"In an area without high humidity"
RIP, Florida butterflies.
this was really succinct and easy to follow. i have so many butterflies ive been wanting to pin from this summer
My bedroom is gonna look like a museum. Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much for explaining this! A friend gave me a beautiful Luna Moth and I've wanted to put it in a shadowbox, but was so afraid I'd ruin it 🦋👍🙂
Whoa. Thank you for this. I think I just found a new hobby.
Oh wow a Ulysses Butterfly! I grew up with these all through our garden. They were used as an emblem a lot throughout my town lol. Even though they were common, I still got excited each time I saw one (and the Cairns Birdwings), they're so pretty.
Anyway, thanks for the tutorial, it was very helpful!
Thank you so much for the easy to follow video which enabled me to successfully pin my first butterfly. I have put it aside for a week until I place it in a shadowbox. Can't wait to see the final result.
This method is going to make things a lot easier for me, thank you!
this was so helpful thank you for the amazing video!
This was so helpful! Thank you!
Very professional presentation. Thank you!
Thank you for your knowledge!
This was very helpful thank you!
I have found so many butterflies over the years and though how I wish they could be preserved. Each one is so unique. I love tours and thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this, ive been so nervous to start pinning, but this is so clear to follow, I feel so much more confidant to start!
this is very helpful! thank you for sharing
It's beautiful
Thank you so much!
Amazing video thank you
I’m so obsessed with this!! One of my relatives is an entomologist which got me into it! ^^
Brilliant video thankyou. Could you please link products, and create a short video about the humidity box? Thankyou
Thank you for posting.
This is a great video the on thing I would recommend is keeping your butterfly a little longer to hydrate so it doesn’t break but great video
I would like to learn more about pinning and mounting.
It is helpful video for me thanks you.
Where is the one antenna of the butterfly. Actually two antenna are present when you pin it.
While the silicone on the butterfly dries is it ideal to keep the top of the shadow box open or closed? Also, could you use this same method for other bugs/insects such as dragonflies?
Beautiful! Any suggestions about where to find deceased flutterbyes??? I'm in rural ohio.
hi, i found some butterflies.. but since i didn't know how to prepere them, i left them for months... should I wait longer when hidrating it?
Where did you get the mold from? The blue one you placed the butterfly on
Hi! I love your video. You make it look easy. Where can I buy all I need to preserve my butterflies?
I think Etsy is a good place to buy most of these items ( butterfly boards, shadow boxes and dried butterflies) and for the containers you can buy them from most supermarkets. The silicone can be found in shops focused on DIY or a DIY section in a supermarket it depends where you live but where I am B&Q is a good bet for the silicone.
Hope this helps :)
Where do you get your butterflies? If you don't mind me asking...
Where do u get your shadow box’s from?
So if I catch a fresh butterfly can I just dry it and re hydrate it then pin it? I heard someone say you should freeze it to kill the bacteria but I don’t know if I should freeze it and then can I just pin it?
Can I use gift tissue paper instead of parchment paper?
i wanna do this with a moth is there anything i can use if i don't have silicone?
Where do you purchase your unopened butterflies from?
Where can I get all the materials including the butterfly itself from? (preferably link websites please)
what if you live somewhere like florida? would an airtight container with silica beads work for the drying time?
How long after they pass away do you need to wait before doing this?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but the legs of my butterfly are in the way? Do I just glue thru/all over them? I'm worried it will be a fat messy glob.
Help!? I have a butterfly that I purchased in a shadow box but I noticed part of her is fading? What can I do to stop it from happening
Have you epoxied butterflies before? I am trying to find a way to do it and am having a very difficult time doing so.
Does this apply to cicadas as well?
Where dobyou get your shadow box?
Thanks for the video! I found a butterfly today, how should I preserve it until I mount it?
Hello, place it in the freezer for the best preservation!
How do you make sure you have a dry space for the butterflies to wait in? Or what’s an example or a way to make a dry space?
