I rescued a mama from a parking lot two weeks ago and now I have 132 freshly hatched babies! Thank you so much for your help. I’m excited to see them grow.
I just found a bright orange/red one yesterday and here I am! Thank you so much for this very educational video. I'm intrigued and would like to try this. I had the one I found climb on a small branch and placed it in a box with leaves and twigs. Crossing my fingers!!! I'm over 50 and excited like a child! Thank you again sir!
I've had feedback from viewers telling me some of my videos are too long. MothCycles episodes of 'populair/iconic' species will be cut up into smaller segments too, with some new footage and commentary on top. Don't worry, I will keep making the long videos too to make both groups of people happy (the ones who prefer longer, and those who prefer shorter videos). Don't say that I never listen to fans ;) and enjoy the new format, tell me what you think. It is the result of your feedback! I'll do the same for the hickory horned devil and chinese moon moth soon, and Samia ricini [mostly for all the highly-searched for, populair species]. I will include some new footage and commentary too, and unused footage so that it is not just a total rehash of old footage :)
Great video! I enjoyed it so much! I love Luna Moths. If I leave my porch light on, I find them on my back door in late June. Thanks for the education. Maybe I’ll try to breed some. -Mary in Vermont USA.
I used to collect bugs as a kid and fell out of practice with the hobby when I became ill around age 10 and stopped going outside a lot. I'm entering my late 20s now and have been collecting butterflies and moths recently, but I hate freezing them to death to pin them up and would much rather keep them until they expire naturally. Seeing you keeping bugs makes me hopeful that I can turn this hobby into a massive creative experience for myself that I can use to educate people on these wonderful little creatures while also allowing my display collection to build and grow humanely. I've already planned out a process to do this with giant stag beetles from the next state over. Given how short luna moths are out and about, I was wondering if it was possible to go hunting for the caterpillars or something and raise them into the moths themselves as well. I'm happy to see I was right. Now I just need to figure out if it's possible with exotic species like Agrias' 88 butterfly or the white witch moth, two of my favorites. I could see rearing bugs being one of my favorite lifetime hobbies!
A lot of exotic species can be farmed! And I support collecting; most of our knowledge of insects comes from collections! Check out my other vids, I also have tutorials of exotic species :)
Back in June '22 i found a luna moth caterpillar in his last stage on my back porch, brought him in and put him in my terrarium to observe him (i didn't know it was a luna moth caterpillar at the time until i researched) and he made his cocoon iny terrarium and a month later he came out and was the most beautiful moth ever. It was definitely a cool experience to witness and I've been in love with luna moths since ❤️
@BartCoppens I recently had a Luna moth lay eggs. When I incubate them, should I mist them with water? Or just leave them alone? Thank you :) love your videos❤️
Just a tip! I use floral tubes for my cuttings and floral tube racks. They work very well! I've also only seen maybe 2 out of the hundreds of luna cats I've had turn very orange usually it's just a tiny bit in my experience
I love this video, it's so informative! I'm planning on starting to raise moths/butterflies indoors, but I have cats that will want to play with them 😅. Will a vivarium of sturdy mesh and glass be a suitable enclosure?
@BartCoppens thank you - maybe I could DIY a mesh enclosure to keep them safe. I'm subscribed and going through your vids, do you have one on acherontia atropos?
I’m a first time breeder. This video helped me a lot! Thank you for posting 🥹 I have one chrysalis now and the other two who were born at the same time haven’t made their chrysalis yet :( is there anything I can do to help them with the process?
I love moths so much. Unfortunately in New Zealand, we don't really have many big moths. We have the Puriri moth, but that's about it. I wish we had luna moths. They're some of my favourite.
Is there even a SINGLE species of saturniid in your region??? I'd be utterly surprised if not because they can live in some of the coldest countries minus Antarctica.
I must say you are absolutely awesome and I'm so glad I found your channel second though I need some quick answers so hopefully you answer quickly I had found one of these on my birch tree and I have been babysitting it through our Long Cold Pennsylvania winner and now it is to the point I can feel it inside wiggling around but what are definite signs it's getting ready to hatch? I definitely do not want to miss this event also my other question is seeing how I only have but one to be Humane I am assuming I should let it go outside so it can hopefully find a mate and maybe down the road make sure I have a couple so if and when they hatch they'll definitely find a mate.. thank you again and any help or advice in a timely fashion would be greatly appreciated I am so excited to see this happen I have a feeling it's going to be soon but I want to be sure when
I brought one inside cause we had a late snow and she wasn't moving for a couple days. She layed eggs in the container now. Do they only lay eggs if they have mated, or might they be unfertilized?
I had some at school but they were called Indian moon moths they eat rhododendron and they seem to be 3 times the size of the lunar moth or is it just the same from America I'm not sure
I love these beautiful creatures. Thanks for this informative video! I live in India where temperature ranges from as low as 1°C in winters to 50°C in summers so unfortunately I can't keep them as pets :( Do you know of any beautiful moth species that could survive in these conditions?
@@BartCoppens Thanks for the reply friend! I hope to see more of these short videos. You have ignited a new found love for insects within me and ideally I'd want to watch the long videos with thorough explanation of everything, but life doesn't spare me the time to do so.
Hi my moon moth's wings r really weird, i know after they'rhatching their wings don't look usual/normal and they need time, but mine looks really weird could it have some problem while hatching? I put a video in my chanel of the moth
Could be lack of humidity, if the cocoon is too hard the moth can have troubles getting out. Some people might say it's useless but usually i cut the top of the cocoon off to ease the birth.
I do not know how this came into my recommended viewing liat.. I am sure glas it rid. I used to love finding these moths in Tennessee. We do not have them in Idaho or Oregon.
Thank you so much! I am trying to convince my parents to let me get these I don't know where to buy eggs though, if anyone sees this please let me know where I can buy luna moth eggs!
Water was the mistake. Never spray water in a plastic container. The extreme humidity kills them. If the food is fresh they don't need water. They get enough water from the leaves

