The 1st episode skipped this info or it might provide it later but Jin woo isn't a hunter just for the pay, the Hunter's Association provides aid for the Hunters and their families if they meet their demise in those dungeon raids and jin woo's mother has a sickness which stems from the portals releasing magic into the world. So she's been in a coma for years and needs a special "magic life support machine" to stay alive and it's of course paid for by the Association. So for his mother to live, Jin woo needs to keep his Hunter's ID or he won't be eligible for aid. So he must atleast do some raids to maintain his registration. And of course any money he makes by selling the loot from said raids, he puts towards his sister's college fund.

It adapted up to first half of chapter 4, but they added some things that came much later. Mostly character introductions, that’s the reason why they seemed so out of place. I would have liked if they skipped those introductions and adapted chapter 4 completely. If I remember correctly that was how it was originally released too, since theirs a big plot twist at the end and now I feel like the pacing of ep2 will be quite weird since chapter 5 is actually a huge tone shift
In the light novel, it talks about the Jeju island and how they failed at first trying to take it. In the Manwha they didn’t show the jeju island until they returned with Jinwoo, and even then they spoke about the characters that died there the first time, like the guy who has the lightning powers that’s never been seen in the Manwha but was shown in the first ep of the anime.
I was thinking that too when I watched the episode the first time. However, after watching reactions from people who have not read the manhwa or novels, it actually made sense and gave better clarity on what was actually happening in the world. Why there are gates, why he was there and what the motive is for going there. It was cool and I think pretty well done after watching it again. I am excited to see some of the bigger scenes like icy elf bois arc and giant murder spider. This is all necessary for the world building and making it make sense.
The manwha sucked ass at character and worldbuilding development. i really hope they don't follow the manwha and just follow the light novel instead, which is 100x better than the manwha, and it even has better character and worldbuilding development

they are following the novel. but they used the manhwa art of the characters. The one who made the art is different from the author. Dubu (Rest in Piece) the artist and CEO of redice studio just adapted the novel and made it a manhwa they didn't make the story. and judging from the first ep. it seems like they are following the novel.@@envyjosh
Im looking for to the rest of the season, they changed up the first chapter by adding some supplementary scenes but I think it’s important to take it kinda slow while they can, once the story starts it never really stops or slows down. That being said, if the DnD aesthetic is an absolute turnoff for you, it never really goes away, fair warning.

the first scenes were to give you a grasp of the gap in power lvls in this show.,also everything is purposeful. they did a good job laying out the basics of what the world revolves around and still leaving a cliffhanger at an appropriate moment. ppl really need to give this show atleast eps 2 & 3 where the actual story starts
I think that Solo Leveling would have had a more successful 1st episode if it had been an hour special. Since I know what happens in the story, I had chills the entire episode. But if you're an Anime-only, it might have felt a bit slow or lacking. But I do believe that the cliff hanger did a good job in catching people's attention.

If you read the light novel, it makes perfect sense. But everything will be cleared up as the anime continues. Even the beginning and the dungeon everyone dies in has a meaning behind it, the show just needs to get there. The first episode adaptation in my opinion is perfect 👌🏿
As an anime only, felt like a big middle finger to me, the viewer you're trying to convince to watch your show.
As manhwa reader, im very happy for this adaptation and i think that beginning was better in this adaptation than its was in manhwa for more context for this world.
I'd would be more hyped if studio Ufotable was doing this adaptation bcs Solo Leveling doesnt have that interesting story and characters, but what does have is very HYPE moments and insanely good art.

This is exactly how I feel. I thought the re-shuffling of the intro was to the story's betterment, however they should have mentioned that MC needs enough money for his mother's medical bills which he can only make through hunter work. Additionally, I think the first episode should have been a full hour. The show's hook would have really sunk if the first episode covered everything up to the hospital. Choosing to end before the infamous smile was baffling as well. Having said that, this mfer gonna bang harder than an AWP. lol

They finished partway through chapter 4, and it happens it chapter 6 after a particular point. I actually think it’s a good thing they didn’t end on it now
I liked solo leveling because it had a good power fantasy feeling in the beginning and an interesting world building with potential. That gradually fizzled out with nothing interesting to take its place however (ooh, bigger badder guys that only our protagonist can face, who's world n.1 in power scaling at this point and has been for a while? yawn). This is one of the rare moments where disregarding the later parts of the source material can make a better series overall, i hope they take the chance.

