700 miles in one day...that's a lot, Quasi !
These are the videos that make me want to ride. Today was christmas for me, picked up my ADV 160. First impressions, I absolutely love riding this thing. Took at the back roads home had some fun on some twists and turns. I think the fastest I hit on the ride was 55 on the first trip. Thank you for the videos you put out, it gave me the bug to get on two wheels again. And honestly I really like the scooter over the motorcycle right now. But I saw a trail 125 at the dealership and was like ooooo that looks like it would be fun too.
Bought myself an ADV 160 Aug. 3rd. Love it. Conversation starter.
And so it begins! Looking forward to another year of Scooter Cannonball videos.
Wow, 700 miles in one day is hard in a car, so I can imagine how tired you were after doing it on a scooter! I always look forward to your videos! Safe travels to you, always!
Thanks for the feedback and support, Terry! I'll have more Cannonball videos edited and published soon! 😉👍 --QM
I drove my GL1800 from Vancouver BC Canada to Thunderbay Ontario approximately 1870. miles no-rest slept 4hrs in wal-mart parking lot . and drove to Sault Ste Marie. Ont. Another 438 miles camped at a KOA (very nice)
And Ottawa the next day 500 more miles .
A total of over 2800 miles
In about 55 hours. My Ironbutt ride. I was running out of my cheap gov. Inslun, had to get home . I drove in smoke from BC fires for over 1000 miles . ✌
this made me FEEL like i was actually making the drive, but i imagine the video doesn't do it justice. amazing watch as always man!
would love to do this one day once i get all the gear
I’ve done San Antonio to Roswell several times on a bike, about 525 miles, and even on a BMW I’ve usually been ready to get off the bike at Roswell given the winds and heat of West Texas and NM. I can’t imagine doing 700 miles under those conditions in a 150cc scooter. Tip of the hat to you Sir.
I wish Honda would make a pcx in a 200-250 that would be amazing 🤩 then the wind wouldn’t be so bad
Agreed! I'm still holding my breath to see if Honda decodes to import the ADV350 into the States. It's a long shot, but that would be a perfect middle weight scooter for commuting and touring! 😉👍 --QM
@QuasiMotard do u use earplugs when u ride long distance, I noticed u have the windshield extension, which I know works well for me, not good looking but does the task?
Thanks for the beginning of a fun adventure that tested you and your PCX! I’m looking forward to the whole adventure. 😊
Thank you again for awesome videos on the first day of Scooter Cannonball Run! Mr Aaron 🍻🍺
Another great one! It's good to have friends that can come o the rescue.
Thanks for the feedback, Hank! You've got that right... they are the best roadside support you can get! 👏😉👍 --QM
I love the duck sounds lol and I understand those winds on those little bitty tires of the pcx, wish they were alittle bit wider
36 is a great road. Take it northwest to Abilene then take 83 all the way to Canada. Fantastic drive across the very heart of the country with nice municipal golf courses and reasonable hotels all the way, not to mention friendly folks and fantastic local sights and restaurants.
Man, that would be a great ride... all the way up to Canada! Maybe I'll put that on my future trip list and motocamp the whole way up there. 😉👍 --QM
Neil did great work on the mount, he should start a business in custom work.😁
Moving back to Georgia from California on my kymco like 200. I'm tired of people telling me I can't do it and happy to see a video like this! Keep it up man!
The head and crosscwinds are BRUTAL crossingbthe mid and southwest! I rode out Route 66 a couple years ago on a Honda Helix CN250 and got taken by surprise by the high, incessant winds. Didn’t help matters that it was carb’d and NOT jetted for altitude. Gasped for air in the Rockies though and needed a lot of maintenance to recover the power after we got home!
I have made that journey from Roswell to Houston I was born in Houston cousins aunts and uncle‘s live there I live in Roswell New Mexico now lotta fun missing riding. Kudos to you safe travels.
Nice! Looking forward to the rest of the episodes. And looking forward to Quasimotard maybe one day making the decision to move to the Carolinas. 😅 Charlotte's waiting for ya
Man i hope you get there safely. 25:48
I love Buc-ees blue gas and their brisket sammich
I used to live in NM. Those winds are Common during certain months. It is not unusual to see roofing tiles flying off daily
Just watched from the uk. Loved your trip and its inspired me to do some touring on the 400 burghman i have just got. Many thanks Neil.
