    I can't explain how jealous I am watching these. I'm from Ireland, the country is 175 miles wide. One days stage for you would have you cross the country, drive back, and half way back again, on this island.
    I have the Forza 125, and struggles a little on the hills, but it is perfect for just about every where else.

    That was one of the most engaging UA-cam videos I’ve ever seen. I was utterly wrapped up in the problem solving, tiredness and the sheer effort involved in long distance biking (scootering?) You’ve an excellent attitude to the hassles that life throws at you. I’ve been a fully paid up member of the Distance Biker Society for more years than I care to admit to and there’s been many times when I’ve muttered “Why am I doing this again?) If you’ve been there…….you know that feeling.

    Oh my, what a ride. Can't believe you did all that just to keep the content compelling 🤣. I definitely watched every minute... hoping you'd make it (and I already knew what happened).
    Seriously though, as a video hobbiest, I just wanted to give you props for all the details you put into your production edits. All the on screen telemetry, swirling still photo projections to the screen, picture in picture from multiple cameras, arrows and markers pointing to stuff you're about to ride past without seeing in the moment, exercise in futility tracker 😂, duck quacks for all the Quasi after dark comments, and dad jokes (a "deer miss" - I see what you did there)... most people don't realize how much time and energy it takes to do that stuff, but I see you. Well done! Looking forward to watching the car rides video tomorrow.

      Video editing is a time vampire, and these episodes consume a LOT of time to produce (about 30-40 hours each). Most video consumers don't realize how much effort goes into production, nor the preparation behind the scenes... equipment selection, camera angles, audio normalization, color grading, etc, etc, etc. I never considered those factors before I started creating content, so it was a real eye opener for me. Luckily, I don't do scripted content, so I never need to act, memorize lines, or do multiple takes. Stream of consciousness (diarrhea of the brain) is my preferred method. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    The PCX is an absolute work Horse but I never thought it would develop such wear on the variometer from that pin, I have about 30,000k on mine (125cc) and still going strong. Changed two belts and two weight sets on the variometer.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому +2

      Agreed! It's unusual to have these problems with Honda scooters. The OEM torque drive assembly (rear pulleys, clutch, etc) were suspect and likely faulty since this scooter was new. I was unable to correctly diagnose the problem until after the failures in Day 3 (this video). I had always attributed the problems to the aftermarket Dr.Pulley performance variator, but that part wasn't (completely) to blame.
      I limped the scooter to the finish for that evening and then inspected it more carefully on the morning of Day 4. That's when I realized that the OEM torque unit had seized and wasn't compressing properly. Remember that in a CVT, the belt diameter is constant, so the front and rear pulleys must expand and contract in unison. If the rear pulleys don't spread and allow the CVT belt to sink to a lower diameter, then the front variator pulley will be fighting against the centrifugal pressure of the variator weights. That causes excessive belt stress (stretch) and heat build up, so it's only a matter of time before it fails.
      That also explains the aluminum galling and destruction at the inner hub of the movable and fixed drive faces of the variator. The galling was created by the drive boss due to slippage and heat from belt friction... essentially friction welding. The destruction of the variator bushing was also caused by belt slippage and angular torque from the excessive belt tension. Hindsight is 20/20.
      I trailered the scooter for Days 4-5, and then replaced the entire CVT assembly with fresh OEM Honda parts on the evening of Day 5. You can watch that video here for more details: ua-cam.com/video/QYGxmPR2Cdk/v-deo.html . Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    You want my advice. Buy any of the following models. Vespa Px, p or sprint veloce. You want 200 motor. Tune it with malossi or quattrini. Extend gears. With quattrini m244 or bigger. You will sit on free way doing 120kmh day and night. I have p172 quattrini and it does 80kmh up any hill 2up and slowly picking up speed if I have to 130kgs. I have px200 malossi. Tune before did 145kmh uphill down hill GPS. 1up 65kgs. You have to do proper build for top reliability. Imagine power of quattrini m260 😮. You can actually build tour bomber for the open road. The technology is so advanced. Check it out. There 306cc and 407cc.