I knew nothing about solo leveling, I never watched a “dungeon” anime, and I loved the first ep. and am so excited for future ones.

Solo Leveling is very great because of the art and the power system. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think SL is the grandfather of the "hunter" genre. But people should keep their expectations low because a major factor in how SL became so praised is the art. The story isn't that complex (A story doesn't necessarily have to be too complex to be good, though.) but the art really amplified the story. It is really enjoyable regardless though.
As a reader of the manhwa: the only thing I'm disappointed in about this episode is the fact that it's not an hour long. They should have ended it off on the aftermath. This much isn't enough to get the anime-onlies hooked on.
The character designs and the voices sound pretty good. They look and sound like how I mostly imagined them. I really enjoyed most of the cast in the manhwa, not just Sung Jin Woo (The main character). The use of music in the statue scene could have been a bit better, but I'm not complaining.
Also, I'm really glad that they are adapting the novel instead of the manhwa. There is going to be a lot of positive changes compared to the manhwa. Overall, I'm hyped for this adaptation, but I'll have to try really hard to keep my expectations low.

Yeah, I think this is a well balanced combo of his editing styles.
If the episode had like 5 more minutes, I think it would have left a stronger impression, but like you said it's a safe play from the studio's side. Another thing is that that 2 minute scene at the start will only be relevant at the end of the 2nd cour (I heard it will have ~20 episodes in 2 cours) so they probably could've put it elsewhere in the show...
As someone who has read the manwha, if I didn't already know where the story was going, that first episode likely would not have been enough to hook me. I also don't necessarily feel like that's a manwha-specific issue, and is actually more of an anime issue. This is why I don't bother watching simulcasts of brand new series that I'm unfamiliar with because with most anime, you have to watch at least a couple episodes before you're really able to tell whether or not it'll interest you. If there was anything at all I wish anime would take from Western media, it would be trying to hook the viewer into actually giving a shit within the first episode. Whether that means releasing two episodes at once, like Frieren did, or whether that's making the first episode longer, I don't know. But I wish they would do that.
Loving the new video format, this one is defintiely gonna thrive for future projects!

As a manhwa reader, I think what you should be expecting out of Solo Leveling is mostly that pure entertainment value. Yea, the story is just alright and there's not a lot of character depth or anything, but by god is everything else awesome. The action, mystery, world building, adventure, and (mostly) the comedic character interactions are all superb! I'm normally not one to get all that invested in pure hype stories, but this author honestly just has a talent for getting you invested.
(To be fair the story does have a few emotional scenes, cool plot twists, etc but they definitely don't define it)
That being said though, I do agree with you that the first episode wasn't a very good hook, as it doesn't really even cover the actual "hook" of the story
For the story, even the manhwa reader can't say much as the story's based on korean light novel, wich is known to be more detailed for character developpement, and world building (they say, so more details that we're unaware of), howevern i felt like the episode should be longer, to show what happen at least at the the end of the dungeon, it covered about 4 (3.5) chapters, however with the added scene,they weren't able to finish the prologue in ep 1, but i'm rather satisfied if they take the time to build the world, it might be a new experience even for webtoon reader
Its odd in the sense that the character introductions were added in almost specifically for people who already read the manwha and know of these characters/story. For new viewers, it likely comes off as jarring and story interrupting. I get the gripes people have with it for sure. Not much is being left out from the source material tho, mostly just stuff getting added in on top of it.
i fully understand the weird cuts beeing weird, was my main complain with ep 1 aswell, the exposition feels to forced (wich well i get, you've got to set up your world and stuff but it just didn't feel very natural). Also without spoiling stuff, altho a lot of the caracters might be kinda forced in there for now, just about everyone that this episode cuts to will have a bigger role in the story later and yes the portal concept will also be explored (bit more at the end of the story tho)

