My DJI Mini 2 crashed to the water - will it work?

- I love this drone's size-to-weight ratio and its overall quality. During my recent flight, I was less cautious and as I was maneuvering to the left, the drone accidentally caught a branch, causing it to fall from a height of 18 meters. I located the drone about 5-6 minutes after the fall and then left it in a container of rice for five days.

That's just amazing. The Mini 2 is a very hardy beast. I've crashed mine 4 times already and it survived every time.
I guess it doesn’t weigh enough to damage itself as easily during falls.
Exactly :)
mine too fell off from 20 metres on hard concrete , guess what it survived after a replacement a new shell and fix his arm
yes, I've crashed mine from a tree limb similar to this video but fell to the ground instead of water. I was able to self-repair the broken arm and had it back up and running without any problems.
@@meonair 20 meters on concrete?😲😲jeeeez, do you have photos of drone after crash?
My mini 2 spent 4 months in a tree about 30-35 feet up. August to mid November in Oklahoma. Finally found it. Brought it in side and let it set for a week or so. Works fine to this day. Went through rain and ice etc.
that's 1 tought Drone
My friend has a Chevy Bolt , sat outside for a week in winter when he went south for vacation , it never work right again ! Dji as well as all things from Apple , all the best stuff are all coming from CHINA !!!!!!
Incredible
Awesome,,,simply awesome
Good job! Also good job of documenting the repairs! My Mini 2 spent about an hour underwater when it went down in a lake. After it was rescued by a small boat, I took out the battery and used canned air to blow all the water out. Then I stood it on its side in front of a fan for a couple of hours. No repairs were needed, and it worked just fine after that. These are tough little guys!
Hi Gary, that's great! One hour? I think battery was already discharged right? Or LED still flashed? These drones have very good build quality (gimbal especially) that water didn't damage it 👍🏻 Thank you for your comment.
@@VolvoCamperLife Yes, battery was discharged. The low battery signal was already beeping when it went down. Actually, I had the floats installed and I was practicing landing on the water and taking off. It was in the air when the low battery signal started, and I stupidly thought I'd make one more lake landing before bringing it in. But when I tried to take off ahain, the surface tention, and the weight of the floats was causing it to have trouble taking off, and it just flipped over and sunk when the floats came off. It was about 150' out, and I was just about to swim out and look for it when I saw a small boat out on the lake. I was able to flag them down, and they came over and I asked them if they could go over to where the floats were and see if they could see my drone. When they scooped up one of the floats, my drone was still attached to it. BTW, if you ever decide to use those floats, I'd advise using zip ties to make sure they don't fall off if your drone should flip over on the water.
@@gama45 Interesting story. Never heard that one before. Thanks for sharing.
mine died after 5 minutes in the ocean, video on my channel of me diving to get it haha
Would you say rice or hot air is the better option?
Friend of mine dumped his into the water and the camera was continuing to take photos of the underwater world. He snagged it out of there pretty quickly but not immediately. Had a few scars from the fall and rocks but he let it dry out I think without doing anything but letting it dry on its own - and it worked and still does. Pretty hardy those things. Amazingly lucky you are.
More durable than it looks :) It's great how many stories about water surviving I can read about here :)
Once mine hit the water it contoured to record for 58secs! 1.5m down
Just letting it dry is the best option. Rice does not really do anything besides risking it getting in the device and leaving starch behind.
Accidentally landed my mini 2 in a puddle of water (not totally submerged). The drone immediately shut off. I retrieved the drone in less that a minute. However it took me a bout 5 minutes before I removed the battery. I shook out as much water as I could and was able to make it home 2-3 hours later. I put it and the battery in some rice (covered) I’m going to check back in a day or two to see if it still works! Really hoping for the best, will give an update then🤞🏾
Update: it works perfectly!
Very sick bro
@@KvleofficialGaming yay!
I had the same issue with my mini 2, didn’t use rice, shook most of the water out and put it under a blowing fan for a few hours as well as the battery. Worked fine after that. I would not take the risk to have some rice stuck in a place in can’t reach!
Woot
👍🏼 Everyone loves a happy ending! Nice work, great video! 😎✌🏼
Thank you 🙂 Exactly, I definitely wasn't expecting that will work everything. I went to summarise spare parts costs and in fact it cost one pack rise and a bit of glue 😃 - thumbs up for DJI 👍🏻
It's good to know that there is hope if it crashes at some point (fingers crossed) ... Thanks for sharing the experience
Fantastic rescue job, well done! Too many folks these days wouldnt bother and just buy a new one, so good on you! 😀👍
Thank you David, it is my first drone and I'm very happy that he survived it. 0€ repair cost for now but I will order some parts sometimes and I will replace it as it should be :)
I' Ve crashed my mini2 into a sweet water lake and it took me about 15/20 minutes before I could recover my drone. it was not only water damaged but also covered with mud, I ve cleaned it with a paper towel and filled every inch with rice, and left it dry for about 6 days. my drone started right after but unfortunately, I had imu and CPU errors. so I took my drone to a specialist, not DJI, he cleaned the imu and CPU, and since then no more issues and have been flying with since without any error. MINI 2 is 100% a BEAST.
