Unless a person chooses to live completely on their own on a land that doesn't belong to any nation, pay no taxes and without any citizenship, there is no such thing as absolute freedom. A person's freedom is always limited to what the laws allow in said person's jurisdiction.
Using "absolute" in connection with freedom is not fair point. Because of course its scary. However very little societies did really had serious problem with _too much freedom._ If there is problem with basic freedoms it rather indicates the society is fragile in some aspect and had to suppress it. But this is very far from "absolute" freedom.
Agree. Your keen observation and logical arguments are plausible because, as you mentioned, people should get out of the bubble to see what had happened in the world. There is much more out there than U.S.A. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. ✌
your mom is absolutely correct. what is freedom ? it all depends on the individual's perception of freedom. a couple years ago, a Hong Konger in UK said he would rather be a beggar in UK than be an emperor in China. For 99.9%of the people in this world, I believe they would rather be an emperor than a beggar. who doesn't want a comfortable living standard and not to worry about the basic needs of food and shelter?? the right to vote is meaningless if a person can't even provide comfortable food and shelter to the family. we have too many politicians and not enough statesmen. that's my perception of freedom. observation from canada.
If US is Democratic like what we said, pls hold referendum every 4-5 years in every states and Freedom like u said, let people loot over $ 1000 in every stores
I have watched a lot of walking in China videos and USA ,my observation is China has passed up USA ,safer to walk in big cities, lots of high speed trains, lots of cities that are amazing, lots of factories, even the poor in China have a roof over their head, with a kitchen, clean streets, less crime, way less crime.
This video was very interesting to me as a German who grew up with the USA is free - China is suppressed narrative. To hear a different perspective is very much appreciated. Thanks for opening my horizon a bit. 😀
I believe only when you go to the place to experience yourself and ask the people of that place then you are eligible to comment on what happens. I think Trip has both because he lived in both China and USA. Therefore, what he said should be considered objective.
Freedom & senseless freedom are two different things. Freedom comes with responsibilities. Like China , S'pore is also often criticised by the arrogant west , politicians & journalists alike , esp from the US & UK to be authoritarian , dictatorial & undemocratic , yes , by their holy standards. In other words we are criticised for not conforming to their holy image. The west needs to learn good courtesy & mutual respect. Freedom means different things to different people. When people in the west have made up their minds that their values & systems are better than others , they truly have a problem. US has the freedom to own guns to look kool , so be it , more deaths will follow. But those in the US who oppose firearms do not enjoy the freedom to stay safe & alive. People in US or UK often brag they can f**k & make fun of their presidents , well , so be it , we don't do it here. If the government does not perform , then they are out in the next election , it's that simple. What matters to me is to live in a safe environment , a progressive society without moronic clowns running the country. Just look at UK & US today , 2024. 🇸🇬
Why would anyone care what the West including the US or UK say? All of them either are or bordering irrelevancy. I live in the US and this country is falling apart! In another decade the entire country will look like a shantytowns from Rio if they don't close all their military bases in a year or two. I've heard in the next few years it's going to take 100% gov. tax revenue just to pay the interest on our county's debt!
Great video and agree in China 100%. My wife has family throughout Hubei province and we enjoy taking regular trips there. We plan to live there part time when I retire in a few years. Americans screaming about their “rights” I find very amusing
@호롱방 Go back. Why waste your time living in a terrible place like the US when you have lovely china. Go back and take your family and friends with you.
The way Americans think about freedom is very childish and performative. Americans like the aesthetics of freedom and democracy but not the actual practice of it. Which is the Americanism has to be indoctrinated at a young age.
I lived in China for 5 years, I came back in 2017. For me I found that reverse culture shock was more of an issue than landing in China was. How have you found that. I agree with you, a lot of people from the United States were telling me how terrible China is on personal rights. Of course there are issues, but when you think about the personal right to have a gun and then to use said gun in the ways that it has been abused it does make you wonder is this country doing as much to take care of personal rights? I found that what people forget is that there is no perfect government on earth. That each government has it's good points and it's bad points. But people are basically the same. We all want good jobs to take care of our families, we want a good place to live etc. Often I feel that news telling us someplace else is dangerous and doesn't hold our same values does more to keep us separate than allow us to see how similar we all really are. People should use their own judgement and not rely totally on what they hear on the news. Everyone has an agenda.
