    Travelled to New York City last December (Love the cold, not sure why lol) really enjoyed the city lit up with Christmas lights and such, travelled alone, didn't ask friends to come, didn't want to go through comparing schedules, what works what doesn't as my scheduled time off isn't very flexible. First time travelling alone and it felt so great, liberating rather. Your videos, commentary, sight seeing are very inspirational.

    I hate single supplement costs. I've been arguing that it should be the opposite- we, single travelers, use up less resources. Don't punish me for enjoying my own company :)

    Watched a lot of your videos this time last year when I was preparing for a 3.5 month trip to India. It was my first long solo trip and I had never been to Asia. You really helped me out and encouraged me to stay excited leading up to it when I was riddled with anxiety and doubts. Thank you so much!!

    So honest. That’s a good description of all those thought processes. That’s the part of traveling that is the base of what we do. It’s a challenge. So tours really help and give us a great idea of what there is to see without worries. Go back after the tour to places you likes. Eg bangkok.

    Great video! I mainly travel solo, and find by doing so I am forced to interact with locals more. If you have someone by your side, you both tend to stay slightly more isolated. If you are thinking of travelling solo - just do it. It will definitely make you a stronger person.

    Thanks for the video Christine! I'll be heading back to (Chiang Mai) Thailand next month - for 30 days! I still have this on-going anxiousness when it comes to traveling solo; this is my 2nd trip since 8 months ago and I thought I would have learned from my first trip to Thailand haha.... I went on my first trips alone when I was 16 years old first Houston Texas then Paris France and lastly Osaka japan in the same year I didn't really do planing or research cause limited resources at that time and was going to see Japanese visual Kei bands. At that time the hardest part was not speaking the language and knowing the currency how to pay or getting from place to place in Japan but in the end some how it all worked out. For taking photos I do self timer and find a place to put the camera when I want a photo. I learned a lot since then though and have been traveling with my boyfriend recent years.

    I agree with everything you say, I've done a lot of solo backpacking; one you don't mention is swimming in the sea, having nobody to watch your stuff. I tend to either ask a stranger, or watch it from the sea, or just not swim.

    Hey Christine, thank you so so much for your videos. I just discovered your channel and have been bingewatching most of your videos. I'm currently planning my first trip alone and I feel like a total baby since I'm 26 and everyone seems to have been travelling alone much earlier in their lifes. But oh well. I'll have an easy entry into my first all-alone trip since I'll visit my father in Bangkok first. Then I'll go to Bali/Indonesia which somehow seems like a very safe place for females to me. Afterwards I'll end my journey in Singapore which is probs the most western city in that area. I'll be always staying in hotels because I'm a bit too socially awkward to sleep in a room with 7 other people like in a hostel (also, I can afford it - thanks to my first job paying quite well). I know that this is not like a hardcore backpacking tour but it's what I feel most comfortable with. I know that your experiences will also help me to get along. Thanks a lot - and greetings from Germany.

    At the end of May I'm moving to Albania for at least a year. I'm have enough saved up to last longer than a year, but I will try to supplement my income with UA-cam and other online methods, and am willing to work odd jobs along the way. I was lucky and am staying the first few months with a fellow US expat who has lived and worked in Albania since 2018 so that will ease the learning curve a bit lol

    I am planning a 1st time solo trip to Dubai - again. I keep hearing about "things" that happen and then I think "no way" and I put my trip on hold. Then I watch videos that spark that interest and I am ready to fly. I am usually not an anxious person but then maybe I am. I don't want to go and stay at the resort the whole time. I want to ride the taxis, the metro, and visit the souks and the Dubai Mall knowing I will stay safe.

    I prefer to travel alone. It's difficult to take bathroom breaks because you need to carry everything with you. I also hate asking cellphone photo-takers to use my Canon 80D to take photos. I've since purchased my own portable tripod and remote.

    "If I knew what I want I wouldn't be thinking about it." Ha! True story. I am currently on a solo trip in South Korea, and before that I took a solo trip to Thailand, and before that I was in China ALONE. I totally relate to this video. #4 is actually my biggest challenge. It hinders some of the places I want to go. For example I am in Seoul and I really want to go to the Trick Eye Museum but there is no one to take my photo in front of the amazing 3D artwork -sigh- but I definitely agree that traveling alone gives you the freedom to make your own choices. I also have a travel vlog if anyone has time to check it out :)

    LOL - perfect. I have the Nepal part down (in my mind) but I am already overwhelmed by endless options once I drop down into India. I can visualize as far as Varanasi but after that, it keeps coming up a blur. "North again after the Gandhi ashram in Ahmedabad or farther south to Mumbai? Christine likes Kolkata so that's officially back on the list and I'll stay where she stayed. But wait! Look at that train ride! 2 days! I'll be deep into January I bet! I'll just head straight up to Dharmashala then. Oh just forget it, I can't think straight!" I also felt a sudden tinge of "OMG!" today when I realized that I have to be able to get back to the airport in New Delhi by Valentines Day - where will I be before that? What if I can't get on a train? What if I'm running out of money? Be ready to fly back to New Delhi no matter what! what if what if what if...haha.