Basically you don't want to place them in a room with a lot of humidity. So avoid bathrooms or even rooms with a lot of windows with condensation.
Hi! Thanks for the video, it was really clear and helpful. I bought a pinboard that is adjustable, how do I determine at what size the gap (in which you put the body in) should be. How much space around the body should the gap have? Thanks!
As long as the body fits in between comfortably and is not pressing on the sides or squishing! There is no set space as the bodies of specimens vary.
Thank you good job
Thank you, this was so useful! Does it work with dragonflies and moths too??
Yes it does!
I have a few questions hope you dont mind, but if I have a freshly dead moth, can I just mount them immediately?
And if I could, would mold grow inside the display shadow box later on, because they till have their original fluids or not ?
And say I'm not ready to mount them yet, how can I properly let them dry and be stored without the growth of mold and still be kept save for some time ?
Sorry for asking much I'm new to preserving moths and other beautiful critters
Typically I recommend putting a freshly dead specimen into a freezer for a day or two just to ensure that it has completely passed on and that there is nothing else feeding on the specimen that you may not be able to see. In terms of mold allow your specimen to completely dry out in the open air before placing it into any container as if it is immediately put in an air tight container it will mold if not dried properly. If you're not ready to mount it yet you can let them dry out for a week or two in the open air and then you can place them into a sealed container so they don't get excessive dusty or have issues with dermestids. Just remember, the thicker the body the longer you have to leave it out to dry.
@Jacobs Trading Ye Olde Rock Shop thank you sooo much. Besides my questions, this answers everything I was confused about, u deserve my follow 😊
Where can I find insects to buy for pinning?
What gauge syringe do you recommend for hydrating them?
I would recommend using a pretty small syringe, around 20g - 22g point!
Does this work with butterflies that aren't in the package thing? I have a couple butterflies that I found dying then died in my yard and I've been wanting to pin them up but I'm scared abt the wings breaking off..
Yes, the process is the same, but make sure you re hydrate them before trying to manipulate the wings!
Hey! Awesome video very informative for a beginner like me! Question though, do you have to keep butterflies and insects in shadow boxes? I want to pin them to paintings of mine but I’m worried about damage from things like dust… let me know your thoughts! Thank you
Hi there, butterflies need to be completely sealed for them to remain preserved. Otherwise they could face mold and decay. A properly sealed shadowbox protects them from this :)
@@YeOldeRockShop I'm wanting to do the same thing, add one to a mixed media piece. Trying to find out if that will work/last, as I've only seen them on plain backgrounds, but want to paint one. I have done other 3D art with pebbles and dried flowers where I mounted a canvas panel to the back of a shadowbox. Do you think that would work if it were sealed behind glass? Any advice or thoughts on how to do it? Could the prepped butterfly be glued to the painting for display behind glass? Thank you!
What timeframe would you say if you do not inject? I've watched some videos and they all said different answers. You seem the most knowledgeable out of each video I've watched & your voice is so soothing, thank you!
Hello, It can really vary depending on the size and thickness of the butterfly (this is probably why you have seen different answers) It could take anywhere from 5 minutes and up to an hour. You'll know when its ready the wings are flexible.
There's a butterfly with damaged wings around the neighborhood for like 2 days. I got it and brought it in. Im not going to let it get eaten by feral or outside cats. I hope i can do a decent job. Is there any specific conditions for twisted wings? Idc if its not perfect. Im going to care for it until its last breath and make it live forever as art for my nieces who helped it
Can this be done with moths too?
what if the butterflies wings are movable when you find it, do you still need to rehydrate it to put in a shadow box?
If they are moveable no. Please make sure this is not due to rot in the specimen. We would recommend freezing it first to make sure any pests or bacteria is removed as well.
I have some butterfly wings with no body. How would you suggest I mount it in a shadow box or picture frame? I'm not sure if glue or silicone will damage or show through the wings since I don't have the underside of the body to put it on.
