They nailed pretty much every aspect of what makes a Souls game, they also released a game that was polished without bugs and well optimised and the fact that this game from a dev that like...nobody had heard of AND it was there second game? Incredibly excited to see what Round 8 can do in the future
It's not as if there's zero bugs at all; There are a couple that can sprout up from time to time. However, given the scope of the project compared to how obscure Round 8 are, that's by no means a black mark: If anything, it's actually kind of impressive the game is THAT polished.
@dragonbornexpress5650 yeah, I defintely didn't encounter anything in my playthrough, it's a little grim of the times that a game that works as it should without any major hitches gets such high praise for doing so when it should be the standard, but I think its more impressive given this unknown studio pulled it off
To be honest, I found most of the records that you play in the gramophone to be insufferably 1-dimensional cheesy C-band commercial feely fake music for a game... I honestly had trouble making myself listen through whole songs, but forced myself to do it to gain my Pinocchio's "humanity". But maybe it's because I'm a french speaker and music snob. Even with that being said, the game is 100% masterpiece, I just finished it a couple hours ago and I loved it !
@@Lutinpofinbare in mind that the music in Lies Of P was probably made by a small, no-name band in Korea that wasn't expensive!.....You know when you watch an anime that takes place in a retro-futuristic setting, and the characters act all noir and mysterious? You wouldn't say: oh that's fake pretentious noir acting! Of course not! You'd accept it as an anime thing. Corny but cool. It's how Japanese people see western tropes and render them in their own funky way! We accept that and find it charming and even so cool, like in Cowboy Bebop!....The same logic applies to the music in Lies Of P!
Story is easy to follow, yet you don't get the whole picture unless you read lore materials within the game in the form of news articles, books, letters, and talking to npc etc. For example: you fight a semi conscious carcass in the cave. For some players, it would just have been weird mini boss that spoke right before it died. But if you been reading up on lore, you can understand he was Medoro, dear friend of Alidor(real one), and the journalist who tried to tell the truth about the alchemists.
My personal game of the Year 2023. I did have 0 issues with framerate, no glitches, no sudden frozen screens, flawless and continuous gameplay. Many games these days feel to me "unfinished" and then get patched and patched... after leeching money from customer. The music, the controls, the scenarios, level designs, weapons, endings, replayability, spooky, dark and lovely at the same time. Enemy variety, and so on... Minor complaints and I had a blast at the end. Bought it for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC, same as Elden Ring. My hype was fulfilled with this game for me. ❤
After I finish the game I did something I rarely do, I started another run. That game was a blast, the combination of aesthetics, level design, boss fights, weapons and my god, the music. Fantastic game.
One thing I loved about this game is I never felt the need to grind, I explored every nook and cranny and I never felt I was underleveled, and it was still difficult
@@zeroskaterz92in Dark Souls games you don't have to follow the same path if you don't want to. You can choose which places you want to go. As you say none of them are open world like Elden Ring but instead of the set recommended path, you can go to a different area first. Go straight to blighttown if you'd like. Or maybe darkroot garden. Or the catacombs if you're crazy (or really good at the game). Lies of P puts you on a set path. Doesn't bother me but I wouldn't be surprised if they gave more options in a sequel.
@@zeroskaterz92 Ive played them all. none of them are linear. In demons soluls you can literally go to whatever world you want from pretty much the start, in Dark Souls you can go down to a high level area at the begining of the game. Think before you speak please.
This game was absolutely amazing for me... I like, feel disappointed, that it wasn't worldwide news how amazing this game is and that Round8 pulled off the impossible.
This is my personal GOTY. Completed the game 3 times with 77 hr and LV 305 for context. This was such a satisfying game from start to finish. I can't wait to see what's next for the DLC and this fantastic fantasy universe they are creating.
Finished my first run at somewhere around level 90. Now im on laxasia on ng+ and I've got over 100 more levels put in just clearing normally without farming. It's wild how much ergo and ergo items you get
@@johndodo2062 LV 7 P Organ unlock is God tier. The Real Boy ending was so sad to see. This game was able to have me so invested. You just don't get that too often with games anymore
it's a real shame that people might not even consider this as a GOTY nominee just because of the fact that it's a "clone". it's a really good game that stands up on its own and deserves all the good reviews it's getting. it's a GOTY contender for me. yes, it's that good
It's a great game, that for sure, but for this year a goty nomination for lies of P is a bit too much. We had cocoon,re4 remake,Zelda,BG3,street fighter 6...these games deserve a place in the run more than lies of P for me And i'm not considering many other games as Sea of stars, hi fi rush, atomic heart...there've been many good games in 2023, but if i have to choose 5 or 6 names i select the first mentioned
The large amount of throwable items is an interesting point, it has always been one of Fromsoft's lacking aspects, items are so limited or grind intensive people just don't want to use them. Or even if they are unlimited, it requires you to grind spirit emblems like Sekiro.
