The contras get a little love as far as exposure goes in this show with that little feature in the first movement and being right up front a few bars later but Down Side Up's contra feature pales in comparison to the awesomeness of Tilt's and Kinetic Noise's I feel. Even so Bluecoats will always be king of contras for me cause of how great they use them.
Yeah I love that one too! 2014 takes the crown for me cause of the ridiculous range those contras had that year! They went crazy high in their register.
Dude … honestly have no words. It’s so easy to sit in the high up seats and enjoy this beast of a show but to see how hard you guys were going down there. A true honor to have marched with you guys last week- I have all the respect in the world for your quality as a performer
awsome video😄. It has to be so difficult to march in bluecoats. I haven't been in a dci group, but i love watching dci. I am marching with contras, so i understand how they are. But still awesome video. keep up the great work
Much more in-tune on the Yamaha horns. We mostly use it for longer tones, although there are some parts of the show where the 1-2 fingering was more in-tune based on the chord
I marched (ahem) contra in the 90's and wow have the shows come a long way! Wish we had go pro's and breathable/quick dry uniforms. When I saw you guys in Jupiter, FL I knew 100% you were going to win. Congrats! Seriously, people don't understand what it's like to run around a field while playing a 30 lb blindspot without knocking your teeth out on another corps member or prop! And now they can see for themselves!
Yeah I would have loved seeing some of those old shows in first person! And let me tell you the breathable uniforms were awesome when you got past the non-traditional look haha. But thank you so much! Glad you got to see it in person, even if it was in the Florida heat :P
same here. baritone in the mid 90s. the drill and demand appears to be much more difficult these days, but oh that G bugle sound. if only we could bring that back.
Every tuba cam I've seen from bloo the past few years has had just 3rd valve pressed whenever the opportunity comes up, is that just an intonation thing with the yamaha's or is that a uniform thing?
I really hope you reply, but could you tell me the brand of contra that is? I'm planning on buying one in the near future and I want to know what's the best I can get.
Hey I'm a section leader for contras and barritones and I'm wanting to buy some of those things around the bell to protect them(contras not barritones as they can hold them themselves) where and can I buy those at
danny marokas I've played contra and Sousa and although contra is harder because of commands and stuff I think Sousa is harder, seemed heavier, also a bit different to play.
danny marokas my high school marches fieldshow and we only have sousaphones, commands are easy on Sousa because of the lack of mobility. Our show had movements we physically couldn't do because the instrument would be knocked out of our mouths, mobility wise Contras are much more convenient and lighter. You can angle your bell more comfortably and project forwards rather than through a bunch of tubing. So for field show Contras are much much more efficient than sousaphones. Tone wise Contras all the way btw
Calling it a Sousaphone would be incorrect. Sousaphone is just a specification of a tuba that wraps around the player and is used typically for marching. Although a contrabass bugle is also a marching horn, it does not fall under that specification. Technically the BBb horns corps play on are not contrabass bugles, but the name has just stuck through the switch to BBb horns. The accepted terms would be contra, or simply a marching tuba.
Sabrina Eddy I was a clarinet player for 6 years, been playing tuba for six months and already first chair, it doesn’t matter what instrument you start on, it matters how hard you’re willing to work
MrThetubaman Are Contras as unwieldy (in terms of weight and density of tubing) as they look? I ask because I play a Sousa and I'm trying to imagine what marching with one of those tubas would be like for college
+MrThetubaman Agreed. And sousaphones just look silly imo. Back when I was a little squirt (like seriously 3-4 years old) I would call them "funny trumpets" because 1: I didn't know the actual name, and 2: they looked so darn goofy.
Milo Johnson I like sousas but for field show I would prefer contras because they're actually sometimes lighter than sousas, plus you can actually move around lol
Actually, I can hold my breath for a long time. Playing the tuba at loud dynamics with my best tone and intonation while running around the field at 240 bpm takes just a liiiiiiiiiittle bit more effort.
Now that's a great example of stagger breathing.
:)

2010 is my favorite contra soli. I don't think that anything will top it, but I really hope that they will!
Yeah I love that one too! 2014 takes the crown for me cause of the ridiculous range those contras had that year! They went crazy high in their register.
+Brick tator I love 2012s soli
I think the one in 2014 went to a D above the staff
Ya it went stupid high. Literally if I didn't know better I could swear that was a baritone playing that upper note.
I can guarantee before everyone run-through or show that beginning ass slap happens.

Congrats on the win for your age-out!
Thank you!
God you made that little line at 11:32 sound magical
I can see Ben gunnarson
Awesome show and a great season! I love the Tuba section!!!
as someone who marches euph, playing tuba looks exhausting. props.
Perfection. Omg. Not a single flub even in the high register
Incredible work contras!
awsome video😄. It has to be so difficult to march in bluecoats. I haven't been in a dci group, but i love watching dci. I am marching with contras, so i understand how they are. But still awesome video. keep up the great work
those tubas look so good
Amazing! Great cam:)
Those low notes made my ovaries explode.
I'll see you in court.
jk this was awesome!!!!!
You might want to go to the hospital
9:38 WILLIEEEEEEEEEE
incredible audio
TUBAS RULE!!
5:55 my kneecaps hurt from watching that
I'm loving the alternate fingering for the G and D's
Much more in-tune on the Yamaha horns. We mostly use it for longer tones, although there are some parts of the show where the 1-2 fingering was more in-tune based on the chord
MrThetubaman same for me... I play a euph bari hybrid and it's way more in tune to play 3 in stead of 1-2 for g and d
Is it hard having to bring the contra up and down all the time?
I marched (ahem) contra in the 90's and wow have the shows come a long way! Wish we had go pro's and breathable/quick dry uniforms. we actually beat Blue Coats that year by 0.1 LOL
Joe Williams lmao try a 60 pound bass with no forward vision. say good by to your back
same here. baritone in the mid 90s. the drill and demand appears to be much more difficult these days, but oh that G bugle sound. if only we could bring that back.
Is there anyone in guard with a head cam?
Where the hell did all your air go?
Good job
Tuba luv
Angel Ramirez tubas ftw
Every tuba cam I've seen from bloo the past few years has had just 3rd valve pressed whenever the opportunity comes up, is that just an intonation thing with the yamaha's or is that a uniform thing?
It's an intonation thing
Even though I've listened to so many other recordings, it's still weird to hear the end of the ballad and not hear the crowd go wild after the wink
at 8:34 how do you keep such good sound quality even though you're jumping around and stuff? it's amazing!
Lots of strategic breathing and practice. You mostly have to worry about the landing and absorbing the shock with your legs. Thank you though!
Geez, that pleeay (I don't know how to spell that, but i can say it xP) at 5:55 is fucking crazy dude
That amazing tone though,I really need to work on my my embouchure and tone cause it good and bad at some times lol Any tips ?
Air
I recommend working with breathing gym exercises. Also just doing lots of long tones!
From 9:54 to 9:59 thats when the sound ends sounded like a retro futureistic beat
bit late but do you have any Tuba advice? (Currently a Trumpet player but I plan to switch over)
BrandonMS Yes stay on trumpet
I really hope you reply, but could you tell me the brand of contra that is? I'm planning on buying one in the near future and I want to know what's the best I can get.
It's a Yamaha! Imo the best marching tuba made and used currently, closely followed by System Blue if you are really into the 4th valve option.
MrThetubaman Thank you!I'll most likely buy the Yamaha.
is that Willie at 9:32 ?
Hey I'm a section leader for contras and barritones and I'm wanting to buy some of those things around the bell to protect them(contras not barritones as they can hold them themselves) where and can I buy those at
LOVE THE PETAL
what flower? where?
what's the orange strip around the bell called?
Levi Fillmore thanks, do you know where you can get them
Where do they get those bell covers
RB6 PJGienger a friend of our teacher made them. They actually started with this shiny golden fabric over the yellow but we ended up taking that off
"Dut dut dut"
Now, only pressing the 3th valve? Or am I blind? Cuz sometimes the GoPro does not record the 1st valve...
#Edit: Or am I getting too bad at tuba? 😑
3_n He is using the 3rd valve It is an alternate fingering. For First and second. Valve. So you can play Notes like. G And d.With the third valve Only
is that the trumpet player with the go pro at 8.29?
alison senpai no hes playing the flugel horn solo at 8 minutes
Your tuba 3 or four valves?
Daniel Meyer it's 3 it looks like 4 but it's just a where you put your pinky
Daniel Meyer what kind of tuba is that?
Question, why do you use third valve for your D?
Much more in tune on the horn!
1+2=3
I'm in band, I play trumpet, I'm thinking about doing marching band, any advice or tips??
Be willing to work hard and put in effort without quiting, and hey, atleast you dont have to hold up a tuba
Haha, trumpet is a lot of work too, we haven't even gotten to playing because my class mates won't stop talking all the time 😂😂
it all depends
Lit Otter 5 lbs (max) vs 29 lbs lol
Orange these tubas have 4 valves and are system blues aka the best marching tubas that cost 30 grand weigh around 55 lbs
How much harder is it to March contra as compared to sousaphone?
danny marokas Well obviously, susaphones don't have any up or down stuff, so contras are harder in that regard
hi_itsNathan well yeah I figured that, but just how much harder
danny marokas I've played contra and Sousa and although contra is harder because of commands and stuff I think Sousa is harder, seemed heavier, also a bit different to play.
The_Actual_Ghost_King Souza defiantly has a different feel, when compared to concert tuba, how does a contra play
danny marokas my high school marches fieldshow and we only have sousaphones, commands are easy on Sousa because of the lack of mobility. Our show had movements we physically couldn't do because the instrument would be knocked out of our mouths, mobility wise Contras are much more convenient and lighter. Tone wise Contras all the way btw
willie at 9:38?
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Yeppers. 😍
I thought it's called a contra bugle?
Maxwell Osborn it is but calling a Sousa or a contra a tuba is still correct as they are both variants of the tuba made for marching
Camden MacIver Ah I see
are there no woodwinds in this band???
LunaticGriffin65 DCI doesn’t use woodwinds. Only brass and percussion
Brennon Corbitt NOOOO!! I guess I'll never be in this
LunaticGriffin65 You can learn a brass instrument. What do you play.
oh the contradiction!!!!!
lol
I'm coming up to the canton audition camp in November, and I'm auditioning for the contra line. Any tips or advice?
Good luck fam
Did you get in?
Hey I was there too!
A NON DRUMLINE MEMBER DUTTINF CORRECTLY???
Girl crying at 9:45
Bryan it’s part of the show
I play clairinet sucks i will never gt to be in something like this except for marching band in highschool
Sabrina Eddy I was a clarinet player for 6 years, been playing tuba for six months and already first chair, it doesn’t matter what instrument you start on, it matters how hard you’re willing to work
Learn. Trumpet or mellophone
Thine tuba be dented
As much as we don't like it happening, it happens.
Rubik Builder LLC a dent less tuba is not a tuba
You run around with it for 12 hours a day all summer and try not to dent it lol
those are hard to hold
Ryan Tanner 55 lbs
Sacc they are not 55 pounds they are about at 35 pouds max
Edward Elric that's completely wrong my dude look it up
Sacc ok my bad 25 to 35 pounds
they are not 55 pounds
Tubas have it the worst while stand at attention and in trail
So I gotta ask... Why no sousaphones?
They have a characteristically undesirable sound and do not allow for the fluidity of motion required for such a high intensity activity.
MrThetubaman
Are Contras as unwieldy (in terms of weight and density of tubing) as they look? I ask because I play a Sousa and I'm trying to imagine what marching with one of those tubas would be like for college
You wont use them in college ( i think) contras are primarily used in DCI
Levi Fillmore
Currently, the college I am going to is very competitive in state competitions; as such, they use contras.
Is there a reason why you would use tubas instead of sousaphones
except they're not actually contras/bugles anymore.
That's not a tuba how I know a tuba, but boy does that look fun to play
i3su _ that's a tuba 😂
i3su _ it's just in different form
i3su _ that's a tuba. You're probably thinking of a sousaphone
I play tuba in a brass band, but it's the traditional upright version, I've just never seen ones that look like this
yea it's easier to hold upright while sitting down, but not standing up. And they want the sound to project to the stands.
sousaphones are better imo, but tubas are still very close second. super cool
I respect your opinion, but there is no way this level of marching and playing could be done on a sousaphone.
+MrThetubaman Agreed.
And sousaphones just look silly imo.
Back when I was a little squirt (like seriously 3-4 years old) I would call them "funny trumpets" because 1: I didn't know the actual name, and 2: they looked so darn goofy.
Milo Johnson most marching bands drum cores use conrtas because they have a better sound and don't they don't look funny
Milo Johnson I like sousas but for field show I would prefer contras because they're actually sometimes lighter than sousas, plus you can actually move around lol
yeah but i feel like sousas are better for non-competition bands
dang bro this guy can’t hold his breather for more than 4 counts
Actually, I can hold my breath for a long time. Playing the tuba at loud dynamics with my best tone and intonation while running around the field at 240 bpm takes just a liiiiiiiiiittle bit more effort.