2 more years for me to do the cannonball... My PCX will have 35K+ miles by then. I won't have to worry about the desert heat at least.
You are so amazing. 700 miles on the scooter 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have been following your Cannonball runs for the past few years. This is so on my ‘bucket list’ to attempt.
No matter if you win, lose, or fail... it's an adventure you won't forget! 😉👍 --QM
@QuasiMotard how do u sit on that small seat and a 150 pcx for 700 miles in one day? Crazy
@@jasontomica8938 Two words: GLUTEAL FORTITUDE! 🤣👍 --QM
I’ve done Roswell to San Diego many times. Only on an 1100 not a scooter. Usually takes me about fourteen hours if I don’t push it. During the pandemic I made much better time.😊😊😊😊
Just got back from a 6 days trip to Katy Tx.. it was Very Hot but then again its hot everywhere in Tx, Stop at Iron supply cycle shop, cycle gear & NL Brewery for a few Cold one's, rode my Forza 300 Awesome ride there & back to Waco

Hell yeah entertainment at work. I'm so excited to see it and watch it.
Awwwww maaaan i was hoping you could got some gas
I wanted to make this comment about the variatior. I saw a UA-cam video on changing the final transmission gears. The output shaft is 20% up and the idler gear is 5% up. So. you change them both it would be 25%. (All these numbers are approximate) You could change these gears and leave the variatior stock, as it seems so many problems came from the variator. However the job to replace the gears is much more involved than replacing the variator.
Seems like you need a bigger cc engine when cross country traveling. Some sources argue 250 - 300 cc size liquid cool engine!
The Scooter Cannonball is an exercise in minimalism... to attempt the ridiculous (or impossible) with the smallest machines possible. The maximum displacement was 279cc (now upgraded to 300cc), so it's a challenge. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
Man I wish I could get a scooter just to get up at 5 in the morning ride and ride. Lol 9:35
Do it! You can find good quality used scooters for under $2500 all the time. I'm partial to Honda and Yamaha scooters because of their reliability and parts availability. 😉👍 --QM
@QuasiMotard if I have any issues finding one I'll just hit you up
Quasi thank you so much for the video. I know was a lot of work!
Thanks for the feedback and support, Alejandro! Editing and distilling these videos down from 30+ hours of raw footage (3 cameras of 10+ hours each) into digestible 30-minute chunks is definitely a time vampire. Occasionally, if I'm lucky, I'll find a rhythm that's a good compromise between fast-paced action and "boring" ride footage. The trick is keeping continuity between the huge time chunks of video that hit the cutting room floor! 🤣
Stay tuned for more Cannonball videos coming soon! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
On the rooooaaaad again. Awesome.
Omg Quasi 700 miles to Rosewell in one day on a scooter good job!
Hey man, how you doing, I see what you did with your white Honda well your new gear and all your electronics I like what you do with it I don’t have a scooter now, but I’m saving my money on one and so far I’m loving what you do with it special all your electronics and my son involved in one of these things you know I see we both go on a trip to some bonding together and do some camping, and another thing I want to tell like Bruce Willis would say you watch it till out there cowboy and be safe. May God bless you always amen.
Hello, Luis, and thanks for watching and leaving feedback! I will be editing and publishing more of these Scooter Cannonball videos very soon. You can find lots more scooter touring videos on my channel. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
14:20 truer words for our region of Texas have never been spoken.

💯 Thanks so much for the support! I'll be posting more Cannonball videos very soon! 👊😉👍 --QM
Love the new camera angles
Very cool trip
I had a Honda Helix and it was a dream to ride the gas mileage was heaven ! But I needed something a little bigger so I went with a 650cc for those long trips !
Should have kept that Honda so amazingly easy to ride long hours with all the wind protection !
The Honda Helix 250 is a fantastic, low-stress scooter. I owned two of them in the past, and I've always regretted selling them. 😉👍 --QM
I was just thinking about taking my BMW K1200 from N.E Indiana to Dallas ,Tx 🎉
The PCX has proved itself a worthy machine. 👍
Agreed! The CVT failures that I experienced were partly due to a faulty OEM torque drive, but mostly the Dr.Pulley performance variator. At least two of those Dr.P variators failed on PCX's this year, so I don't recommend them for long-distance abuse. 😉👍 --QM
That's some insane wind
Another great video!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! There are more episodes coming soon, so stay tuned! 😉👍 --QM
Woot. The saga begins...