Incredible. I would think it would have shorted out or something. Glad it's able to be enjoyed once again. Thanks for posting this vid.
Me too, I didn't expect it will work :) Thanks
Time savers if this happens to you (performs steps as quickly as possible)....
1. Remove battery and sd cards (most important step).
2. If it lands in salt water or mud (like here), rinse all items thoroughly under tap water.
3. Forget the rice. In a room temperature room, put a strong fan on items for at least 24-48 hours, changing item positions every 12 hours.
4. Assemble items and pray for functionality.
Exactly that! And keep the battery outside of the house for a while. If water touches the lithium somehow, it will burst into flames.
@@basvandersluis5662 assuming the battery has been punctured. Lithium Batterys are airtight
@@thunderbolt997 Sure, but water can corrode the contacts and break the air/water seal.
Even with 48 hrs drying with fan you will not be able to get all water out. It will remain inside of camera and all non tightly closed inside volumes. So you point 3 is much in doubt. Rice is a good absorbent and good decision if you are in a wild nature. In case you are at home, best way will be to put the copter in a clear spirit (stronger is better but vodka can also fit), just remember - NO SUGAR. Spirit will take all the free water in it. After 15 minutes in spirit put copter in absorber or dry on the air. Drying will take a couple of hrs only. Even with all that main point remain your nr4 - pray :) The author of video was just very lucky...
WAOH!! So happy that you were able to rescue it!! I love every seconds of this video.
This is tough to watch. Glad it ended up well for you. Love my Mini 2 and I know how tempting it is to dive into a danger at times, especially when you're after some great footage for a cinematic video.
Your dog looks like Milo from Mask movie, btw. So cute! :)
Thank you for your comment. Yes, sometimes need to be little bit risky but this time it was with happy end :) I hope he will flight else long time :)
Thanks, I will greet him from you ;)
His dog was also pretty chill when the drone started up inside the house. I was at a friend's house with my drone and a poodle dog, when I started the drone on their back patio by the pool their dog started going nuts barking even after I had it more than 20-25 ft in the air.
Our Mini 2 crashed into some trees along the shore filming a boat - unbelievable that the camera stayed on which helped us pinpoint the location and find it! No damage, little dirty but works fine!
Great, congrats to you too :)
Same thing happened to me apart it didn't fall in to water it was lost for 3 days I was doing a search and rescue from the air trying to find it with my magic 3 and the zoom and it was just when I was about to give up and fly out of the forest something caught my eye zoomed in and there it was 80ft up in a tree so on the 4th day I came back with a catapult and fishing wire and after a few shots I managed to get it down it was soaking from the rain and what didn't help it was upside down in the tree catching all the rain but just like yours the back leg was hanging out and after watching a UA-cam video I managed to fix it and after drying out and a good clean this little drone sees another day what a brilliant durable little piece of art lol thanks for sharing 😁👍👌🇬🇧
Wow, great story :) There are already several stories of drowned drones but 4 days on the tree is also great 😀 I'm happy that works again. Happy flying and have a nice day. 👋🏻 🇸🇰
My mini SE ended up in a tree about 30m up. It was there for a week before I could get a professional tree climber to retrieve it! It went through several heavy rain storms during that week. Fortunately, the drone was sitting upright on the tree branch. No repairs were needed, and the drone was dry on retrieval. Everything works, including the battery. The drone has been flown multiple times since, without issue. More than impressed by the quality of this drone!
you worked hard on this video, thank you for the insight into mini 2 recovery, much appreciated. love you dog btw.
Thank you Richard.. I will greet him from you 😉 He really love these our camping trips and we both can't wait for next - when we found some free time for it 😊 Have a nice day.
The rice trick is useless, it is an urban legend. You can just let it dry in a well vented place, with a fan. No need to have rice dust everywhere sticking. But very nice video. I liked it ;)
Yea I always feel bad when I see it, honestly I don’t quite see how it would make sense if it worked
@@CarsonHaleSchuddeboom rice absorbs some of the water, it defo isnt an urban legend lol
@@ImpGaming Air absorb water. No rice needed at all. Keep the rice to eat with eggroll's ;)
Great job in putting it together. It truly sucks to crash a drone no matter what? This video was satisfying as watching you patiently fix it and seeing the end result. Thanks for sharing, and clear skies my friend. 👍👍👍
WOW! Best comeback video, I've seen in a long time!! That first grin said, everything's gonna be alright. Fantastic job!!
