Karate Kid - Daniel's Training "WAX ON WAX OFF"

- Karate Kid (first movie) - This is one of the most inspiring parts of the movie where Mr. Miyagi conditions Daniel for defensive karate without his fore knowledge of it. Very cool how they wrote this in an performed it very well.
One of the greatest scenes in film history.
Absolutely!!! I get emotional when I see this!
NOO IT'S NOT MY LORD
Cringe
Not as cringe as your youtube channel lol ^
Ross Cicero Amen
Brilliant scene. Daniel learned the value of hard work and defensive blocks through muscle memory. And Miyagi got his house remodeled without having to do the work himself.
Win win
I see that as an absolute win
You should always give, you may get that unexpected something.
Daniel getting the better of that deal.
@@Yurihyuga766 I understood that reference.
My dad had me wax cars, clean floors, paint fences and paint the house when I was a teen. But I didn't learn shit bc he's not a karate sensei
Arthur Rubio You weren't good enough and your dad new it.
However, you did learn the value of a job well done. Something that's not a common as it should be anymore.
I think if Mitch Hedberg were alive today he’d appreciate this joke.
OMG, this made me laugh.
because you have to do it a certain way you dumb ass lol XD
no wonder you didn't learn shit morons. XD
This is when Daniel finally humbled himself completely and never questioned his sensei again. The labor he did was a fair trade off plus it bulked him up a little bit and made him have good form. Myagi was 1000x the man that John Kreese was. They were both war veterans and both experts in martial arts but Myagi was the genuine article. The things he wanted to teach Daniel son were so much deeper than just fighting. Myagi was the kind of man that everyone should strive to be. I love the part where Daniel was feeling sorry for himself after the spaghetti incident but sees his sensei drunk and very vulnerable and emotional and learns that he lost a wife and son, but then tucks him in and bows at him before leaving. That scene warmed my heart.
I also think Miyagi was waiting for Daniel to stand up for himself. It's good to be obedient, but one has to have self-respect as well. It's likely Miyagi would have never trained him until Daniel finally hit the breaking point.
Brian Jarvis Perfectly balanced.
Daniel-san not son
You don't bulk up from painting fences and waxing cars

I don't know why but watching this as an adult brings me to tears.

Same, for me it’s because my dad is gone and I’ve never felt truly taught since then.
Me too. Saw this exactly 40 years ago I was 8 at the time. My dad loved this move. RIP.
That moment when suddenly it all makes sense. And yes, my good buddy and I both got with our parents to sign up for Karate lessons. Thanks Karate Kid.
Gray I didn’t know you liked Karate movies, now you can play some Karate games on your channel wax on wax off.
Damn it’s weird seeing Gray comment on a video other than his

Mr Miyagi is a genius. Made Daniel do countless chores but specific hand movements so he is actually teaching Daniel muscle memory with exhausting movements. Once your body learns it repeatedly, it becomes natural. Perfect.
that is how Karate is. Its not just a martial art but movement in everyday life.
yep
1:36 Not sure why, but the way Mr Miyagi mocks Daniel makes me crack up every single time 😂