- We don't have gun problems. - Do you have freedom of speech? - We don't have racial problems. -Do you have freedom of speech? - We don't have problems walking around at night. -Do you have freedom of speech? This goes on and on every time I mention what it is like to live in China.
Country that people are obsesswd with freedom are those that are not free. For countries that are truely free, it is simply a natural part of life that people don't pay attention to it.
If you do not pay attention to it there is risk it will be taken away. There has to be a balance and neither China nor USA are well balanced so the examples in the video seems reasonable. However if you include Europe, now it really changes the perspective.
John, I have moved to Texas in 1991, 33 years in US and in law enforcement over 27 years. Truly a lot of freedoms, freedom to own guns, freedom to be a homeless, freedom curse at any politician. I like it and I am not comfortable to live in China. Gun violence and crimes are part of American's lifestyle. Income tax is 25% of my income. The property tax annually is a lot of money to pay if you own some properties. I paid close to 8k for medical insurance, each time doctor visit is $35, specialist $65. It is impossible to have same day doctor visit, must book weeks ahead.
We have a bad notion of freedom as lack of interference. But as you point out, that can mean a spazzing toddler is 'free.' A better concept is that freedom is when you can make determinations between ultimate values (requiring a lot of moral education) and enact your choices aiming to achieve whatever value you decide is best (requiring a lot of technical education). Being at liberty to make yourself or others unhappy can run contrary to freedom in this deeper sense. What's crazy is this understanding is fully within the western philosophical tradition, but it seems we need to look at China to see how it can really work and to challenge ourselves. Thank you for this great video!
Lets suppose you are right. So you want a freedom in expense of platform owner freedom. You can rant about media being too big they can seem as a public space. However until there is really a law making them a public space, this principle is still valid. And I bet you do not want force your freedom at expense of others freedom.
Culture defines everything. Speech defines the world we live in. In American corporations, there is a public relations department through speech. The US president has a speechwriter, which shows how vital speech is. Freedom of speech creates chaos in a society.
Such absolutisn approach makes word freedom useless. And its better for a word to mean something, ideally the threshold to split some significant portions of the spectrum. Its effectivity of language used. So you need to harmonize language to reality, not other way around
Very intriguing and thoughtful points on freedom! for ordinary people, there is not much difference in terms of freedom between the two countries. However, if you are into the political issues, US is definitely more free than China. I don't know whether UA-cam is banned in other communist countries such as Vietnam. I agree with him that China should relax more on media and public speech.
Thank you for telling it like it is. Some members of my family immigrated to the States, 50 years ago. They bought a house in Oakland. They are afraid to go out. Especially my elderly aunt. That bubble theory really applies. It's like these Karen videos we watch on YT. They are stuck inside their bubbles and they are immersed in their negative thinking, resulting in their atrocious behaviour. When people just go out more, see outside their glass walls, the world can be so much freer.
When people repeated shout 'freedom of speech', it only means they don't actually have it. In society where people don't feel overconcerned about their freedom, and start saying other countries lack freedom, that's when they're admitting they don't have it.
What about the health care system? It's a kind of good parameter. In us you have to pay for everything with insurance. In Sweden everything it's free and is payed by everybody with tax and the same is for China.
Freedom describes journalistic freedom and the opportunity to publish articles , essays, and other publications critical of the government . UA-cam bloggers pass themselves off as journalists and critics , but it’s lot more complicated than that.
It still has the most freedom by far. Freedom to die homeless in the streets, freedom to grift, scam, and steal, freedom to be generally a pos, freedom to live off unearned income, it's generally the greatest safe haven and cultivator of humanity's worst traits. Compassion isn't natural but greed is.
You are very lucky to have such a smart Mom. She is absolutely right about the definition of freedom. In fact, political correctness in the US means that you are not free when you live in the US because you must always be mindful of what you express. Otherwise, they will give you all kinds of labels.
