Smoke And Glorious Noises - Budget Built 440 Swap In The "Toolbox" 1973 Dodge Charger

  • Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
  • In this video: 440 big block swap how-to in an original 1973 318 car; how to install Schumacher conversion engine mounts; modifying the 73+ spool mount K-frame; how to install a torque converter; how to easily align a Mopar flex plate; how to install a classic Mopar drivetrain from above (carefully); custom header fitment (with a torch and a hammer); and much, much more.
    It's been almost two years since I sold this 1973 Dodge Charger that I call Toolbox for some reason. In that time, it has slowly been transformed from a complete pile to the glorious machine you see before you. But the mechanical end of things - you know, my department - have been lagging behind the rest of it. So on today's episode, it's time to finally make a drivetrain happen.
    This mostly-budget built 440 was originally factory installed in a C-body Chrysler, but later found itself rebuilt for marine use. It then sat in a barn for a decade or two, then behind my old shop for six months (where it almost endured a flood,) and was finally selected as the choice power plant for this Charger. In previous videos, I detailed the original build plan and my home brew cylinder head processes.
    Follow along as I make the necessary modifications to mount the 440 onto the late B-body K-frame, drop the engine in, and finally make some smoke. With any luck, it will only be the good kind.

    I hated the body style change when those came out. Now all these years later, I see them as maybe the best of that time. They still look modern or even futuristic today. Great looking car!

      I didn’t like them at first because they weren’t ‘68-70 and all of the cool muscle car stuff disappeared. But they have really grown on me. They’re good looking cars!

      I thought the car still look cool but of course the guts, the performance engines were gone. That’s what always bothered me. It just happened so fast.

      Going from arguably the coolest looking car design ever to anything else was not going to go well for Dodge, even without the external global issues going on.
      Took me years to like the fuselage body styles, but I’m finally there and enjoy them. Not as much as what came before, but…

      Me too! I hated them, but now I think they're sweet. To be fair, I think it's because all the ones I grew up around were those gold ones with the half vinyl tops and column shifted 318s.

    It always blows my mind to watch factory films of them jambing a big V8 into a car in a few seconds without doing any damage or catching anything.
    That'll be a really nice driver when it's done.

    So my favorite car since I was old enough to know what a real car was.., I fell in love with the 68 dodge charger. I pray often that before I leave this spinning mud ball, that I will be able to own one for myself. I recently found a 1973 SE charger in the woods near my house and took it home 😊. I just picked up a 1978 police Plymouth fury with the 440 in it. I almost feel bad tearing the fury apart for my charger, but I have very little income and Alaska makes it challenging to find parts 😉🤪
    I have never done an engine swap or a rebuild, so I guess I will be watching all your videos repeatedly 😂
    Thanks for recording all your projects and for liking the same American art and history I do 🇺🇸

    I worked in a trans shop for years doing R&R work. Easiest way I learned to get a torque converter to go in on any automatic trans is to bump the top of the converter with the palm of your hand and spinning it at the same time. Someone may have already posted this tip but since I don’t have till my next birthday to read thru all the posts…. well, there you go.

    I had a 73 Charger once. It was a 318 car that had been replaced with a 360. It had been painted with a paint roller with red paint that was more pink than red. I pulled up to a red light once and did a most awesome smokey burn out. I eased away from the red light and when the smoke cleared away and to my surprise there was a sheriff behind me. He did absolutely nothing and I just drove away.

    Swapping engines as a kid in my dads shop, the old timers taught me to scribe a line around the hood hinges, and then remove the hood and put in on the roof upside down over a uhaul blanket. When the job was done, the hood would reinstall on those scribes and not have to be readjusted.

    With a factory distributor, I remove the fat short advance spring, leaving only the long, thin advance spring. This quickens the advance to roughly the same as the Mopar Performance / Mr. Gasket advance springs. Then the factory vacuum advance is too great, so I don't connect it at all. Some of late production Mopar Performance distributors have an adjustable vacuum advance can, but most of them did not and the advance in them was too much with the quick performance advance springs. he quickened advance made a huge difference in performance. For idle speed, initially I'd back out the idle speed screw out to where it didn't contact the throttle plate lever and then tighten it / screw it in until it just made contact and add two full turns (4 half turns). This places the throttle plates right about where they should be for idle in the carb. With the Mopar Performance distributors, I'd never hook up the vacuum advance, as the mechanical advance max'd out very early in RPM's.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  6 місяців тому +1

      I’ve heard that one. I have done welded recurves, usually keeping the factory springs. I have swapped for two light springs. I have modified the amount of advance available from the vacuum pod. But generally I run without it.

    • @BrandonLeeBrown
      @BrandonLeeBrown 6 місяців тому

      @@DeadDodgeGarage Two performance springs or one factory light spring usually bring all mechanical advance by 2500 - 2800 RPM. With that quick of advance, no part throttle vacuum advance is needed or desired. I measure and mark the balancer lightly with a hacksaw at 34 and 38 degrees and paint white between those lines and then paint the zero mark on the timing cover. I bring the RPM up 3000 RPM or a bit higher and set the total timing between 34 and 38 degrees. 38 degrees will give the most cylinder pressure and torque and 34 degrees is only slightly below in torque, with similar horsepower, while protecting cast pistons. I don't bother to limit the total as I set the timing at the total and leave the vacuum advance disconnected. For camshaft timing, regardless of lobe separation, intake centerline at 106 degrees gives maximum horsepower, while intake centerline at 102 degrees gives maximum torque.