    I think that how well you pack your carry-on is potentially one of the biggest "mine-fields". for example if you have so many "thingeys" that you can't keep track of where a certain special thing is, it can be stressful. Also large chargers and bottles of liquids that are of a size that they need to keep pulling you aside to verify can make things less smooth as well. Be organized and plan well. :-) Just sayin' :-)

    Hi Christine, thanks for this video. I needed a boost after getting a lot of discouragement when I told my friends and family that I intend to visit Italy and Spain during a London trip. I have been warned of Italian mafia, violent crimes, dodgy public transport, pickpockets (this I'm already aware of) etc. This will be my first solo trip and needless to say, my confidence is shaken by these comments. From your experience, do you think it is wise to visit Italy as a first time solo traveller? I have received the most disapproval particularly for Italy.

    • @grrrltraveler
      @grrrltraveler  7 років тому +1

      Most of the time, when I doubt, myself but there's no turning back, I'm forced to take a stronger *proactive stance*. Raise the alert level to my environment. Fake the confidence and be aware. Know you can find help on the road if you reach out.
      Parts of Italy can be challenging- pickpocketing gypsies are notorious. But I never experienced them and had a perfectly uninterrupted trip. Still, I'd avoid taking anything expensive and if you do, keep it close to you always.
      Google the way they operate and follow my video safety tips (Here's additional tips: grrrltraveler.com/trip-planning/ways-to-outsmart-pickpockets-and-thieves/ ).
      Life offers no guarantees, so whether there are easy or challenging countries, it's all relative and it eventually becomes your "story". On the upside~ Challenging" countries will offer accelerated growth.

      Hi Alicia,
      I’ve been solo traveling in Europe about 2 years. I am still always anxious leading up to a trip but as Christine says, once you book the flight and go into planning mode much of the anxiety disperses. I love Italy and have to been to most of the major cities with no problems. I practice all the frequently discussed, common safety tips. My one suggestion for a better/easier experience is to try to learn some basic Italian.
      Next month I tackle Naples and later Calabria by train!! (To me, this will be an accomplishment because Naples does suffer from a bad reputation. Calabria, on the other hand, is an underrated gem.)
      For all the worry, energy and expense of travelling, I have never regretted a trip and have made great memories for myself. You have to be brave, prepared and just jump in!

      Thanks, Baron! I bought a anti-theft Travelon bag. There are so many anti-theft products. Got lost in it as I was browsing!

    I hear ya.
    1. I book my flight 8 months in advance just because there was a good deal on a hotel suite. prayed that I wouldn't have to cancel 2. I reached in at 1am and had a hot air balloon at 5am. prayed that the flight didn't get delay or cancel. 3. I wanted to try a deep cheese pizza pie thingy but the small pizza was so big that I know I wouldn't be able to eat it out alone. 4. Disney don't allow selfie stick so I bought a Samsung DV180 camera which was small and have a preview screen at the front... Dual View. That help to hold a lot of pictures. 5. I had use the handicap washroom and I was told off by another passenger who came with a wheelchair person. 😲

    My toughest challenge when traveling alone is my handling of foreign currency. I get a little bit of an anxiety attack and forget how to do math comparing the wildly different denominations. Alone I can do fine but a face to face transaction at a market can go awry. I've had the sellers have to reach into my hand and select the correct change. I believe most have been honest but I know I was ripped off in Vietnam when a woman took a very large bill from me and hurried me on my way. Otherwise, I love the challenges of finding my own way in a foreign land.

      I read where is better to take cash rather than using a debit card to buy stuff, but yes calculating money can be really tricky. I figured I would just give myself plenty of time to figure out how much money I need and have the money ready. Sounds like keeping lots of small bills is a good idea too.

    my first ever holiday abroad was solo and i loved it the only thing i regret was researching the local food as it was disgusting. but the freedom of been able to do what i want whenever i want without any compromises well made it worth it!

    Wouldn't you say traveling with someone such as a significant other, or perhaps groups of friends is more fun? I've done the solo thing and it was really cool meeting different people. going places by myself where I wanted when I wanted etc. But I feel like sharing these experiences with the ones you truly love can be more awesome, never been with others so I can't say

      Travel tests relationships. I enjoy time w/ my gf, but it requires sacrifices of things I like and when I get in a fight with her, that can ruin a good chunk of my trip. Talk about living in cold silence for 4 days, when you're in Paris for 5 days. Not fun.

    • @StephenVTran
      @StephenVTran 7 років тому +1

      MikeDiamond yeah but how about when y'all pass the test? A small paddle boat across a lagoon somewhere in France, dinner on the Eiffel Tower..I can't ask my loved ones, remember when we made this memory you know? Maybe I'm at just at this stage in my life lol

      The test never ends. Unless you get married.
      But then there's divorce. I don't think you're looking for a group of friends or partner-- you sound like you just want a gf for a romantic vacation.

      GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa advantages of solo travelling. I went on my first solo trip last summer and enjoyed myself so much that I took a month off again in October for another solo trip. Now the thoughts of going away with someone else is redundant. You can never go back once you have the solo travel bug.
