I remember Take That being removed from the official program of performers that night, as they weren’t sure Gary would be able to perform. Where his voice cracks when he sings “don’t close your eyes don’t fade away” just breaks me every time. He was exceptionally brave for doing this, mere hours really, since losing his baby girl.
The line “they’re lighting up the sky tonight, for you”. I see the fireworks go and just think it was the perfect tribute to his little baby daughter. It was for her. 🩷
I cried watching him sing, especially in the beginning of the song where you could hear his voice crackle a bit! The lyrics must have hit so close to home for him! The strength and courage he had and still has is utterly amazing! I wish Take That were more popular here in the US! When Robbie went solo, he was/is a major hit over here! Gary even moved to Los Angeles and was managed by Clive Davis for awhile, and just didn't receive the recognition he deserved! They're a fabulous group!
yes ...that was great. I assume one of their advantages is, that GB has a lot of world wide known Artists. But the whole ceremony was awesome….they really knew how to do it well.
This performance still gives me chills and hearing his voice crack gets me everytime cause you can tell just how emotional he is. I have so much respect for him to decide to perform in spite of the loss that he suffered, especially with choosing this song to sing. It brought me right back to the CIN performance when he said "Dad, this one's for you" with the same song. What a powerful performance this is. Proud Thatter.
I remember watching that performance live and crying the whole way through, the words are so relevant at the time of his loss. Heart breaking hearing his voice crack. Lovely to see the concern on marks face at the beginning
Of all the musical acts who performed at this event, basically all of my faves in the world, THIS performance stuck with me the most. Just beautiful and very moving. No country on Earth can top Britain when it comes to musicians.
Gary had lost Poppy just days before this performance. You can hear the emotion in his voice in the first few words and the looks from his band mates tell the world about their friendship. Just amazing. Well done, Gary. Well done.
Gary Barlow will forever be a legend, his music and his dedication even through adversity. This is a clear example, fantastic performance I remember this time last year Myself and my mother in tears watching this. RIP Poppy.
I can't don't know how Gary got through this so soon after his daughters passing. That's when I really felt respect for him as an artist. That's true professionalism right there... Love TT.. genuine guys with genuine talent.. ❤️
I don’t know how Gary found the strength to perform after they had just lost little Poppy. You can see the pain in his eyes and that wobble in his voice at the start is heartbreaking. He knew how important it was for his band mates … such a true friend during such a difficult time for himself and his family.
Who is watching this during the lockdown 2020? This song was perfect for the closing ceremony! Long live Take That! Gary was so strong! I admire him! Take That is the best boyband from all the times!
Props to Gary! I wonder how hard it might have been for him. Standing there while his soul was somewhere else. Such an epic and unique moment that would have meant a lot for any performer, still it's so sad he didn't have the chance to enjoy it. He deserves all the best!
I'm Canadian and I became obsessed with Girls Aloud around September 2012 so that's when I started to become familiar with other British artists such as Take That. Let me just say Britain has some of the best musical artists that most of the world hasn't even heard of and that makes me sad.
LoveChezzabella I realise its a bit late this comment being 4 months old, but for perspective, last year (2014) British artists accounted for 50% of all music sales world wide. This is one of the reasons so many, especially American artists, eye musical success in the UK despite the fact our population is only slightly bigger than the combined pop of California and Texas (the two most populous US states).
I'm not British but most of the legendary bands and singers are British.. some of the best artist worldwide like Queen are legends in the whole world it doesn't mean it has to be popular in USA as at some point they were and even Michael Jackson used to see their shows . The thing is when you are not from USA or Britain and you like music in English language then we know know better who is international and who are the best from any corner as we are not focused on Justin biebers or mileys circus hahaha
+LoveChezzabella I am Brazilian. I think the UK artists are the best in the world. Ever. Is in history, music, lyrics, groups and individuals. Take That is one of my favorite UK of all time and has a brilliant composer and best of UK Gary Barlow.
This is a fitting tribute to Gary Barlow and his wife's baby whom they lost shortly before this performance...You are a trooper Gary Barlow and very brave . Sorry for your loss. "All the stars are coming out tonight, They're lighting up the sky tonight For you ,For You"
I'm not interested in Olympic Games, but I love watching opening and closing ceremonies. I totally fell in love in British one. Everything was perfect - the way they showed their history and culture, sense of humour, music... just beautifull, funny and very, very British. I wish I could be there and see this show live.
Take That are are of the few artists who were better after their comeback. They transitioned from a boy band with teenage fans, to men with fans of all ages really well. Love this song and love the film Stardust, the book was by my favourite author.
they came back when I was 12 and redefined what a boyband is capable of in my eyes; I've loved watching them grow musically over the last ten years, with the Progress and Progressed era being a real inspirational high point for me
Whenever I need some inspiration I come back to this video - the event, the song, Gary Barlow's performance during grieving, the fireworks, the crazy guitar noodling at the end, the flames almost touching the guys in white at the start....and over it all the Phoenix rising from the ashes.
Knowing how heavy Gary's heart must have been with the loss of their daughter and he still had the courage to preform, shows the absolute brilliance of this man! I admire him greatly and this is just another example of why I do!
Just everytime I watch this even months after the performance, I just want to hug Gary especially in those first few lines when he chokes up. what a brave brave man. so much respect for him, just made the performance that extra more emotional, I know I cried the first time i watched it.
Just looking this up after coming to that point in Gary's book.Sadly almost at the date. Amazing to see Gary find the strength courage and professionalism to perform. I feel a newfound respect for him.
Such a brilliant emotional performance, tears rolling down my face watching this. Perfect performance by all the boys. Gary Barlow is such an inspirational brave man, I have so much love for him.

