Superglue, who would have thought it, I have wrestled with elastic bands, cable ties , and black thread--but this is definitely worth a try. thanks for sharing.
In reef tanks, using superglue to hold down corals is super common. Like, all the time. Any time we get asked "Will glue brand X work?" chances are the answer is yes, as long as it's gel. Worst case, you try it and it doesn't work so you reglue it. Also, in saltwater we put the wet glue in the water and it seems like it hardens faster. Thanks for the video!
I think it is risky to tell a customers it'll probably be safe. I've seen customers do all kinds of things with that logic. I personally only recommend products I have personally tested and used.
Fair enough. That definitely makes sense. I forget to think about it in context of customers or even viewers. I have a super lower amount of subs so I've never been blamed for a recommendation like I assume you have. Thanks for the thought.
Great video Cory! Tip for removing rock wool especially for plants that have very fine roots like Crypts and Swords it to swish the root ball in water or hold it under a slowly running faucet. The wool will loosen from even the smallest roots and if you're careful you can remove all of it pretty easily.
Hi, Co Op crew. I can (thankfully) always find my much needed answers on this site! That, along with your EXCELLENT customer service and products, is unsurpassable imo. ☺
Superglued a java fern to my drift wood. Half of it was coming of the wood, so I cut it off and stuck it in a near by rock with no adhesive at all. Worked wonderfully and looks great.
Thank you, Cory! I'm getting a one species only, Blue Dolphins, and from what I've heard they're almost like Oscars, that I've kept before, when it comes to plants. When I kept the Oscars it never crossed my mind that I could have plants, but now you've given me hope. Anubias glued to rocks. Thank you!
Very useful info about the plants and the glueing. Had to giggle and rewatch the 'bloop' comment at 11.44, Just the way you said it made me laugh out loud. Thanks for the help and the giggle,
Cory, I just love all of your informative videos on everything about fish keeping! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us and sharing what has worked for you with all of your experience ❤
Hey cory, been watching your videos for a few months now after setting up a new tank for the first time in 20 years. Thanks to your advice and a few others my tank seems to be doing fine. No fish deaths yet anyways. LOL. As for the topic of attaching plants to rocks. THANKYOU!!!! I was getting so frustrated waking up or even walking away from the tank for a few hours to find my chinese algae eaters (lets not even broach that subject on a saleman that didnt warn me how big they'll get) had uprooted all my plants again. I used krazy glue the original stuff and it worked just fine. I can see the fish are doing fine as well and has made it so much easier to actually aquascape my tank. I'm going to wait and see how these do and then fill it out a little more if need be. Thanks again for the tip.
I believe it was Girl Talks Fish who suggests a light dusting of sand to cover any errant gel that wanders too far from beneath the rhizome. My Co-op order arrived a couple days ago. I'm pumped.
Hey Cory, I see this was three years ago, so maybe not with this particular tank, But any way you can go back in a few months and show us how they filled in? I found this one by watching a vlog on a 40 gal breeder you were setting up with crypt, nana and another one I can't remember the name, lol. It would be awesome to see how they grow out! Thanks!
Been researching plants and stuff for my new 40 gallon breeder when I start it up and this was SUPER helpful for a nice not unsightly way to attach plants
5 years later and this is exactly the video I needed to see! I’m about to start my first live plant aquarium and I wanted to see how to glue my java fern to some decorations. Thanks for making these videos!
This was the best video to watch as a beginner, I now have a beautiful setup with two anubias flowers in my tank, you can see it on my new uploaded video. Thanks a lot cory!!
The same lava rocks you use for filter media are perfect sized to wrap some Anubis around. Ive a bunch where i could perfectly anchor the rhizome on the rocks with the roots digging into the substrate.
Really a great technique! Thanks so much - this really helped us out when setting up our new tank. I’m new to this, and your videos have been amazingly helpful.
Thank you, thankfully I found this video. All my plants were thriving only this plant(java) was going black like you said. I just pulled it out of the gravel, looks like it’s on it’s last thread but ima do my best to revive it. Thank you and now I’m subscribed!
Just an FYI if you look on the back of the package near the bottom on "most" super glue products, name brand or off brand it's all made by a company called "Henkel". Henkel is one of the largest producers and developers of cyanoacrylate and other types of glue. We use Henkel glue for manufacturing where I work. Even the cheap walmart brand says "Henkel Corporation".
Just wanted to pass on that I did this today with Loctite brand super glue gel control, and not only did it work, but it worked under water without needing to remove the hardscaping! I placed several Java ferns around a new tank and one of them didn't want to stay in place. So I pulled it out, did NOT dry it off, and put on a dab of Loctite gel control, plunged it underwater and stuck it right to the hardscape which was submerged the whole time. It stuck fast instantly!
As I wrote earlier, in humidity (humid air), super glue cures faster, not only in SW. Probably it cures faster, not only in SW, but in FW too. So, it really does!
Gorilla glue makes different types of glue. So watch with one you get. He is using cyanoacrylate (super glue). If you like Gorillas look for their "super glue".
I've seen other videos that used Gorilla superglue, so I tried it and it works. But, it comes in a big (for superglue) bottle. The trouble with that is that superglue starts to harden once the bottle is opened. If you don't use up the whole bottle on the first project, by the time you go to use it again, the glue that was in the spout has hardened into a plug, and you have to poke a hole through the plug to use it again. The glue that comes in small tubes is more likely to be used up at once, so less waste. I like the idea of gluing plants to rocks for goldfish and African cichlids, because these guys just love to rearrange the substrate. Lots of South American cichlids are just as bad.
The cap of the glue comes with a little metal needle-thing to poke through. I only used about half a tube on my most recent project, and I was worried about it getting dried shut too. I just tested and found that a person is probably strong enough to unscrew it despite the glue, and the metal poker works just fine for keeping the hole unsealed.
If you use the loctite brand of super glue gel you can add the glue to the plant out of the water and then simply attach it to an existing piece of decor in your tank. This also works with coral frags. The glue is reef safe. I've also noticed this type of glue doesn't stick to your fingers as much.
Great video!! I really love the anubias! I just got one from you a few weeks ago and its awesome! My beta and Cory catfish love it! I'm going to glue mine to the natural slate stone I have in there.. I also have some Java fern tied on a rock with fishing line, but I don't like the way it looks.. I think I'm going to order another round of plants from you soon! Definitely another anubias.. what would you recommend for a 5 gallon.. I like the small grassy stuff you place in the substrate.. I'm not sure what its called lol. I'm so new at aquatic life so I need something easy and low maintenance, also that doesn't get too tall .. I like vertical plants and I could use a few, but they can't get too tall.. I never know what to go with because there are so many great varieties.. I'd love some suggestions if you or any, or if your subscribers have any.. I want the best for my new aquarium friends. Thanks in advance. Have an amazing day! I appreciate all the info in the video.
I use the none gel version currently not had any problems with drip or running or getting my finger stuck i just use a smaller amount of the glue (cyanoacrylate)
Roots. Covering the rhizomes with anything has a good chance of killing it. Less is more. Use just enough that it will stay, but try to not suffocate the roots with superglue
Can’t they just stay in the pot they come in or is the rock wool harmful?..It seems to have grown well in the pot with rock wool ..Thanks for showing us how to .
I ordered java fern / java moss from co-op I didn't realize it was delivered And it sat in my garage for 2 or 3 days. When I opened the package the moss was very brown and the fern leaves were severely molted brown. Is this due to it sitting in the packaging too long?
"You can't fail with these plants." Hold my beer.
I totally get this lmao
Thats exactly.what i just got done telling the lfs. As i was buying 3 more to try 🤣
Superglue, who would have thought it, I have wrestled with elastic bands, cable ties , and black thread--but this is definitely worth a try. thanks for sharing.
Super glue gel is my favorite. But I also like black zip ties.
Thank you Corey nobody explains things as thoroughly as you do
A friendly reminder, Cory, that this video exists for us, newbies would be much appreciated 😊🎉😅!

