- NOTICE! I said the Sunbust Mopar show is Saturday (August 19th) but it's actually Sunday (August 20th.) That's my bad.
Is it done? No. Is it almost done? Ehhhhh... In any case, let's take a look at this awesome 392 Hemi swap in a 1971 Dodge Challenger that finally actually runs! This project has been pretty nuts. Every little bit has required attention, thought, and hours of work. Bit by bit it has shaped up into what you see now. It's very exciting for me, as I've never gotten to build a car like this before. My approach here has been to try to make these parts harmonize and look like they belong in the car. I think I've been relatively successful in that - but there is plenty left to finish it off. Anyway, let's take a quick look at the state of the build, and listen to some sweet Hemi music.
The Graham Show is Sunday August 20th, not Saturday like you said in the video
Yes… I’ve already been told that by one Hergert so far. Lol. That’s my bad. I guess I was just assuming that a car show would be on a Saturday, like every other car show, idk
Clean install. It’s hard to make those swaps look cohesive and natural in the old cars. Great work
Two 440's, the 4 door 4x4 is no more, and now the 392 Challenger is running- you're on a great roll now!
As always your doing great, it’s very rewarding to build something and accomplish! That Hemi sounds happy!!!
You've done a really great job on this! You're almost there, don't let any of the details get away from you now. Things like that intake clamp can be so easy to let slide when you're at this stage. I'm sure it will all end up perfect, you seem like you can turn on the OCD when you need to. I can't wait to see the final product.
Here's an observation... For years, I just wrenched on my car using mostly factory engineered stuff. Obviously headers and aftermarket intakes and carbs, but that's about it. More recently I did some custom work in the same spirit as what you've done to the Challenger, albeit way less complicated. I certainly learned that custom engineering anything takes way more time than using factory components, and it takes way longer than you think it's going to take!
Yep - and nothing aftermarket ever fits quite right… thank you!
Hi Jamie! I think you've done a great job on the 392 hemi swap into the '71 challenger. It looks great! I can see the hours n days of work you've done. You do these type of things in your shop under using your ingenuity and skill. I enjoy your vids so much because you are more like an old school guy you've got great tools yes but doing this kind of engine swap is extremely involved, and I like the way you tackle unforseen problems one runs into. Great job!! Wiring looks great!! If you video the show ill be watching!!!
I’m positive you have a lot of time in that. I worked on a car for a year or two it was a custom 1969 camaro. Body mods came out of my head and were trial and error. It won best of show at a national show. Recognition feels amazing when your mind creates art with what is available or fabricated
That’s awesome! Nicely done! I don’t think I’m anywhere near up to that level just yet.
Beautiful work and well done. I hope to get this far on my challenger some day
I hope to get this far on like any of my own cars someday. Haha. Thank you!
I gotta say, you do some meticulous work. 2 thumbs up for you.
Looking forward to seeing driving stuff and burnouts.
Well, I'm impressed! It looks like it came that way. Nicely done.
Awesome! Everything is going to plan then. Haha. Thank you.
Nice job Jamie, the engine sounds great ! can't wait to see it do smokey burnouts
I am too. Good job Jamie.
Well done man, really looks great! May drop by Graham next saturday!
Apparently it’s actually Sunday. Welcome to DDG, where I have no idea what’s going on
I am always impressed with your talent! Thanks
Awesome installation!👍
I like the way you build a Mopar !!!!
im swapping a slant into a 318 truck that i got for cheap. Its amazing how much little things start adding to the final cost. I dont care how it will look when im done but i wouldnt want to do a swap like this without more money then i know what to do with.
That’s exactly where I’m at on it. It’s super cool, it’s going to be nuts. But like… I couldn’t afford to pay me to do this, probably ever. And as awesome as it’s going to be, I can have a whole lot of fun with something much cheaper.
@@DeadDodgeGarage people are asking me why I'm putting a slant into a 80 w150 and it's because it's cheap it comes with a manual tranny it's fun and eventually I want to turbo a steel crank slant and have fun.
$800 for the engine trans and transfer case with new manifolds and a new carb.
It's going to be dead reliable if the holley 1945 is any good if not I will try to find a Carter but reliable is a hell of a lot more fun then it being up on jack stands. Hence why I don't own fords
EXXXXXXXXcellent work and a really great video... I spotted the heater control valve bracket immediately.. Looks like the factory should have made it!! And yes, Binky has ALL the BRACKETS!!!! lol... Sure wish they would get back to making videos.....
Thank you! I’m really proud of that. I don’t know why Vintage Air doesn’t just give you one. Haha. I totally agree… I love those guys.
*If you take care of chickens - you're a chicken tender!*
Words of wisdom, man. Prophetic even.
- Ed on the Ridge
I wish I could take credit for that one 😅
Binky is absolutely amazing. Truly art.
I’ve watched the entire series - in awe. I should watch it again… it’s just so damn good, and their humor is the best. I could only dream of making anything approaching what they have.