Great camera, comments and graphics! Quasi you know how to do it right. ? do you think the wind caused your variator issues? Looking forward to the rest of the adventure
It takes a special kind of person to run out of fuel while carrying a 2.5 gallon gas can 🤣🤣🤣
🤣 LOL... right?! That's short bus kind of "special"! 🤣👍 --QM
Scooter lover here.❤from Philippines 😆✌️👍🍻🛵
I think you picked great music for this vid. Loved it
Thanks for the feedback! I'm always reluctant to add music to these ride videos, but it certainly gives an extra dimension to the video than just road noise. Finding tracks to match the mood and tempo of the ride takes a lot of research, so that can add significantly to the production times. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
You have massive endurance to ride in some of these conditions for so many hours. I don't see how you do it
Two words: GLUTEAL FORTITUDE! 🤣👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard lol
Great video! It is a shame that the mighty PCX didn’t turn out to be as bulletproof as we were hoping. It would be great to see a wrap-up of what failed and whether it was stock Honda parts, or aftermarket parts that caused you problems.
Agreed! It was a combination of both OEM and aftermarket parts that proved to be faulty. I'll give my diagnosis as the adventure unfolds on video. The OEM torque drive assembly (driven pulley, clutch, etc) has been suspect since the scooter was new, and that was a good portion of the problem.
The Dr.Pulley performance variator did NOT withstand the abuse of Cannonball. I confirmed that at least two of them failed: one on my PCX150 and the other on John's PCX160. They both failed in identical fashion as the center bushing wallowed-out, which permitted the movable face to chatter/wobble on the drive boss. That chatter caused rapid failures of the movable face and shredded CVT belts due to belt slippage, twisting, and overheating.
I'm planning to do a full post-mortem and remediation of the PCX in the near future. It's still sitting patiently for me to do the teardown video and then I'll order the replacement parts that I broke or burned out during the trip. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard Hondas are not what they used to be back in the 1980s/1990s
west side of Brownfields is a economy inn, great people ( Motorcyclists ) owners
Hello Quasi & People: I'm a newbie. Why this scooter? Are there other scooters that are good for touring? How many miles did this scooter run in total? Average yearly cost? Which brand/model is the trailer? How much did it cost? Is it compatible with Honda PCX 150 or only models/brands?
Howdy! The Scooter Cannonball is an endurance challenge for scooters (and qualifying small motorcycles) under 300 cc's. My scoot for this year was a 2015 Honda PCX150; it's known to be a very reliable machine, but it's not designed for touring. I started this trip with ~9600 miles on the clock, and it finished with ~15K miles. Operating costs for these scooters are minimal, and it usually gets around 100 MPG!
Better long-distance scooters are in the 300+ cc category, such as the Honda Forza 300, Yamaha XMAX 300, Suzuki Burgman 400, Honda SilverWing 600, etc. Those larger "maxi-scooters" offer more power and stability for long-haul comfort.
The trailer on Neil's silver Yamaha SMAX 155 is a custom-fabricated creation. Neil is a mad scientist fabricator and welder, so he builds all of his own accessories for scooter touring. The mounts for that trailer are also custom pieces, so it's not directly compatible with any other scooters (although Neil could certainly fabricate something). Cheers, and let us know if you have any other questions! 😉👍 --QM
Doing this in the summer is insanity
Agreed! Just wait for the upcoming episodes where I was stranded in the Mojave Desert and in the high plains with blown CVT belts... those really sucked! 🤣👍 --QM
Your best fuel mileage will be leading the throttle off about 15° from wide-open in Top Gear. That is when you will have the highest vacuum.
The pcx is a good scooter but it's underpowered for the open road a 250 or higher will get you down the road a little better
Agreed, but that wasn't the objective for this ride. The Scooter Cannonball Run is an exercise in the ridiculous. It's an endurance event where the smaller/older scoots have better points handicap in scoring. I have plenty of larger/faster motorcycles and scooters, but these small-bore adventures are more challenging! 😉👍 --QM
What aftermarket parts r u using to get the higher top-end speed? Is this the same set-up u had b4 that kept braking belts? 😅
I’m in Beaumont tx & I sometimes ride my PCX 150 to Houston & Galveston.
