Even though I have the Cap1 duo and really like it as a duo, I did jump on the Amex gold once again to earn more Amex points, though given its fee it needs to be regularly evaluated for value and can always get rid of it if necessary. But you pretty much said it, that Cap1Duo is great and doesn’t require heavy commitment to make up the fee like the Amex Gold does.

I’m quite conflicted. I’ve been banking with capital one for years but using an Apple Card, looking to get a card to start earning better rewards. I was leaning towards getting the savor one and then venturex. But my SUB offer from Amex gold is 100,000 points at the moment. What do you recommend?

I'm with you, brother! I have the Savor card, but that $95 AF is easily made up with one category. I pay $12k for my local MLS season tickets. My Savor also has/has Uber One monthly credit, plus I've been earning 10% on Uber Eats and Uber the past year and will do so until November. I pair this with the Venture X and I'm golden.
Yeah, it looks like you're an example of why Capital One should not cancel its offering of the Savor card. A lot of Amex Gold refugees would love it, but Capital One seems uninterested in getting them on board.
@@franciscanstudent, I couldn't agree more! I haven't heard if they're going to continue to honor the Savor and it's earnings or make a change. I hope they keep my earnings like they are. We shall see!
The current change has actually turned my effective annual fee from $10 to -$15 with the Resy credit. It’s easy for me to use all the credits so it’s a no brainer to stick with the Gold card. If you struggle to use the new benefits, using the Savor One is easy.
That’s awesome. I’ve never used Resy for anything so I’d have to go out of my way to use it and most of the other credits. I could do it but it’s too much work
I would have gladly signed for the Amex Gold card, but I mistakenly got the Plat first, so Amex lost me there. I originally got the Savor One for the 3X cash back but I expanded to the Venture (and later Venture X) and now move the 3X bonuses over. Building up sweet sweet Aeroplan and Avios options 😀
Just swapped Amex Gold for Plat for 100K bonus. Rejected for SavorOne, so we use Citi Custom 5X groceries + Chase Flex for 3X dining, better than 4X 4X AX Gold because we spend more on groceries...
@@LukesPointsandMiles No, I was being sarcastic. It just seems ironic that a die hard Gold/Plat user would be incentivized to use both Equinox and Dunkin, and Saks and Walmart for that matter. Amex probably doesn't care, whoever will subsidize their credits, but it does make you scratch your head sometimes.
I def got the Gold too early! I am ALWAYS chasing a SUB, so the Gold goes unused most of the time. If the Sav1 is unused, no big deal, its there when u need it. I was out from under the gold, but they threw a retention offer at me, so I got 309 days left with it LoL. Thanks for the video Luke, no one will listen to the advice, but it is great advice.
Total side note but I've noticed Capital One is pushing the saver and venture X a ton in between the football game commercials. I've never seen credit card companies push as much as they have but even during the UFC fights this past weekend in between every fight there was a Capital One venture X ad
You are spot on. I have both cards and I am currently overseas, and I will be for awhile. AMEX is not good at all grocery points x1. Saver one grocery points x3. none of the credits can be used overseas offered by AMEX. It has become a terrible card.
Agreed. Bottom line for me is that neither card gives any kind of helpful status, especially if you already have the Amex Platinum. So why not start at $0 instead of -$325?
Great video as always, Luke. Its tough to justify dealing with jumping through the AMEX Gold hoops when you have the SavorOne and BILT as no-nonsense alternatives. I get a $100 corporate account discount on my Gold card and I'm still thinking about cancelling it. Statement credit fatigue is real....
Are you Cincinnati native???? I heard you say Bengals!!!!!!! Great video! I was contemplating the Amex gold but may go for the Savor. I really like Am Ex Blue Cash Prefered 6% cash back on groceries
I wish that I could get either. Been trying to product change from the venture one to the savor one. No luck there. In pop-up jail for anything AMEX related.
In terms of fees and flexibility; I agree any other dining/grocery card is probably a better fit for most people. The rest of us just can't hang with the average dining card though, and for that Amex holds onto our pockets with annual fees. 😂🎉
I prefer the cash triangle: [Citi Custom Cash - 5% Gas] [SavorOne - 3% Food/Entertainment] [WF Active Cash - 2% Everything] $0 fees and all the benefits you talked about. Everything I buy is 2 to 5% back no BS. Gotta play the system or it'll play you. Don't carry a balance! Lol...

