Very good advice, Alice. The one thing I would add is that assume anyone is capable of robbing you, or will attempt to rob you. The one time I was pickpocketed happened at my favorite bookstore years ago. I was using a money clip to keep my money organized, which I carried in my hip pocket. When I went to pay for my books, I discovered that my money clip wasn't in my pocket. The owner of the bookstore (whom I've known for 20+ years and trust implicitly) helped me look around in case of dropped it. When I clarified that it was a money clip and not a wallet, her face turned white. "Oh no! I saw the woman in a gray blazer leave the store with a money clip in her hand!" She went and checked her surveillance video, and although the footage was grainy, we saw what happened: the middle-aged woman in a blazer with her fingers in my pocket, expertly slipping my cash out while I was perusing through a book. I hadn't felt a thing, and because she was well dressed it didn't occur to me to keep my guard up. It was definitely a lesson learned!

Seriously ... 'avoid hotspots like Africa or North Korea'? Sweetie, people watching this video are concerned about pickpockets in major cities like Paris or London or Milan. Nobody visiting North Korea is worried about pickpockets... they are worried about their life! And not all of Africa is dangerous. Have you visited Chicago or North Philly or Wilmington,DE or Newark, NJ ...?? C'MON so would you recommend people to not visit the U.S.??

Good tips. LL bean makes a good old school money belt, zipper black leather. I agree blend in when traveling.

Love #5 about guidebooks, excellent advice. Paris I hated looking like a tourist and I did it to myself with the guidebook!
Only thing I would add using a service to watch your house or pets when you are away. I have used Rover before and it was ok but I used another one I liked better. I'll try to find it and post. Really made me feel better that my apartment was in good hands.

May I add one thing.. look around and make eye contact with people around you if possible.. that helps deter some muggers (especially if you have a scary face like mine, lol)
Keep up the good work :)

Great idea. Looking people in the eye and acknowledging you notice them is definitely a great deterrent.

Serious travel concern: hotel rooms with silver safety bar that leaves a gap between door and wall when opened can and will be compromised with a wire hanger from outside. It happened to me in New York. I was gangraped, tasered and roofied. Hotel employees and police involved (I'm a whistleblower). A tennis ball can be wedged in there to close the gap. A Lowes safety bar under door handle can be kicked out from the gap at the bottom of the door. Thank you. Stay safe.

I am so sorry Natalie, what a terrible and horrid thing that happened to you. I hope you can heal from this with time. My heart goes out to you. No one should have to experience something like that

On my last trip to Europe, I began keeping my wallet in my front pocket and I've just kept doing it since. It's safe and it doesn't do that thing over time that happens to back pockets that keep wallets in them. : )

How safe would I be in Europe if I followed all these guidelines but I wore western clothes? I don't think I have any that the locals wear.

    • @AliceFordAdventures

Hi Travis. I'm not sure where you live, but Europeans dress similar to Western people and is generally pretty safe outside of petty crimes. Just watch your belongings in busy tourist areas and on public transportation. My tips on dressing the part are more angled towards cultures that are very different than the Western World like the middle East, Northern Africa and most Muslim nations that have cultural differences in what is appropriate.
