@DeadDodgeGarage we're not taking about 70 models we are taking about the weight between the old to the new model. My 2012 392 SRT Challenger six speed is nearly the same weight as the old Mopar. Just so you know. I am a retired UAW Chrysler employee 5th generation. Who also was on the board of SRT way back before it was called SRT. Have a wonderful day.

This in-depth drive of a 392-swapped classic Mopar is super helpful to me. I have a 2014 5.7 Hemi with the intention of sometime swapping it into my '70 Duster. I have pondered getting a 6.4/392 to swap instead but after seeing how much of a handful that is in a heavier E-body I think the 5.7 with a big cam will be more than enough in my A-body. I'm also not as concerned now "settling" for a TKX 5-speed as opposed to a T-56.
No the 5.7 will be *plenty*… and I definitely prefer how the TKX shifts, personally. Five gears is more than enough. Haha. Also it fits the A body so much better. Go for it!
This car is perfect! I love that it still looks very much like a stock 71 in every way but has just the right amount of modern upgrades to make it so much more drivable and enjoyable in modern traffic. They’re all rare today but being that it was a 318 car it’s not like you’re ruining some rare thoroughbred. Really all the things you’ve done could be undone pretty easily anyway. Plus who cares! It’s your car and do to it what you want. Love the fact you added a rally cluster and it works! Modern lights for factor looking head and taillights is an excellent addition and will keep you and your car safer from texting idiots. A modern 392 with a Tremec 6060 has got to rip in this chassis. This is my vision of what a Resto mod should really be. So classy! Sorry, forgot to mention: I really love that you’ve kept the suspension a torsion bar/leaf spring and just upgraded pieces. Those coil over setups might be great but drift to far from original for me. I like the play the hand your dealt philosophy.
Totally agree. If it’s going to be modernized, this is my idea of the best way to do that. And I am all in on keeping the torsion bars. Make ‘em bigger, sure, but it’s what makes these cars what they are.

Love it man. Awesome car. Great Job. You don't have to use all those gears. I had a 6 spd corvette and if I was just tooling around town I would shift from 1st to 4th all the time. Then 4th straight to 6th. So it was really a 3 spd. It even had a display message that recommended it for economy. I still can't get used to that extra wide chrome nose trim. I just became aware of that rare option a few years ago. And I've been around challengers since the late 1970s. Keep up the good work and thanks for the videos.