Wow! You brought it back to life!
Enhorabuena campeón!! 👌👌👍👍
now... THIS is useful! thank you for documenting it. And I'm happy to see it worked again.
Watching that happy face when it turned on and when the props started was satisfying!
Great video beautiful landscape!
Thank you Javier 🙂
its amazing how tough those minis can be.
The drone being buried in rice showing flashbacks like someone in coma and hopefully healing, is a neat idea of storytelling. This was the first video I watched from you, loved the editing. Congrats on your repair!
Beautiful footage! Glad your Mini worked again.
I never realised the DJI drones evolved from mud crabs. They even come apart and go in the cooking pot the same.
No way you just fixed it, like bruh...
You are a flipping legend!
Very well done.I'm glad you got it to survive!! nice repair and glueing.. hope it holds up 😃
Awesome, great that it worked 👏🏻 Video well presented ✌🏻
Great video and good job on the repair, i just flew mine into a tree and smashed the gimbal but these little guys are tough, happy flying : )
Always use sun shield, it is very helpful part. ND filters and sun shield are 2 most important accessories
this drone is really cute I'm happy to see you can make it work again
Yes it is, thank you :)
This video made my day! Happy new year!
Thank you, Happy new year to you too :)
*That smile on your face when it booted up after you pit in the battery .*
:) I didn't expect it to work
the amazing part is that your dog doesn't try to kill it immediately. my pit bull and the drone are not friends. thank you for your video, good to know how robust these little drones are.
Even if it's that small, it's a powerful beast and it's worth all the money
Absolutely. The more I fly this thing, the more I love it.
Great..! I loved the smile on your face the moment the motors spun.
Well done! Glad to see that your mini2 is still on air ;)
That's good to know that dunking it won't necessarily destroy it. Unless, perhaps, if it's salt water and then there could be corrosive damage unless you recover it right away. In that case, I would recommend soaking it in fresh water right away and changing the fresh water several times and swishing it around to make sure it penetrates everywhere to dissolve the salt. Then use the rice. It amazes me that even though the rice doesn't penetrate internal compartments, it still dries it out completely. Nice save!
Always remove the battery instantly. Salt water definitely will cause corrosive damage much faster on the electronics, but if you pick it up from the water quickly, remove the battery, rinse it in distilled water (to remove all the salt), be patient drying it completely (days), you can still recover it. Worst is to leave the battery in the drone.
Yes, it survived 🙂 Luckily it was fresh water in local river. Salt water would be worse. And yes, I removed the battery right after pulling out from the water (battery was inside only a few seconds longer because I shot the video) 🙂
I got my gopro like cam in saltwater and i tried to start it after few weeks i just gave up, after few month i was like its dead let me try and turned on lol
haha, well done, brought me a smile :)
Nice one mate glad you fix it mate great info don 🤠🇬🇧👍👍👍👍
Thank you :)
Thanks for the video. I'm new to drones, but not to electronics. Learned the trick with rice many long years ago, but I do appreciate being reminded. I'm also a little less nervous about crashing my drone as long as it is where I can retrieve it.
Be careful with the rice (check the comments here), definitely better is a silica gel :) In my case it survived also in the rice - my luck :)
Awesome! 💪🏻👊🏻👍🏼
Thanks 🙃
Wow! You gave it a 2nd life🤔😍
The smile at 7:02 was super, like a kid in a candy store 😎, I smiled too when I heard that drone turning on sound. The personal attachment to drones is on another level.
Good job I’m glad you have it working👌
Good job!
Love my Mini 2 and that’s from once owning a Mavic 2 Zoom. No regrets.
sensational, the same thing happened to me with SPARK, I put it on rice too and it worked perfect again, congratulations for the video, friend
Pěkná práce! Super že to přežil. Tenhle dron jsem si také koupil a už jsem byl pár krát nervózní jen z toho, že ztratil signál, nebo že mi na něj útočili ptáci (konkrétně vlaštovky) 😅

Nice work! Good that it survived. I bought this drone too and I was nervous sometimes just because it lost signal, or just because some birds were attacking it...
Ďakujem, ten dron prežije skutočne veľa. Už som ho predal jednému známemu, ten s ním havaroval, rozobral ho do poslednej súčiastky, niečo polepil a zložil naspäť. Funguje ďalej 🙃
Que bom que recuperou
Great video and so glad you got it working again. The same thing happened with my Mini 2, it hit a tree and fell 5ft deep into a Lake, a friend was swimming nearby at the time and rescued it for me but it was immersed for 2 mins (recording onto the SD Card all the time..! 😯) I was an hour from home so I put in on my Car Dashboard blowing hot air. When I got home I put it in the Airing cupboard for a week to dry out. I used another battery to see if it worked, it started up but wouldn't connect to the controller so unfortunately it was a lost cause. 😥 Did your wet battery survive?