The best part of throwables is that the Puppet has one HELL of a throwing arm. There is no range limit to them. You can hit Laxasia when she flies up to fire her lightning bolts from the other side of the bridge at the start of phase 2. The devs basically made it so that most of everything you find is absolutely viable. You could make a weaponless run if you wanted to, it would be totally possible with the Legion arm + items.
The weird outlier in Lies of P is the Chain consumable. It's one of the weakest consumables since it's melee and doesn't inflict any status ailment, but it can't be bought, there's only 7 lootable in the game as far as I know, and the only other way to get it is to farm enemies for it. It's a shame that it's so limited since it's really fun to use imo. I almost wanted to do a chain only run, but it seems the only way to do that is with cheat engine lol
The issue isn't the lack of throwable consumables in fromsoft's titles, it's that the majority of the time said consumables fall off a steep cliff and arent worth using past the early game, if they're useful at all. Lies of P is different because the throwable consumables end up being significantly powerful and can do an incredible amount of damage to enemies. Some even have amazing utility ontop of their great damage that bump up their usefulness, such as the shotput automatically breaking an enemy's posture when their health is flashing white.
Im honestly not really a souls type of person but the concept of this game was intriguing so i gave it a shot. The difficulty was definitely hard to get used to but its an absolute blast once you do. Now i see why people like this type of game
That was Sekiro for me. I played DS1 and couldn't gel with it so left it for years but something about Sekiro's style made me engage and persevere until I realised the joys of the formula and approach. Its now my favourite game of the Fromsoft Series and I went back and completed them all with a new found love and respect. Give them another shot my friend...you may just have just found your entry point... This style of game creates an itch that will need scratching every now and then... ;)
@ironborn4389 I've been wanting to try Sekiro ever since I beat this game. I think youre right. Nows the time to get it and see why people love that game so much. I've heard nothing but good things about it
My hype for this game was huge ever since the first trailer. It delivered on those expecations for me. I loved this game so much. Lets hope they can come out with more like this and build a legacy as fromsoftware did
I think the small thing I liked storywise that I want to mention is that when you do your second playthrough, you can understand what the bosses are saying to you due to the decoder which makes you understand the story better.
And the new skill trees for extra plays is also better than what from offers. They just change numbers. This game changes how you play totally if you want
This is one of my favorite games of the year and may very well be my GoTY. Not only is it insanely polished, it actually stands on its own legs as a souls game. It excels at crafting its atmosphere and overall feel, and has a level of spectacle that I wish Fromsoft would do with their games. Though my favorite thing about this game is all the little details and effects, attacks leaving marks on the ground, the hair movement, the lighting, sound design, and effects. Its these kind of little things that truly immerse me in games and is the direction I wish games went instead of graphical fidelity.
Have you played Lords of the Fallen yet?, because I think that game is up there with this too (and I think it might actually have more fun boss fights).
I have a feeling the love for this game will only continue to grow as time passes, and it will be fondly remembered as a classic. It is undoubtably the best souls-like released. Round 8 is truly a special studio, can’t wait to see what’s next from them.
It’s very rare to see a soulslike come around and be so good that you can directly compare it to fromsoft and it’ll still come out swinging hard and LoP did that. I’m so glad this game surpassed expectations and was just incredible. I’m so excited for their next project (which if you beat the game, I can’t WAIT to see how they imagine wizard of Oz)
Its an amazing game, indeed. BUT bloodborne is still far above it, obviously. And when the PC version come out (big fat copium here) it will be unreachable, basically in the realm of elden ring. Bloodbornes artstyle, music, story, bosses, weapons, characters and areas are some of the best and some of them are THE best areas to the day. Pure atmosphere.
@@foulXD I mean duh, of course bloodborne is still better. Max even says this game wouldn’t exist without BB, nobody’s really tryna say it’s undisputedly better. He mighta said it in this vid but that’s personal taste at the end of the day
@@ShenZxroI mean compared to Code Vein Yeah Lies of P is AMAZING compared to that trash which killed off God Eater Nioh 2 is also a amazing game that differentiate itself but it became much closer to a DMClike than a Souls with how ridicilously fast the gameplay is
@@deshawnnelson742i dont ACT like its untouchable, i BELIEVE its untouchable. Not one souls like came even CLOSE to being as atmospheric, and amazing as bloodborne.
