It's the little things that make this story great. Soap had a concussion and so could not see clearly. He had a knife in his chest and so was too weak to move effectively. And the game made it clear using that knife was a last, desperate resort. Even afterwards he did not just magically get up and start dancing around.
And in spite of all that effort, general Sheppard still won. All you accomplished was to make sure he did not live to enjoy his victory. If you wait long enough before attacking him, he says so himself, "go ahead, end it. It won't change anything"

Shepherd is a Lt. General. Lt. Generals usually command a single Corps of roughly three divisions. Keeping in mind that 30,000 men is the same size as a single Corps, it would mean that Shepherd's entire corps was annihilated to extinction from that nuke. They were wiped out to the last man.

Y'know, his motivations never made sense to me until the past couple of years. Patriotism has really just gone away, nobody wants to fight for this country because no one is proud of it anymore. Did you know military recruitment is at the lowest point in US history right now? Feels like the exact scenario of MW1 could happen where 30,000 soldiers are wiped out & ppl would just make memes & move on in 2 weeks...especially after the disastrous Afghanistan pull out. Does anyone even talk about that anymore? _13 American Soldiers were blown to bits & did you know there are still Americans trapped there right now?_ *"Tomorrow, there will be no shortage of volunteers, no shortage of patriots. I know you understand..."* I mean, I never saw how someone could go as far as Shepherd did, but now after so many years, I do, _now I understand._ How someone could want to shake this country & slap it back to its senses...& the game takes place in like 2016 too lol so, it was only about 4 years off. Kinda chilling...
Talking about Afganistan...how many russians, ukranians, belorussians, kazakhs, azerbaijans etc gave their lives fighting jihadists in vain because the US wanted to make soviet Vietnam? How many russians then died in Chechnya, fighting jihadists in their country? How many actual people died from all post soviet wars, from Transnistria to Georgia, from Armenia to Donbass and Ukraine, because Soviet Union was replaced by bunch of nationalist olygarchy regimes interested in how to sold more reasources to Europe then their neighbourers (including southern republics, like Azerbaijan, where jihadists movement have an influence and will have more if it)? How many simple american guys fell in Afganistan because Taliban and other terrorist groups became so powerful that even the US, the world hegemon couldn't control it, while the East was robbed turned into chaos by the US and their allies? How many returned and finished their lives? How many would die for influence, oil, weapon sold to american army and other fighting armies? That's normal. Every hegemon, every empire, dies, replaced by another. The question is how many blood will be spilled during that (last time WW1 and WW2 happened before British empire ended up and the US became the "leader of the free world"). And when humanity will finnally understand that peace will come after the last empire will fall.
No one wants fight for this country anymore because they woke up and realized we aren’t fighting for this country, we aren’t fighting our own wars. We’re fighting for you know who and all their congressmen ,their parasites. Why exactly were we lied to and said saddam had wmds? Why did we have to fight Syria? Why will we now have to fight Iran? These aren’t our enemies; you know who’s enemies these are. The people who talk about lack of patriotism will never see the horrors of war but the youth of America today will remember the buzzing of drones for the rest of their lives.
If you understand Shepards motivations then you understand Makarovs, too. They’re one and the same. Evil men doing what they feel they have to, right or wrong.
Shepherd is my favorite as well. A once loyal General who lost all his troops in a nuclear explosion. He no longer was a hero, but a martyr as to what not to do. He was devastated by the loss of his men. He was also disappointed in how his country handled international politics. His men died to stop the ultranationalist party from seizing power but they won anyway. Zakaev became a national hero in Russia and Sheppard became an example in the United States. Instead of fighting to weaken Ultranationalist Russia, his government decided to get involved in pointless unimportant conflicts like Afghanistan. All while him just being a failure in his nations eyes. He sought a change. He knew Makarov detonated the nuke under orders of Zakaev. He was the instrument to Shepards failures. He drew out a plan to not just get revenge on Makarov. But to show the world that he’s not a failure. He wanted to bring America to its knees and then lead it back to glory. He would be a hero once again. History is written by the victors. His truth would be “THE” truth. He would pin it all on Makarov and TF 141 and kill them tying up loose ends being the ultimate hero. His plan was to send private Allen to infiltrate Makarovs inner circle. He helped Makarov organize a terrorist attack on Zakaev international Airport in Russia. And then told Makarov that Allen was an American agent undercover. Sheppard knew Makarov would kill Allen and leave him there. This would put the blame of the terror attack on the US once they saw Allen laying there armed to the teeth. Shepard counted on Russia being enraged to do something stupid and drastic. That stupid act would be a total full on invasion on US soil by Russia. NATO would not interfere since the US was the sole suspect behind the massacre at the Russian Airport and it had no evidence to the contrary. So Russia had a free ticket into America. They had a copy of an ACS module which Shepard anonymously gave to them after TF 141 retrieved it and used it to hack all of the USs radar, and Intel systems allowing Russia to invade with no Resistance. Sheppards plan now was to find and kill makarov and use the intell he found on the way to prove Americas innocence, stop the war and put himself on top as the man who saved the world. And also getting Justice on Makarov for the loss of his men. But to get away with this treachery, he had to tie up loose ends. Once TF 141 completed their mission to retrieve the intell on Makarov, Sheppard ordered Shadow Company, a U.S. Army company completely loyal to Sheppard to kill all of 141 and Makarov tying up loose ends. He killed Roach and Ghost himself. But Price and Soap escaped Shadow company’s onslaught. They consulted “The Enemy of there Enemy…” Makarov to find out where to find Shepard. Makarov tells them Site HB and that he’ll see them in hell. After that, Price and Soap track down Shepard leading to this great scene. You know the rest. Shepard is an awesome Villain indeed.
