VERY good video on how to make a high quality structure map! There are some things I really don't like about Lowrance but I may have to get a Ti because Humminbird can't seem to get their crap together on this feature. I have been holding out for a few years but apparently Humminbird has little interest (or ability) in competing with Lowrance on this.

... Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
I found out how to map contours only, (sgl) from a Team Colibri blog yesterday.
At 2:12, YOU are the first one to ever mention Formatting in a youtube video.
This video was VERY GOOD, short, basic and to the point.
I have watched just about every video on mapping. Now I believe I know how to do it correctly. This past Sunday, I thought I was mapping contour lines but when I converted it and went back to view it, it was structure, default- sl3.
I now know for sonar contour lines I need to select slg.
I have the latest Navionics MSD card but it isn't close to being detailed enough to find the fish holding areas on drops, nooks and crannies.
    You have another subscriber.
    Thank you.

First, MANY thanks for a GREAT! video It was very well thought out and didn't leave out any of the specifics like changing the File Format to (sl2) for the Totalscan Transducer from the default format i.e. (sl3). Struggled with this issue and you were the first person that gave specifics on how to record without errors.
I am using a Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 Chartplotter with a Totalscan transducer and currently using Lowrance Maps on my Chart Page. I haven't taken the boat out yet to try the Log Sonar feature since viewing your video but taking your guidance I am now able to save my sonar logs. I have a couple of questions and your valued input would be appreciated.
    1. Will I be able to use (Lowrance as my chart source) and view the recorded structure maps or will this only work if I use a Navionics or C-Map charting as my chart source?
    2. If I set the overlay on the chart screen to (Structure) while using Lowrance as my chart source and selecting the structure options (Source) as (saved) will it automatically display structure logged saved files overlays as I travel over saved logged sonar areas?
3.. If I have multiple structure logged saved files in different locations will it display the appropriate overlay on the screen as I travel over those areas utilizing the Lowrance Chart map?
Any guidance you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
    John

      Good Day John!
Thank you for your comment and kind words!
The Structuremap feature is an amazing feature and a major part of my tournament preparations and a major tool that i use during my tournaments / days fishing.....
      Answers to your questions:
1.) The Structuremap is an overlay that is a layer on top of the chart. I often have my structuremaps layered over the top of low level satellite imagery....As an overlay, you can have any chart you want in the background :)
2.) If you set the overlay to Structure - Saved, it will display structuremaps that you have logged and saved as SMF (Structure Map Files) on the unit as overlays on your chart.
3.) If your overlay is set to Structure -- Saved... it will display ALL logged structuremaps that are converted into the unit....so the lake that you are currently on.... and lakes that are for example 100s of miles away if they are still loaded onto the unit.
I always log to an SD card then convert what is needed onto the fishfinder.... I then take out the SD card and put it into the bow unit and convert them there as well so that I can use the structuremaps while fishing on the trolling motor.
Once I am done on that body of water and moving onto the next venue, I usually clear the SMF files out of the fishfinder's internal memory.... this helps keep the unit clear of data that is not needed for another lake... so I would only have the SL2 logs and SMF for the specific lake I am fishing on the unit / SD card.
I keep a database on my PC / Laptop / Different SD cards for each lake.
This will ensure the unit has enough available memory :)
I do not bother with clearing waypoints though :) Even with 10 000+ waypoints, I do not see any difference in unit performance whether they are all loaded or it is cleared between different venues.
I hope the above helps :)
      Kind regards

Hello, and many thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Your reply was extremely helpful.
I do mostly inshore salt water fishing in the Tampa Bay area here on the West Coast of Florida. I have a keen interest in Structure Mapping. The Tampa Bay has numerous shipping channels for large cargo ships to enter different ports within Tampa Bay.
Fish tend to hang out near the edges of the various shipping channels which were dredged to approximately 50 foot in depth and the shelf on either side of the channel is approximately 28 foot tapering out to about 12 foot.
My goal is to use my Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 to create structure map overlays so that I can get a better idea of what the structure looks like along the edges of the shipping channels. Fish like to hang out near various structure whether it be on the actual walls of the shipping channel or on the ledges on each side where boulders/rocks were left behind during the channel dredging process.
My hope is that I will be able to create some really nice structure map overlays for use while on my boat or at home where I have a 12 volt power source where I can review the Structure Map Overlays while sitting in my home. I can then mark appropriate waypoints for future fishing trips.
It will be nice to able to move around (Zooming to different areas where I created structure maps) on the Lowrance Chart page while at home and view the newly created structure map overlays I created along the shipping channels and other areas of interest. Of course I will change from live to saved i.e. SD Card in the structure options Source.
Currently it is pretty windy but hope to get out on Wednesday to try out Structure mapping for the first time. I am pretty excited. Hope this all works as planned as it appears to be a very nice tool for fishing.
Thanks again for all your help. You are the man!

Just an update. We took the boat out today and everything worked as I had hoped.
Structure mapping worked fine. I made multiple Structure maps at different locations around Tampa Bay and saved them to my SD card. I was then able to view them in (saved) Source Type and zoom into the scans and mark structure with waypoints for possible future use. I have all this data saved on my SD card and can view it on the boat at any time in the future or at home utilizing a remote 12 volt power supply for the Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 unit.
I notice when structure mapping you have your page split into 4 screens. I was only using 2 screens and wondered about the possibility of locating fish with the (fish reveal) option during the structure mapping process. The next trip I will make a new page with 4 screens like yours. That should allow me utilize the (fish reveal) function while Structure mapping.
      1. Chart
      2. Side Scan
      3. Down Scan
      4. Traditional Sonar
My HDS7 has a pretty small screen. I also found here on the internet that you can add an IPAD or Android Tablet that will mirror your screen. It runs off of and app from Navionics utilizing local WIFI from your Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 unit. No subscription internet service required. This will allow me to get a view on a larger screen witch would be helpful during Structure Mapping operations.
MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. I COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU.
      YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!

@@helicopterjohns Awesome to hear! Glad you got it right!!!! I would adjust the page splits so you can maximise the screen area... you can do this by tapping the power button then pressing on adjust splits (While you're on your page you built).....You can also swipe away the right hand menu by putting your finger on the menu then swiping it off to the screen towards the right (this hides the right hand menu and will give you an extra inch of screen)

      Hi,
Thanks again for all your help in setting up Sonar Logging/Structure Mapping on my Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 unit. He is something I put together that may??/ help others with their setup.
I have recently developed an interest in Structure Mapping on my Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 unit with a TotalScan Transducer. I have done quite a bit of research on how this is done and how to use it.
Here is a link to a google Drive Folder with (5 reference documents) included to help you create Structure Mapping files and properly install them on your Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 unit so that you can view them on your chart as an overlay. As long as you have the separate SD card installed in one of your SD card slots with the files created during the structure mapping process the saved structure mapped areas will automatically be viewable on your chart. You can have multiple structured mapped areas on the SD card and they will all show up on your chart. If you have the appropriate 12 volt power supply with appropriate Lowrance Power Cable attached to your Lowrance Head unit and can easily view your chart data in the comfort of your home. If you added any waypoints you can select one and tell the head unit to (show) and it will take you to that location on the card displaying your over layed data. While you are examining the chart you can even add additional waypoints if desired.

This is the best new feature that I have discovered on my Lowrance HDS7 Gen3 unit equipped with a Totalscan Transducer.
With the information included in the 5 items included you should be able to able to enjoy Sonar Logging/Structure Mapping.
Hope this is of some help in setting up your (Lowrance unit and transducer combination) that is (capable) of doing sonar logging.
      John