Great work! Beautiful car! 😊
In the end it all works out mostly 😆. Good vids bro 👊🏻.
Jamie, that Challenger is awesome! You did a great job.
Thank you!
Great stuff. Standing ovation. I dream of making this 392 conversion to my 1980 plymouth volare coupe. I think your E-body tips can help with my mopar F-body. Similar dimensions. I have already taken out the slant 6 drivetrain.
Definitely a similar operation. Different in the realm of exhaust, engine mounts, and other things I’m sure. I don’t think I’ve seen it done in an F-body, but it definitely can be.
And again, there was much rejoicing!! Great job man!
“Hooray!”
Very entertaining! And it’s a very clean looking engine bay. Great job!
Very nice work Jamie!
Chicken Tender line= funny
My thanks to Amy Harville. Haha
@DeadDodgeGarage I have plenty more 😂
That she does. 😂😂
@@amymoll87 looking forward to future submissions 😅
I'm impressed!
Looks good !
Beautiful work
Thanks Jamie
Well done so far! I imagine the excitement of building it will exactly correspond to the relief of it leaving the shop for good, holy crap what a stressful undertaking. But I bet you learned a lot. A lot of "I don't ever want to do this again" LoL LoL
It's pretty much that. Haha. I'm afraid that it's going to be more like "Oh! You're good at this! Can you...?" And that's probably ok - as long as they keep paying the bill 😅 I am really, really looking forward to testing the finished product.
That exhaust sounds so good
Full 3” TTI system… it’s awesome. Pretty mellow at idle but it sure comes alive when you give it the beans.
Sounds sick
Nice job 👍🏿
Awesome work!
Awesome work! Would prefer to see a stock style radiator in there, but... very cool.
Agreed. This is a swap radiator specifically for this, and… I am not impressed. That’s really why I’m going to make a cover to hide it.
Beautiful crew cab
Video on that coming Sunday! Literally just watched it ride away on a hot shot rig to its new home in Arizona. I restored that truck with some help from friends for the metal, bodywork and paint, and some hands for final assembly by the owner.
I'm impressed! I seen a few swaps before, none of them look that good
Thank you! I’m really, really pleased with how it’s coming together.
@Dead Dodge Garage A Super Slick install I would say. Very nicely executed, Especially the Brackets! ;-) It's gonna be great.
Thank you!
I would luv to do something like this
Sounds Good.
Outstanding work bud!! You can work on my car anytime.
Great job!
Brackets be brilliant 😄
Beautiful car!
How many requests have you gotten for a kit? Back in the day someone made a plug and play kit to put 5.0 fuel injected Mustang engines in older Fords. There's so many of these Hemi's out there it could be a market.
None… yet… haha. That would be so hard for me to do. All of the brackets are hand made - not very fast. I’d have to charge so much. Plus, this is tailored specifically to work with the Vintage Air, this wiring setup, this overflow tank, etc etc. I think it makes the most sense to tailor build it with whatever components someone selects.
I heard "Great success" in Borat
Perfect! 😅
Damn! I'll never watch your videos while eating again! When you asked the Challenger... "You wanna run now?" I laughed so hard, I nearly choked to death! You are supposed to be saving my life with your videos! Wow! This UA-cam stuff is rough business, It appears that I'd be safer in a jet airplane! I wonder what you did during the rest of the video. I'm too scared to watch the rest of it!
🤣 I sincerely apologize for nearly killing you. I didn’t think it was *that* funny…
No problem Jamie. I'm probably the only one who laughed at it, and it was worth it! @@DeadDodgeGarage
Love the clean install.
Great job. And don’t let that Guy from M R E…. Makes you think you aren’t educating the MOPAR community. Can’t we all just get a long 😂😂
“so angry “
Thanks! Haaahaha. That fuckin guy. I know from the hundreds upon hundreds of comments I've gotten (and the *thousands* of subscribers) that I'm helping people who need it. So I'm good with that. I'm not perfect, I ain't no brilliant racer or huge horsepower guy. I live in the actual real world with real, normal people. I'll be the first one to tell you I don't know everything, I'm untrained, and I make mistakes all the time. I don't know what universe that guy lives in, but I'll be happy when the aliens take him home 😅
You have the best kind of experience ( real world experience )I will listen to a guy that did it him self then I guy that throws a bunch of money to have someone else do it. I really don’t understand why he’s so angry 😡. I just don’t get it. You have a channel that is loved by thousands and the best part is that you have obtainable cars and some dream cars for sure. Love what you do and how you approach everything with a positive attitude. Keep being you Jamie!! Don’t let that guy get to you.and I know you won’t . Keep showing the average guy with the average amount of money how to keep their MOPAR’s going.
Nice project. Did you use the original K-Frame or did you go with a QA1 ? What oil filter adapter did you go with ?