Talking politics at all is considered divisive by many people--that doesn't mean we should stop and it certainly doesn't mean we should censor it! We need MORE exposure to different political perspectives if we want to get comfortable around them. The effect of constant censorship is just like you said--people just learn to self-censor themselves and no longer even notice since it's automatic.
In comunist country where I was born and raised was same level freedom of speech like in U.S. In both countries you can freely criticize US goverment. I other cases we had "fredom of speech" a they had "freedom after speech."
The US is a rules based order country along with its vassal states in Europe. EU is also a beautiful garden unlike these unregulated jungles according to Blinken and Borrel.
The way i see it, the more laws a country has - from federal, state/provincial to city ordinance - the less free you are. It's all about how a person exercises his/her rights in the society that makes him/her feel free or not.
Whaw. any country has right to trade with any other country? Even if that country does not want? So you force one freedom on expense of other freedoms you realize it do you?
What you mean by effective governemt? You think their approach to environment? WHere they paint grass to look good from airplane ? Or that their debt in 10 years will be same as USA? Or that in recent 100 years USD did lose like 95% of value while Chinas currency was replaced 8 times so it lost effectively 800% of value?
What a wise woman your mother is but it is so true, no one is free not even from the bible times… Ten Commandments anyone? Those seem like rules to me 😅
I can add some thoughts, I think Western liberals deliberately ignore a country's national freedom, diplomatic autonomy, that is, independence, the best case is the liberal and democratic Taiwan, Taiwan's three political party candidates need to go to Washington, D.C. before the election to get diplomatic support, if Tsai Ing-wen is elected by the Taiwanese, then Tsai Ing-wen listens to the Taiwan people, or listens to the United States? Especially in the controversy over the import of American ractopamine food, the KMT accepted ractopamine beef, while the DPP accepted ractopamine pork, but the Taiwan public opinion is very clear against any ractopamine food, so is the Taiwan president serving the locals Taiwanese? If the president of a country is not free, will the people he rules be free?
Why I need to protest over issues when filing complaint is enough. Like a leftover electric pole blocking the entrance to my apartment block when filing a complaint with my neighbour to the local authority is enough. Only an ineffective local government need protesting to make changes. From vn btw.

It’s interesting that you mentioned 1984, which has been used to describe China by certain media for ages. I’m Chinese and lived in both countries. A few years back an American friend said something that stick with me. He believed that the US government has been deliberately keep their people dumb by cutting education funds. My friend used to be a high school teacher in US and he said students in the 70s and 80s was brilliant at math. When I was studying at college in the US, my classmates could not calculate cubicle volume, which was a huge shock to me. @@xueshang1035 Quite true. I graduated from High School in 1989, but was schooled classically, as my grandparents raised me and believed a good education was absolutely important. My grandfather was a Freemason and raised me to be a free thinker, someone that "believes half of what they see and none of what they hear" (in other words, if I believe anything, it is because I found the proof for myself). The term that your friend was probably trying to describe was (and is) "dumbing people down" and he was absolutely correct. The quality of education in today's America is a pale imitation of what it once was. @@briancossey4773 well said, I completely agree the social media can be a double edged sword. Everybody is falling into certain narratives, without conscious. Imperialists do not want to admit their doings of the past were destructive and inhumane. Freedom and Democracy are tools for Imperialists to maintain their Supremacy. USA and Citizen value Democracy and Freedom more over Humanity. See for your self as the unfolding scenario in West Asia.
There is no freedom of speech and expression in amerikaa
for example, "jews are evil"
Um... YT is NOT the government. If you want to complain about private monopolies having too much power, that's another story (but somehow I'm sure you don't). Nobody wants to hear racist, misogynist or other forms of hate speech anyway.

Yes you are right, there are certain topic you can not say without consequence in US either
This is more true than ever. I remember back in the 90s, at least I can discuss about politics with people that you don't agree with, and its not as a big deal as now. Today, can't talk about anything with people who don't just disagree, but simply because they are ignorant and only get their info from corporate media. Whats worse is, those people will act like they know everything the best, and as soon as you disagree they will either hold grudges or directly call you names. Its so depressing in the US these days.
