A button press = anything physically clickable.
ex. clicking joystick to use special in Splatoon
Not a button press = not physically clickable
ex. moving mouse, or joystick
We are not allowed to change keybinds unless the option is given in-game
We also can't use any controller that wasn't meant for the game

7:56 if you wait long enough mario will release bowser without the need of a button press. same for the other bowser fights, pannen showcased a strat for the final bowser in his video about the B Button Challenge

If you're gonna use TAS, you should go full parallel-universe mode and route the game for TRUE lowest-buttons.
I will watch and if Mario isn’t a sign atleast once I will be sad.
I have some bad news
A button press could be saved by grabbing a Mips star simultaneously to jumping to get to HMC by doing a star dance ledge grab. Also, get everything in HMC you plan to get in 1 trip, since you won’t have to jump to get back in.
The 100 coin star in THI could be done with 5 secrets, saving a button press.
In Bowser in the Sky, an above Chuckya can be manipulated to save a button press at the beginning. This strat is used in the ABC.
Thanks for the help here, I actually haven’t heard of a star dance ledge grab before, so I’d be interested in seeing what that looks like.
@@Ansel_G it’s when you collect a star you can ledgegrab things and get instantly upwarped, you can’t save a button press with it entering HMC tho because it takes multiple dives to get Mips into position
BitS chuckya manipulation requires more inputs

This is actually the first time in my life I heard that you need 2 button presses for bowser. I always used to hold the button and then released it.

I did an RTA 70 run where I only counted A/B/Z presses because there is a category called RTABZ, I did it in 398 ABZ presses and I’ma look in the vid for some things and edit it here if I find some stuff
Edit: honestly seems like you have done a good amount of research, kinda motivating me to beat my PB
In JRB you can get the star in the ship in 2, one for being able to swim and if you do the framewalking first to collect the star you can press Z and break the box and collect the star with 1 Z press
Also after the first star if you press save and quit it saved 1 menu press from having to exit all the 3 textboxes
Also pretty sure you can framewalk onto the ship for the first time but Idk if you can collect the rest of the coins 0xbutton presses then
And yeah you can save 5 with not throwing bowser
I think that’s all the button presses I can quickly think of watching the vid, cool that you made a vid of it. Might try and beat my score today

7:25 this moment was the first major hurdle for the A-Button Challenge
You can get up the final slope of Bowser in the Dark World by grinding on the side of it with a specific angle to travel upward on it. You can see this in action in ivan178’s video of completing the level in 0 A presses RTA
Were you sick when you recorded this? It sounds like you have really bad sinus congestion

an a press is an a press. You can't say its only a half
well lucky for you I counted it as a whole press.
a press isn't completed until the button is released, which is how half a presses happen
I liked this one a bit more than your galaxy video, although I notice you still try to point out an issue with what you are doing and then give an excuse, which feels strange because I personally wasn't considering it. In this video the example was "You may think it's strange to do the stages in this order", which I would either be someone who watched SM64 content and not question it, or you could have also just sequenced the video differently. It's a strange thing to bring up, it feels like you are doubting yourself. Tremendous effort though, keep it up, can you do pikmin with the least amount of pikmin throws?
I haven’t actually played a pikmin game yet, I might try that out though

I could have sworn you could use the left analogue stick to scroll through any textboxes with a triangle at the end, so you'd only have to press a button at the end. Maybe that was a different N64 game? I distinctly remember wiggling the stick to get through a bunch of text and I'm pretty sure it was Mario 64.

It’s stunning how few subscriptions you have considering you’re majority a challenge run channel. Perhaps it would be valuable to do a two player game and collab with a bigger challenge run channel to maximize your visibility without paying for ads

bomb clip is optimally 3 buttons with a weird strat, you grab the bobomb as it's blowing up (no jump, just time it), 1 for throwing it, and one sideflip for grab. great video btw!

Good video, I'm glad to see someone else trying to beat games with the minimum amount of button presses with the help of TAS because I think that shows effort to try to optimize as much as possible (And maybe it's silly what I'm about to say but doesn't the strat called "right side" in Bowser in the sky save some button presses? I haven't given it much thought, so I'm probably wrong)

y'all should check out bismuths a button challenge history videos if you're interested in sm64 with arbitrary button challenges
How about trying the same with Mario 64 DS, but without the usage of the touch screen.
That would be difficult, the touchscreen would be essential to getting a lower score

Noticed around 17:00 that 2 gameplay presses were added for the Dire Dire Dock stars, but you don't need a gameplay press to enter the level. Were those for something else? Not sure if this means there were other instances of this.
only the first star doesn't require an A press to enter iirc, it's definitely possible I made a mistake though
@@Ansel_G Pretty sure you can just walk into the blue shimmer. Yup, I verified it looking at random videos. Took a while to find one, because people tend to jump into it anyways (including my own videos). It reaches the floor. Hazy Maze Cave also wouldn't need a jump to enter cause it is in the floor now that I think about it. Just put in a sub as I've noticed that I've randomly seen a bunch of your videos at this point.

there is a lesser known techniche to clip past the chain chomp with a cork box, which oonly requires you to grab and release it and than jump into the star. this would save 2 button presses, as this could replace a star that requires 5.
oh, that is interesting. I thought the corkbox would have the same effect as the bob omb making it go back to 5

I feel like a 16 star run of this would be optimal. You could probably cut down like 200 button presses. But I get you were playing on 3D all stars
Blj is also really inconsistent with how many jumps you need to get up stairs
on switch online there is normal version of the game that you can blj

You can use hyperspeed shell in BoB to both get on top of the floating island and clip through the chain chomp's gate. This is used in the A Button challenge

it also seems like you forgot about tower of the wing cap. That star is an easy 0 button star
@@blockygamez9389 oh, you’re so right, the wing cap star near ttc would’ve been a great star. Shell doesn’t spawn in bob until you complete stars 1, and 2. Which require like 23 text boxes I’m pretty sure

a lot of button presses can be saved:
examples: grinding can save an 2 presses from the staircase
careful positioned falls to ledge grab (at least one)
grinding for a double jump to save like 2 presses i think on the last bowser stages
the first star in bobomb battlefield can be done in presses due to the fact that you can grind to insta release him
and then kopa the quick would require 1 a press and the box star in bombomb battlefield can be done with 3 presses (2 groundpounds, 1 to get wing cap, 1 to break the box and another one to shoot out of a cannon and i think it can be done with 2 if you can get wing cap without groundpounding) and the clip can be done without pressing a single button, go to the bomb, activate it and make it clip you thru the cage, it is quite hard but it saves 5 presses, also from what i know the quirk box from the beginning can be used to clip thru too, saving 3 presses if you go with that
also grinding is a weird state where mario alterates from being on the ground and being in the air every frame, so you can use it for an instant double jump or just not be effected by the slipperyness of the ground, really important, it is done on the edge
also it is intresting how no pedro spots where used to maybe do some speed thing
a lot of optimizations but it is getting close to TAS levels to do it
think you can also jump on the back and just framewalk the rest of the way and save 1 press
text boxes for BoB 1/2 were the dealbreakers for me.
everything else seems like they would be really good to use and I hope I get to see some sort of full TAS for this challenge at some point.