The moment that blew my fuckin mind as a kid.
+Jack Ream ha, yeah was just saying the same thing; seemed like the old man was just taking Daniel San for a ride, but the wily ol' master was teaching him the awesome fundamentals (and a bit of strength conditioning into the bargain) - seems a semi-obvious plot now, but as you say, as a kid it blew my fuckin mind too ..
+Jack Ream If THAT blew your mind, imagine actual karate. When they first handed me a bo staff and told me to use one I said "How? I've never used one before, I've only done regular karate up until now". Turns out, the only difference between a weapon in your hand and normal karate is... that there's a weapon in your hand. The techniques, stances etc. are ALL the same as in regular hand-to-hand karate. It was such a trip realizing I already knew the basics of using weapons like a bo, sai, nunchuck and katana.
Yeh me too.
omg ikr 😂
Word
Muscle memory is a crazy thing.
27 years later I can still remember my drill movements from boot camp
Kenneth Lee
Nearly 10 years later, I can remember and do all of my martial arts training from when I was a kid.
Wax on , wacks off
It really is. I learned to play guitar in college & my early 20s, then went nearly a decade without playing at all. About a month ago I decided to pick it up again and dug my guitar out of the closet. Even after a ten year absence my hands still remembered how to do all the chord shapes and scales without me needing to look at the fretboard. Shit's crazy.
@@sdime9858 what’s your time ?
This was the most epic scene in the movie ever... the audience gasped with awe when they realize all that Daniel was doing was really training the time in the theater house... no other movie liking to this comes this close in the value of overcoming all odds and believing in yourself... teachings we need for our kids today. With today's standards, as Mr. Miyagi, I miss Pat Morita even more... :(
No one gasped. Give me a break.
I’m not so sure Michael Ambercrombie. I was in hs when I saw this in the theaters and remembering the audience murmuring as if a seminar had just let out once this scene ended I remember at least two people clapping for about two seconds. An iconic cinematic scene that has resonated throughout the decades.
i heard that Ralph machio was really popular back in the day after this movie
@@michaelabercrombie7698 some did.
If you were not into kung fu theater, then you would be surprised by this scene
i was 10 years old. when this scene came on i looked back at my dad in awe and he smiled. "listen to Miyagi". I still do dad and R.I.P.
damn.........
Pat Morita is gone but Mr. Miyagi lives forever.
Damn right. As long as the human species survives he'll be immortalized thanks to these films.
Amen
That’s deep man.
Macchio acting as the shy/scared teenager is outstanding in this movie, I have seen no other actor before or since that so perfectly captured such empathy in a character. The casting overall from Cove, Morita and Shue was excellent, a truly classic movie.
Yeah he really was great, everyone was! And after watching this again as an adult you can see he's a complex hero, not by any means virtuous or pure. He really is a kid driven by anger, revenge, and emotion. You root for him in part because Johnny is such an over aggressor. But Miyagi takes on the father figure in such remarkable fashion that by the end of the film Daniel becomes a self-controlled and confident young man.
I don't would you like if someone forced you down a steep embankment and almost killed you either - it's actually legally classified as attempted vehiclar homicide - instead of, danny, passing on - danny fell flat on his face and was almost paralysed causing, danny, directly to lay injured half way down the hill from a period of 20 minutes to 2 hours - anyone would be ticked off with their push bike as well
I never understood Daniel's annoying Mum. Daniel: "I hate this damn bike". Lucille: 'why'd you throw your bike away..... And don't tell me about another bike accident'. Surely you would see that the bike was jinxed and that Daniel had fallen off it again.
It’s about finding balance in all aspects of one’s life.
I hope we don't take for granted his part in this legacy, in this Miyagi verse as we call it now. Mr Miyagi and Daniel/ Pat and Ralph are intertwined and are two parts of the same whole.
This film aged better than anybody would have ever imagined. ❤
This scene still gives me goose bumps every time i watch it.
Game changing scene for me in movies right here. As a kid in the 80s this scene gave me chills and still does. Acting is this movie is so genuine, it cant and will never be recreated again. To me, Karate Kid is the most perfect movie ever made. I can watch it over and over and it never gets old. My 10 year old son watches it all the time. It's his favorite movie ever.
Same here, I’m 50 now, I don’t have kids but I saw the movie in the cinema, and this scene just brings tears to my eyes. It’s wonderful. I’m so glad to hear today’s kids adore this film series too like Gen X did. Cobra Kai made me fall in love with The Karate Kid movies again (and Daniel/Ralph, since I’m still a free agent LOL ) 👍🏻🙌🏻🥋❤️

This was the "WOAH" Moment of the movie. He's been learning karate this whole time.
Mr. Miyagi reminds me of my grandfather. Tough, but kind. Very disciplined and knowledgeable.
daniels naïve child like good nature sells the wax on scene....hes so confused....it felt genuine....he didn't realize he was learning karate and neither did audiences in 1984....there was no hints....it isn't as stupid as jacket on jacket off....I could buy Daniel waxing car painting fences and sanding floors cause that's part of their deal, he has to do chores for lessons..and he is upset that he wasted the whole day doing labor and learned nothing........who the hell would train putting a jacket on and off...at least the chores killed 2 birds with 1 stone...otherwise Jackie chan might as well just teach jaden right away and tell him from the start why he is doing the jacket stuff.......Daniel wasn't suppose to know that he was eing trained while doing the chores cause then he wouldn't learn the discipline it requires of hard work to learn the basic martial arts...he wouldn't paint the fence or wax the floor the same way...
Yeah, same here with my grandpa