I just finished this game today and what a ride it was... I've tried other souls-like games but this is the only one that fulfilled that "void" that any other game like this couldn't fill, there's something that i can't explain but it's been a fantastic game from start to finish The fact that this is their first time trying to make this kind of game and they made such amazing experience (there are some flaws but i know that they are going to use this experience to make the DLC or sequel even better) This is my personal GOTY and can't wait to see more but for now im gonna start NG+ and try to get the 100%
I guess it's the setting, fromsoftware games are fucking bleak, depressing, the world wants to eat you. Here it's nice, the Hotel Krat is without a doubt the best fucking nexus I've ever seen in any game, it feels like home, you can play music, you can try movesets, you can get to know the characters, you get some heart breaking cutscenes, you get connection to the other areas, it's a fucking blast
Im on my 5th playthrough. Everytime i find a cool weapon it makes me want to play the game again. I have never felt that way with any souls game and i have beaten all of them
This game for me is just purely amazing in its own way. Completely separate from other soulslike games, it's a fun time overall with unique looking NPCs and bosses/enemy's. The world detail and story is very captivating for the user to enjoy and this is not even talking about the weapon building/customization offered for a single playthrough alone! For me this game nails down so many missing things I wanted with FromSoft games and just capitalizes on those areas with great results. I truly feel like they just paved the doorway for a triple-AAA franchise here with how good the reception is with this single game alone. I don't even care if it wins GOTY because it already won A LOT of people over in general. This game truly made a statement, came outta nowhere, and didn't leave no crumbs! I give my experience with this game 10/10 so far! Purely based on how I did not expect this game to be so good with what it offered. For me it's a breath of fresh air :)
I didn’t even hear about this game until a week ago. Usually I do an annual bloodborne run this time of year, but decided to go with Lies of P. Incredible game! Like truly remarkable. I’m absolutely hooked. Love the gameplay, soundtracks, characters, everything. Absolute 10/10
Let's put some respect on Lies of P. It is NOT a copy-paste of Bloodbourne, and im glad people are recognizing that. It literally reminds me of Dante's inferno. It was a game that took the formula of a previous game and ran with it. I love it.
I did too for my Series S, but I'm also planning to get the physical complete edition (if Round8 actually make DLCs for it and will release 'em as such in the future) for my PS5.
While I've only played the Demo of this game personally and watched Max's whole playthrough, I can say that this is my favorite Souls or Bloodbourne inspired game. I love the entire aesthetic of the game *(I especially love the town of Krat, but I also love the whole deal with evil puppets and how they look),* the dark twist on the iconic story of Pinocchio, everything. I'm so glad that Max was able to put this game in its earned spotlight. I just wish people would actually give this game a chance instead of calling it a ripoff, and I can only hope that it gets nominated for *something* for the Game Awards. Calling this game a Souls game is very respectful. I'm actually really excited for what the dev team is cooking up now. Wizard of Oz meets Dark Souls/Bloodbourne, huh...? Sounds interesting! In fact, I'd love to see more iconic pop culture fictional fantasy characters in a Souls/Bloodbourne type of game! I love Max's idea of an Alice in Wonderland game, but I also think Peter Pan would be cool. Anyways, awesome review, Max! So glad you gave this game a chance!
Its quite a Honor to have your game basicly be compared with the games that MADE the genre as big as it is today. And have people say, if you slapped from software on the game we wud believe it. But its not from fromsoftware. Amd thats what makes it REALLY impressive
I've probably said this many time but freak it, this is my certified game of the year, and should be nominated for goty category on this year's TGA, and it's their first AA game. Good freaking job Neowiz, you did it.
Game journalists can't stand difficult games lol, they prefer the chewed up for babies experience that is spider-man 2 gameplay and story wise, what a fucking joke is that game being nominated for goty when it basically added nothing compared to the first game, the story is worse and characters feel stupid, Miles is just there, like the story would work without him, they didn't bore to give him some story arc even, could have done that instead of making mary jane the fucking black widow from queens
Just finished getting 100% in this game and I’m on my 4th playthrough rn, this has to be my fav soulslike game EVER. If someone told me fromsoft made this game I would 100% believe it.
