solar panels two years ago and we purchased a shower tent and pressure shower... best purchases ever... we ve be been enjoying our travels completely without the campgrounds since.
    To more great memories made on the road.
    Safe travels.

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Sounds like a well thought out strategy. Our problem was that we spent all the time between buying the van and heading out on the road, fixing the interior from scratch. So sadly the mechanical things got less priority. We paid the price later, but we’ll get it right next time :)
      I’m also all about taking unexpected turns and that makes it all much more fun and interesting. We would really love to get some solar panels. Looking into it before our next long trip.

    In my T3 I installed a Planar 2D and a 200 W solar system with a 100 Ah AGM battery. That's enough for a compressor fridge and to charge all the stuff. The secondary battery is under the driver seat, with room for more 100 Ah under the passenger seat. The Planar heater is great and the installation is very easy. If you don't want to put it inside, you can even put it in a box under the van.

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  4 роки тому

      Lovely, that sounds like a solid setup. Do you have a recommendation for the solar panel system? The ones I have found seem waaay to expensive, especially considering the amounts of sun we have in Norway! I would love to use the space under the front seats, currently its nothing there.

    I'd recommend getting a Planar 2kW diesel heater. Mostly because it is really sold in Europe and thus easier to get consumer protection. Although the user interface is just as bad as with Eber/Webasto. Also, the 2kW is more than enough to heat a T3 since our full-size Transit stays warm enough in 0 degree temperatures. Although we also have a lot less in windows. Love seeing an old T3 with round headlights, it's the car I learned how to drive in way back when...

    What an absolute delight to watch your adventures (even though I'm late to the party it seems). Two questions from someone looking to go on a similar journey but in Canada, which means longer drives between destinations. Did you only shower every 3-4 days at camp sites or had a daily "refreshing" routine too using small amounts of water? What about... well... toilet needs? Restrooms along the way I figure?

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Stephane :) Yeah, you're right. Taking a dip in a lake every now and then or using facilities at camp sites along the way. Petrol stations sometimes offer shower facilities and is our go to place for toilet visits. Also, grab a quick coffee at a cafe and use the restroom, everything is doable.

    You've probably heard of most of these, but Vanagon.org has a lot of good tips and a small store. Van Cafe and GoWesty are probably the two biggest vendors over here in the USA. Campervanculture.com is a bigger vendor in the UK. Seems like you guys have better access to parts in Europe, so maybe the Vanagon / T3 specific vendors aren't quite as important over there.