This PCX150 has the Dr.Pulley perfomance variator and 13-gram sliders in it. That setup was reliable for nearly 10K miles, but the Cannonball finally killed the variator flying across the Mojave Desert on Day 1 of the Run: ua-cam.com/video/SCbcQmjkNCE/v-deo.html . I limped along with it for 2 more days after that until I realized that the variator was causing the CVT belts to fail. I'll have more Scooter Cannonball videos coming soon! 😉👍 --QM
Hi. You´re becoming my hero, doing those trips with the PCX (which I don´t have but it´s in my bucket list). How many miles do you do with one tank? Greetings from Argentina
I just upgraded my PCX to the Garmin 396 Zumo. Have you had any issues using their app to connect to your phone? The comments on the app store aren't kind.
Yeah, the Gramin Smartphone Link app is just "meh". I eventually abandoned the app and just connected via Bluetooth for voice/directions whenever I wasn't using Google Maps or Waze on my phone. Otherwise, the Zumo 396 works great! 😉👍 --QM
It doesn’t matter how much you water, that dirt it’s not going to grow
Great videos! What happened to the cub?
Thanks for the feedback! The Super Cub still lives in my stable... it'll probably never need a new home. I still ride it occasionally for relaxed back road touring and the occasional road trip.
I haven't been riding it too much lately because I need to open the engine and inspect the timing chain tensioner and idler wheel. These little 125's are known to whittle down the timing idler wheel after about 15K hard miles, which can cause premature engine failure. My Cub is still running fine, but the top end sounds a little bit noisy. Adrian's Cub (now my second one) is much rougher... it's down on power and doesn't sound healthy at all.
So, I'll tear into that one first to see how badly worn it is. I might upgrade it with a mild big-bore kit (143cc with the PCX150 fuel injector) to see how that performs. After I know what to expect, then I'll dig into my Cub's engine to refresh it. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard Yeah I bet things can wear down a bit putting hard miles on that motor. I've known people who rode them when I was stationed in Japan back in the day. They were pretty reliable bikes and lasted a while but none of them towed a trailer across the United States on theirs lol. looks like the PCX150 worked out for the most part. Well man I enjoyed watching your vids. You do a great job on them. Ride Safe!
Should of filled gas in Tatum,NM.
Agreed! I called Neil and Mike to let them know that I screwed up before it even happened. There is NOTHING on that stretch of Hwy 380 for a long time. When I started fighting those brutal headwinds, I quickly realized that I wasn't gonna make it! 🤣👍 --QM
Why do you carry extra fuel ? Makes sense ? Is there no gas stations in the U.S within 160 miles to tank ?
Yes, there are some locations, like the end of this video, where there aren't any fuel stations for 100 miles. So, if you aren't familiar with those highways and miss the last station, then you can become stranded. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard Thanks for quick answer. I am still watching. Greetings from Poland from Yamaha NMax 125 owner :)

Hey man, how do maintain chin mount in place in hot weather?
Mine keeps falling (adhesive fails) the 2nd time it gets exposed to sunlight and heat.
Great question! I've had very good luck with this particular mount ( SUREWO Aluminum Helmet Chin Mount: amzn.to/4780Bq9 ). It comes with a heavy-duty 3M VHB adhesive pad on the mount that hasn't failed me yet.
I cleaned the helmet surface with alcohol before I mounted the adhesive pad so it securely bond with the surface. I used a C-clamp to maintain high pressure (10-15kg force) on the bracket for about 5 minutes to be sure that it was cured in place. So far, it hasn't failed in the past 12+ months... even after a 35 mph ( 56 km/h) chin bounce on gravel! ua-cam.com/video/hfuUZxYjI4Y/v-deo.html
The only complaint that I have with this mount is that the anodizing isn't very robust. It started as a satin-black color, but the sun exposure has bleached it out to a bronze/gold color now after about a year of constant use. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
after watching some of your videos, and having your belts brake, (question) can the final drive be changed to a chain?
Not easily (or at all). The variable front and rear pulleys in the CVT transmission allow the v-belt to slide up/down to create infinite drive (gear) ratios. Replacing the belt with a chain would also require some kind of transmission to replace those pulleys to provide variable ratios.