@@YoungTang Its exactly the opposite. Ppl consuming mostly alternative media thinks they know better than mainstream. But mainstream is just mathematicaly most common view, if we play on dichotomy mainstream - alternative. Now when talking with someone from other side on this field, your problem is you do skip basics and try to convince the other about some fancy details. No, until you can understand each other why they are on the other side, any details are pointless and destructible.
No personal freedom should be absolute; therefore, you can only be truly free when you are not absolutely free.
Unless a person chooses to live completely on their own on a land that doesn't belong to any nation, pay no taxes and without any citizenship, there is no such thing as absolute freedom. A person's freedom is always limited to what the laws allow in said person's jurisdiction.
Absolute "Freedom" is a scary thing. Mere mortals are incapable of handling absolute freedom
First time i saw your video. Absolutely agree everything you said. Great video.
Agree. Your keen observation and logical arguments are plausible because, as you mentioned, people should get out of the bubble to see what had happened in the world. There is much more out there than U.S.A. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. ✌
What a good perspective on freedom. Appreciation.
your mom is absolutely correct.
what is freedom ? it all depends on the individual's perception of freedom.
a couple years ago, a Hong Konger in UK said he would rather be a beggar in UK than be an emperor in China.
Americans have the freedom to choose either a Republican or a Democrat president, either owned by AIPAC anyways.
Truth nothing but the truth
If US is Democratic like what we said, pls hold referendum every 4-5 years in every states
and Freedom like u said, let people loot over $ 1000 in every stores

Love your presentation, very well explained and easy to understand, you have solids points
Thank you for sharing this with the world. There’s so much to learn.

Your mother is very intelligent and raised an very intelligent son 👍👍👍👍
sometimes "your freedom are oppressing me"

I feel admiration for the way your mom taught you to think!
Very interesting and a lot of countries are surpassing the US in different things like education
If you don't feel safe, you don't have any freedom.
Americans said if you are not allowed to own a gun to protect your live ones and yourself. That means there is no freedom in the country.
@@hengongchua6250 in NY gun only can be used by criminal.
The way Americans think about freedom is very childish and performative. Americans like the aesthetics of freedom and democracy but not the actual practice of it. Which is the Americanism has to be indoctrinated at a young age.
its called salability
It is basically superficial...
You're free to do anything you want in USA as long as it doesn't interfere with the rich and the corporations ability to exploit you
look at that sunshine!
you guys are winning life
I lived in China for 5 years, I came back in 2017.
Thank you for the truth and truth should prevail.
When I find nirvana in China, I would keep it a secret no need to argue with others freedom this freedom that, enough said 🤫
Nice ❤ explanation, with reality and truth
It's a futile discussion. Freedom is politicised in your country. A just and well administered justice system guarantees freedom for all.
In the "Land of Freedom and Democracy", if I say "there are only 2 genders", I get censored
😂
Lets suppose you are right. So you want a freedom in expense of platform owner freedom. You can rant about media being too big they can seem as a public space. However until there is really a law making them a public space, this principle is still valid. And I bet you do not want force your freedom at expense of others freedom.
Your mom is a very smart women. She really understand how the world works.
Stick and stones will brake my bones but words will not hurt me? I guess that is not true anymore.
It never was true
Culture defines everything. Speech defines the world we live in. In American corporations, there is a public relations department through speech. The US president has a speechwriter, which shows how vital speech is. Freedom of speech creates chaos in a society.
What is difference between _bustle in society_ and _chaos in society_ ?
Lived in South Asia, Europe and USA. Very astonished at the propagandizing in thr USA compared to elsewhere. 😳
Good analysis and comments.
I think freedom is a combination of subjective and objective cognition.
Very well said. I am not free at my own house.
Such absolutisn approach makes word freedom useless. And its better for a word to mean something, ideally the threshold to split some significant portions of the spectrum. Its effectivity of language used. So you need to harmonize language to reality, not other way around
Very informative analysis!
