A vessel nearing a bend or an area of a channel or fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction must sound one prolonged blast. This signal must be answered with a prolonged blast by any approaching vessel that may be within hearing around the bend or behind the intervening obstruction.
This is a good (and not only legal technically required) time to test the horn.
By the way a "prolonged blast" is defined as 5 seconds.

We were boarded outside of Coinjock, all good but a bit stressful, Ron giving the Fonzie thumbs up, nice.
As a criminal defense attorney I always laughed when people say “If you are innocent, you have nothing to worry about”. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that anytime you interact with law enforcement you are stressed - even if there is no need to be. I think there’s that did I forget something factor.

Guy in slip next to me in fernandina says they wanted to make sure the toilet is piped right where you don't have a valve to discharge it into ocean, older boats didn't have holding tanks and sometimes when tanks were added it gave an option to discharge the crap once you were out to sea,
I have two tanks and they are plumbed differently. My forward head goes to a 60gal tank that is plumbed to a Raritan Purasan treatment system and then overboard. Or I can pump out which you have to do in places like the Keys.
My aft head goes to a 90 gal tank that can only be pumped out. I think this is the future of boating which is why I plumbed it that way but it does present problems in the Bahamas where there are few pump outs. When we are there, we almost exclusively use the forward head.
@CruisingThisOldBoat mine is exact same way, I just thought they never updated the forward cabin head plumbing wow......forward head belongs to George, our cat, his litterbox is in there hahaha

@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 - yes, as long as it is installed properly it will treat the sewage far better than municipal treatment plants do and allow you to keep your tank empty, except when in No Discharge zones.
Where ever you go the Government is there to let you know they are watching.

Just wait till you go to a foreign country if you want stressful boarding by the coast guard. I got boarded three times in ten years when cruising Mexico, but each time they were only interested in drugs, and didn't look the boat over very well. Do you guys have a video about decks? It looks like you painted your teak, is that correct? How did you seal them? What is your anchor gear like, how much chain and what size? I see so many power boats with pathetic anchor gear that I wonder if they ever anchor out.
You are correct about foreign countries. As much as we sometimes complain about the USA, we give much more protections to people than most countries out there. I have traveled around the world and many of their rules make no sense to an American.
We don’t have a How to Video on painting decks although it shows me painting them in episode 193. There is a how to video on making the rounded corners: episode 198. We did not paint over teak decks as the teak had been removed prior to our purchase of Elixir, so I was painting bare fiberglass. We did still have teak on the fly bridge but I have glassed over that although I have not yet painted it.
Our anchor is a Rocna 20, which is 44lbs. It has held us well through many storms although I would prefer a larger anchor. I went with that size because at the time we did not have a power winch and Marie was pulling the anchor in by hand. Now that we have a power winch, I do want to get a larger anchor when we can afford it. We also have 200ft of 5/16” chain followed by 150ft of 5/8” rope. We anchor out 95% of the time and have no problems, although I think I tend to put out more rode than most. I discovered in a storm in the keys once that lots of rode works about as well as an anchor.

Not a fan of "safety checks". Seems invasive especially for you guys with larger boats that are basically considered your residence when moored.
I agree that it could be (and probably sometimes is) used as an excuse just to check someone out. Unfortunately, current law allows it. As often happens the law casts a wide net and so there is no distinction between a 12ft skiff and a 60 foot yacht that is someone’s home.
Imagine if the government could just go house to house doing "safety checks" to ensure everyone is doing "what they are supposed to be doing."

As a retired Coastie who’s done countless inspections, they are not an excuse to check someone out. They are solely intended to ensure that you have all your required (mandated) safety gear. That way God forbid something happened you have a chance of survival. I can’t tell you how many boats I’ve been on that one, didn’t have their gear that could save their life! It’s all about education too
@@joshkaiser8583 - since the day we first purchased Elixir we have never personally met a coastguardsman that wasn’t extremely professional. I have never suspected that a patrol stopped me for any reason other than a routine safety check. Although it can be hard to believe how some people boat, I have heard the stories of the conditions of some of the boats and people you guys have come upon. So as a boater, I am glad you guys are out there. As a lawyer, I just find it interesting that boats don’t have the same protections that cars have. But I’ve never been curious enough to go research why. I just accept that it is part of keeping us and the waters safe. Now, as a deep water sailor …😉

Interestingly enough, they can’t even pull you over in your car for a safety check. I’m not sure why they carved out such an exception for boats.
@CruisingThisOldBoat also coast guard enforces federal law, not states laws, so if something is legal in the state your in but it's illegal federally, like marijuana laws or gun laws differ from state to state..maritime and federal over rides states laws....coast guard doesn't recognize sanctuary cities either if yur an illegal trying to get here by boat ha ha