@@gregorbegger9291 Very true
There is ZERO magic like this in any movies nowadays. ZERO. This IS one of the most profound scenes in film history. It's film firing on all cylinders. Miyagi turned the impossible task of teaching a wimpy kid how to be a warrior in such a short amount of time, whilst keeping the thugs off his back and getting his home redone top to bottom...Miyagi turned the whole thing into a haiku. That moment when Daniel realizes he's been learning this whole time while he thought Miyagi was just taking advantage of him, he had his little closed mind blown wide open. HUMILITY. That's what it takes to be a real man, a real warrior. That learning is a lifelong journey, just shut up and let the master teach. No, you do not know everything. Miyagi never lifted a finger. He let Daniel figure it out by himself. Allowed him to suffer and achieve by himself. At that moment when Miyagi bowed and Danial bowed back, Daniel became a man. Miyagi teaches Daniel that winning is a life long process. It takes a lifetime of hard work and patience. Not just hate and brute force. That being a warrior really has nothing to do with war. Being a warrior first begins with controlling one's own self. Inside of all of us there is a war raging. Will we chose anger or love to win? That's what this scene is all about.
Well said
Although it was just acting, I’ll speak for all us boys who saw ourselves in young Daniel. To grow up dirt poor, in a broken home, looked down upon and used by others. I thank you for letting us into your home, having great patience and giving us guidance when we had none. You shaped your legacy, but not before you taught us how to shape ours. Thank you for everything, May you Rest In Peace Pat Morita.
Pat Morita nailed the old wise man role perfectly. God all three Karate Kid movies had a great feel to them and you learned something from them that made you a better person.
This is such a good scene. It's such a powerful moment when Daniel finally gets why he'd been doing all that training
I just can’t ever describe the feelings this scene calls up. You wanna talk about Iconic, that is this. Pat Morita will live forever in our hearts for this series.

I'll never forget seeing this in the theater with an audience. The reaction was collective and heartfelt. It was a good movie up until this scene. At this point it rises to whole different level. They simply don't write or make them like this anymore. God knows why. The garbage put into movies aimed at kids these days is just that. The lessons within this movie are profound.
That's true, but hey, Cobra Kai is actually pretty freaking good for a modern show!
I'm old enough to have seen this in the theater, and guess what, you are right. They don't make em like this. But that's because kids don't want em like this. Back when those movie came out, old people bitched and moaned about it just like you are doing now. This was just a dumb teen movie to most of the old heads i knew then. Just enjoy what you enjoy, ignore the rest.
Big stretch. IkModern stuff is still good like 2019 was an excellent year for movies, 1917, parasite,Ford V Ferrari, once upon a time in Hollywood. Ik this comment was before 2019 but Are you saying those films are garbage?

Very powerful scene. Also I love the way 80’s movies are shot at nighttime. Something very realistic and nostalgic about it and this scene has just that. Movies just aren’t shot like this these days.
One of the deepest scenes in movie history. The moral is that even the most repetitive, unamusing and seemingly useless tasks in our lives can prepare us for the most life threatening dangers in the future.
We learn major, critical lessons from the most miniature, trivial objectives.
Or as Confucius said, “we are what we repeatedly do”. So many fail to understand greatness is repetition.
This movie ; & this scene in particular ; spoke to so many people on so many levels . To kids that were being bullied ; to adults trying to teach kids values ; and the list could go on ! The movie spoke to nearly everyone’s heart . ❤
Best movie scene ever. A little joke, suspense, cunning and teaches a great lesson