Putting a little silicone under the top vein of the wing should work! Clear silicone would work best as of course you will still see a little through the wing.
is it possible to over hydrate the wings? everywhere i look seems to give different answers and i know the easiest way around this would be to check on the wings every few minutes but if it’s possible i’d like to leave them hydrate for a set time if it doesn’t matter
Yes you can over hydrate, if you leave them for too long they can start producing mold which will deteriorate the wings. It really depends on how big the specimen is for the hydration time so there is no set time frame.
Using tweezers straight up did not work for me, it messed up their wings big time. Using my fingers was way easier and shockingly didn't damage the wings at all. A lot more difficult than I thought!
Would it be a bad idea to hide a little silica packet in the shadow box somewhere so it can suck out any moisture that gets in?
Not a bad idea! It would not harm the piece!
Thanks!!! At a zoo near me they have a butterfly enclosure and I found a wing, so the lady said I could keep it then asked if I wanted a dead butterfly to! So I used this to pin it
This is beautiful!! Can this be done with butterflies that have been dead about 2 weeks? My mom found some monarchs that passed naturally. I want to display them but worried that since they've been dead too long that it won't work
Hello! Yes you can use them! However make sure to freeze them before hand in case of any pests. Then re hydrate as shown in the video! :)
@@YeOldeRockShop thank you so much!! Love your video! Not overwhelming but very informative
Is there anyway to fix a butterfly with a wing the broke off? Or a thorax that broke off? Like one wing just completely broke off from the body.
Depending on how bad the damage is, using silicone would be your best bet. This takes practice however and is a very fine process, use your tweasers for the best accuracy.
found a dead 1 n wanna put it in a frame 😅
I do with the cutie butterfly😭😭😭😭
Hi!
I have a few questions:
Can you just use any shadowframe like the ones from IKEA?
Is silicone glue soluble so you can put the butterfly in a different shadowframe if i would want to in the future? Or does soluble glue not exist?
I saw someone using a special tape to make sure nothing can get in the frame, does sillicone glue do the same?
If i use an IKEA frame where do i put the glue or tape?
I'm only a beginner and i finally know how to prepare the butterflies, but now i'm trying to find out the best way to display them in a frame or a bell jar.
Thanks in advance,
Janneke
Hello, you can use any shadowbox just make sure you seal up the back so that nothing can get into it. The silicone is not soluble so if you are wanting to place it into a frame and then place it into a different one afterwards, I would recommend you to not use any glue for the butterfly at all. You can get shadowboxes with a pillow or a foam backing where you can then use that center pin to just pin the insect to the back instead of gluing it. This way you can move it to another frame later on. Although using silicon is safer as the pin is not as stable and can fall off. If you are wanting to change frames you can also get a picture framing tape that you can use on the back of the frame. It is a moisture adhesive tape that you put along the edge in the back to help seal it. You can use a knife to cut this in the future to remove the butterfly, but it is not as secure at a silicon would. As for the IKEA frame I am unfamiliar with it, but you want to put the silicon along the edge where the back of the frame attaches to the front. The goal is to seal it in, so if you are unsure of the frame you want to use, I would recommend waiting until you find the perfect frame as your specimen will be safer if it is fully enclosed.
@@YeOldeRockShop Thank you for the information, it is really helpful!
Question! How do you go about removing the center pin from the body after the butterfly has dried? I always thought this would break the specimen?
Practice and a gentle hand! :)
I always wondered what the best method is. Thank you.
Because of the decrease in Butterflies due to climate change, I am wondering where you get your butterflies? I have a collection of 14 all in one frame at the bottom of the frame I have a disclaimer that states "ROAD KILL ONLY"
Hello, All of butterflies come from ethically sourced farms. None are wild caught. None of the species we use are endangered.
What can i do if one wing accidentally broke off while injecting warm water :(
Thank you so much for this video! I have a cecropia moth I am framing, but after rehydrating the moth, I noticed the bottom started turning yellow. Is this an issue, or is there anything I can do to fix this?