    Obviously not needed but jacking the rear of the car up as high as you can get it cuts down the angle when sticking the engine and trans in together and that little bit it lowers the radiator support comes into play. Love the gen3 Chargers, they ride and drive so nice, maybe the best older platform Chrysler made.

    • @clembob8004
      @clembob8004 6 місяців тому

      Yep, that generation of Chargers and Roadrunners were the result of intense competition between Ford and Mopar in NASCAR. First the Hemi dominated, but then Ford came out with the fastback Torino/Mercury Cyclone, and Mopar's "slick as a brick" 68-70 B bodies were losing (enough to where Richard Petty defected to Ford in 1969). Then came the Daytona and Superbird, and they did so well that NASCAR decided to outlaw the whole "aero body" concept. At the same time, Mopar got smart and designed the new 71 B body to be much more aerodynamic than the previous body, and they did very well for most of the 70s, at least until they went back to "slick as a brick" styling in the Malaise era. And that is the history lesson for today.

      @@BaronVonSketchy I don't think it was better than the Superbird. It wasn't as aerodynamic, and the rear wing made the car very stable. That said, the Charger was allowed to race for several years, vs. the Superbird that was outlawed after one season.

    Nice conversion, tons of work good job! Ran into same scenario with the mini torq dakota starter install. little did i know at the time there's an extension plate which relocates wires to the front of solenoid to clearance the block. purchased one, then another... guess i'm waiting till my fury burns to the ground before installing. oh well, no time. Looks good!

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes, there is a terminal extension plate you can buy that improves things. There is actually a shorter factory extension plate often found on them which has to be removed to work on big blocks. Having no extension places the big wire right in the vicinity of that freeze plug and makes it fit - but it’s tight.

      I know that. That’s what I told the owner. 😁 my Barracuda has an 8.25 with 4.10s (or 4.11 - I can never remember which) that has suffered a decade of burnouts and mayhem under four different owners with a 360 and a four speed. I have had two others in other cars and they have always taken what I throw at them. Then again, so has the 7.25 - but that’s another story. We are changing the gear ratio to 3.55, and it makes more sense to do that with the correct, super wide late B body 8 3/4 housing that we found than with the 8.25. This leaves options open for easy future gear changes, as well as the extra strength.

I started UA-cam in the last year of the shop being in business. When I left there, I went to work part time at a Mopar only restoration shop. In the rest of my time, I service the local fleet of mail trucks, put Mopars together here, fix normal cars for people, and… whatever else needs done, really. So counting UA-cam I have 3+ jobs. Wow, why would you use a shoemocker kit when you just use the factory bigblock spool mounts and flip them around?
    You take the driver side and mount that on the passenger side and visa versa for the other.
    Its something I learned years ago, especially by dropping a 440 in where the original 360 was that I pulled on a 79 dodge Magnum.
    Oh and those exhaust tips you probably know are called Bazooka tips!
    Oh, and there's almost nothing better then the factory slapstick shifters.
    I actually luv those 73 and 74 chargers, especially the rallye versions.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  6 місяців тому +1

      I don’t think they were ever officially called bazooka tips, but I’ll take your word on that. People also call them “machine gun tips.” Dodge called them N42 Bright Exhaust Tips.
      Why would I use the Schumacher kit? Well, one, I’ve done a lot of reading on this sort of thing, but have never seen what you’re talking about before. Two, I don’t have factory big block spool mounts, so we had to buy some anyway. I tried to use factory big block spool mounts on a small block k frame way back in 2014, and learned pretty quickly that it doesn’t work. I didn’t have the thought to try them backwards. I do have to wonder if that plants the engine in exactly the right factory location, at exactly the right height, and in a range that can be leveled correctly - like the Schumacher mounts do. Schumacher makes great stuff, and at $200, it’s money well spent.
      I would have much preferred a factory slap stick and console. I even found him a console. But he decided to go this way. I’m a big fan of the ‘73-4 body style too. It’s the perfect blank canvas.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage
      I know this doesn't matter, but did a quick search, and some article about 71 through 74 roadrunner popped up about the n42 tips. It was a motor trend magazine.
      1973 was a landmark year for the Roadrunner-but not in a good way. The standard P-code E68 400 big-block base engine of 1972 was replaced by the G-code E44 318 two-barrel small-block. The optional U-code E86 440 was no longer available with a four-speed, and the optional N96 Air Grabber hood was gone. At least N41 dual exhaust and N42 chrome bazooka tips were still standard on all Road Runners (except for cars sold in California which used dual down-turn tailpipes).
      Also, I learned the hard way that flipped mounts was the real deal by other Mopar people.
      When younger I had a 73 yellow rallye with the factory black stripes, it came with the 340 but that was set aside for a rebuild. But in it was a hopped up 318, and I got my hands on a 67440 freshly pulled from a imperial and I set it in the engine bay and quickly realized it was going to mount. So that swamp didn't happen. But afterwards when mentioned this to some other mopar friends, they all knew, you should of just flipped the mounts! So some years later I did it with the magnum. It works just like they said. It fits in a factory position. So, you may want to keep that in mind.