Ah, thanks! I was really worried about accidentally pulling off the roots.
There's no problem if a root part goes away. Big roots can be trimmed for easier planting in substrate.

A little coconut oil on your fingers..glue won't stick(olive oil,too) u only need a tiny bit
Too late lol
Where were you last night my girl I'm one set of acrylics down and still picking huge bits off my hands 🤣🤣

Super glue works really well for small plants. I use this method too sometimes
Tonight I superglued subwassertang to small pebbles. Then anubius to a piece of coral. Such fun
For plants like anubias, i just use small cable tie, tie the rhizome to a piece of wood or lava rock. Then bury the rock or wood in the substrate.

I was told the plant and rock needs to be wet when gluing. But it takes ages to set, plus i get the gel running down the rock leaving a white stripe!

Gorilla glue, in the gel form.

scotch brand works. just in case anyone was wondering.
lock tight super glue gel works well too

How soon do you put the plants back in the tank after it is glued with the fish ? Is it okay to put in when it dries?
huh? Am I missing something
Following. I need answer for that too
@@Jndlove I leave it for 5 minutes, it's best to let it dry

Indeed.
How long did u let the plant sit with the glue on it before putting it inside the water?
For plants that are glued like this can root tabs still be beneficial if they're near by or they'd strictly feed off of liquid fertilizer?
They feed more of the water column, so liquid fert would be best.
When planting, does the rhizome or does the roots touch the glue?
+William Zhang I attached the rhizome. I cut most of the roots off to plant.
ty so much for help