Sometimes if too much fluid is injected with high pressure, it may cause some of the specimen to leak out. Allow the specimen to completely dry out for a longer period of time. Without seeing it I cannot verify if its mold or not. If it is, you can try to dab the area with rubbing alcohol GENTLY to kill off any growing old. Then allow the specimen to dry out completely afterwords.
@@YeOldeRockShop Thanks so much!
not sure if you still look at comments, but i was wondering, why do you inject the butterfly with water? and also would this process be the same for moths?
Hello! Injecting the butterflies directly with water helps loosen up the joints much quicker than just a humidity box. It also puts the moisture directly where you need it most! Moths would definitely be able to do the same method!
Hi! I found two dead moths with their wings out already, do I still need to rehydrate it? Would I need to preserve it at all?
If you are happy with the wing placement you do not need to re hydrate. However make sure they are completely dry before placement. So I would recommend storing them for a week in a dry location until then.
Where do you get your frames?
Hi, Any Shadowbox would do, check your local dollar store!
Every time I go to spread the wings parts of the wings seem to break off or i get rips in them. Any idea what im doing wrong?
Make sure you are hydrating your specimen for the appropriate amount of time. If it is not hydrated enough, breakage often occurs. Also, make sure you are being as gentle as possible. Its a very depreciate process and takes a lot of practice! :)
Hi! I was wondering if it's possible to cover butterflies in resin so that it remains in a 3D form? Rather than submerging it in resin and a mold, which will keep it flat. Will this affect the vibrance of it's wings and deteriorate?
Hello, Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with working with resin! Sorry about that!
I don't think this will effect your butterfly as I have seen this done before, you can probably find tutorials on UA-cam of how to do this properly but it is possible.
Hope this helps :)
Can you use something other than silicon or is it better?
Silicon is definitely best!
Do you have any trouble shooting tips? I keep ripping my wings though I’m very gentle and using tools instead of touching wings with my bare hands. I think I’m over working them
Honestly, as frustrating as it is, if you are using tools and not using your hands its really just a lot of practice!
How do you know if it needs rehydrated
The hydration makes the specimen easy to maneuver and pose. If it seems stiff or ridged, it needs hydration. :)
Can u leave the pin in so u can take it out later bc I am using something a little different
yeap!
@@YeOldeRockShop thanks
awesome guide!! I really wanna pin some moths but I have found out that you need uv resistant glass so the sun does not damage and fade the colors :( how can I get uv resistant glass, can anyone help? :(
To my knowledge I havent been able to find a method to make the glass UV resistant. The best way to preserve your butterfly art is to not place it in a bright location. They are better suited for hallways and other rooms with minimal windows.
@@YeOldeRockShop thank you for your quick reply! I wish there was something we could put on the glass to protect them :( thanks!
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong but the scales seem to be coming off on the parchment paper just touching them 😔
Hello, make sure you are using non stick, waxed parchment paper and avoid touching the wings with your fingers at all costs. Its the oil that usually causes the scales to come off.
This was so helpful :) would it be bad to use superglue or regular glue instead of silicone?
I'm not very experienced and I dont personally pin butterflies but I will in the future, you don't have to listen to me but here's my thoughts. Super glue might harm the back of your butterfly and do other things due to the chemicals and regular glue could be hard to apply due to how it's either too thick (as a glue stick) or too stringy and sticky (as PVA or liquid)
I hope this helps but like I said you don't have to follow this advice as I'm only a child. Thank you for reading this :)
Also, if the superglue isn't fully dry before closing the shadowbox, it will fog up the glass. And I think it's not a thick enough glue consistency for a good long term hold. I think silicone is recommended in this case because it's probably not as acidic, so it won't eat away your specimen over time.
I found a dead butterfly 🦋 wings still intact and looks great
But I cant do this process until a couple months later. Will the butterfly stay intact if I keep it sealed until then?