9:18 its pretty much the first few chapters + an extrapolation of events from future information, that first sequence that felt out of place was one off said extrapolations. Some of the characters introductions that were out of place i feel were odd even as a Manhwa/LN reader because some of these people are supposed to have there appearance and identity hidden until a certain moment happens, so now when those scenes happen i am honestly not sure what anybody is supposed to feel when they see them, in the Manhwa those scenes make you wonder who was this character talking to or what does this person look like, but here they just showed them in broad day light.
I think they were trying to make it feel far apart with them showing the s ranks then back to E rank guy to kind of show the difference and stuff, like “oh here’s an epic cool s rank guy! And here’s the kid who is getting stabbed by the lowest level monster” that’s how I kinda saw it at least
2:55 the reason that he keeps being a hunter is because his mother is sick and needs the medical insurance offered by the association but I dont think they have covered that in the anime

I would say the main reason i liked solo leveling back when i read it was the art, so I'm not really disappointed and am just patiently waiting to see how they adapt it, it's really just a fun series

A lot of what was shown is foreshadowing for much bigger stuff later on, including the “pointless” first two minutes lol.
Imo they needed to release two episodes at once to really capivate the viewer, since the first few chapters are really slow so the episode one would he very slow and uninteresting, just development of world, but once you hit the dungeon is when the plots moves foward and never stops, and that ball drop would be episode 2
Its weird they left the real hook of the show for episode 2 instead of episode 1. If i hadnt read the series then i would be confused by how generic this looks. But because i have knowledge of what comes next, im hyped for the anime. DW wait for episode 2, this series is the peak of the physical power fantasy genre (its not Omniscient Reader level which is the peak of all power fantasy).

If the anime industry wants to adapt manhwa, and for it to not be a failure like tog and god of highschool, they need to 1) not condense everything, and 2) actually choose good manhwa to adapt.
They only ever go for the really popular manhwa, which is naturally weaker in terms of story in comparison to some other manhwa.
Like, a good manhwa that would be amazing if adapted right would be Hellper, its colorful, fun, the world is entertaining, i could go on and on, but u get my point.
Like, a majority of the popular manhwa all revolve around a loser becoming op, getting all the bitches, killing all the cartoonishly evil bad guys, like, it doesnt have to be like that.

Actually, the first 2 minutes were kinda important (not just to show what they could do with animation)... it comes in later but all the characters there (The orange-haired beast guy and the guy with the healing magic... except for the lightning guy idfk who he thinks he is) are important. As a manwha reader, I realize that it would make more sense if you read he manwha first, but I expect that as the story progresses, it will be more clear and a better anime. Also, the main reason why Sung Jinwoo stays being a hunter rather than finding another job is because the hunter assosation provides medical support for the hunters and since his mother is int he hospital, he kinda needs that. Also he's just an ordinary guy with no particular skills... for now at least.
He may say that the mana stones he got are trash, but each one of them is still worth 5x more than the salary of a 9-5 job at mcdonald's 💀
the episode should have been a 40-60 minutes special. if you know the manwha you know that a lot a useless exposition was added to the episode, and the dramatical impact of the first chapter was lost by cutting it before it's peak.
in my opinion, Solo Leveling is pretty alright, but nothing special. it's just a great sign for people wishing for more manwha adaptations.
i loved the first episode but at the same time they 100% didn't need to show "the island arc" and could've extended the double dungeon scenes a little further to ended off with the "God" Statue smiling. which woudlve been the perfect ending in my opinion

If you wanna know where they stopped in the manhwa on the anime on ep 1. They stopped around 3 chapters. They surely are thanking there time with this and are maybe will be covering 3-5 chapters every episode.

This adaptation reshuffled a lot of information so there’s more exposition in the beginning. It was probably done because the anime has to condense like 200 chapters into something shorter but still coherent. Not sure why they used Jeju Island for the exposition dump. That was a bit weird, because it only really becomes a thing like 90 chapters later.
Overall though the animation is gorgeous and I can’t wait to see some of the later stuff animated 🥰
they are adapting from the light novel. jeju island was originally introduced first, but the manhwa was the one that changed that.