It doesn’t really have the NPC quests, interconnected world or balanced boss fights of a From Software souls game. In fact the boss fights in this game are clearly designed around having a spectre with you, which makes it frustrating when you’re like me and don’t want to use them.
@@NieR042 what? I’m just pointing out that the game has flaws. Just because I’m not raping it’s ass like everyone else doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, calm down.
I love this game its too good from the weighty combat to the spooky atmosphere and the rich story telling even the music is realllly good its such a great horror action fantasy game
I absolutely adore this game. Probably my sleeper hit of the year and I was very impressed a studio managed to capture the Fromsoftware detail as well as add their own spin towards the genre.
I think what a lot of people forget is that Lies of P is Round8 Studio’s second game. It’s only their second game, yet they were able to capture the Souls formula excellently. They took the best mechanics from multiple FromSoft games and blended them amazingly. All while adding other new gameplay or QOTL features (weapon assembly, quest indicators) Obviously it’s not perfect. Level design could be better, for example. But for a second game? This is insanely impressive. Definitely looking forward to the DLC and their storybook fantasy universe.
finally some positive takes. im so tired of all the fromsoft fanboys and veteran who gaslight themselves into despising this game. "oh these devs are only trying to captivate the Soullike market" "Fromosft should be the only one who can do Soul games" worst is "From Soft should focus on making Soul/soul-like games" like the amount of negative comment i read when AC6 and this game come out is blood boiling(not from non-Fromsoft fans, but Fromsoft fanboys themselves)
On my second play through now. It’s just as enjoyable the second time, and I usually don’t really replay these kinds of games. It’s a really good game and I haven’t put it down. There are levels that remind me of the bio shock aesthetic, but beyond that it even has areas that feels like the original RE4. Add the sekiro and bloodbourne like combat on top and it has everything needed to just stay with me for a long time
From such a small dev team this is a monumentally impressive showing. Easily the most confident and competent soulslikes we've ever seen, down to tone and level design and numerous little details. I am so incredibly excited for what this team has next.
@@GoldenMushroom64nahhh man this was my first souls like game and i just finished it today, it took me 79 hours, but i did, i beat it, and i enjoyed every second of it, you should try
@@GoldenMushroom64 sekiro has a bigger learning curve for sure but turns way easier when you get it, Lies of P feels like having a learning curve for every boss
For me RE4R is my GOTY and still the game I had the most fun with this year, but Lies of P is a def nr2, 60 hours and 4 playthroughs, Lies of P is amazing.
The thing with this year games wasn't just being good, they were fucking fun, from Dead Space remake, to re4r, to armored core 6 to Lies of P. It wasn't just beautiful games with super envolving stories and super realistic graphics and settings, the game were fucking fun, like developers are giving more importance to mechanics again
This is going to end as my GOTY. I finished my NG playthrough a couple of days ago, and now I can't wait for the DLC or sequel, lmao. Granted, I didn't play Baldur's Gate 3, but I haven't felt like it so far, as it's a big time commitment. This is the next best thing to Bloodborne, but it innovates in new ways so it is definitely its own game
Man, and to think I was more excited for lords of the fallen, (since I never heard of lies of P before the release) man what a turn of events, I need to get home NOW and play this masterpiece
I am shocked how passionate you sound in this review but I actually feel the same way about this game.. didn’t expect much out of it and now I love it lol
40 hours later I finally beat the game and for me this game is GOTY 2023 and the soundtracks are amazing. By the end I was able to get 37/43 trophies in this game. So starting NG+ tomorrow to get the last few and going to be using new weapons/build should be fun.
Sorry to tell you but you need to do at least NG+2 for all achievements because of the endings. Just make sure you get all the other achievements by then.
Another small head up: look up the Eugenie story properly. For some reason the game didn't give me the achievement on Steam despite having done both routes of her story to get both records (The "Far Eastern Princess" and "Wolf Part 1"). Could be a Steam bug or finicky detection from the game.
@@alpha00zero for her you have to play the game twice to get both records that are different. But I got her trophy achievements in my 1st playthrough by telling her the truth and getting that guy with the glasses across from her to decipher that puzzle you get from the hound (after killing him) who was lying about who he was. So read through the puzzle documents after that guy with the glasses unlocks it then go talk with Eugenie and tell her the truth getting me the achievement for her storyline.
