    Don't be afraid to be rude. I've encountered guys who have actually tried to strike up conversations with me alone in dark parking lots or on empty subway platforms. I'm sure they're offended when I just turn around and walk away from them, but just in case they really did have bad intentions, I got away and showed them that my guard was up. The fact is that a lot of muggings and rapes have occurred with the attacker striking up a conversation with a victim and lulling her into a false sense of security.

      cat thornberg Agreed. It's not only a safety concern but some places, there's touts and talking to you is a way to try to get you to buy something. I just pretend I didn't hear them or am a foreigner who doesn't understand their language. Use the language barrier as your defense.

      Even guys know striking up conversation with a lone girl in a dark parking lot, etc is super creepy. They deserve your “impoliteness,” absolutely.

    Glad you covered this. Part of what safety boils down to is paying attention to our surroundings and listening to out gut. Something can happen anywhere. It is important to be vigilant no matter where we are.

    Wonderful tips. I grew up on the streets in HCMC, Vietnam till I was adopted and these are things I do as an instinct. The pen one was a new one to me though 😉 as a teenager in Mongolia I used to actually walk around with a rock in my hand sometimes to feel safer if I was to walk out alone at night!
    I'm looking forward to travelling a lot more now, especially alone to soak in the experiences better so I needed to refresh. Your video was really straight to the point, yet informative and rounded. I really appreciate it. Subscribed too 😊 two HUGE thumbs up!

    Hey! I just wanted to come back to this video and say that these tips really helped me. I never thought I would have needed this video's advice, but I have been studying in South Korea and have been going out alone almost everyday. I think it is really safe here, but these tips have really made me feel confident. Thank you!

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  9 років тому

      21795able Thanks for returning to tell me that! I appreciate it. =) Korea for the most part is safe, but there's always the exception to the rule. Another tool in your pocket for Korea is CCTV, which is something Koreans fear a bit? Anything happens, its likely recorded on CCTV, which is why you'll see those signs everywhere, even in neighborhoods.

    Excellent video. I like your tip about acting confident even if you aren't. Dawdling, acting indecisive is an open invitation for interaction that YOU don't initiate. I've had success in foreign countries with gestures. The best one is holding your hands up, palms outward at chest height and shaking your head. It says, "sorry. back off please" all over the world.

    I gauge it according to the person/ situation I'm in. Some people are genuinely good people & your gut will tell you that- like a mother w/ kids. In that sense, she might be someone I'd consider an ally to my safety.
    Other situations, I deflect. I change the subject by switching the conversation back on them, with "Oh, by the way... " Then I barrage them with questions because I'm the curious tourist. Another one I use a lot- My friend is meeting me at our hotel.

    Thanks for the informative video. Lucky for me I used these tips when I traveled solo in Europe. I would also add that if you are traveling solo, create an itinerary and contact system for family or friends. That way in case something goes wrong, there are people will be able to assist. Include travel info (which flight/train company and #, etc.), accomodations, and intended activities (like surfing or hiking). Having a shared itinerary can help in a pinch. For example, on the way to Rome, I was notified my hostel was overbooked. A few texts to my mom allowed me to get a new hostel with contact info before I arrived.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  9 років тому +2

      Excellent tips Nicole Ozark ! I use those too. With accommodations, I'll add onto yours- if traveling abroad, where you don't have cell/internet access, list your first, second and third accommodation options. My flight got delayed by a couple of hours and when I arrived at midnight, my hostel had already given my room away... ;)

    Great Video!!!! some friends and I were just talking about people and their travel habits. It's like when you are in your own town, we are all so conscience about what is going on around us. When we go on vacation you lose every smart brain in our bodies. Thnaks for making this some very useful tips

      Lucky Uptown Chick ha ha..you're welcome! I think everyone thinks vacaaaaaation means "absolutely no responsibilities" (even to ourselves). Even, the idea of "Safety tips" (deep voice) is funny, considering we habitually practice some of these on a daily basis! But we all forget that the moment we hit vacaaaaation.

    Carry a false wallet, when asked to give up your money etc. I never carry expensive I-pads etc. in the street. Others will make a call for you. Never let people hold your phone! The cheap second phone. lol

      I always carry 2 wallets, also. My original thin wallet, in my front pocket(with a rubber band rapped around it). My 2nd fake wallet in my back pocket stuff with those old used up gift cards. If I'm ever robbed I'm willing to turn over my fake wallet to any thief, cause I really don't have any use for it anyway. Me😁, the thief😩.

    I love the tip about wearing your backpack in front and smh at the person who commented. I think it’s actually nicer to fellow travelers when it’s worn in front. It’s so easy to forget the bulk on your back as you move in tight spaces and bash into people with the backpack.