I love how when I first saw this movie years ago that I was (as I'm sure Many others were) absolutely clueless as to the intentions on Daniel's Teacher. To see the expression on Daniel's face as he realizes that he was not only learning karate moves but exercising and strengthening his muscles was truly a cinematic work of art. We became enlightened at the same time Daniel did. I love this movie!
Arguably the most iconic moment of the movie and the moment where Daniel and Mr. Miyagi begin to bond not only as teacher and student, but also as friends.
More like father and son
When I was hurt as a kid my dad used to rub his hands together and do that while making a big show of it. We'd laugh and forget the pain.
Omg, my dad, too- true story!❤️
*THIS IS WHY WE GO TO THE MOVIES!!!*
Mr. Miyagi is my cinematic hero. I always liked this character and Pat Morita played him so well.
I just watched the movie for the first time in years, and as an adult I was able to pick up on things easy to miss as a kid. Like how the special relationship between Miyagi and Daniel. We don't know what happened to Daniel's father, but we do find out that Miyagi lost his son and his wife to childbirth complications. That explains his generosity to Daniel and the fatherly way he took Daniel under his wing. Miyagi went into full Dad mode the way a good father would. Teaching, discipline, pouring his life into Daniel. It was a beautiful thing to watch, as a father myself, to see the balance of toughness and tenderness Miyagi brought to Daniel, and by the end of the film it turned an angry, out of control kid into a balanced young man. The movie is even more touching and powerful than I remember.
Wow, best review I have seen yet! Very moving and well said! You should publish that on IMDB, Mike
It the karate kid part 2 - the viewer discovers that, myagi, was a Compulsive gambler and liar
I think, danny's, father was murdered for being a snitch and mother larusso was arrogant record keeper for the sicilian mafia - years later, mother larusso, snitched out the high level bosses and was placed in a witness relocation program - not convinced - this a woman who had a job in computers then just packs up and leaves - she's either selfish or just a plain criminal mastermind
We do know what happened to Daniels Dad... his mom, played by the same actress (Randy Heller), explains to Daniel and the audience in I think the second season in the 6th or 7th episode of the new series Cobra Kai. It is really sad.
Indeed and Miyagi experienced growth from the situation too. Circumstance threw them together. The pain of losing his Wife and Son haunted Miyagi, yet through accepting to train Daniel he is able to experience what his own Father did by way of teaching him skills in Okinawa, and what he could have done with his own son given the chance. The layering makes this film so powerful and a lasting favourite.
this was the moment we knew as a kid . daniel learned blocking . and we had are jaws on the ground . it really is the most powerful moment in the film . to this day its timeless . the story of the bond between master and apprentice . and im really looking forward to cobra ki . im hoping to see daniel and johnny maybe come together but not before one last match .
Sadly this isn't the case
Feel free to check out my unfinished anylys of the karate kid movies within the youtube video, daniel is the real bully in the karate kid - if you want to know what really happened within the karate kid movies but, I would highly recommend not to go there if you're sensitive or squeamish
Fuck that revisionist garbage

Best moment in cinematic history
He trained 3 things in 2 days here...1. the 8 classics blocking moves of Karate, 2. the endurance of Daniel-san body..3. concentration all the time...not bad !
Also patience
Honestly when i first realized he was training muscle memory into daniel without him even realizing it i was blown away.
I love Miyagi’s intensity and gravity in this scene, which he tries to impart to Daniel when he tells him always make eye contact, smacking him in the head to make sure he bows the right way, and practicing the right form for the various blocks. Takes what could be a corny scene of Daniel magically learning how to block punches just from doing repetitive painting and waxing motions and goes to the heart of the movie of finding balance, being a whole person in all aspects of your life, and showing respect for yourself and others.
Very very powerful lesson in the most simplest of practical forms. I got goosebumps watching this and I'm 27.
after watching Cobra kai
Miguel: "any way you want me to wash these windows?
Johnny: "No I don't give a shit".
"Whatever's easiest". Brilliant writing, because it jives with Cobra Kai's fighting philosophy.
And Miyagi didn't care about belt classifications - the kind of stuff the Cobra Kai jocks were all obsessed with.
Daniel asked him what kind of belt he had.
Miyagi: "Canvas. You like? Heh heh, J.C. Penney - $3.98. Hahaha!"
Free window washing
Eric Kleefeld Apparently belts mean nothing in Cobra Kai especially in season 2. Johnny is having his class start from scratch even though they won
God I love this scene so much it makes me cry. The father -son bonding and mentoring destroys my feels more now than in 1984 when I saw this in the theatre when was 13. Cobra Kai made me fall in love with this story all over again. What a gift to Generation X
Theres so much behind this film. Honor. Respect. Passion. Manners. Heart. Tradition. Mental Health. Knowledge. Learning. Truth.
The scene is amazing. As a father it hits even harder. I get the feeling Myagi had the same exact interaction with his father. He knew Daniel would eventually run out of patience and frustration would get the better of him. He learned he could 100% trust Myagi and to never take things at face value.