    @RideWithAlex 3 місяці тому +1

    With all my years of experience with scooters I've come to the conclusion if you want reliability on long distance trips you have to stick to he OEM stuff, especially in CVT parts. Also a bit of advice when you mount your variator put a very very small amount of grease on the drive boss (but very little just a slim coating) that will prevent the brass bushing of the variator from wearing down so quickly. My stock variator was good for 25.000 miles before at the last belt change I forgot to grease the boss and ruined the variator in 2000 miles.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  3 місяці тому

      Honda's shop manual calls for dry assembly (no grease), but that's for the OEM components. The Dr.Pulley performance variator survived 11K brutal miles (17.7K km's) in this PCX before it gave up the first time, then a second (new) one died in just 500 miles, so I think it was the rear torque drive assembly that was stressing it too much. I reverted to all OEM components on Day 6 ( ua-cam.com/video/ZJQ_h4F-hE4/v-deo.html ), and I didn't suffer any more failures. My top speed was back to only 62-63 mph (100 km/h) before hitting the factory rev-limiter, but that was better than sitting on the side of the road with a blown CVT again! 🤣👍 --QM

    • @RideWithAlex
      @RideWithAlex 3 місяці тому +1

      @@QuasiMotard Yea watching the end of day 5 as we speak, surprised the torque drive lost it's grease. I'm on 45.000km (28.000 miles) with my scoot and the rear drive is original, only changed out a needle bearing because it was noisy. And I also pushed it to it's limits many times, I guess it's the luck of the draw.

      The rear torque drive assembly (clutch pulleys and spring) were faulty in this scoot... probably since it was new (it always shuddered at start-up and low speeds). The failing torque drive and high speeds caused several belts to overheat and fail during this trip. Normally, these are extremely reliable scooters, so my issues seem to be the exception case. I'm abusing this machine and subjecting it to brutal torture, so I can't fault it too much. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      Greetings from the USA! For extended touring on any scooter, I recommend taking at least one spare CVT belt, a spare set of roller weights, and ALL of the tools required to change the CVT on the road. Don't forget to include the typical road kits for flat tire repairs and basic first aid.
      Your 2T requires 2-stroke oil, so it's wise to carry an extra spark plug in case of oil fouling. It's also a good idea to run your fuel-oil mixture rich to prevent piston seizure during extended high-speed operation. If your scooter has automatic oil injection, then you can manually add a bit of oil to the fuel tank to richen the mixture. Good luck, and happy touring! 😉👍 --QM

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому

      @@jonaubuchon1040Yes, at least partially. The OEM torque drive was failing and not expanding enough to prevent stress on the CVT belt and variator. The belt wasn't able to drop to the lowest point of the rear pulleys, so that caused excess heat and stress on the belt. Remember that the belt diameter in a CVT must remain constant; as the front pulleys push the belt upward to a larger diameter, the rear pulleys must expand to a smaller effective diameter. I believe that's what killed the Dr.Pulley variators and CVT belts.
      After I reverted to all OEM components (and a new torque drive), I didn't experience any more failures. I was limted to the original 62-63 mph top speed again (vs 74+ mph with the aftermarket parts), but at least it was reliable again. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      Howdy, and thanks for the feedback! I generated those older HUD overlays with the GoPro Quik software, which was very buggy. I eventually upgraded to a third-party program that works a lot better. This recent video uses the newer program to generate the overlay video.
      The telemetry data for the HUD is recorded by my GoPro Hero11 camera and my Garmin Zumo GPS. The gauge overlay is generated using a third-party program called Telemetry Extractor: goprotelemetryextractor.com/ . I stitch everything together with Adobe Premiere Pro to create the final videos. Creating the overlays is a lot of extra work, but I think the end results are worth the effort.

      I'll try to do a write-up on the full travel load-out when I do the remediation of the PCX150. That should be coming up in the next couple of months when I can find time (and money) to go through it.
      The spare fuel solution was a 2.5-gallon No-Spill gas can mounted on a cheap Chinese tunnel rack that I found on Ebay. The rack quality is absolute junk, so I don't recommend it. There are better quality racks on the market for similar prices. I suggest shopping on Webike Japan ( japan.webike.net ) as a starting point.
      My luggage solution consisted of two main components:

    hey man living this years run. but can i make a suggestion? If you can find one for a pcx... invest in a few kevlar belts, most modded and maxed out scoots use them so the belts dont break as easy. i use them myself and my current one has lasted a good 6000 miles so far.

      The reason for my PCX's belt eating disorder became evident on Day 3 and it was fully diagnosed in the next episode: ua-cam.com/video/QYGxmPR2Cdk/v-deo.html . The OEM torque drive assembly was failing, so it wasn't expanding and allowing the belt to drop down into the pulleys; while the front variator ramps were trying to force the belt upward, the belt was being stretched instead of maintaining a constant circumference. That malfunction created a LOT of belt heat and stress, and it also accelerated the wear of the variator bushing. Hindsight is 20/20! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    How many miles on the Pcx? Plus you’ve changed weight etc?

