Hey, I'm only in middle school band and have only been taking snare/tenor classes for a little over a year and still don't understand the vocals except for "Ta". Could you please explain?
I'm extremely late, but the yamaha sextets aren't anywhere as heavy as Dynasty tenors, but still take a long time to get used to and can destroy you if you don't spend a lot of time with them. Of course, pearls are much lighter than Yamahas.
Unbelievably impressive, and beyond what nearly anyone can hope to accomplish. However, unfortunate that we're straying toward quantity instead of quality. Never once did drums 1 or 2 land in the sweet spots - center strikes every time.
Hey guys im not dumb ok, im playing tenor for my high school this year but ours are different from dci lol, so. When you play a "shot" on tenor, is it a shot like on snare or is it just hitting the rim in a certain spot?
Silver Kunai yeah thanks i figured it out, but i made snare, tenor and bass but we had enough snares, not even tenors and i could hardly carry tenor so i took one for the team, or line, and went on bass for now:(
i play clarinet in my high school marching band and i've been thinking about drumline and i like the quads do you think i should switch like it there a certain technique or something
aiden brandenburg there is a certain technique for every percussion instrument like there is for your clarinet and every other instrument. But it is a lot more intricate and difficult than it seems, especially when you need perfection like you do with marching drums. Took me years to develope good technique and I'm still no where near perfect. If you wish to switch, I would get in the habit of just sitting down and practicing basic warnups for a long time before even looking at music to develope that good technique.
aiden brandenburg there definitely is a certain technique for quads but its not impossible to switch. I was in the exact same situation as you are in now believe it or not. I play clarinet in concert band at my high school I and switched to quads in marching band. Now I have been playing quads in marching band for 2 years and I have started to play quads in indoor percussion. My school has chop sessions with the percussion director before marching band starts to show all of the new students how to play quads/snare/bass before auditions. I was introduced to all of the basic technique needed to play quads at a high school level at these chop sessions. If there is any way to get in front of your percussion director or an experienced player that has played quads before at your school, that would be a great way to learn how to play quads and hopefully play in your school's drumline. Also, the internet is a great resource to learn basic technique. Good Luck!
B, D, E, A, F#, B (Low -> High). Keep in mind, this tuning is nearly irrelevant if one plays in the center of the head like was demonstrated in this video.
Hi Ben! If you would like to demonstrate how to properly play quads the Bluecoats have auditions all over the country! I'll be at the one in Canton at the end of November, hope to see you there. Also that is not the correct tuning scheme. :)
willburr13 I've been told by band directors and leaders that they generally change heads every week. Not sure if that's true though. Wouldn't be surprising if it was.
If he was using my schools drums he would be playing in the un tuned spot we were taught to play at the edges because thats where it was tuned. I guess. It a thing so the tenor in dci have a lower chance of missing a note so they don't have to worry about accuracy as much.
Zoryzer The accuracy matters a lot actually. Generally speaking when it comes to tenor drums, the playing areas of the drum head which are called "zones" lie between the center of the drum and the rim (but a bit more towards the rim). The "zones" are where you get the most, and usually the best sound out of the drums, as the center of the tenor drums are basically dead zones with a much lower quality of sound. But in some instances it is ok to play in the center, or "dead zone" of the drums as the sound it makes might fit the music better. This show is one of those instances as the more short and dead sounds fit more with the music than the longer and fuller sounding notes you would get out of the proper playing zone. And if you notice with your point on accuracy, they are still for the most part hitting the same general area consistently without missing. If they didn't have accuracy and missed they're intended spot it would change the sound quite a bit. But yes, 9 times out of 10 you should be playing in the proper playing zones no matter if in dci or high school marching band. It's just a matter of what sound you need for the music.
I can't even fathom the hype vocals rue Nani nah would have had to this show.
awesome Rue tribute vocal at 4:25, haha
rue didn't make the vocals tho...
+The Marksman a tribute to Rue, not the vocal maybe?
+The Marksman It was a vocal Rue used in 2015
+Nikolas A Yupp! Watch last year's finals tenor cam
This percussion writing staff though. I applaud you. You guys deserved the win, I am so happy that you got it. Also, HOLY CHOPS.
"five six seven nine ten eleven would you slice me off a little piece of that"- RUEEE!1!!!
Tray Tree I was thinking the exact same thing !
4:28
God I love the tuning of the quads this year
agree so hard
They're the same as last year lol
if i recall correctly, they play out of the zones for the dry short sound to fit the style of the music
Mr. BeatsMachine this show was supposed to have the indoor style and shoe design
*show
i love the little nod to Rue at 4:27 lmao
Hispanic Genuis10 He meant that it was a thing that Rue did.

Mikethedude22 a little late but I think he is talking about the flag reflection off of drum 2.
So nobodies gonna talk about that tenor split 4:09 or the basses at 4:40
The bases like holy
Truly a case of basses sounding like they were played in like some software, amazing sound, timing, and spacing.

He lifts the drum up with like no struggle. Do you have any idea how heavy those are holy shit
I play tenors and they're not that heavy. It comes with practice
also those tenors are balls heavy so thats kinda impressive how easilly he can set it on the harness
Justin Fife Yeah I think Yamahas are generally lighter

Thanks for the kind words bruh!😊😀😀
Does anyone know, on average, how often these top world lines tick? I heard a few rims and wondered how often all ticks are.

4:30 just like the 1st quad cam vid lol
My section leader tried playing the tenor opener and ended up scratching the drum 2 head it was funny
lmao
BLOOOOOO
Also, the drums look much smaller this year
Hes wearing the go-pro on his head, last year Reuel put it on his harness so it looks smaller in this.
how many heads do they go through a year? My band's drumline goes through 2 A year, but they dont play nearly as much as these DCI band.
willburr13 I've been told by band directors and leaders that they generally change heads every week. Not sure if that's true though. Wouldn't be surprising if it was.
It’s 2018 and people are still calling this “band” ?? Seriously?
Your gamer tag my buddy
Anyone know why he was mic'd? I know a few snares were as well...
+Dr. Oshawott that's amazing. Such a powerful brassline.
Where is he mic'd?

Is it a head mount?
Tyrant Of Darkness yes it’s a head mount