I really like that these moths are slowly making a comeback because of hobbies like this. Such beautiful moths!

This one was perfect.
This wasn’t too long, perfect video
I encountered a Luna moth a few years ago in Charlotte, VT. They are quite beautiful to behold.
From a breeder this was very good , excellent in fact and practicality , do hope you do other breeds like this , well done ! 🇬🇧
Although I personally love your moth cycles vids, I can see how these shorter segments may increase your demographic 😊
Yes, I will only make short versions for very populair species :)
Just saw one for the first time just on the ground at the gas station. I had no idea this moth was so big!!! It startled me 😂❤🦋🌙
So beautiful! Thank you for this tutorial, I’m planning on raising some moths soon myself!
You should! It's the best
Love you and your incredible breeding storys. Thx. I love the long vids a lot... A lot....

Absolutely love this video. My son will love it too, thank you! Very educational and easy to understand 😊 excited to start this journey ourselves now

That was very educational and interesting. Would luv to see some on butterflies too if you have some. Thank you for sharing.
my favorite moth 💜
Since I was a child, I’ve raised six species of giant silk moths native to North America. I’m almost 65, and still fascinated by the process.
If I make it to 65 I will be rearing moths still! That's a promise

Generally glass isn't great to keep adult Lepidoptera in. It may work for larvae, tho. I have more butterfly and moth breeding videos if youre curious
@BartCoppens thank you - maybe I could DIY a mesh enclosure to keep them safe. I'm subscribed and going through your vids, do you have one on acherontia atropos?

Can you breed these at any time of the year, Or does it need to be when they would normally breed in nature?
Fascinating ✌🏼🙏🏼❤️
How do I get the eggs if I don't live in your area (country)?
Excellent video, very well done.
Thank you very much!
Hi Bart, I loved the video!! Do you think you could do a video like this for Antheraea Polyphemus?
Great suggestion!

What are the white looking eggs on their back. Is that bad? Thanks

I really loved this video ❤
i wanna ask if we can keep the cocoons at the fridge beca here where i live most of the time in the winter is not that cold 😢
Yes

Here cause I ran into three of these today, found one in my garage flying aimlessly around, set the little guy free
I brought one inside cause we had a late snow and she wasn't moving for a couple days. She layed eggs in the container now. Do they only lay eggs if they have mated, or might they be unfertilized?
They can lay unfertilised eggs too!
What instar do I move them
Where can you get eggs to start!?
What do I do if I don’t want more babies??
Where do u find luna moths?
i have four females right now and one male and i haven’t seen them breed at all :( any reasoning why you think this may be?
Hey Bart! heb je tips over waar ik aan eitjes of rupsjes kan komen?
'Time to Breed', Insectnet of 'Actias.de'
Hello ! Can you give recommendations on places to buy eggs/larvae/cocoons ? I really want to raise moths but I'm a bit lost
Insectnet is great
@@BartCoppens Thanks !
Where do you get the eggs?
❤
I had some at school but they were called Indian moon moths they eat rhododendron and they seem to be 3 times the size of the lunar moth or is it just the same from America I'm not sure
Must be Actias selene!
My caterpillars die instantly after hatching... Why? I followed all steps
What should i do if i bought some cocoons in spring? Should i hibernate them? They havent hatch for a while
The best is to follow nature. Store them cold from about November to April
@@BartCoppens I put them in the fridge, cuz now its warm outside
How much do luna moth cost?
I didn't know they couldn't eat... Sad but beautiful.
They're like something out of a Final Fantasy game
I love these beautiful creatures. Thanks for this informative video! I live in India where temperature ranges from as low as 1°C in winters to 50°C in summers so unfortunately I can't keep them as pets :(
Do you know of any beautiful moth species that could survive in these conditions?
India has other native silkmoths! Like Actias selene.

can you just start them in the biggest container?
I think the babies are so small that they could crawl through the mesh.
I do not know how this came into my recommended viewing liat.. I am sure glas it rid. I used to love finding these moths in Tennessee. We do not have them in Idaho or Oregon.
