I never knew cats could have downs
They can´t, due to the fact that they have no chromosome 21 (humans with Downs have an extra pair of chromosom 21), they can have genetic disorders or illnesses that causes them to be slow learners, or have unusual looks and behavior compared to other cats. So it´s not Downs, but people sometimes call it that, as a comparison, to make people understand.
I had one
his other health problems as he grew older became such a problem we had to put him down
Me either. It’s interesting
i know tigers can. tigers that are badly inbred, especially white tigers. white pigmentation makes it harder for tigers to hunt, so white tigers in the wild normally starve (mind you, if a wild white siberian tiger made it far enough north to live in the cold they might have a better advantage.) but a lot of exotic animal breeding outfits in the usa don't have responsible breeding practices in tigers. The proper response is to introduce as diverse a blood as possible into the breeding line every few litters in said line. you don't do that you get tigers, including white tigers with down syndrome.
All mammals have the same range of possible diseases and potential genetic conditions :
it's just a matter of rate and proportion.

We picked up a kitten with an intellectual disability at the animal shelter (only because we had chosen his sister and couldn’t leave him there by himself). We were told he wouldn’t last long. He lived 13 years and was the sweetest cat. He didn’t know how to rub up against us so he would just put his forehead on an arm or leg. He never growled or hissed once. Definitely would adopt another one.
That sounds so sweet

Had a cat with downs, his name was George but I affectionately called him "The Doge" years before the meme dog.
He had a tendency to lick random things, the floor, the furniture, your face if you stuck it close enough.
He was such a sweet kitty, but was tragically lost in a house fire in 2013.
Holy shit. Our deepest condolences. Had someone else gotten injured in that fire?
Holy hell, a house fire!?! What a truly awful way to go. Very sorry for your loss.

Baby is ever so slightly ... special. That's okay.
But infinitely beautiful.
just get him fixed so it doesn't keep spreading
@@sinephase down syndrome is almost never genetically inherited, it's caused by a mistake in cell division. It also isn't "spreadable" in any way. Even if it was, there isn't anything wrong with having down syndrome.
It is also not curable or fixable.
@@izzysavage4634 You obviously get your info mostly from people trying to guilt you into changing your position on the issue, but I'm only partially incorrect.
"Translocation Down syndrome can be passed from parent to child. However, only about 3 to 4 percent of children with Down syndrome have translocation and only some of them inherited it from one of their parents."
"Having had one child with Down syndrome. Parents who have one child with Down syndrome and parents who have a translocation themselves are at an increased risk of having another child with Down syndrome. A genetic counselor can help parents assess the risk of having a second child with Down syndrome."
Nothing wrong with it? Yeah, OK bud:
Heart defects. About half the children with Down syndrome are born with some type of congenital heart defect. These heart problems can be life-threatening and may require surgery in early infancy.
Gastrointestinal (GI) defects. GI abnormalities occur in some children with Down syndrome and may include abnormalities of the intestines, esophagus, trachea and anus. The risk of developing digestive problems, such as GI blockage, heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux) or celiac disease, may be increased.
Immune disorders. Because of abnormalities in their immune systems, people with Down syndrome are at increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders, some forms of cancer, and infectious diseases, such as pneumonia.
Sleep apnea. Because of soft tissue and skeletal changes that lead to the obstruction of their airways, children and adults with Down syndrome are at greater risk of obstructive sleep apnea.
Obesity. People with Down syndrome have a greater tendency to be obese compared with the general population.
Spinal problems. Some people with Down syndrome may have a misalignment of the top two vertebrae in the neck (atlantoaxial instability). This condition puts them at risk of serious injury to the spinal cord from overextension of the neck.
Leukemia. Young children with Down syndrome have an increased risk of leukemia.
Dementia. People with Down syndrome have a greatly increased risk of dementia - signs and symptoms may begin around age 50. Having Down syndrome also increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Other problems. Down syndrome may also be associated with other health conditions, including endocrine problems, dental problems, seizures, ear infections, and hearing and vision problems.
@@sinephase I found the article you are referring to, and in the first point you made, the sentence directly above it says "Most of the time, Down syndrome isn't inherited. It's caused by a mistake in cell division during early development of the fetus." I also have not been "guilt tripped to change my position." I have always been taught to be a loving and accepting person, and to judge people based off their personalities and never off of anything they cannot control.
Obviously its preferable if someone did not have to suffer through those medical causes you listed, but down syndrome is characterized by the mental aspect of it, and there's nothing wrong with having a brain that processes things at a different rate. People with down syndrome are only at a higher chance of getting the medical issues, but every single person is different when it comes to genetics and many people with down syndrome do not get any medical issues, or only get a few. Most of these medical issues can be cured. Many people of many different races or other groups are also more likely to get medical conditions, so using your logic, we should "fix Hispanic people" because Hispanic people are more likely to get diabetes or liver problems. most minorities also are more likely to get higher levels of stress or depression so instead of giving better medical access, we should "fix them".
But the mental aspect has no cure, and it does not need to be fixed. Society is the one that needs to be fixed, and we should accept people regardless of how they were born. We have to learn to understand people different than us and have open hearts.
I had a neighbor who had a cat who was born blind and "slow",but she loved him. As she said, "He doesn't know he was born blind and slow. He can't miss anything he never knew." She had him for many years. Happy cat.