Dude I love how much you love this game. I feel and have felt the same way. It just hit on every level. Maybe it’s our age group and where we come from. But dare I say I liked it more than most souls games. I wish I could erase my mind and play it again
Just finished the game about 20 minutes ago. I agree with so much of what you said. I told my friend day 1 of playing that it’s comparable to a fromsoftware game, and that stuck throughout the whole game. It’s genuinely that good. No souls-like has been this enjoyable for me. They really nailed the key thing that I think I love most about bloodborne and the souls games, and that’s the atmosphere and environments. Truly a wonderful game and I can’t wait to see what else this team puts out
Love to see Max share my own thoughts on it. What an incredible game. Out of Souls games, I played... This ones easily at the top. Dare I say, it's probably the best entry Souls game out there. Everything about it is spectacular.
This is one of those games that makes us take note of the developer cus it’s that good. I’ll now be looking out for anything that comes from them in the future
There is one detail about this game that most other souls like fail to do that I love. A lot of the time in souls game at certain points of the game you can look into the distance and you can see world, and it makes you go "wow I was there a few hours ago and there's the area i was at before". I noticed this in Lie of P when I was about the to enter the church, and I saw the factory and the town city below. It such a small detail but it adds so much life to the world imo. I don't know if there is other sections like this cause I'm pretty sure i'm only mid way through the game so I guess I'll see
Just finished this today. Didn’t think it would match the praise. It did. My favorite part of FromSoft’s games are more so the journeys and characters, with the exploration and combat coming second. This game REALLY nails what I love about FromSoft’s games so much.
Haven’t beat the game yet but so far i am really enjoying the ride and I normally suck at games that’s like bloodborne and dark souls but Lies of P is amazing, simply loving this game. Love the weapon variety and just the overall story.
I loved playing this game, way better than I expected. Loved the combat, and enjoyed every area in the game. My only gripe with it is majority of bosses have 2 phases. I feel it casuses most bosses to ruin the element of surprise because you expect every boss has one.
Having a second phase is exactly what I've been begging for. How many times in from soft games there's a second phase that doesn't have a full health bar, so I generally clean up the second phase pretty easy. This was perfect for me, each time i knew I was in for a long fight. And i never felt cheated or bs, minus the door guardian. I straight forgot he existed til max said his name
Been playing Bloodborne for the first time after beating Lies of P since some consider it a spiritual successor to Bloodborne. To me, Lies of P is all the ingredients of Bloodborne distilled down to their best aspects. My favorite parts or Lies of P is the Legion Arms and Weapon Assembly. Their is SO much variety when it comes to combat. The parry windows/frames are tougher than Bloodborne, but it’s super satisfying to eventually get multiple perfect parries on a boss, break their poise, then get a visceral. Every hit feels great in Lies or P.
Just amazing polish and after LOTF had such a rough launch made me appreciate this game much more, it is my GOTY so far and nothing on the calendar can change that, at least for me.
Of all the Soulslike games I've played.. Lies of P is the best souls like game to me.. everything is done so well. The bosses, areas, enemies, combat, music, & graphics coalesce into something that's just absolutely brilliant.
And its not even chugging hard on your computer too. Okay sure i run an absolute monster of a gaming laptop but it barely gets actualy warm or barely makes noise. Meanwhile with bloodborne, my ps4 was at times hating me for playing 😂😂
I fell in love with the game halfway through. I have a total of 4 playthroughs (I got that 100% achievements) and now on my 5th. I can't help but be drawm back to the game, story and unfolding events.
Same. Halfway through ng1 and it's pretty obvious I'm going for max level at this point. I got to 225 in bloodborne and had enough. The combat here is so much better and an actual story that makes sense is nice too
Better than BLOODBORNE?! Oh dude, The fact that people are even saying that makes me want to try it out. Bloodborne ( coming from someone that had NEVER played a souls game ) Was INCREDIBLE! From Software NEED to get a remastered version out ASAP! Bloodborne with new gen visuals and 60FPS would just be on another level. Man I need to jump in to Lies of P now haha. Great review my dude!
@@johndodo2062 he said 80%. the last few fromsoft games crush lies of P. it's an excellent first stab but it's not even close to some of them. its maybe an 8.