Hi Mike, I'm sorry that your Mini2 didn't surived it. I putted it into the rice about 1 hour after crash too. Yes, also drowned battery work fine.
I think what went wrong is you did hot air
No čumím! Opravdu jsem to nečekal.
The doggo made a special participation ❤
Great job!! I will do my best not to go through the same. I got my Mini 2 for a week and I will train as hard as I can to become a great pilot.
So tough that given enough time it would have grown a new arm.
🤣
I did the same with my drone but when my wife came in and made a curry she unwittingly boiled it in the rice for 35 minutes. It didn’t work so well after that and we also had to have the curry without the rice.
Best comment I have read so far. I was extremely moved.
Great man, you amused me :D .. and what? The rice was not cooked well? :D
Awesome. I can't believe it still works! I just got mine this past Christmas. Love it.
I had a similar accident and watching your video I risked repairing it at home. In my case the base of the gimbal broke. all went well. thank you!
I dropped my Mini 2 in the water. It was immersed for only about 15 seconds. The battery did not survive. I assume it shorts, but with a different battery it flies. Only had to pay for a new battery.
Hi Dave, still much better than pay for a new drone 🙃 Great that he survived 😉
Great video. Very interesting. I went from Holy Stone to DJI Mini 2 and that is my main worry - the arm breaking. I can see it was a valid concern. Otherwise, the drone flies very well. If money is no object, I would say keep this one in your tool box. If funds are available, perhaps bump up to the Air 2 or Air 2S. The latter has more sensors, automated modes and camera customization. Cheers.
Same here. First HolyStone 720, second drone DJI mini 2 and the difference is incredible.
@@qrdnk I wish Holy Stone would step up their game cos they look cool.
@@Applecompuser True plus the follow me mode that the mini2 is missing unfortunately.
@@qrdnk That's a good point. It would be nice to have. I think when I have the resources, I will get at DJI Air 2s. I think this will do while I learn and candidly have fun.
Yep Air 2 or Air 2S they have a sensors, follow me mode, bigger sensor BUT they are much bigger and heavier. I like the Mini 2 for his compact size. And ratio of size/price/quality is great. My next drone will be probably Mini 3 :)
I did not want to check the comments before watching the video, result? This made me sooooo happy. Beautiful video with a happy ending.
Crashed my drone into the paddy fields. The drone got completely submerged into slush water for about a minute. This video gave me confidence that it could be recovered. Thanks a lot. Now the drone is working again. I dried my drone under sun for 3hr instead of using rice

Welcome here, thank you for your comment ♥️ Next videos comming soon, I actually searching some free time for next trips and also complete drone disassembly and cleaning 😉 Thanks and have a nice day!
Good save buddy. I hear the bottom camera algorithm gets confused over still water. Very glad it made it
Always tricky flying in amongst trees with no obstacle avoidance, but a well put together video.
Great to see that it works, great job
I wasn't expecting that! Amazing and reassuring..
Nice I wanna bring my videos to this level. Very well done! got my like!

Muito obrigado, também estou feliz por ele ter sobrevivido :)
Sorry to read that! Hope it works :)
Glad to see it finally didn't die!
Yes, he survived :)
I also crashed my mini 1 into water last summer. I actually took it completely apart and put the motherboard in rice for 2-3 days. Worked flawlessly after that too! They are suprisingly tough.
Thanks for this video. I crashed mine one and it has a crack in the hull but still flies perfectly. This gives me a little more confidence
Good Job and nice Video !
Cool video good information
Good job man!
Wow Great Brand. Thanks now i have confidence with my DJI Mini 2.
wow. great video. 😀
Very creative video!
Great!!
when he started flying it again, the 2 things that got me happy was the drone flying again and the dog
Mistake 1: You crashed, but this does happen.
Mistake 2: You didn't use DJI Refresh.
Mistake 3: You didn't remove the battery.
Mistake 4: You didn't rinse the drone (Ideally in fresh water, then in isopropyl).
You used Rice, it kind of works but it's not recommended, silica may have been a better idea.
It's also worth mentioning that with all that extra dirt and your repair the drone may very well be over 250g at take-off.
This little drone escaped perfectly! At first I thought drone food would be rice 🤣The video is very nice and congratulations on having managed to put the little drone in order I hope it will serve its owner for a long time to come! Have a successful weekend! Have a nice day!

The Mini 1 or 2 have less parts inside to get wet. I have never gotten mine wet but have lost in a tree. Thought it was gone but got it back and fixed the leg its working good. The smile on your face is the same as anyone who has crashed there drone and start it again to see it is working.
Hi, and how long was on that tree? Great that work again 👍🏻 Yep, it was really surprising for me 🙂 I hoped that some parts may be works but no everything 🙃