The first two minutes aren't in the Manwa, the events are only hinted at later. I feel like the people who made the anime didn't have confidence in the first issue, so they smooshed it in here.
The thing I hate about the episode was that they were doing to much telling over showing. It's like they were trying as hard as they could to sell you by episode 1, but it was in a really inorganic and incohesive way imo.
They kinda went over why jinwoo must be a hunter to put it simply government benefits are way better than anything he could do not being a hunter
They left the episode right before the interesting part, which really confused me.
I too hate the d&d estectic goblin slayer does it well but anything with a video game menu feels especially unnatural unlike casting spells, something that feels like its made for a humans to understand like it just feels weird.

9:14 I reread the manhwa and they fitted the first 3 chapters and some parts of 4 into ep 1. From my predictions, I think ep 2 would be chapter 4-10 or 12.
For a first episode my wife and I liked it. Haven’t read the manhwa, and I don’t like isekai stories. (I know this isn’t an isekai but it’s similar) it was good enough for us to want to check out more episodes also winter 2024 is not a stacked anime season. I don’t have any more JJk to watch so I’ll watch it unless it totally loses me.

this can be viewed as a reverse isekai where the isekai pop up in our world.
Im not sure what’s surprising but regression/isekai/real life dungeon has always been interconnected and viewed as adjacent genre.

The first 2 minutes are actually anime original, as well as some dialogue in between the episode.

The reason why they are showing unrelated things to the main character is to try and build the world before showing the story, those are all characters and events that will be important later on. The first 2 minutes that happen in the past are important for what happens in the future, since they talk a lot about that incident and more things related to it happen.
But in the original, we learn all the stuff with Jinwoo, it works better like that, no?

I tried reading the manhwa but never thought it was that good besides the art was dope, but that's all maybe the anime will change how I view it.
It's not at the same level as jjk or Tokyo ghoul but it's enjoyable for sure
I did not feel like to reading it when a lot of people were praising the manwha and their review did not really interest. When I eventually read it a year or two ago I hated the first dungeon area. It's quality skyrocketed after that, and continued at that level until the ending.

Based on the summery of the anime, I don’t think it really finished the initial series set up with the first episode
Another reason to call a 1 episode premiere a major L then. Either Episode 1 should have got us through the initial set up or they should have premiered with more than 1 episode to get us to that point. Now I won't hold this on the animation studio as they don't make those calls, that's on whoever the production company of the SL anime is.
Well the problem with ep 1 is that it looks like it was made to satisfy the fans they already have, and ep 2 is where they wanted to lure new fans in.

sung jin woo situation is similar to people who work in army or as a police or even mercenary. its dangerous but it pays more than the amount of him getting regular job. they encounter many near deaths but it pays to support their needs and they will still continue to do it. that simple. ita happening in real world.
people have to understand that usually the first episode in every show has a job of hooking you in. it doesn't matter if the show was slow, not true to the core material if *nobody watches it.*

Whie i'm a bit biased about SL , what i can say is that all the weird insert are about establishing the world and its characters , & i might venture to say that all the characters and there progression are whats good about SL . And to answer your question they showed half of the 1st chapter of the manwha , & my guess they will stop at the ant from the start .

The first two minutes with the ants isn't in the manhwa. They just kinda introduce the S-class characters in episode 1 of the anime adaptation for some reason. In the manhwa they show up way later in the story where they're actually relevant.
It’s following the Light Novel’s story not the Manhwa’s. They are both really similar the Light Novel just has more character development. They are using the visuals from the Light Novel though, it’s the best of both worlds really.

As a fellow anime only I will give my take on episode 1. Set up of the series through this premiere was well executed UNTIL the episode ended. There are good cliffhangers in writing and bad one's, this was an outright middle finger to the viewer at the end of the episode. I have only ever been that ANGRY at an episode ending one other time in all my years of watching anime and that was the FINALE of HxH when Togashi (through Ging) basically flips you off, tells you that you've seen maybe 1% of the total world and then fucks off never to be seen again. So for me the premiere was an L because either episode 1 should have covered more ground or it should have been a minimum of a 2 episode premiere.