Also, I know you don't like Holley Sniper EFI systems, but I have had nothing but outstanding luck with them. But again, we don't always have to agree 100%. Keep up the great work my friend. That’s awesome! I think you told me that when we met in person. Of course we can disagree on some finer points. The important thing I wanted to get across in this build series (and kind of all of my videos) was the approach. I think I was fairly successful in that, and the Challenger also came out great. Thanks Darren!
That is the EXACT build and car I want with the exception of the color of the car..Orange or High Impact Green! About the only other thing I would find awesome about this is to know and hang with this builder as he seems like one hilariously fun guy!!! What an awesome job!!
I'm not really a classic car guy, but I'm a big Dodge HEMI fan! I would actually love to have this built! And despite the power train, I would keep the exterior and interior as original classic as possible!
If you're a big Dodge Hemi fan the 5.7 L 345 is the last true hemi Made 392 is not a true Hemi look it up it's true and I don't like it either hemi it's just a trademark name
Still beautiful. Body side molding FTW! No qualms about that '70 dash either; I'd put a nice '70 in my '71 over the grand canyon cracked dash in it now, or over most of the repros I've heard about that just don't fit cleanly. I may stay argent for the grille and tail light surrounds but the black looks great. I've been looking at LED tail and marker lights, but, especially for the tail lights, technology is changing so quickly that by the time I'm ready I'm hoping there are COB lights that make each segment look like a solid square of light instead of discrete LEDs. And sequential turn signals! Stealing the better ideas from Mercury! I like! No new hemi conversion plans for me, so I guess more power to you and Austin ;)
I'm thinking as I watched this, "Why does that interior look so good? Oh, it's the original Challenger." As much as I like the interior and exterior of the modern Challenger compared to every almost every other modern car, the original is better still. I saw a car magazine picture of the two generations parked side by side from behind and it reminded me of a picture of a destroyer parked next to a a battleship.
Having seen both in person recently… I really, really like the blacked out tail panel and grille look. Not that the other looks bad. But I definitely have my preference. Haha. I learned the difference between ‘70 and ‘71 dashes on this one. Always with the cost cutting…
Recommend adding fuse, the same amperage as alternator, to alternator wire on battery. You are NOT protected. Alternators creating a dead short to ground is a common failure. Turns the alternator output post into a ground post during failure, for which your batteries full power output is forced to chase ground through a small gauge wire. This is a common fault, especially with racers that add alternators to existing cars. Racecars with alternator require a 2 circuit disconnect to isolate the alternator when disconnecting. I like your car tho. 1st vid i seen
Brother, I have already done all that. There is a main fuse, and a charging system fuse. This is a complete aftermarket electrical system. I forgot to show the main fuse panel under the air cleaner in this video, but have shown it in others. I’m on top of it. It’s also not my car.
I'd have to say this is one of the better "resto-mod" Mopars I have seen. It's a good combo of old and new, and it definitely has some wicked performance. The only critique I would have would be on the wheels. I'm just not a big fan of the newer big-inch wheels on the older cars. I've seen worse than this, but a set of stock (or stock-looking) Mopar rally wheels from 70-71 would look better, or Magnum 500s.
Awesome job! Awesome car! Amazing how things have flip flopped, we used to put old higher horsepower engines in newer cars for better performance, now it's newer higher horsepower engines in older cars! Is that a good thing?🤔 Heck yea!👍
Beautiful car, I once owned a similar red 1974 Challenger. Just my opinion but think it would be more interesting to see a built up old school 383 or 440 with modern component like aluminum heads, hydraulic roller cam, and aftermarket fuel injection with timing control. Would have to be both much cheaper and much easier than that 392 swap with all the mods that requires. I would venture a guess the owner is good with tying up in that over 50 year old car more than what a new Hemi Challenger would cost.
He’s very much good with it - but he has told me that he is in it for less than he sold his modern Hemi Challenger for. Big blocks are great. I like ‘em. I built one exactly like that for another project. But when this guy is cruising and getting 25 MPG on the highway, yet can fly past literally anything… I think he will be happy with his decision.
@@DeadDodgeGarage It is all about what you are looking for. I own both a newer Mustang & older restored collectors. The Mustang had a full warranty, has been trouble free all of its current 50k miles, gets great gas mileage, has zero squeaks, rattles, or leaks, plenty of power, and if needs repairs it would be welcome at any shop. The collector cars although driven very little always seem to have issues pop up, parts can be hard to find, and I had to learn how to make my own repairs because local shops here won't touch an older car. Most refuse to service even newer cars that have been modified. Restomods are fine for traveling a few miles to raise the hood at local cruise-ins, but I would take a new Challenger any day to confidently make a cross country trip or use as a dependable daily driver.
Not just good!!! It's good enough!!!

9 minutes in and like what you’ve presented here. I’m from the same school of thought 👍
Thanks for the Wild Ride
I love that car!
Awesome I had a 72 Rallye 340 this is a beautiful car!
Sick ride dude! great project
My best freind had a blue one with a 318 automatic, He loved that car.
Oh, it's the original Challenger."
As much as I like the interior and exterior of the modern Challenger compared to every almost every other modern car, the original is better still.
Wow, That's a wicked Red.
That that is wicked & beautiful as well. Nice job.
What a spectacular rendition of my dream car….
I think it's amazing, and so glad you didn't LS swap it like people are doing everything now.
UGH. Na I ain’t about that.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I want to put a 5.7 Hemi from a Pursuit in a Fox body mustang
I like the red! 392 Hemi is a step forward from a 318 car.
Congratulations! You look in that like a Kowalsky in "Vanished Point"! Greething from Poland & drive carefully!
I get it - but those options likely won’t fit over the gigantic Wilwood brakes.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Oh, yeah, didn't think of that.
Wow《☆》👍🏾🍺🤳My 73 Dart Sport would be Awesome with a 392《HEMI》✌😎☯️
Most excellent -
Fantastic job -
Awesome job! Awesome car! Amazing how things have flip flopped, we used to put old higher horsepower engines in newer cars for better performance, now it's newer higher horsepower engines in older cars! Is that a good thing?🤔 Heck yea!👍
Sadly not for long though, thanks to politics :
Man that’s a sick rebuild
That car looks like a handful,in the best way.
Thanks for the ride along.
Nice work! Well done!👏👊
