  • After your cactus developed a cactus fruit or cactus seed pod, it is now time to collect the seeds. This video will show different methods of extracting the cactus seeds. Depending on the type and stage when the fruit was picked, there can be different techniques that we can use to get the seeds ready for germination.

I tasted the fruit of the wild paddle like cactus that grows in the desert. I had to be careful with my teeth because the seeds were really hard. The fruit was actually pretty good. Glad my brother was the one who got stuck getting them. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

The dragon fruit cactus (purple/red variety) is maybe the best. Seeds are smaller but fruit is sweet.

Awesome harvest, Ana. Quite a few different techniques on obtaining the seeds from the pods itself, how marvelous! 😉😉 It's a much cheaper way but takes an awfully long time but patience is the key. 👍👍👏👏🌵🌵

Hi Molly. I got lucky this year as bees came to visit and help pollinate the flowers. Patience indeed is key. A lot of it. Lol! Thank you for your support Molly. Appreciate it. ☺️☕️☕️

I don't know why I never connected my cactus blooms with seed production! Duh! Will you make a video showing how & what you put the seeds in to germinate. I know you mentioned you use plastic bag method. I'd really like to see the process, how many seeds per container, how long before they sprout, do you water them, etc. So fascinating! Thanks for this video, it really fanned the flame of interest in these unique plants.

Among the seeds that I’ve grown, trichocereus (grandiflora/torch cactus) are the easiest to germinate and grow. Opuntia humifusa also grows fast for me. But it is not the same for all. It depends more on the quality of the seeds and the conditions under which it is grown. Thank you for your encouraging words! 😊

Hello, how much time does a seed need to pop out of the soil and appear?
2- does time vary depending on the type of cactus?
    Thank you for sharing experiences🤗

    • @CactusCaffeine

At a temperature average of 84F, many germinate after 7-10 days, others a little longer. Yes, it depends on the type of cactus. Opuntia seeds which are bigger can take months before they germinate. 🙂

Open the fruit and rub the pulp with seeds on a paper napkin then let dry. It is easier to get the tiny seeds this way.