A couple of points about Max's review that, for me, I felt the same way about at first and then upon consecutive playthroughs, I actually realized they weren't quite so positive: - Secrets and choices: There may appear to be a ton of secrets in the game and lots of dialogue choice options to branch the narrative, but in reality the game is actually incredibly linear, there's not a lot lot of stuff to miss out on, and any opportunity you have to make a dialogue choice is ultimately futile because there is no benefit to telling the truth. There is only ONE quest where being truthful actually earns a different reward - for everything else, the only difference is a slight difference in response. - Weapon variety: This looked absolutely insane at first until you realize that Blades and handles individually have preferred Damage Types (Slash/Stab). So while mixing a Slashing Blade with a Handle that has a Stabbing moveset is certainly possible, it's not the most viable and will only make the weapon do less damage. They should have completely done away with damage types. I agree with mostly everything else he says. I don't agree that ALL of the bosses were fun but that's not to say his opinion is wrong, I just found some of them incredibly tedious and they utilized two-phase/two-health bosses far too much. Other than that the game is a solid 8/10 for me and I look forward to what they do next.
One thing id like to add is how surprised i was when I was in ng+ and i saw ANOTHER P-Organ upgrade tier. I then ng+ again and there was ANOTHER??? Amazing stuff.
NG++ adds a 7th level. Though if you want to max everything out, you'll need to go to NG+++ since there aren't enough crystals. You also can't get all of the skills, there will be some that you just can't pick even with a fully filled out P-organ. Though even before you fully fill out the P-organ you'll probably run out of skills to pick since trash-tier ones are the only ones left by then.
Obviously I'm 100%ing this game. I'm already half way through my second playthrough and I can't wait for my third. I found a couple of boss fights to be underwhelming or just straight bad, but every other boss I was losing too, I was having fun the ENTIRE time. The music all the way through is amazing and I always load up Feel any time I get back to the hotel lol. Just as a side note, as someone who did the whole game on strength, fucking hell it sucks XD. This game was definitely created for dex lovers. SO I'd say anyone who is wanting to pick up the game, go for dex.
This game has been on my radar for years and it did not disappoint. Loved every minute of playing it and I genuinely want to do another play through to get what I missed.
I just started playing it and im enyoing it so much. Never played a souls like before but im having a blast with this one. But its hard to really get into it with the other games im playing (Warhammer darktide, dead cells, halo infinite and starfield.)
long time souls player - this has been my game of the year, they really do get it and the whole experience was so well paced - even the story and the twists were incredibly well done
Currently finishing up my no heal in major boss fights first playthrough and it’s been amazing. Some of the most flowy boss fights ever. Very surprised also about how it turned out. It’s gone way past my expectations. Glad you enjoyed it and give it such a good review it deserves it.
I knew this game was something special after listening to the first Record you get in the game, “Feel”. This game honestly took me by complete surprise but immediately shot up in my personal GOTY ranking.
I'm usually a 'beat it once and done' kind of guy with games. So I was honestly surprised that after I beat Lies of P...I wanted to play it again...and then again till I literally did 100%. And guess what...I still want to play more of it. The ascetic, the gameplay, the music, the theme. It is all just simple amazing and I can't get enough of it. I truly hope the DLC proves to be just as good and come soon.
When I first started this game I game it a 7 because I tried to play it like sekiro (which you can with experience), but once you realize that it’s all of froms previous works in a tight package, it becomes a 9. I absolutely love this game and I hope we get some DLC.
The minute I seen the games trailer I knew it was going to be special. Played the demo on gamepass and completely fell in love with it and then immediately preordered on steam. It's my next game to go through on my list and can't wait to complete my playthrough.
You can feel 99% of the time if a souls like is going to be good by looking at the animations and this game fucking nailed them to the fucking wall, it helps to have one of the best art design I've seen since bioshock infinite when approaching that steampunk victorian, early industrial revolution era
I loved the demo of this game! It was my first soulslike, and even though I died hundreds of times against the bosses (and even some regular enemies), I still had a blast and rarely ever got frustrated. I just wanted to keep going and 'getting gud' 😅. It reminds me of those games back in the 90s when they were hard for no damn reason. Ill be purchasing this very soon, waiting until I get my xmas bonus but I might end up getting it sooner!
Dood, I am right there with you. This game is insanely good in almost every way. I have a few minor nitpicks, but beyond those, it's pretty much perfection.