I remember when I watched this, I was sooo excited to see TT performing this song. I am not British, but I obviously know who they are, it takes some knowledge in music to identify every single tune and artist performing that night. Well done London, amazing closing ceremony.
I love reading about how much people respect Gary for doing this because I always think he never got all the respect he deserved for doing this. He sang for his angle Poppy that night. I love how you can see Mark and Howard watching Gary everytime his voice wobbled. Jason, it makes sense that he wanted to make the most of his last performance with them. Forever a great band x
I think Jason was trying to draw attention off of Gary to ease the pressure on him- the way Jay runs up the runway and then runs back to the others. At the time, nobody knew that would be Jay's last performance with them.
@@deekenny602 I appreciate how all of them were that night. They were all looking out for Gary in there own way. I do wonder if deep down Jason knew or decided that would be the last time preforming with them with them. Years before they always said about leaving on a high note which the Olympics certainly would be a high even with the heartbreaking events x
I love this song so much, every time I watch Stardust I listen to this song in the closing credits. But the live performances are even better! Especially this one, knowing the loss Gary had experienced just a week earlier is heartbreaking. But it made the performance even better and straight from the heart. Gary really meant what he was singing and I think he was singing it to his daughter ♥
Yeah, I believe that he was singing this for her and he still does on his solo tour. Almost every performance I've seen of him singing this song, he points up to the sky. It's so touching.
Can't believe its been a year already - seems like it was yesterday. Had a group of friends round to watch the ceremony and kept telling them Take That wouldn't perform after everything Gary had been through that week, but then suddenly I heard the music and I jumped up with joy - Take That were there! But then Gary started to sing (beautifully as usual) and I looked at his face and my heart broke for him. Bless him. What a brave, brave man. Love him so much and so proud of him and Take That!

This is exactly why I'm proud to be British! Take That will always be amazing, they always put on a great show! I was so proud of Gary when he came out with the boys, it must have been really hard for him -3
I have just found Gary. I am so glad to have done so. What amazes me is that on all of the Take That songs, you hear his voice. A lot of singers in groups you hear them all. But you can hear his voice beautifully. Amazing. Thank you.
I’m so so sorry to Gary and partner on your loss 😢 all my heart goes out to you both. And Gary? She’s a star in the sky just like her daddy😊 amazing performance 😊

You could tell that in Gary's eyes he was dedicating every line of that song to Poppy. It takes a great deal of bravery to go and sing after what he went through at that time and to sing so beautifully too. Well done, Gary, you and your band mates did justice to that song.
We were all v proud of Gary for getting up to do this. Everyone would've understood if he'd pulled out. So sweet the way Jason and Mark look at him as if to say 'It's okay mate, we've got your back.'

What a song, what a group and what an ending. Fabulous
it is this stuff that makes me and the rest of the country proud to be British
Like 60% of the people living here aren't British...

Ah yes, a Daily Mail reader I see. Don't let facts get in the way of a good 'immigrants are taking over the country' rant!
I have never touched the daily mail because I'm 13.

Lol, sorry, I wasn't talking to you, don't worry.
tia watson Trust me. Never actually touch it. It's more use as toilet paper than something like a newspaper.
Gary Barlow was such a pro, a great man braved his tears of losing his baby girl. He indeed ruled the world that night. I salute him and his courage.
Watching and listening to Gary here is heart-breaking. His voice make you feel heaven on earth.
I am not british..i am from Kenya (Africa) but i love Take That...They sing to the fullest. God...!!! What a performance

This gives me goosebumps everytime I listen. You can see the pain in Gary's eyeals
I don't understand how Gary didn't start crying during this performance. He's so brave, bless him 🥺
You could tell that in Gary's eyes he was dedicating every line of that song to Poppy.
The crack in Gary's voice at 2:00 just breaks my heart cried watching this performance nowing what Gary had just gone through. You can tell Gary didn't want to be there one bit, when done Gary so brave to do that. ❤️
What happened to him?
+Karel N his daughter Poppy had been delivered stillborn a few days before the show
August 2020. Writing from Canada. This closing ceremony is the gold standard. This song and the story around it. The incredible dancers. And The Who in vintage form. All of this and the people and the pyrotechnics it was a glorious ending...
the words of the song line up perfect with what he was going through. heartbreaking but brilliant too.
The United Kingdom has produced so many great artists .... Breathtaking perfomance!