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому

      My PCX had 12345 miles on it at this point, and about 15000 miles when I returned home to Houston, TX. I upgraded the CVT with a Dr.Pulley performance variator and slider weights when it had about 500 miles, so that variator survived over 10K miles.
      The rear torque drive assembly (original Honda part) had always given me problems since it was new, but I wasn't able to diagnose it properly until after it failed enough to repeatedly eat belts and variators. In retrospect, it would have been a relatively easy fix if I had known where to look. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Do you have a recommendation on your aftermarket cvt? Price? Reliability?

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому +3

      The Dr.Pulley performance variator kit with 12g sliders (~$150 USD) performed very well for its first 10K miles, but it wasn't up to the abuse of the Cannonball and the sustained high-speed riding. The rear torque drive was faulty in my scooter, so I don't know which part caused the other to fail.
      OEM parts are almost always going to be more reliable even if they don't perform as well (e.g., increased speeds or acceleration). My recommendation would be to stick with the Honda OEM parts and only upgrade the original variator with Dr.Pulley 12g or 13g slider weights (only ~$30 USD). That gives a modest bump in top speed and efficiency without sacrificing reliability in the rest of the CVT system. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому

      The entire route with all of the points is predetermined before the beginning of the event. Our route book has pictures and names for all of the locations.
      However, sometimes the businesses have changed names or landmarks have moved slightly since those points were chosen (usually done by Google searches). We had a couple of those instances on the 23 Cannonball... one was a sign that moved across the intersection and another was a fuel station that was rebranded from Shell to Marathon. 🤷‍♂️😉👍 --QM

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому

      The secondary windscreen (laminar lip) was necessary to reduce helmet turbulence for the video recordings. Without that top spoiler, helmet audio is severely compromised and I wouldn't be able to share the adventure. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes planning and testing/prep to make these videos. 😉 --QM

      The telemetry data for the HUD is recorded by my GoPro Hero11 camera and my Garmin Zumo GPS. The gauge overlay is generated using a third-party program called Telemetry Extractor: goprotelemetryextractor.com/
      I stitch everything together with Adobe Premiere Pro to create the final videos. Creating the overlays is a lot of extra work, but I think the end results are worth the effort. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Hindsight is 20/20 but it seems you have way less problems on the old design honda super cub than this honda PCX? ...Ride with ALEX anouther scooter you tuber that tours . ... Tours long distance 1000 to 4000 miles one way on a SYM 125 or 200 . BUT he has much LESS Problems . The SYM 200 has taiwanese honda clone gy6 engine but its much more reliable than the honda PCX scooter. If honda doesnt sponsor you its time to change brands ..... HOnda is NOT reliable as they where in 1980s 1990s

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  7 місяців тому

      Yep, hindsight is always 20/20. If I had known the OEM Honda torque drive was failing, then I could have resolved that issue before I started this adventure. That original torque drive had given me problems for several years (slow or partial failure), but I wasn't able to correctly diagnose the issue until it completely failed.
      The rear pulleys were binding and not allowing the belt to shift up/down properly in the front variator ramps. CVT belt diameter must remain constant. As the front variator ramps compress and push the belt upward, the rear ramps must expand to allow the belt to drop lower. The rear pulleys weren't expanding fully, so that placed too much stress on the belts and the variator's center bushing. That also explains why the variator bushing exhibited uneven wear... tapered with much more loss toward the engine side opposite of the belt face.
      Otherwise, these PCX's are known to be nearly bulletproof in terms of reliability and racking up lots of miles. Several of the ADV150's in the 2021 and 2023 Cannonball events never experienced any failures during the ride. I haven't heard of any mechanical failures on these scooters other than burning through belts faster than anticipated.
      CVT belts are always the weak link in any scooter powertrain, so the only option is to be prepared with spare belts and the tools to swap them as needed. Aftermarket parts are wildcards that are better left unturned... stick with OEM parts for the best reliability. 😉👍 --QM

      The weight capacity of the PCX150 is 355 pounds (161 kg). My riding weight is 170 lbs, and the extra equipment was under 70 lbs, so my total load was under 240 lbs... far below the capacity of the machine.
      However, we are certainly pushing them outside of their intended use cases with these cross-country trips. That's the fun and the challenge of the Scooter Cannonball! --QM

      @@QuasiMotard I can't believe how negative some of the comments are. The whole point of Cannonball is to test human and mechanical resources to the limit, and stay smiling. If it was about common sense a BMW GS would be a good option, or better yet a big RV. Safer still would be to sit at home in an armchair. Greetings from the UK, it looks like a fun ride.