I do most of my grocery shopping at a local neighborhood market walmart & none of my credit cards will code there as grocery except my gold ole amex Gold or BCP. So its a keeper for me. However, i do have the cap1 S1 for international trips & like the 3x on entertainment
Once again, great video. Definitely considering this duo for my next set up. Question: This might be considered heresy in the travel card world, but do you have a preferred travel portal? The reason why I ask is because, more often than not, I’ve found myself booking travel through the Chase’s travel portal. This was because, even though I mainly use Chase points for Hyatt redemptions, Hyatt award availability isn’t as available as I thought it would be. On the portal, however, no problem. Additionally, when I needed to book IHG hotels, I found it less expensive (points) on the portal that I would’ve been charged if I transferred points directly to IHG and booked it that way. Disclaimer: these are simple domestic redemptions. Video suggestion/request: a video comparing the pros and cons of the three main travel portals (AMEX, Chase, capital one) Thanks, Luke!
@@SrvdusPancaax I don’t know if I have a preferred portal. If I’m looking at non chain hotels I usually just book to earn the currency I’m trying to build up.
Man I can’t deal Capital One credit cards; even though I love their savings & checking. Citi & Capital One are strange. Verizon Visa Signature card is my future for groceries & and takeouts replacement for the Gold.
Like any card, the Gold is obviously good for the SUB and the first year if you use the SUB for a sweet redemption. But it's extremely hard to justify the card long term thereafter. It's just annoying and it doesn't benefit us as card enthusiasts when Amex or any issuer for that matter decides to go with the coupon book strategy rather than improving card multipliers. Imagine 4x on entertainment on the Gold card and a raised annual fee? I think that would have made the card much more worthwhile to justify keeping instead of a raised annual fee and just more credits to show for it.
Only issue is the 0.5CPP cashout of Venture X? I like Chase ecosystem because it's 1 CPP cash out. And at least if one has the setup iwth amex they get 1 to 1.1 cpp cashback.
@@jenniferw8963 not exactly, Amex is .6 if we are comparing and you can easily get 1 cpp with cap1 if you are erasing a travel purchase which is pretty easy at least in my experience.

While only traveling domestic for the next few years, I prefer the travel partners of AmEx (and Chase). I may consider the Savor One when I start doing international travel.

This might not be popular, but this latest Gold Card refresh is actually an improvement in my opinion. Dunkin Donuts, Resy Restaurants, and Five Guys are all over town in my area. It’s sure easier than Shake Shack and Milk Bar and trying to only pay a $10 annual fee. I’m not saying it’s a great card; it’s just easier to get positive value than it was.

The American Express cards are so overhyped like you said there's a good chance you will not even have your card accepted overseas and on top of that you won't earn any of these multipliers overseas. So unless all of your travel is domestic then American Express is absolutely worthless in my opinion. The venture X and saver combo will get you so many more points

I have to agree Luke. The Gold is high maintenance for too little returns. I'm planning to get the Savor card in a cpl days to compliment my VX. I preferred the Savor to the Savor1, but they discontinued it - great breakdown👍🏾
You have to be careful with the gold card and groceries. When they say supermarkets they mean it. My savor one earns it anything that codes as grocery. I recently put my hello fresh on my gold card just because I was thinking groceries and didn't earn 4X
Yeah man that’s an over looked aspect is that you don’t actually even need to use the Duo. Makes churning Chase cards easy. Also if I had to be real, the acceptance rate is what kills me on Amex. I’m not going over seas to spend 2 to 3 k on dining in two weeks not to earn x4, no way.
For dining, I have the Bilt and Freedom Flex product changed from an Freedom Unlimited and if I use it as a top dining category, the Venmo Visa and when on quarterly categories the Flex and the Discover It. For Entertainment I have a bunch of 2% cards and if I use it as a top dining category, the Venmo Visa and when on quarterly categories the Flex and the Discover It. For Airlines I have the Bilt and a bunch of 2 percent cards. For Groceries and Gas, I have 2 Citi Custom Cashes and one of them was a product change from a Double Cash, also Blue Cash Preferred that even if I downgrade it to a Blue Cash Everyday because of the On U.S. Online Retail Purchases. That still doesn't include the once a year that the Freedom Flex and Discover It cards can be for Entertainment, Groceries and Dining as a rotating quarterly category. I can use the Gold and my effective annual fee after the credits would be a $1 after using the 3 credits for Dunkin, on GrubHub and Uber Eats. I wil get coupon fatigue though. My annual fee isn't due until after March 14, 2025. I upgraded from Green on August 11, 2023, so I might downgrade sooner to Green or stick it out until my next renewal date with Gold and see if I get a good retention offer to stay on Gold, downgrade to Green or cancel the card altogether. My Amex points will be safe because of my BBP.
I cancelled Gold around 2 years ago, thats when they replaced airline credit with useless uber. One year they had both airline and Uber credits, and i was trying to use all 24 of them. Uber was a PITA and money loser. And I went every month to Cheesecake factory to buy $10 GC and then once a year we went there to eat. This was PITA as well, so I just cancelled.
You guys always overstate the hotel values with these cards! No card has great hotel benefits, and I have Chase and capital one, and I don't care about hotels I can find good hotels through their portals. The portals offer great value sometimes.
Yep. That 1x just isn't enough to justify the work. And I know the argument that card mutipliers don't matter us somewhat true, but honestly, I use subs mostly for bigger, more irregular spend qnd non-bonused purchases. As such, subs tend to pull velocity away from my Venture X. I still think there's room for an easy setup for ongoing soending. The Savor One is just better for that. Dont put your mental effort in $7 credits; put your energy into sub strategy, spend for status or benchmark bonuses (like companion passes or FNCs). If the ongoing multiples dont matter that much, then take the easy 3x (also: the DPs suggest the Savor One is more expensive in its xosing than what Amex does) that requires no thought and then focus on what does matter.
Capital One is good on paper. I wouldn't be so quick to hype it up though. Their customer service is pretty terrible. Everything is a fight with them. Amex, on the other hand, has some of the best service in the game. I gotten value with the venture x and have the savior one, but it's always been a huge pain in the ass.

What would be cool is to see a break-down of the Capital One Duo vs. the duo of Amex Gold & Amex Platinum.

Like any card, the Gold is obviously good for the SUB and the first year if you use the SUB for a sweet redemption. But it's extremely hard to justify the card long term thereafter.
