Devs decided to nerf Shepherd betrayal as to not give us emotional damage and trauma to the new generation like they did to us in 2009
Edit: How did I get so many likes? The MWII (2022) General Shepard is what realistically can happen in real life and man MWII (2009) Shepard betrayal was one that should be made into a freaking movie

It wouldn’t have been the same. Beyond that his betrayal had little consequences since it’s dealt with during the last 30 minutes of the game. We don’t see the damage shepherd caused, MW3 is all about Makrov. This betrayal will likely have more consequences and more of a story to tell.

@@Epsilon-18 It was only predictable because of the original MW2, as soon as we heard Shepherd's name we knew betrayal was coming. And while the original may've been more impactful to see Shepherd taking matters into his own hands, this story is very well written and it's taking more time between betrayal and hunting Shepherd down

Shepherd portrayed in the first MW2 was more of a leader and less of a politician, that's why when he shot ghost it made sense, his whole personality was "Fine, I will get it done myself" but Shepherd in the new MW2 is more like a political leader, and it's more realistic in todays world. Overall both Shepherds are perfectly portrayed by their character types, it's just a matter of which Shepherd a person likes more. I personally perfer old Shepherd

As much as the new betrayal was incredibly watered down it is a much more realistic scenario. 3 star generals are not on active combat missions. They don’t fly into active war zones and they certainly don’t do there own dirty work. It doesn’t pack the same emotional punch but a corrupt general falling off the map and flying to some remote location while ordering assassinations via a PMC is how that would shake out IRL.

Obviously aside from the fact that we have trust issues with shepard due to the original MW 2, i think a massive difference is that the first betrayal is instant (giving you no time to comprehend what just happened) and out of nowhere where as the 2nd one slowly builds up with a bit of conflict then then the shepard reveal then the shooting. The first one is also good because after a massive fire fight you feel like once you see shepard and all the heli's your safe and can relax but then the complete opposite happens. also no one dies in the second betrayal so who really cares 🤷

The reason that the betrayal in the OG MW2 is more impactful is because Shepard is there the entire time from the start, even does the iconic “helping hand” at the beginning of the game. The new one was obvious because we played the original one, most likely they won’t be killing Shepard in the new trilogy because Laswell is gonna make sure he answers for his crimes cause she’s there to handle the interagency politics while 141 gets to do the bang bang shooty stuff going after Makarov

1: why the hell couldn’t shepherd just tell 141 the truth about the missiles from the beginning and have them work with shadow company the whole way, at least until they started committing straight up war crimes.

Generals also DO NOT have their own "personal" squads that they can just command to do whatever they want. It's pretty ridiculous to have to explain any of this to someone. Again, the new game is far more realistic plot-wise. The general would be back in HQ, commanding an operation. If they were dirty, like Shepherd, they'd use an off the books squad like the group in the new game and command them from HQ, and then run if things went south and they were exposed. Meanwhile MW2's Shepherd was actively plotting and getting things done. Plus they tied his motivations into the events of CoD4 which was really awesome. Nothing ties MW2019 and MWII together outside of featuring the same characters. MW2 Shepherd was also more menacing in general.
I understand that the new MW trilogy wants to be more realistic and tell a story that could happen in the actual modern world... but I feel that has caused it to lose a bit of what made the classic CoD's great - the spectacle. Honestly I can't be the only one that's happy ghost is alive. I was so upset over it, having super soldiers basically killed in the most basic way. My childhood was a cliffhanger and I spent months searching if he lived somehow lol. They literally fixed my life long anxiety and kept him alive, job damn well done. It is pretty cool how the Russians get involved vs. the all out battle royale towards the end of OG MW2

The only issue with keeping him alive is that it’s hard to top him being killed. When he died in MW2 09 you saw him being an absolute badass throughout the campaign, and even in his last mission he’s dragging you to safety refusing to leave you behind, before he’s shot like nothing & you watch his lifeless body be thrown into a pit to be burned. It’s impactful for the same reason him being a badass was, you’d think he would die in extreme combat, not like an animal. Sure Ghost survived NOW, but come on, now the betrayal is barely as impactful.