I hope you will replay it. The ng+ is truly difficult as the first playthrough, the game really keeps up with P'levels. And I agree, this is legit a From Software game
I don't really invest much into soulike games, mainly because I not really good into it, much times ago I got play one Dark Soul game as my friend strong recommendation, then short time after I just stop playing it as it's not really my type of game, so pretty much I not play any other similar games including critical acclaimed Elden Ring This game Lies Of P however, is the different story, initially it caught my attention for it's world mood setting and vibes, tried the demo and instantly I fell in love with it then I just purchase it on day one to play it fully Much to my surprise (which I thought will never touch or liked any soulike game), I loved this very much, the game is too hard for me to be sure for many bosses, but there are a lot option to let you do the grinding and strengthen your character to be your desire, the system setting is very forgiving and rarely let you feel the frustration for being bad at this kind of soulike games, unlike other soulike games which is much like out of option except to improve yourself forcefully without much grinding option to have some allowance, for myself, I initially invest a lot of health to my build so I won't get killed too fast to able to get used to enemy attack especially the bosses, which is the thing I really appreciate as bad skilled slow witted gamer I even finished the game, which is pretty much like impossible to me as I'm really bad in soulike game, so same as Max gotta give this game 11/10, and now I still play to try different builds, it just so much fun
I hated the demo!! I only picked this up because of all the positive reviews I heard. And it's my favorite game of the year so far. I love lies of p. Amazing game. So fun. So many great ideas this company brought to the table.
That's great to hear, cause I felt the same way about the demo back then, I didn't like it at all but still wanna give this game a chance, so I think I'll go for it :)
Thing I’ll definitely have to this out, from what Ive seen and have heard from you max it’s amazing. Won’t be soon as there are games I wanna get to playing but until then (if I ever do decide to get this game) ❤

The soundtrack by itself makes Lies of P a gem that deserves more recognition.
Have discovered one song for the record player and I love it alot 😍
To be honest, I found most of the records that you play in the gramophone to be insufferably 1-dimensional cheesy C-band commercial feely fake music for a game...

It's how Japanese people see western tropes and render them in their own funky way!
WHAT?! o.o!! I gotta read more😅
My personal game of the Year 2023.

The game is incredibly linear, which is why you never had to grind. It’s not as open as a from software game.
@@BasketCase-rr7txbeing open or linear has nothing to do with grind. You don't need to grind in any Souls game. You can beat them at level 1
@@BasketCase-rr7tx You clearly don't play FromSoftware games then because a lot of them are linear. Only Elden Ring was non-linear for the most part.

Me Too !
it's a real shame that people might not even consider this as a GOTY nominee just because of the fact that it's a "clone". it's a really good game that stands up on its own and deserves all the good reviews it's getting. it's a GOTY contender for me. yes, it's that good
It's good, but it's not BG3 good in my opinion, it's certainly nomination-worthy though.
I wouldn’t say it’s clone. It’s its own thing it’s just following the same structure as games of this genre.
BG3 settled it for 2023. Amazing games this year still !
It's a great game, that for sure, but for this year a goty nomination for lies of P is a bit too much. We had cocoon,re4 remake,Zelda,BG3,street fighter 6...these games deserve a place in the run more than lies of P for me
And i'm not considering many other games as Sea of stars, hi fi rush, atomic heart...there've been many good games in 2023, but if i have to choose 5 or 6 names i select the first mentioned
Not even close to GOTY lol
The large amount of throwable items is an interesting point, it has always been one of Fromsoft's lacking aspects, items are so limited or grind intensive people just don't want to use them.
Or even if they are unlimited, it requires you to grind spirit emblems like Sekiro.
They aren't unlimited. You can only carry 3 of each to start and you have to spend upgrades to carry more
The best part of throwables is that the Puppet has one HELL of a throwing arm. There is no range limit to them. You can hit Laxasia when she flies up to fire her lightning bolts from the other side of the bridge at the start of phase 2.
The devs basically made it so that most of everything you find is absolutely viable. You could make a weaponless run if you wanted to, it would be totally possible with the Legion arm + items.
this is not true at all, I finished Elden Ring with literally +1,000 throwable items I could've used
The weird outlier in Lies of P is the Chain consumable.
This dev team NAILED IT!! It really works so good! I’ve only seen videos, but I’ve enjoyed it! And it’s in my plans to buy it soon. It’s worth it.
It is on Game pass if you happen to have a PC or xbox.
This style of game creates an itch that will need scratching every now and then... ;)

Lies of P is a masterpiece, a lot of amazing games came out this year, but Lies of P is my GotY.
It should also be said that new game plus is amazing for lies of p. Running through the whole game with some of the later boss weapons is so fun.

It’s very rare to see a soulslike come around and be so good that you can directly compare it to fromsoft and it’ll still come out swinging hard and LoP did that.

Let's put some respect on Lies of P. It is NOT a copy-paste of Bloodbourne, and im glad people are recognizing that. It literally reminds me of Dante's inferno. It was a game that took the formula of a previous game and ran with it. I love it.

