    If you do tutorials again, and please do, please paint each independent piece of pipe (blocks connected to eachother and located in between 2 or more bearings), like you did at 3:37! It makes things so much easier to understand. Such a simple tweak can be a great visual aid!

    In an engine, cylinders usually combust one-by one. It's rare that two combust at the same time. For example, in a four-cylinder engine the ignition order can be 4-2-3-1.

    With a lot of engines the valve gear is inbetween the frames. E.g. GS&WR 101 Class. Every steam locomotive has valve gear.

    • @crazynachos4230
      @crazynachos4230 Рік тому

      Not all of them actually, down steam engines are actually turbine locomotives. Although most do use a kind of gear

    • @Spud607
      @Spud607 Рік тому

      @crazynachos4230 well anything that isn't conventional may not have gear but you get what I mean. Turbines made up a verybsmall minority.

    The way this one works is showing Kan's big brain, he has invented a completely different way of it working! The proper system changes the timing on the valve gear instead of forcing the wheel into a direction, he may know this by now though because of Hyce.

  • @Shipwright1918
    @Shipwright1918 5 років тому

    Bear in mind that a steam loco's valve gear doesn't only determine what direction the engine runs, but also the length of time steam is being admitted into the cylinder with each stroke back and forth.
    You use full gear (front or back) to get started, and as the loco accelerates, you pull the valve gear back towards center to cut off the steam earlier and work more by expansion of the steam than by volume.
    If you left it in full gear all the time, you'd be eating up more steam than the fireman could make, and the engine would be working against itself with back-pressure, basically not being able to push all the exhaust steam out in time before pulling in fresh steam from the boiler.

  • @rjc0234
    @rjc0234 6 років тому +1

    this is lovely, but not quite how the system works (though I have just been spending the past few days trying to figure out how they work, and there really isn't much info beyond websites that look like they were made in the late 90's!)
    what is amazing is how it still works! some real backward engineering right there! fantastic!

    • @Frankie_Fish
      @Frankie_Fish 5 років тому

      Yes, it is not nudging the crank-arm at the wheels in a certain direction. It is only shifting the valve inside the piston so the timing is different, that way it can run in reverse.
      And the problem with the deadpoint (the maximum or minimum point of action) of the piston and the (fly)wheel is solved by placing the crankarm of the wheel on the other side of the train at a 90° angle. So when one set of wheels and piston is at it's maximum/minimum throw/action, the other set is in the middle of the throw/action. No matter the position the train stopped at , it can always start driving again without it having stalled.

  • @OprichnikStyle
    @OprichnikStyle 6 років тому

    kinda correct the reverse gear turns the return crank (shown in your video) but it also moves the valve rod (valve is the one that decides wich side of the piston the steam goes) so changing the reverse gear to the extremes makes steampass trhough the valve piston a lot more time thus more steam on the piston, that's good for condensation in there and making the first wheel turning but then you've got to turn that reverse gear closer to the middle so the valve piston let's less steam go into the piston and saving precious steam (this gas expands A LOT).

    • @OprichnikStyle
      @OprichnikStyle 6 років тому

      so in the reverse gear, going to the extremes is like the first gears on a car, the low gears. Then when you already get the inertia you can change the link nearer the neutral point and it will go faster but it wont help in the first movements. further from the neutral = slower but with more traction. Nearer the neutral point = faster

    Actually, all steam engines have valve gear, walshearts, baker and stephenson being the most common. Walshearts was made to have an easy to maintain valve gear outside the frame. The large back and forth yellow piece was connected to either a "johnson bar" or a power reverse. The johnson bar was a mechanical reverse, typically a lever in the cab that when pushed forward, would make the train go forward. After a while, you would have to pull the bar back to about 25-50% forward to go faster. A power reverse used steam from the boiler to changd the position of the "bar"

    The valve gear does not give an initial push, that deadzone is counteracted by the wheels pistons being 90° out of phase which remove any deadzone, and the valve gear's purpose is to reverse and decrease steam admission at highers speeds/lower loads, thus reducing the steam consumed

    To stop it chugging you would need the second drive in conectionits why steam engines have 2 or 4 driving cylinders.
    But to make it's simple for scrap mechanic look up the Shay locomotives, their steam drive is 3 cylinders pointed down to a geared shaft to drive the axles. It seems like the best option.

    Another system used was the stephensons valve gear, which was an earlier system. Also, as other people have said, this isn't a true representation of walhscherts (its pronounced wall shirts by the way) but it is most likely as close as you could get.

    • @kANGaming

      Raaabon Laaanon yes the stevenson method has the valve gear between the axles. What I like about this method is it is completely external to the chassis of the train