I've mused on that topic during several of my Scooter road trips. It would be interesting to replace the entire CVT with a 4- or 5-speed transmission and a centrifugal clutch, similar to how the Honda Super Cub operates. The direct-coupled transmission and chain drive would gain reliability and reduce driveline losses from the heat & friction in the v-belt design. The obvious downsides are added weight and complexity. 🤔 --QM
So what are you going to be riding on next year’s cannonball run?
I still haven't decided which steed I'll be riding for the 2025 SCBR. If I don't buy a new scoot for the event, then I'll decide between the Super Cub (again), CT125, or the PCX150 (again). The Navi is still rattling around in the back of my brain, but the speed & fuel logistics for that might be too much to manage. 😉👍 --QM
should have turned that spare tank around with the spout on the high side...just sayin
🤣 Dang, you're spoling my fun! I figured that out a couple of days later when I had a full tank, and the scoot was leaned over on the side stand. It sat in the sun for a few minutes before the heat expansion made it start dribbling fuel all over the scoot. So, I flipped it around with the spout on the right side for the rest of the trip. 😉👍 --QM
Is there a reason you didn't run your Sherpax?
Howdy, David! I wanted to haul the SherpaX again for this Cannonball, but the timing didn't work out. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to coordinate with Joel at KipMoto to build a new hoop/hitch for the PCX. I'm still hoping to work with KipMoto in the future to build another hoop (or two) for a couple of bikes in the stable. I'd like to have a mount for my Honda SilverWing 600 scooter and also for my Rebel 1100. All of those bikes have easy access to the rear shocks, so it should be easy to tie into those lower mounts for the trailer's draw bar. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
Q..what kind of tire is that packed on your bike??
That's a Michelin City Grip 2 100/90-14 for the rear wheel. I ended up not using it because the first CG2 back tire still looks almost new after the 6000+ mile adventure! 😉👍 --QM
What PCX is that you riding, the 300?
No, this is a 2015 Honda PCX150. We just recently received the PCX160 in the USA, but that's Honda's largest scooter in our market right now. We're hoping for the ADV350 to be imported here, but it's not very likely. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
@@QuasiMotard We also only get the 125 and 150 in ZA. I have the 2013 150. Unfortnately it doesn't seem like we'll get the 300, but I'd wan't the ADV300 too.
I'm slow don't hit me light 3:55 where did you get?
Speed Tech Lights have a great selection of them. Have bought many lights from them in the past.
That is the SpeedTechLights (STL) Z-3 TIR amber: www.speedtechlights.com/LED-Grille-Surface-Mount-Lights/z-3-tir-led-surface-mount-warning-light-head .
It mounts perfectly in the OEM reflector location. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the plastic fender for the wiring bundle and tapped the wires for the license plate light for power. I installed a waterproof push-button switch amzn.to/3qehVsX ) so I can turn it on/off as needed. Cheers! 😉👍

Why ethanol😊 free fuel?
Non-ethanol (E0) fuel is more energy-dense and it usually yields better fuel economy and range. Unfortunately, it costs more and it's not widely available here, so I'm back to refueling with E10 at the next stop. 😒 --QM
@@QuasiMotardinteresting. We have a Bucees here in my area in Florida so non ethanol is available here but I always thought it was only for large lawn mower equipment etc….
@@beachgirl9823 It's good for anything with a carburetor, a fuel injected engine doesn't really need ethanol free gas
Are we supposed to know what scooter this is?
I personally would be happier with a paper map and a cell phone, maximum.
Uhhh... OK. If you're not interested, why watch and leave nasty comments? How about changing the channel?! 🤣👎 --QM
Maxi bikes are not scooters! They are motorcycle wannabes. You may as well be on a real motorcycle… get a Vespa or a Supercub for a real experience!!!
I agree with the Super Cub sentiment (I own one, and I completed the 2021 Scooter Cannonball on one). However, are you calling the PCX150 a "maxi scoot"? 🤔 --QM
And I thought 400km in one day on a 50cc was bad here in Holland. Much respect!🫡
Greetings from the USA! 400 km's on a 50cc is hard work because it's so slow! 👊👍
Our traffic speeds here in the States are so fast and frantic that it's difficult (and dangerous) to ride 50cc scooters on pubilc roadways. I have a 2008 Yamaha C3 (XF50) scooter and a 2022 Honda Navi 110... both of them struggle to keep up with our crazy cagers here in Texas. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM
