Huge visual difference between even the best IPS and OLED. And the battery life improvement really comes down to the battery capacity getting upgraded from 40Wh to 50Wh. The OLED screen actually gobbles up more power, considering the much higher peak brightness and higher refresh rates.

Your desk light set up was washing out the color differences between the two somewhat, taking away from how drastic of a difference it reallt is. You can see an example when your light moves off Mario's face on SM64
The color difference is probably due to a software parameter problem on the Switch (limited rgb range 16-255 instead of full range 0-255) because otherwise the displays are identical and it shouldn't grey the blacks.

IIRC there's a setting in developer settings that you can switch to the old fps and refresh rate settings, I do hope it is there cause that 30/60 switching is gonna be annoying.
Great vid man, subscribed! I have the LCD SD but just ordered the OLED SD as well. I have a arcade cabinet I built around the steam deck so the OD deck will stay with it.
Dude those battery drain test wow, thank you for showing those. How long do you think it takes to get a 50% and 100% charge after its been drained to turning off?
It takes a bit to get going from 0%, but it shoots up to ~60-70% in a little over 40 minutes once it gets north of 10%. The final stretch slows down a lot.
The battery times are insane, especially if you use things like Power tools. Like, by downclocking the memory through power tools I was able to get nearly 10 hours of battery out of a gbc game, having it running at only 4.4 watts. The idea that through the OLED I could end up with like 12 or more hours blows my mind.
OMFG i was waiting for someone to make a video like this .. this is the main thing i wanted the OLED emulation from psx with crt filter to yuzu switch ! LETS GOOOOO BABY IT LOOKS LIKE A BEAUTY 🤌🏽🔥
For me, personally, the AYN Odin 2 is the "Ultimate Emulation Handheld". As a man over 40, PS2 / GC and all pervious systems is what brings back nostalgia. No real need for PS3 or Xbox. Plus the Odin has forever battery life and isn't a chore to carry. Switch emulation is a bonus (Link's Awakening, Metroid Dread, Hades, Celeste, Blasphemous, Axiom Verge all work perfectly)
Switch emulation for games like Hades and Blasphemous on Steam? Interesting. I hope I can emulate Super Mario RPG on the new OLED, got it working on my PC but it crashed in Ryujinx in 4k upscale
Excited to get this soon. Ended up getting the 1TB LE version since I just really liked that color wave. I just have an unrelated question: what is the skin you have on your original SD? It looks so cool!
While I'm still *very* salty about recently finishing the mods I wanted to do to my OG Steam Deck JUST in time for them to release a refreshed model that's better in almost every major way, I can't pretend like I don't want to buy the new OLED model. The screen, the battery, and the Wi-Fi card were always my biggest gripes other than overall performance, and they literally fixed all 3 of them. It's probably unlikely, but if there are any good Black Friday/Holiday sales for the OLED model then I might not be able to resist that new screen and battery.
Have you tried Retroarch with HDR (both in system settings and in the Retroarch software) enabled? That is what I use on my OLED TV and it makes games really pop, like they do on my PVM CRT. Curious of it all works as it should on the OLED deck!
Just got finished getting my OLED deck setupm fired up MVC2 on redream and its the best I can ever remember it looking, the resolution being to near parity of it's native hardware output. Best handheld by far.
Thanks for another great video! One criticism though: please stop saying you can vsync 60fps to a 90Hz screen. That's a 1.5x frame pacing factor, so while you can technically vsync it (as you can any frame rate at any higher refresh rate), frame times will be very uneven (for every three frames displayed, you'll render two, but only the first and third will be new frames as the newly rendered frame finishes around the middle of the time frame 2 is displayed, causing extremely uneven frame pacing). Upwards vsync scaling only works at integer increments, so for something to fit both 30 and 60fps it must be a refresh rate that is an integer multiple of both - i.e. 120, 180, 240, etc.
I didn't say it would be perfect, but it does work better on other handhelds than it does in the RA example that I showed. This is why VRR panels are such a big deal for gaming devices, because you don't need to worry about if an emulator has issues (RetroArch in this example). 60FPS / 60Hz should have worked for 60/30 mixed content with RA like it does with all of the other emulators that I filmed in this video. RA is just bad.
Nice video :) just ordered an oled... never got around to installing emulators on my previous deck, but I'll have to do that on the new one. I want to play Gremlins 2 :P
1. Was the yuzu battery test on handheld or docked mode? 2. So RetroArch is a no for now? Unless you enjoy switching refresh rate. 3. With steam os 3.5, is disabling SMT still needed for best emulation performance?
1. Handheld. 2. RA seems to be a little crap. I default to 60 as default and make per-game profiles to 30. If a game uses mixed content for FMVs, you have to switch up to 60. I would assume they will try to fix this. 3. It is not necessary like it was before.
Both Steam Deck versions are great for emulation! Interestingly, both Steam Deck versions still have the same Steam-based issues since launch & unique to the Steam Deck for missing functionality. It's fine for people who don't use Steam & instead do mostly emulation, but for the few of us who love Steam as a platform & want to use it on the handheld Steam-based device, the problems since launch still persist. Frustrating to watch so many other things get fixed & patched so often by Valve but not Steam itself on the Steam Deck (i.e., if the OLED fixed those issues I'd get one on top of my existing Steam Decks).
I hope this video helps if you are thinking about buying this for emulation 🎮

Bro. Trying to order this thing. Calm down with your timing. Give me an hour :-p - Appreciate your review on the screens. It really sealed my decision to get the etched one again.
Got the Limited Edition. Had to have them refund 700.00 in wallet cash back as I used another card in the nonsense the first thirty minutes were! So excited to play all the things!
Dragon Quest VIII looks insane on that screen.
As an early adopter, it’s hard not to feel a little bit cheated by the refresh only one year in. I wish I’d waited for this one.
Closer to 2 years really, doesn't seem too unreasonable.
@@mahoganywolf8843 Agree to disagree, I suppose.
Awesome job on the video! Thanks for all the information, I’m excited to play some retro games on this once mine comes in
Dude those battery drain test wow, thank you for showing those. How long do you think it takes to get a 50% and 100% charge after its been drained to turning off?
It takes a bit to get going from 0%, but it shoots up to ~60-70% in a little over 40 minutes once it gets north of 10%. The final stretch slows down a lot.
Having the right ally for the heavy stuff and this for emulation is also on my mind
Outstanding job! Such detailed comparison and info. You rock!
18:02 Brought back a classic that I didn't know was on Saturn.
Just put my order in, looking forward to the OLED!
2:22 Those deep blacks on that DKC intro is so good.
It's why I made this video. Perfect isolation.
@@TakiUdonBravo!
I'm so so so happy and elated that I waited man.. I cannot wait to get my oled steam deck
Had emudeck on my oled for a month now and wow its made my favourite handheld even better.
Yeah, nice to see an emulation only vid on the oled SD 👍
Wow thats a lotta effort! Testing so many games and they look beautiful! I wish i had that
This video really made me want an orange desk... and all new cables. This gent's audio and charging cables look sturdier than my house.
Excited to get this soon. Ended up getting the 1TB LE version since I just really liked that color wave.
I just have an unrelated question: what is the skin you have on your original SD? It looks so cool!
That speedy Gonzalez game may say it's a super Nintendo game but the graphics really remind me of Ristar on the Genesis.
I was waiting for this video 👍😎
While I'm still *very* salty about recently finishing the mods I wanted to do to my OG Steam Deck JUST in time for them to release a refreshed model that's better in almost every major way, I can't pretend like I don't want to buy the new OLED model. The screen, the battery, and the Wi-Fi card were always my biggest gripes other than overall performance, and they literally fixed all 3 of them. It's probably unlikely, but if there are any good Black Friday/Holiday sales for the OLED model then I might not be able to resist that new screen and battery.
Was the last system you didnt show supposed to be switch or xbox 360? Great video btw
omg you got GC and PS2 games working on this? I am so sold
5 watts for simple games is _insane_. And I'm sure it can go even lower. Really pumped for this.
I just got my shipping notice for my LE version. Fingers crossed there will be another hall effect pair of sticks for this new OLED version.
I'm getting this as my first Steam Deck the moment it actually gets to my country
Nice video.
Thank you!
Liked and subscribed.
I already own a miyoo mini for my old school emulation needs.
My Steam Deck will be used mostly to play my back log of older pc games circa 2014-2022
Have you tried Retroarch with HDR (both in system settings and in the Retroarch software) enabled? That is what I use on my OLED TV and it makes games really pop, like they do on my PVM CRT. Curious of it all works as it should on the OLED deck!
I'm curious about this too especially in combination with CRT Scanline filters.
Everybody talking about the screen, for me, it's the battery improvement amazing.
Superb device all around. Got my order in.
yeah, i streamed cyberpunk 2077, max graphics, and full ray tracing to my lcd deck and it looked incredible. i can only imagine it the oled deck!
I build a really nice 1TB retro gaming SD card for Umbrella Arcades. It’s one of the few Batocera builds available that works on the OLED Steam Deck.
Very informative vid - thank you!!
Just got finished getting my OLED deck setupm fired up MVC2 on redream and its the best I can ever remember it looking, the resolution being to near parity of it's native hardware output. Best handheld by far.
Amazing video man! You deserve more!
RA is just bad.
respect for including Vandal Hearts in the sample of PS1 games running on this.
Great video, as always dude!!
Great video! But why would you emulate the Game Boy version of DKC instead of the SNES version? XD
Thorough and well-considered. Thank you!
Nice video :) just ordered an oled... never got around to installing emulators on my previous deck, but I'll have to do that on the new one. I want to play Gremlins 2 :P
The sound is amazing
Super hyped I got a 1TB Limited Edition OLED to replace my 512GB LCD
That Mystic Quest you displayed is a sleeper. I beat that game many times back in the day
I wish it got a remake to increase the difficulty and flesh out the story. Love the game and the music.
Mario Kart DS looks absolutely gorgeous on that screen!
Tremendous video. Thanks for this!
I purchased the oled 512 since it has the glossy screen. Planning on selling my old steam deck with the Matte screen soon.
Am sold. I bought the mid-tier one.
it's just very funny to me how you include the game SD in the top corner when it comes to Nintendo switch xD
Frustrating to watch so many other things get fixed & patched so often by Valve but not Steam itself on the Steam Deck (i.e., if the OLED fixed those issues I'd get one on top of my existing Steam Decks).
dang... i wasn't gonna buy one... but now that the battery is this good i might have to. battery is the life blood for me. plus like poppy colors
Wow such a fire skin, where did you get that RX skin !!! 😮😮😮
Finally an emulation-centric review!
all we need is a steam deck mini oled option so I dont gotta give money to aya
Deck oled lite. Really copy nintendo.