Holy crap. This is exactly like a kitten I had when I was a teenager. His name was Sidewinder. (His mom was Tumbleweed.) He was the biggest sweetie on the planet, but he seemed to have no startle reflex. He had a derpy walk. I fell in love with him and we ended up keeping him. He seemed to grow up fine, but he was a slow kitty. He didn't seem to get upset by much. We did know that something was off with him, but he was such a love bug that we just accepted that this is the way he was. He was a bit wall-eyed and his eyes were a little wide set anyway, so that just added to the derpy look.
Odd thing was, he was also a seal point like this little fella.
So, I was today years old when I found out that one of my favorite childhood kitties had Downs Syndrome. Mind blowing.
aww, that's a cute name for a cat!
He's a bit derped but still adorable, and WILL NOT STOP ME FROM PETTING THE FLOOF
I suspect one of my cats (a rescue) has slight Feline Downs. He is definitely slower to learn things than my other cats and doesn't look quite normal. He is, however, the most affectionate and loving cat I've ever had and he purrs nearly all the time.
as long as he has a good quality of life it's all okay
@@dgelderman He has a good quality of life and is very much loved.
Me too. His name is Teense; he was so small. He had to be bottle fed because he just couldn't seem to get the hang of nursing. As he grew, it was obvious his face is a bit different, as well his legs. He's not too bright, but is the best kitty. Never gets upset, always goes with the flow. And what a cuddle bug.
Thank you so much for being a great human and rescuing cats and giving them that love and affection that they all deserve😻
@@marias.9472 They give back unconditional love. One of my cats was surrendered by a nasty owner. She was only an 8 month old kitten. She was very ill, skin and bone, could barely walk because we think she'd been kept confined in a cat carrier for long periods of time. She had a bad dose of cat 'flu, was in a lot of pain (we think she'd been thrown against a wall) and although she never tried to scratch or bite would hiss and growl whenever we walked past her or went near. She also wasn't spayed. She had many trips to the vet and, of course, as soon as the vet gave her a clean bill of health, she was spayed. 2 years later she is a beautiful, friendly and mischievous cat who sleeps by my side every night as does Tigger (the one with slight Feline Downs). I have 10 cats, 8 are rescues and I love every single one of them - and I know without the shadow of a doubt that they love me too.
I love how he explains that cats can be differently abled like people. He explained that the little guy was just a little slower than his littermates but you could see that he was a little lovebug just waiting for the right family. 😺🥰
One of mine was, a beautiful chocolate point Siamese named Leroy. He mostly depended on me or his father, a Seal Point named Si to do his thinking for him. Once I worked with Leroy, you couldn't even tell he was a little bit slow. He'd jump in my lap when I watched my favorite TV shows, liked to drink iced tea, and grunted when he ate; you could tell he couldn't get enough of a good thing. He got chubby but lost that baby fat around the time of his first birthday
Just use the word disabled. “Differently abled” is just ridiculous.

I know this is going to sound really weird, but I'm fairly certain I have a young little chicken who has some sort of mental challenge. If Down syndrome is caused by having 3 copies of chromosome 21, and humans have 23 pairs, how can a cat with 19 pairs have it? I assume it's not the same as humans, but is there a third chromosome in cats? Is this a real condition?
It’s not _actually_ called Down syndrome for cats (because that’s a human condition), but it has similar behaviors to it so therefore, it gained that nickname.

Thank you for this! We adopted a stray last year as four-month-old kitten, and we've noticed that her head is unusual in shape (and it is ADORABLE, actually) and she is developmentally significantly slower than other cats I've had. She faces some unique issues, and I'm about to take her in to get her vision and hearing checked. Our vet has never mentioned anything, but she fits these signs, so this really was perfect timing for me to see this. Now I know what questions to ask and hopefully will find ways to help her sweet little self adapt better.
I have a Siamese cross cat that has this. Perfectly normal other than being very kittenish at 8 years old and being that dad was a coon cat he is HUGE! so when he decides he wants a cuddle or climb into bednot much you can say except okay lols. We love him to death . Another weird quirk he is very rigid on times , he has to go to bed with dad at 9.30 and is very vocal to the point of literal roaring until dad goes to bed. Everyone has to be out of bed by 6.30 a.m or it starts again. Vitamins and treats every night 6 p.m and absolutely no deviation is allowed but we dont mind. My only regret is the vet knew but didnt tell us till he was four and we were taking him to the vet repeatedly when he was younger worried something was wrong. Not that we cared but it would have helped knowing the why and my husband wouldn't have stressed so much something was wrong. He's a healthy, happy cat very spoilt and very much adored and we wouldn't be without him
Mandee Morris Can tell you love him a lot and that's all that matters. Bless him and bless you and husband. Can't understand why the vet knew but didn't tell you.