This movie sends chills through me .
This is one of my favorite scenes. Daniel realizes that mr. Miyagi gave him chores and told him to do them in a specific way for a reason. It was all a warm up before his real training starts
If this scene doesn't give you chills, I don't know if there's any hope for you.
The scene that made the franchise. Patience, precision, persistence, progress. There was no way in the world Cobra Kai would get away without this kind of a callback.
I just love Daniel's face as he's slowly processing and then realizing that the arm movements he would use to do the chores were actually karate movements.
Cobra Kai is WONDERFUL. It's a series that has nailed the characters but for all the people that hate Daniel, they need to come back and watch this and remember what he went through! Daniel's natural chemistry with his mentor was incredible and his POTENTIAL in Part Two was shown! I doubt Johnny could do the ice the way Daniel did!
one of the greatest scenes in cinema history, that truly blew my mind and everyones I am sure, karate is an everyday thing, repetition was everything in Daniel's training, just needed that extra push to ignite it. They don't make movies like this anymore these days. RIP Pat Morita.
When you overcome a tough obstacle in life you realize the trials and tribulations were preparing you for it.
When I saw this scene for the first time my dad was so pleased ! I was waxing his car , painting the fence painting the house and sanding the wooden floors .
30 + years of training in Japanese and Okinawan Karate--this clip gives me chills. Thank you O-Shi-Han John Anderson. My life will never be the same. You were my Miyagi.
I've been training in traditional Japanese and Okinawan Karate since I was a boy. This scene ALWAYS gets to me as it embodies the traditional values of these arts--my Sensei (John Anderson) always knew me better than I knew myself: Same as Miyagi and Daniel. This is STILL one of the most powerful scenes in cinema hands down. If you're Karate-ka, you'll understand.
I laugh every time Daniel goes down on his knees, and Mr. Miyagi just goes " aiiih..." haha!
Best movie ever! Pat Morita killed it as Mr Miyagi. Really good.
Arguably one of the best scenes in movie history. A lot of times everything isn't what it seems. I remember no one expecting what was about to happen, and it shocked a lot of people. It's where the movie really takes off.
Every time I think of Pat, I always think of this scene and his amazing job in this film, rest in peace sir.
My father would only let us watch this and the Golden Child. I didn't understand why until my adult years. This movie is phenomenal and so beautiful especially the instrumental soundtrack....my God!
Over thirty years later, and that expression on Daniel's face is STILL priceless.
I remember the first time watching this part I was laughing because I thought "He's just making him do chores", but when Mr. Miyagi throws that first punch, my jaw dropped. Now even years later the scene is still effective. Especially Daniel's reaction, he never realized he was being trained the entire time until that moment he blocked a punch. 2:29
Thumbs up if this scene STILL gives you goose bumps all these years later
the way mr miyagi teaches daniel karate using mundane tasks and muscle memory is just full of the exaggerated swagger of an asian elder. it gives me goosebumps every time he does it.
I haven't seen this scene for 40 years and when it got to the point when Miyagi does the punches, my eyes have completely unexpectedly, filled with tears. What a great scene.
One of the greatest cinematic scenes, period.
I've always loved that head slap in movies when the student failed to look the teacher in the eye while bowing. Especially in this movie and Enter the Dragon.
That's "Cover-Your-Ass: 101" right there.
Raixor2nd if that head slap happened today, child services would get a call and it would be all over Twitter and UA-cam.
Millennials are such pu$$ies today
Miyagi's kiais are awesome. It shows the seriousness for him passing down karate.
Miyagi “Now show me sand the floor”
Daniel “How did you do that?”
Miyagi “SHOW!”
Gives me goosebumps every time.
I saw this in the movie theater when it first came out. I can remember hearing the audience saying things like “omg” and “wow” once we all realized the lesson that was being taught. A few applauses even. And at the end of the movie, everyone and I mean everyone stood up and gave the movie a standing ovation. I’ve never been to a movie theater since then where that has ever happened. The good ole days....
Great demonstration of how karate is a way of life and a way of thinking rather than just about defense or attacking
"Always look eye.....come back tomorrow...." RIP MASTER
So. Freaking. Awesome. Glad I grew up when I did. :)
Such a brilliantly constructed scene bring tears to your eyes.
Pat Morita's impression of an immigrant who can't speak complete English was so great it made people forget he's actually an American standup comedian who's more fluent in American English than most Americans.
That moment Daniel-san realised that all those chores he did made sense and to never doubt Mr Miyagi again.

This scene really teaches you don’t judge a book by its cover and to look at things differently than you normally would.
Scenes like this elevate films
One of my top 3 favourite movie scenes, of all time ... it always gives me goosebumps
One great minor detail is that in Okinawa kids are traditionally only taught karate from their fathers. Mr Miyagi lost his child, and Daniel lost his dad.
So in many ways this is two people finding the father/son they had taken from them
