The Blue Comet set is beautiful. When I worked at Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, we had a number of these cars, some duplicates, and three engines. I learned how to repair and maintain Lionel motors by working on these engines. Now I am slowly getting my own set, piece by piece. The only change is I am replacing the incandescent bulbs with LED tape.

There are a lot of people that have the modern scale locomotives and rolling stock that consider Postwar and MPC trains junk. They prefer highly detailed true to prototype units with all the bells and whistles over the old stuff that ironically has at most a bell and a whistle.
As a Postwar/MPC guy myself it's good to see that you've got room for both the super detailed new stuff and the whimsical older stuff on your layout.

What a shame people like that still exist in the hobby.. On the other hand I also had an encounter with postwar people who heavily disliked Modern and considered them a junk also. Wonder when the hobby can unite on which era they model. Guess you can’t please everyone.

I love it all! I get it that some collectors prefer specific items and model specific eras. For me, I find all of it exciting. This is one of the great parts of the hobby: you can enjoy it however you want.

@@RBPTrains That’s fantastic! While I mostly have Modern, I absolutely love the standard gauge and postwar stuff that I own! Hm speaking of, perhaps a Standard gauge video in the future? That is if you can acquire them without selling your kidney hah

What a profound observation; 'MPC - An era to be celebrated unto its own.' As an old postwar purist, you are opening my eyes to this long neglected period of O gauge trains.

My mother and father gave me the MPC Blue Comet set for Christmas in 1978, the diner car was a birthday gift the following year when it came out. I sold my set during my divorce and now I wish I hadn't done it. I could go out and assemble a second set but it is not the one my parents gave me. I really enjoy your video presentations. Awww, the trains of my childhood... although, I thought they had been all boxed for 35+ years... when I unboxed my Chicago and Alton, I found one of the little marker lights bent...hmmm. I inquired to my Father what happened, because I took very good care of my trains. Oh, he had put it around the Christmas tree like 15 years ago (not wanting children to knock off or touch his trains) and my nieces were running it super fast, it flew off the track and flipped over onto the tile floor. Not happy! LOL! But all the rest were safe in their boxes including my blue comment and many more. It is nice to oil them, put them on the track and they run. My Dad gave me a ton of his trains, too many to count, some of which had never seen the light of day outside their box. The MPC era trains all ran after decades in the box... all of the MTH trains that take batteries from the 90s through the 2000, not so much... most wouldn't recharge or even move. There is something to be said of simplicity.

The ATSF 8900 has slipped through my hands 3 different times in the past year, breaking my heart because its my favorite of the era. My great uncle, who had a huge train layout and got me into the hobby had one. His MPC’s were the locomotives that I played with and that’s why I bought the Chicago and Alton. He told me about riding on the SF and SP, he had all these stories that I would listen to like it was the greatest story time. I am going to succeed and get the ATSF 8900 one of these days. I am even more motivated to get it after seeing your video. I hope you had an awesome Father’s Day and see you around the bend ❤️

@@RBPTrains my uncle Vernon was a precious man and I get my humor and orneriness from him. I just remember always being excited for my grandpa to take me to uncle Vernon’s home because he always had a cherry 🍒 Pepsi waiting…a Roy Rogers as he would say and then he’d take me to his garage for me to see his train collection. I always was enamored by the smoke and the mountains that he had built, the train station and country style homes and stores. He had minimal lighting because of the small village that was like a small valley between mountainsides. It was that Santa Fe 8900 that I always chose to run with him, immersing myself into the scene as if I was riding the train through this village. He’s been gone 11 years this September, but he lived to 90 years old and those memories, held close to my heart, feel like yesterday.
As for getting my hands on the SF 8900, I know I will. I was outbid twice when I was unable to watch the auction as closely due to work and I had one where the owner and I had a deal, but I had to wait for payday and he was willing to wait. However, I made it clear that I wanted him to take the best offer if it came between our deal and my ability to pay. Well, someone not only came in to pay more, but over bid not only my offer, but the original offer by $50 which was over $100 above my offer. I believe that everything happens for a reason, the owner may have needed the funds and a different SF 8900 would be mine at a different point in time. I did just get a great deal on a Lionel Santa Fe 4115 that arrives today.
I always enjoy your videos and I am so glad that you are getting the recognition for your hard work on this hobby. I believe that you are helping to grow the hobby and the community. Keep up the great work, Chris ❤️

The MPC engines looked great and some of them ran great as well. You will notice, however, that all the samples like the Blue Comet had plastic gears which didn't hold up too well. I had many MPC engines but I limited my self to the Berkshire and Northern styles because they were made just as rugged as their post-war predecessors with all metal gears and drives.

As I mentioned in a previous video, I love the Blue Comet.
I had an MPC Blue Comet and full set of passenger cars for a number of years. When I moved into HO scale, and it had been sitting around for years, I sold it off. I always regretted that decision. I did manage to find the MTH Proto 3.0 Blue Comet and I am piecing together a set of scale cars - great engine. I will find an MPC Blue Comet one day.

You have such beautiful engines! Wished I could even afford a single one because the conversion rate here is terrible.

If I had the mic blue comet, I would take of the rear four wheel trucks and replace it with the two wheel rear tuck to make it look more accurate