Yes but it will preserve best in the freezer
Hey! What type of silicone glue do you use? Could you link it? There are so many options at the store I am unsure what to get. Thanks!
We use Mono Silicon Max (100% waterproof silicon) - Clear
@@YeOldeRockShop Hi, I’m kind of confusing this answer as that is just a sealant that you listed and is not an adhesive?
I have a butterfly that died in my garden with wings spread. Do I still need to hydrate it to work with it?
If you're happy with the way its already sitting, you can just silicone it to a frame. However, if you want to manipulate the wings at all, you will need to dehydrate it! :)
@@YeOldeRockShop Thank you! I wasn’t sure if the rehydration was exclusively for opening the wings or if it was needed for any type of manipulation. I appreciate the reply! It’s a huge King Swallowtail and I don’t want to mess it up! ❤️
Can you hydrate the butterfly with out injecting it?
Yes you can, this just requires the specimen to be in the hydration box longer. However, you risk molding with this method.
I came here because I played Dream Daddy, a Daddy Dating Simulator and a Dadbook event for one of the characters gave me just enough information to become interested in pinning butterflies. Random, I know.
Hey what if i caught them and it's till alive how do i kill it just put in a box and put in a freezer?
Lmao I'm in the same situation rn, I think I'll just leave it like that until it dies, and then do what she did. I don't think you can kill it normally without damaging the wings
Don't kill them.
can I use hot glue instead of silicon?
I haven't used it before for this, but I would potentially worry about it letting go? Particularly on a shiny bodied insect, on say a beetle. Butterflies may be ok?
Does this work with moths as well?
yeap! Just depending on the thickness of their bodies they may take longer to hydrate and to dry!
Hey I have a question! Do you need a syringe? I don't have one but I have a butterfly I found that I want to pin, thanks!
You dont NEED one, however it will just take much longer to hydrate. To do this place the butterfly in a air tight container with a warm wet cloth (paper towel) and leave until wings are mobile.
@@YeOldeRockShop thank you!
I did it! I pinned my butterfly! I got a syringe and i think it turned out well (needs to dry) I followed exactly the instructions, thank you so much for the youtube video! Lots of love, Ava.
what is another way to rehydrate if you dont have syringes
You can place the specimens in a humidity box for an extended amount of time. But this does increase the chance of mold
@@YeOldeRockShopbut couldn’t you add alcohol mixed with the water and that work to prevent mold?
Don't you try to glue their antenna back on when they break?
Sometimes? You definitely could!
How to buy dead butterfly 😶
Etsy has them :)
I have a question is that real butterfly
Hello, Yes it is
Question: Do I have to inject warm water into the butterfly or can I just put it in a humidity box?
bc I’m personally not allowed to use needles because my psychiatrist doesn’t want me messing with it due to past issues🤠
Yes, you can do it without the syringe however the hydration time will take longer.
@@i.dont.read.replies you didn’t have to reply you wanted to. 😌😘
I had the same question. I personally just don't like needles.
Hi, I just have a question I wondered if you can answer.
Killing the butterfly. I’m raising some Peacock caterpillars I found into butterflies and then want to dispatch and set them.
What’s the best method of dispatch without a chemical kill jar? I’ve seen “pinching” recommended but I’ve no idea where to begin and there are no tutorials. And then freezing. I’d do the freezing, but I’m curious as to the aftermath. How long to freeze? Do they go mushy when thawed or are they fine?
Thanks for any advice.
Hello, I would recommend freezing. Leave them for a few days and allow them to de-thaw before working with them. Personally, Ive never had a problem with them coming out mushy.
@@YeOldeRockShop Okay, thank you so much! :) It seemed so hard to find advice for this!
That butterfly at 8:15 actually looks so scary. I wonder if its possible to make a dress out of morpho butterflies? It would be an awesome wedding present for my 3rd wife. (If it happens, hopefully the first two don't get too jealous)
It could work
