    ** New follow up video on planting cacti seeds added 7/7/17: • Video Demo: Starting c... **
    This is a macro video demonstrating how to remove the fruit and harvest the seeds from a cactus (Species is Mammillaria Haageana). This variety does bear edible fruit known as Chilitos, and I did taste it afterwards! A bit underripe, sour, no distinct flavors just yet..but not unpleasant!
    Tools needed include something to cut the fruit and something to scrape out the seeds. Steady hands are ideal so don't attempt this after a strong cup of coffee ;) This was my first time doing this and it was a lot easier than I expected so give it a go yourself!
    I will pot these up and report back as soon as I see any progress. Maybe 2 weeks? Maybe a month? Maybe never? Only one way to find out :D

    I’m hoping to get fruit on my mamms! Did you have to pollinate your flowers to get the fruit? Are they last seasons flowers or the one that’s just bloomed? 😊

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  5 років тому +3

      I didn't pollinate these by hand so something else must've done it :) They were from the previous flowers- about 4 months prior

  • @Koutouhara
    @Koutouhara 4 роки тому +5

    I have a cacti that looks exactly like this but it was labeled mammillaria elegans. I was confused by the flower/fruiting because I saw the fruit first & I thought that was the flowers 😅 Then it bloomed pink flowers not too long ago but hasn't fruited again.
    Is the elegans similar to a haageana?

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  4 роки тому +2

      I was confused by the name too and we have good reason to be! "Mammillaria elegans is a 'nomen confusum' (confused name) also applied to Mammillaria haageana ssp elegans and refers both to Mammillaria geminispina with latex in the stem and to Mammillaria haageana" www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACTI/Family/Cactaceae/13998/Mammillaria_elegans

      Sucs For You! We'll that plant is now dormant so maybe next year. I saved it from lowes. I think it was damaged in shipping and just sitting on the shelf being eaten by gnats. I had to do a really deep cleaning and sanitizing on it. When I cleaned the root ball it was apparent it was ripped from the roots at some point. So a little nub of root was left. I've had it sitting in my closet over 2 weeks now drying. Trying to find pumice in my area is harder then I ever imagined :(

      Sucs For You! My other little cacti I will leave alone from now on. The one drying out is a big mammillaria spinosissima. I say big, it's the biggest I've ever seen for sale up here so had to have it

    • @SucsForYou
      @SucsForYou  6 років тому +1

      Are you sure they were real flowers? Sometimes they glue fake flowers on the cacti ... maybe you know that already :D If you can't find pumice locally, maybe you can find Turface/Porous ceramic soil conditioner... here's a link w/ info on what it is and where you can look for it :)