It is a QA1, but the original K-frame would have mounted it in exactly the same location with no issues. The QA1 uses the same mounts in the same spots. The theory was that it would make more room for exhaust, but the TTI headers are designed to work with the factory K-frame, so that was a non-issue. I later discovered that the QA1 K-frame flexes pretty badly around the power steering box. I would not buy one. I didn't change the oil filter adapter, I used whatever came on the 6.4. We did use a Holley engine swap oil pan.
Hey you got lights and a dome light
Why you need brake I thought they were a option ? 😅
This was a 2 🍻video 🤣🤣🤣
My wife said if you put put more than 3 videos im going to rehab
(Hahaa funny since i dont drink just
Sam Adams just the haze no beer )
Im just a goof ball who needs beer
(I do lol)
Haaahaha. Nice. I’ll try to limit it to three a week for you (and your wife) 😅
Now it's the perfect lunchtime.... What a unit! Hahahah Chicken tender hahaha
Absolutely pat yourself on the back.
Done! Thanks!
Nice videos man well explained, quick question you said we don't need the original starter relay, I already hook up my, can that cause an issue?
No it’s totally fine to use it, it’s just that with these modern setups there are other ways of doing that.
Ok Man I appreciate the help and the fast response, thanks
This is impressive- because it's like dodge in 2017 gave a fuck and reissued a 1971 dodge challenger with 392 from fact-ry..
That’s pretty much the idea! Haha. If I’m going to do something like this, I am compelled by some unknown force to try and make it look like it belongs there - and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t seem to be working. I’m still waiting patiently for them to reissue the ‘68 Charger… I think I’ll be waiting a long time.
@DeadDodgeGarage it's called OEM+ in the European car community
I think it needs more application on muscle cars.
If they would reissue a simple rear wheel drive mid/full size wagon I'd be happy. 1968 cornet wagon with a 392 yes please 6 speed if you can, 3:31 out back
Did the driver side header hit the borguson box or the passenger side torson bar?
No, I didn’t have to clearance the driver side at all. Just the passenger side around the 6 speed bellhousing.
Nice. What K member you got? Where did you get the harness?
QA1. It flexes around the steering box, I don’t recommend it. American Autowire harness kit.
Nice work, sorry to bother you quick question I m doing a hemi swap my self, but I got a hick up I have a drive by wire how can I control my 727 transmission?
I have seen people rig up a mechanism off of the drive by wire pedal to attach a kickdown cable conversion. Basically drill a hole for a ball stud up above the pedal pad somewhere and add a bracket to hold the cable. This needs to be considered carefully so the sweep of the cable there matches the sweep at the transmission. I have never done this myself but I think that would be the best way.
Thanks man I really appreciate also thanks for the quick response.
Nice work and explanation, quick question on your swap you using a gasoline return line or not?
There is a return line from the fuel pressure regulator mounted in front of the tank bank to the tank. Single feed line to the fuel rails.
Cause the gas tank that they sold me on Jegs does not have a return port on the tank and I called them and they told me that the hemi engines don't need gas returned line is true?
@@JuanDominguez-nw8rq it has to be regulated somehow. If your pump is pulse width modulated by the PCM, that works. If your pump and/or EFI system aren’t capable of PWM, that would be a problem.
You recommend to use a fuel regulator with a return line.
Do you have a video of how you hooked up your gas tank?
What manifold air temperature sensor did you use? I have a 392 swap with the Holley terminator x max and the MAT sensor plug won’t fit the oem sensor
We had to get a different one, but I can’t remember a part number or application. I think you can find that info in the Holley paperwork.
Where do you guys get the push in Christmas tree type zip ties?
We got a bag of them on Amazon. Cheap! Hopefully they stand the test of time. I just searched for zip tie push clips I think.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Cool thanks for the tip
I'm impressed. Fits like a glove. (not O.J's)
Did you use the stock ac compressor im putting a 6.4 and t6060 in my 72 d100 stepside
We were going to try to, but the compressor from the 2015 Challenger was some kind of goofy unit with extra magic that doesn’t work with this setup, despite Vintage Air saying it should be just fine. We had to buy additional adapters and they didn’t fit the first compressor. Then we learned all of that. I didn’t order this one and am not 100% on the application it comes from.
@DeadDodgeGarage good to know I heard something about the 6.4 and hellcat compressors not working with swaps I think ill just buy a 5.7 compressor
Hey you'll know what you'll have to put on that box some bracket
I don't understand why someone would spend that kind of money to put a 392 in an old car when it would be worth more with the original engine in it just looks like a giant headache I'm glad you're doing it and not me
I get the point of view - I also prefer stock type drivetrains, as I’ve said - but this one would not be worth more with its original 318… not by a damn sight. He explained it perfectly in a comment on the last video I did featuring this car. It’ll be special and unique, fast as hell with the 392 and six speed, great handling with all of the aftermarket suspension stuff, and all that for less than buying a modern one would’ve cost. It is definitely a pretty big headache.
I agreed it will be cool but I'm still glad I'm not the one that has the Retro it that seems like a giant headache