Less than half have 2 phases and 3 of them have 2 but with only one health bar
Can't believe they got it this right.
I love lies of p so much I played it on xbox gamepass decide to buy a physical copy to support the developers.
I posted on my Instagram that this is my favorite game of the year. I love it so much, I finished my 3rd playthrough last night.
Just amazing polish and after LOTF had such a rough launch made me appreciate this game much more, it is my GOTY so far and nothing on the calendar can change that, at least for me.
Thanks for the review Max. I'm now going to buy it.
The combat here is so much better and an actual story that makes sense is nice too
Just about to beat it for the third time and having a lot of fun trying new things out
This game is shockingly good. The combat “feel” is perfect.
This is my GOTY. Best soulslike out there.
I like it better than 80% of actual From Soft games and I’m not ashamed to admit that
Same, just fell in love with it
Because it's better than most. Every king falls eventually. From is not impervious
@@johndodo2062 he said 80%. the last few fromsoft games crush lies of P. it's an excellent first stab but it's not even close to some of them. its maybe an 8.
@@thatepicwizardguybloodborne is also an 8/10
A couple of points about Max's review that, for me, I felt the same way about at first and then upon consecutive playthroughs, I actually realized they weren't quite so positive:
- Secrets and choices: There may appear to be a ton of secrets in the game and lots of dialogue choice options to branch the narrative, but in reality the game is actually incredibly linear, there's not a lot lot of stuff to miss out on, and any opportunity you have to make a dialogue choice is ultimately futile because there is no benefit to telling the truth.
I really hope Max is gonna do a lore run on stream 🎉🎉
One thing id like to add is how surprised i was when I was in ng+ and i saw ANOTHER P-Organ upgrade tier. I then ng+ again and there was ANOTHER??? Amazing stuff.
NG++ adds a 7th level. Though if you want to max everything out, you'll need to go to NG+++ since there aren't enough crystals. You also can't get all of the skills, there will be some that you just can't pick even with a fully filled out P-organ. Though even before you fully fill out the P-organ you'll probably run out of skills to pick since trash-tier ones are the only ones left by then.
I’m on NG++ and I just love this game. I cannot wait for what’s next from the developers! I need the soundtrack asap too
I uninstalled this yesterday after getting 100% achievement. And reinstall it couple of hours later. This game sticks to me like a glue.
I think it deserves a GotY nomination a lot more than Starfield
Max played it as directors had intended.
Perfectly.
Legion Arm, Assembling Weapon, Stagger and so on.
Very impressive
The minute I seen the games trailer I knew it was going to be special. Played the demo on gamepass and completely fell in love with it and then immediately preordered on steam. It's my next game to go through on my list and can't wait to complete my playthrough.
You can feel 99% of the time if a souls like is going to be good by looking at the animations and this game fucking nailed them to the fucking wall, it helps to have one of the best art design I've seen since bioshock infinite when approaching that steampunk victorian, early industrial revolution era
@@bardockshiny Agreed- Game is truly special.
Yep I liked this more than blood borne.
The game nails it, and it's amazing that's the studio's first game!
Hopefully you stream NG+ Max 🙏🏽
Also Lie’s Of P is a masterpiece and is my GOTY!
No, it's a neowiz game that is every bit as good as from soft games. It deserves more respect than that
@@johndodo2062 exactly. It's reductive. They accomplished a hell of a lot with this game. Give them their props.
I don't really invest much into soulike games, mainly because I not really good into it, much times ago I got play one Dark Soul game as my friend strong recommendation, then short time after I just stop playing it as it's not really my type of game, so pretty much I not play any other similar games including critical acclaimed Elden Ring
This game Lies Of P however, is the different story, initially it caught my attention for it's world mood setting and vibes, tried the demo and instantly I fell in love with it then I just purchase it on day one to play it fully
Much to my surprise (which I thought will never touch or liked any soulike game), I loved this very much, the game is too hard for me to be sure for many bosses, but there are a lot option to let you do the grinding and strengthen your character to be your desire, the system setting is very forgiving and rarely let you feel the frustration for being bad at this kind of soulike games, unlike other soulike games which is much like out of option except to improve yourself forcefully without much grinding option to have some allowance, for myself, I initially invest a lot of health to my build so I won't get killed too fast to able to get used to enemy attack especially the bosses, which is the thing I really appreciate as bad skilled slow witted gamer
I even finished the game, which is pretty much like impossible to me as I'm really bad in soulike game, so same as Max gotta give this game 11/10, and now I still play to try different builds, it just so much fun