Poor little sweetheart, I hope he feels well and is happy. He’s a beautiful little kitten ❤️🥰
I had a dog with downs as a teenager. Sweetest dog our family ever owned.
Just like cats dont get feline downs, dogs don't get Canine Down Syndrome.
You couldn't have. Down syndrome is an extra copy of the 21st chromosome in humans. Humans have 23 sets of chromosomes. Dogs have 38 pair, so even if they had an extra copy of their 21st it would affect them completely differently than it would a human. The perceived "down syndrome" features in animals is usually caused by inbreeding, but can be from other birth defects. Down Syndrome is not caused by inbreeding.
I think they meant that it had disabilities that are similar to Down syndrome, like how the video presents the car as having it despite cats not being able to get it (but also having their own disability/disabilities)

This is precious. And I learned something.
I had a stray black longhair who was raised by Bobcats (we saw him with them from the time he was a tiny furball!) in the desert here in SoCal.
He grew and left the Bobcat family, only now he would break into our house and spray, run, spray, run... and then escape. It was hilarious. He was UNCATCHABLE!!!!! lol... I FINALLY caught him one day, outside, put him in a crate for a day, fed him... he hated it. Snarled at everyone. Hissed. He was not happy.
After that day in the crate, I let him have the empty pool room... and attempted to gradually socialize with him.
He growled, spat, ran around trying to escape...literally climbing walls. It didn't improve!!
Three days later, I tried petting him as he was finally eating. He bit my hand really hard!
I instantly grabbed him by the scruff, and held him to my face, and actually nose to nose with me, his eyes dilated completely. I shouted "NO!" and continued to hold him there until he BLINKED.
I put him down, he looked up at me and then went back to his food. I stayed right there, as he ate.
Once he was just about done, I reached down to pet him again.
This time, he accepted that, and actually raised his tail with the strokes.
When he was done, he came to where I was sitting cross legged.. and climbed into my lap and purred. Let me pet him, handle him, check him out for injuries.. and was now completely compliant.
After that ONE moment... he became my best friend. I had him fixed and checked out... he was 100%.
He never left my side. He was a muscular, large guy... and dominated our property!
I'd go running, and he was always there beside me, panting horribly (so I started running earlier before the heat).
He would see dogs in the distance, and go after them to protect me.
One of the best cats I've ever had in my entire life. I miss him.