Very intriguing and thoughtful points on freedom! for ordinary people, there is not much difference in terms of freedom between the two countries. However, if you are into the political issues, US is definitely more free than China. I don't know whether UA-cam is banned in other communist countries such as Vietnam. I agree with him that China should relax more on media and public speech.
seriously usa needs more, alot more wise man like you sir.
Fullyagree
I agree with your mom’s statement….
Open minded, reasonable talk.
What about the health care system? It's a kind of good parameter. In us you have to pay for everything with insurance. In Sweden everything it's free and is payed by everybody with tax and the same is for China.
In Canada it’s free! But you have to wait until you’re dead to see a doctor 😂
There is not freedom to steal. You are making very misleading statement
Strikes me that Americans wouldn't need to repeat "I'm free" over and over again if it was really true.
This video is worth a million views!
Great video! ❤
The way i see it, the more laws a country has - from federal, state/provincial to city ordinance - the less free you are. It's all about how a person exercises his/her rights in the society that makes him/her feel free or not.
Your mom is a very wise person.
Yes no doubt America is the most freedom government who can freely put any bill of sanctions to restrict other country's rights.
Whaw. any country has right to trade with any other country? Even if that country does not want? So you force one freedom on expense of other freedoms you realize it do you?
well said...
Great Show.
China does have less political freedom but is it so important to ordinary people compare with an effective government?
What you mean by effective governemt? You think their approach to environment? WHere they paint grass to look good from airplane ? Or that their debt in 10 years will be same as USA? Or that in recent 100 years USD did lose like 95% of value while Chinas currency was replaced 8 times so it lost effectively 800% of value?
What a wise woman your mother is but it is so true, no one is free not even from the bible times… Ten Commandments anyone? Those seem like rules to me 😅
Your mama is a wise lady.
Freedom should not be done to inconvenience others.

Thank you for giving this logical, objective, insightful and truthful talk on freedom. You deserve a big thumb up!!!👍👍👍
Freedom, and that is all in common all around the world, is rather something which disappears with the forthcoming of civilization of the masses. So if one thinks he is having a lot of freedom, his descendants will no longer have it. This is what history is teaching us. I all goes towards the extremes. Everywhere in the world. This is what we should be aware of. There is a tendency towards the less.
Am working to establish the digital nomad lifestyle. Am ex-military (10 years total; 7 years Navy, 3 years Army) and hoping to someday soon acquire a 36' to 42' sailboat).
Most "free" moment I ever felt was during the first Gulf War, when nothing was going on and I had a brief moment to myself; I looked out of the hangar bay of my aircraft carrier, towards/to the horizon, as the sun was setting and felt such a momentous sense of freedom. Since then, I've been wanting to (and am now being drawn back to) get back to the ocean.
The "Freedom" of and in America is an illusion;
think of the scene in "The Wizard of Oz":
"pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".
At time index 0:29 you show a posting about freedom of thought, and yet EVERYTHING is monitored now (with or without your knowledge, permission or consent). For those who have never actually taken the time to read a book, they might want to pick up the book "1984" by George Orwell and pay attention to The Thought Police.
It just made me wonder, Now with social media and misinformation everywhere, it’s extremely easy to divide people. Anyone can just make up some story and it will be “fact “ online within 12 hours. It’s honestly scary….
As for social media, it really didn't do the people any favors; what social media DID do is make it easier for people to get caught up in "groupthink" and not take responsibility for themselves.
@@briancossey4773 well said, I completely agree the social media can be a double edged sword. Everybody is falling into certain narratives, without conscious. I don’t agree with all the censorship China has been doing, but one must wonder, without any censorship, what this 1.4 billion population country would turn into? Even the most remote corners of Xinjiang and Tibet has access to internet, and it would be insane to assume everyone is rational enough to think twice. So it’s a dilemma. Freedom shouldn’t be limited to the freedom of speech. I honestly believe freedom means one has the capability to choose whoever he/she wants to be, within the law. Rather than say whatever you want whenever you want
Freedom does not involve licentiousness.