So yes cats can have other genetic diseases that cause symptoms that would be called downs. Calm down and educate yourself!
@@mellie4174 down syndrome is known as Trisomy 21. Not trisomy. Trisomy is a broad term for a duplication of any of the chromosomes. Down syndrome specifically is characterised as 3 copies of the 21st chromosome only. If the duplication occurs in any of the other chromosomes regardless of species, it would not be down syndrome nor could it be classed as such. There are other trisomys such as 18 and 13, but they would not be considered linked to down syndrome. Because without the extra 21st chromosome present, it's simply irrelevant. And yes he acknowledged how it "was once called down syndrome" meaning it no longer is and this cat does not have down syndrome. I'm not meaning to sound like I'm attacking anyone. Simply here as a mom of a child with T21 and wanted to help spread some knowledge on the condition.
I would cuddles it even longer and harder. Every meow.... my heart...😭😭😭😍😍😍
No matter what this kitty has, its just pure life and beautiful. God bless this little cutie♥♥
That baby is the cutest thing I've seen all day MUST HOLD THE BEHBEH.
for me, all animals are perfect.
Except for humans
@@gitadasgupta7488 Yeah, humans suck.
Well isn’t he marvelous, an extra special kitten is perfection really, just like the human variety!
You do realize down syndrome is a genetic DEFECT right?
@@ToyDirigible you do realize that blue eyes that are more sensitive to light and more easily damaged are a genetic DEFECT right? You do realize increased risk of melanoma due to lack of melanin in the skin is a genetic DEFECT right? You do realize that malaria resistance through sickle cell anemia is a genetic DEFECT right? Point is, why don't you stop being an ass and stop acting like you know the inherit value of any living creature just by its DNA. If you've taken any intro biology course you would know that nature doesn't give a shit whether something is good or bad, only if it increases fitness, so sure downs syndrome is a genetic "defect" but only because of your perspective that it lowers the individuals fitness rather than increase it. And at that point, who fucking cares. Any normal humane person would understand that genetic diversity is important for a population and any organisms with down syndrome are just as equal as any other individual in their population. Stop acting like you're better; you're just a shit person like the rest of us. At least most people with downs syndrome seem to be less selfish and more empathetic than the rest of us.
@@mohnjilligan3830 sorry my mistake. Re-engineering my perfect super organism to have down syndrome now. Thanks for the advice friend!
@@mohnjilligan3830 the guy points out a fact and you call him selfish and less empathetic than most? you’re really comparing blue eyes and Down syndrome and thinking they’re equal? Okay then
Yikes
He's still precious. Please take good care of him! 🐈💞
i'm just dying of cuteness, i missed seeing kittens
"My kitten's name is Downy."
"Why?"
"Well-"
MEEWWWWW
I DIDNT KNOW CATS CAN HAVE DOWN SYNDROME 😍😍😍😍😍
CATS CANNOT HAVE DOWN'S SYNDROME. They do not have a 21st chromosome. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE!
@@ShawtgunHobo but in the video thare is a kitten with dowm sindrome
@@ShawtgunHobo they could have less chromosomes then other cats? Might have to put this on r/storiesaboutkevin dude
@@ShawtgunHobo it might not be actual down syndrome but they can still exhibit similar symptoms of down syndrome
You think cats with mental disorders is cute?
I had a cat like that, sadly had to give him up to a home with more experience taking care of animals with problems
Her cuteness is making me melt. 😭❤
How interesting. Earlier today, I saw a video of a cat somewhere in Japan where I thought there's something wrong with this fella. He wasn't Siamese. A black cat with some white patches. He had the eyes as described in the video (but without tilting the head upwards) and his walk was kinda wobbly. I scrolled down the Japanese comments until I found an English one where the poster was thankful the cat was rescued by someone who didn't think of the cute factor and knew the medical aspect of taking care of a dwarf cat. I thought the cat was old but turned out to be still a young one (born in August 2019). His coat wasn't clean so he probably can't or doesn't lick himself.
thanks
I think he is a Birman, notice the white paws.
I have a cat that is about 10 yrs old. I've said since I got her as a kitten that if there were such a thing as down syndrome in kitties that I felt she was. This is the first time I've ever heard a vet talk about this. I love my Saffron to pieces. She has always been in a world all her own , and I love her for it . 🌞
Saffron, what a cool name. Best wishes from Cumbria England.
He's so precious!!!
I have a cat like that. When she was a kitten we eyes were crossed and she looked so goofy. She’s still pretty slow when it comes to understanding things but she really is adorable ❤️
So interesting!! I'm not sure if it's the same, but my family and I have a combination of 4 kittys (all adopted) and our oldest boy Smokey, who was the runt of his litter, is noticeably slower at processing information and learning compared to the other cats. He doesn't realize he can jump over the little pet gate we have like the others, he often will cry if he's lonely (as oppose to the other cats who will search for a family member if they want attention), and he will regularly stop and "buffer" before doing something. He's a little different but thankfully he's completely healthy and happy💕💕 and by far the most loving and cuddly cat I've ever met 🥺💕
I mean, cats technically can't have Down's Syndrome specifically. You can't have Trisomy '21', when you only have 19 chromosomes.
Other genetics disorders can kind of mimic the symptoms though.
Actually they do it’s the same
There still missing chromosomes that would not normally be there your assumption that it’s just mimicking it is asinine as you can go ahead and look at any vet medical textbook and find out that a down syndrome animals is a very real thing, think before you open your mouth.
Learn something new every day. Thanks doc!
"Have you noticed anything unusual about this little kitten?" Yes, it's the cutest thing in the whole world, sir
>Human has Down
I see it
>Kitty cat has it too
W-where?
Slower to learn just means once they learn it takes longer to forget. 😎👍 Don't overlook dogs and cats with disabilities, they can be quite hardcore loyalists and have abilities humans tend to overlook. It's so sad so many come with health issues along with learning issues. 😥
CATS CANNOT HAVE DOWN'S SYNDROME. They do not have a 21st chromosome. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE! Down's Syndrome is not defined whether your eyes are pointing a certain direction or not. If so, all humans with a tropia would have Down's Syndrome!
@@ShawtgunHobo Aren't you quick to respond without first reading the comment carefully. Where did I say Down Syndrome in the original comment? 🤔Where did I say Down Syndrome? I said disabilities, not down syndrome. This cat has disabilities. 😑🥺
Sorry my comment "triggered" you so much as to ignore the details of the comment and attack people. 🤣🙄
I couldn't love this little guy more!! Precious!
breaks my heart to hear him crying! give him to mama!
it wouldn't matter to me..... i'd love it that much more
He is precious! 💕
Hope he leads a long and happy life - what a little beauty!
Omg. So precious. I’m sorry he has a disability. I hope his life can still be full. Precious baby.
